Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
mentioning @Mercy King
The piste looked a bit bigger without a moderator’s viewpoint keeping him safe from harm, and a lot scarier without his fellow Vipers in direct view. Never one to shoot blindly in the dark, Cassius steeled himself to focus near-entirely on his surroundings. When a spell did come for him, however, no preparation could have helped him avoid the brilliant flash of green streaking through the fog. Evidently, even a vigilant duellist couldn’t compete with one who’d mostly memorised everyone’s place on the piste.
It struck him squarely in the chest, but, bizarrely, for all of the surprise, he felt no pain. For the briefest moment, it was as if nothing had happened except for a slight muffling of sound… a strange but acceptable effect in which Cassius would have been rather content if not for its near-immediate side-effects making themselves known in the next few seconds. Something salty, first, before his nose began to run over with thin, watery mucus—he reached for one of the many handkerchiefs he kept on him to staunch his runny nose, but a brief bout of nausea forced him to lean forward and brace himself against the sudden head cold.
Curse of the Bogies. Cassius had only ever read of it while transcribing descriptions and practising incantations, but he’d hoped to avoid it for longer than the start of his first duel ever. Even reading its description sounded unpleasant, and he could now say first-hand that it was just as bad as he’d feared.
Cassius had always been a little bit of a sensitive child, prone to little colds and sniffles in a way most people became when perpetually surrounded by other little kids and all-weather lacrosse matches. Even so, he’d never really been one to feel too incapacitated by sickness, at least, not in the dramatic way that Mercy always indulged in. There had been no warning, and he had neither blankets to huddle under nor his best friend to cling to, only the knowledge that his current predicament had been magically induced.
It’d be temporary, and wasn’t actually that distracting for now, but it was gross. He felt gross, and maybe it was naivety, but he’d thought it’d be like his upperclassmen’s duels, whose collateral damage usually restricted itself to the piste and people’s clothes. It wasn’t usually the slow, terrible walk back to the defensive line, unable to see their own attackers.
But then again, duelling wasn’t supposed to be fair. It was a test of their skill, and they’d been taken off guard—Cassius couldn’t let it keep happening. He was a captain, even if this was his first bout, and he needed to get through things for the team’s sake, if not for his own teammates’ sake. He could be good, even if he didn’t feel that way.
He’d just need to start with the napkin pressed semi-permanently to his nose now. All the rest could get back on track soon. Mind made up, Cassius swallowed back a wave of frustrated tears—so devastatingly involuntary in the context of things—and readied himself as the thick fog began to dissipate slowly but surely. Minor setbacks were minor for a reason, and they still had much of the duel left to make up for it.

Well she had gotten her wish for another round of flashy spells. The teams were both going for an offensive approach this time around. The smoke around the area was also clearing so she was able to see the fight clearer as well. And it didn't dissappoint.
Seemingly after casting a successful Boogies curse, Edward was just... standing there doing nothing-. Not even an attempt at another spell. Was the guy phasing out? No wait that was what could happen to his opponent not him. She hit her cheeks slightly to refocuse on what was happening.
Verity seemed to have a liking for the fire spell especially after being hit by it earlier. This was now to second time she casted it at the Viper this time aiming for Cassius. Her aim was impeccable, hiting him right on with the spell. Unfortunatly for her he didn't catch aflame which Fawkes personally thought was a good thing. Having both uncontrollable mucus and then being lit alight sounded like a nightmare.
Tatiana had tried to slow down the other part veela but Esme seemed to be expecting it and quickly dodged right out of the way. Fawkes wondered how the spells didn't hit the audience but she'd probably find that out in due time.
Livia casted incendio at Tatiana. What was with these first years having an obssession with the fire making spell? I mean she couldn't blame them it was fun to cast but still. Anyways Tatiana was able to dodge the spell easily.
Cassius even through the boogies curse aimed to stop Tatiana from casting spells in the first place. However the spell redirected towards Edward. The hufflepuff had seemingly snapped out of his little phase out by now since he was able to dodge the spell easily. She watched eagerly as the match was getting more and more interesting.

