HA!
I just died in your arms tonight.
it must've been something you said...

In his mind, Caradoc was blasting the song through his head. Kicking and beating in all directions the rhythm required him to hit. He was on his evening work out session. While people often reflected on Caradoc and mentioned either his singing or his past medical career, they never really took note of his own bulkiness. Perhaps mostly due to him not actually having the temperament that stereotipically is alligned with the muscular body type.

With the weather reaching a turning point in this time of the year, Caradoc hadn't really thought of bringing a warmer jacket or hoodie. After all, the wind had a habit of howling through the dales of Scotland. It seemed today he was rather lucky in that regard and he mentally noted that next day, he'd have to remember to bring something.

He tugged gently on his tank top in order to get the sweat to dry a little. A small towel drying most of his face as he walked up the hillside. By this hour most students would be returning inside their dorms except for maybe the odd stragglers who liked watching the sunsets across the lake. Hogwarts sure was a romantic place for those that knew to open their eyes.

The Head of House took a moment for himself as well as he rested a bit near the top. His breath heavy, but regulated. Placing his hands in his hips, he stood there smiling. There had never been a sight quite like this, he admitted to himself. It drew him back to the days he still ran like a wild boy around these grounds. From his chaotic first two years to his foolish later ones. It had been a good time and for those that would have known him, they would have noticed how significantly older he looked in this evening light. Though the fatigue of the earlier workout might have been the cause as well. But Caradoc himself knew he wasn't getting any younger any time soon.

A loud sigh escaped his breath, not in frustration, but in acceptance.

" … Therefore to horse,
And let us not be dainty of leave-taking,
But shift away: there's warrant in that theft
Which steals itself when there's no mercy left."

Closing the book, Zahid looked up to check on his surroundings. It was getting dark and, while he could use magic to produce light to keep on reading, the end of a scene seemed to be a good point to pause to him. Macbeth was not particularly amongst his favourite books, but it was one of the classics and in his opinion one should always take the time to read the classics – and ideally at least twice at different times in one's life.

Whenever he had a spot of free time, Zahid either spend it in the library or getting some fresh air outside. He loved the castle, and while the air inside was perhaps better than it would have been in a non-magical boarding school, nothing trumped the fresh air outside in nature – even if it was merely the air of the school grounds and not the wilderness.

From his spot underneath a tree he could see a couple of students return to the castle in the distance, indicating the approach of the curfew. Letting out a soft whistle, as he did not see Dot anywhere near him, he put the little book away in one of his jacket's many pockets. Getting up, he took a look around, both for his cat and to see if there were any stragglers still roaming the grounds that needed to be reminded that the curfew would be soon. Although, judging by the sun, the curfew might still be further away than he had first thought.

Leaning back against the tree to wait for his cat, he noticed the Hufflepuff Head of House seemingly taking a break from his jog nearby. He had not interacted much with his colleague – the longest interaction they had had had doubtlessly been at the barbecue during the summer. So he would wait for his cat to return before making his way over to greet Professor Browne. Maybe they could walk back to the castle together.

From the corner of his eye, Caradoc noticed the faint movement of turning pages. A man reading his book against a tree. To recognise this man was no exceptional feat, Professor Zahid was as most, a unique character in his own right. There had been little to no interaction between the two of them so far, at least not regarding anything unrelated to their professional careers. A shame really, as Caradoc was assigned as his Head. The older man from a far away country with most likely numerous tales to tell was left under his wing. Perhaps now was better than ever to make up for lost time.

Not at all dressed for conversation, as being sweaty was generally not appreciated in close encounters, Caradoc was grateful for meeting him out in the open air. Keeping his distance by a few feet the Hufflepuff Head of House smiled friendly at his colleague as he approached.

"Professor Zahid" He recalled how Masoud had been the man's father, not necessarily his last name. Caradoc silently admitted he was no expert on foreign naming conventions. Benghazi was easier to figure out. "May I interrupt your evening reading?" If anything came natural to Mr. Browne, it would have been smiling. His parents' influence no doubt. Even now, this late in life, they had never changed their opinion on kindness. Though it was rather funny to them how both their sons had seemingly fallen on two different sides on the aspect of joy.

“Professor Browne, good evening!” Zahid straightened as he greeted the Head of House with a smile. “Oh, you are not interrupting anything, I was at good place to pause – and even if I was not, I would not consider it an interruption.” Not when he was outside on the castle grounds, where everyone could approach him if they so wished. Now, if someone had interrupted him while reading in the library... that might be a whole different ball game.

Casting a quick look around to see if he could spot Dot yet, he turned back to the Head of House. “How are you on this fine evening?” It was possibly one of the last warm evenings – he would have to see how Dot liked (or rather disliked) the cold, mayhap a change in his schedule would be needed. There was always the possibility to take a walk earlier and finish his work in the evenings afterward? But he would cross that bridge once he came upon it, no need to contemplate it beforehand.

Hearing a soft meow from behind the tree, he squatted down to pick Herodotus back up – the kitten was slowly getting a bit bigger and he supposed Dot would not fit in his jacket much longer – but the kitten was beginning to also favour climbing on his shoulder or draping himself around his neck instead.

Plopping down next to the History of Magic professor, Caradoc sighed as he got comfortable in the grass. Tired from today's homework, he really shouldn't lay down here. But an opportunity to get to know the newest member of the Hufflepuff team better was something he couldn't just pass up. Seeing Zahid sit here with his book and euh... cat, made Doc wonder if this was how the professor usually spent his days/ The gentleman was older than he was that much was sure. "See you brought a wee friend there." Doc grinned. "Did you bring him