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8

Perhaps most unfortunately, Fortuna’s favour had flippantly failed to find Slytherin. As the fog faded, Livia had surmised that the situation regarding precision might improve; from the success (or lack thereof) of her team, though, that did not appear to be the case. Her own fire-making spell came short of slamming into her target, and it did not appear as if Cassius levied much luck, either.
Fortune was said to favour the bold, but that was not to say that it did not play favourites.
At the very least, it appeared that Tatiana’s attack against Esme had, too, been in vain. Livia’s friend had been spared further embarrassment. Nonetheless, though, their opponents were clearly an elephantine threat, about which something simply had to be done.

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
Edward slapped himself… undone by his own success: he was still celebrating in his own mind the previous success against Cassius with the curse of the bogies that he got caught in a daydream and missed his opportunity to cast another spell or do anything that round… he bit his tongue, not too hard but hard enough to leave the taste of a reminder on his lips… that was a mistake he wasn’t soon wanting to repeat, he mustn’t, both for his own sake but more importantly he couldn’t let his teammates down: and so with that he steeled his resolve and began to cast again…

They had to keep pushing while the fog was up, despite the obstacle it posed to their own attacks. Edward was successful previously. If he could do it then, then they could do it again, no?
Only Edward hadn't followed through on continuing to attack Cassius. After Vera's spell landed, she turned to him. "Don't get cold feet now, Edward," Vera said, though more lighthearted than reprimanding.
On the other side, Tatiana hadn't seen much success in targeting Esme again. Vera turned to her as well. "Nice try. Don't get too caught up in it." It wasn't the end yet, after all. There were still a few more rounds of spells to go.

| E | ✧ ![]() banner by prat. ![]() Esme was quickly learning that instead of a single, resounding victory, she would have to settle for the small ones. At least she had suffered no further indignity at the hands of Tatiana — another graceful dodge, a comfortable distance between the edge of her robes and the Slowing Charm thrown her way. At least the lanky boy from Hufflepuff had seemingly… ah… forgotten to do anything. At least Verity’s voice was nice enough: despite the constant chatter, it wasn’t too grating to listen to. Esme could certainly think of worse. Ill fortune makes for a strange kind of optimism, it seemed. At least she was no longer on fire, no longer forced to watch her friend enveloped by smoke… this was fine, Esme decided, tilting her chin up with pride that only felt mildly unearned. There was little point too meandering over whatever mistakes they had committed prior. There would only remain the piste, the stance she adjusted into, the grip she had on her wand. Hopefully, a few larger victories would appear on the way, too. ![]() action. as strategized. ✧✦✧ |

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
mentioning @--
Perhaps the Vipers had been thrown off by the fog—yes, that could be an explanation for their small losses, frequent as they became to be. Cassius could serve as both a first-hand witness and a participant, given the sheer amount of training they managed to fit in, so it was not as if they were caught terribly off-guard by their unfortunate circumstances. Instead, it was becoming increasingly clear that the Slytherin captaincy’s generally hands-off approach of letting each team work out its own synergy failed to trickle coherence down the ranks. From what he’d heard about his predecessor, it had worked for her, but Cassius had never been so good at being cold or unfriendly. There was a real sense of anticipation involved in each cast, an instinct that couldn’t be replicated casually, and yet Hufflepuff had figured out at least something right.
That ‘something’ could not even wait for them to get their bearings after the fog spell lifted and their visibility returned to normal. Cassius lifted his wand for a safe Tongue-tying spell, both hands currently occupied, yet it seemed that even deliberate aim had somehow left him, for he’d aimed for one Hufflepuff and had somehow targeted another without meaning to. He would have loved to consider it a deliberate redirection—a feint, perhaps, clever as it seemed—, but the exact truth was that he’d been just as surprised at his own spellwork as the burst of fire licking up his wand arm.
Feeling quite unfortunately like a bird recognising the safety of its own cage, he shook the blow off until it’d burned away, at least grateful for the way it failed to linger. From across the piste, as strange as it seemed, Verity’s light-hearted encouragement plucked at his resolve. Her words were not for him—exactly against, really— and his teammates’ stiff upper lips dissuaded similar sentiments from being said aloud, but it was the spirit of things that transcended houses. He couldn’t dwell on things after it’d happened. Together as a team, never alone in loss or success, they could work hard with what they had, for as long as they had it.

By Merlin's beard. Fawkes' eyes widdened and she leaned forward. Things were really getting interesting now. For one, Livia had casted the Metelojix. Except the spell hadn't gone as planned at there were now clouds hovering above the Slytherin team instead of Hufflepuff.
Cassius was trying his hand again at casting the tongue tying spell. This time his target was Verity. However probably thanks to the mucus, he missed his spell. Or maybe its cause Verity was a good evader. Regardless the spell didn't hit its mark.
Esme, after dodging for a bit decided now to cast Incendio at Tatiana since the other part veela seemed to not be paying attention. Though maybe Esme was the one who wasn't paying much attention seeing as the spell backfired and hit her instead, making her catch aflame. Fawkes winced at that. It was going to hurt like crazy.
The badgers were certainly taking advantage of the vipers misfortune. Edward threw a Flipendo spell Livia's way and it hit square on. By the way Livia was hit, Fawkes thought she was about to faint but the girl was definitly stronger than she gave her credit for, since she was able to easily evade an incendio sent her way by Verity.
Tatiana really wasn't paying attention. First Edward now Tatiana? What was happening this duel- It was so chaotic. But Fawkes lived for chaos like this. Her last name was quite literally Chaos. She was now grinning like a cheshire cat clearly enjoying this match. Mentally she made a note to ask about basic fire safety training from someone since people here liked fire so much.

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8

Once a single domino in a line tipped over, the rest would come clattering down. Such was the effect upon the spells that were flung.
The dreadful results they had been dealt so far only heightened the lump in Livia’s throat as she uttered another attempt at Metelojinx. It was in vain. But something shifted – the wrongness of it sent goosebumps up her arms, and, in horror, she realised that the dark clouds were surrounding Slytherin and lifting upwards. Had she been a more indignantly rakish adolescent, a series of explosive expletives would have escaped her. As it was, she suppressed a bitter, Well, I never, and blankly stared forward – or, she attempted to.
A similar backfiring from Esme caught her attention, and Livia turned her head, a brief flash of concern gleaming in her gaze as her friend’s clothes ignited, as if things could not have worsened.
Pericles had once suggested that every witch or wizard had a one in twenty chance, or so it often felt, of critically succeeding or failing at any moment in life. Livia would have to find him after this duel and posit a challenge to his theory. He might –
WHAM.
The spell that slammed into Livia knocked the wind out of her. Stumbling backwards, she stared (or rather, glared) at the opposing team, unable (or rather, unwilling) to discern who had cast the offending spell. Such disdain did mean she had far more surety in her evasion of Verity’s incendio. It did not, however, mean she would so easily shake off the knockback jinx’s effects. It was as if her brittle bones had rattled against one another, and she grit her teeth in an attempt to distract herself from the discomfort.

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
Missing a spell was always going to be annoying, but she had to acknowledge that her opponents would be just as desperate as she was for a win. They were still doing some damage, thanks to Edward's spell having landed, so they still had something going for them.
"Slowly, slowly," Vera reminded herself. Then, she looked at her teammates and gave them a smile. "Keep it up."
She couldn't help the grin on her face seeing the dark rain cloud over Slytherin's head rather than their own. In her experience, those clouds hardly struck, but when they did, they were brutal.
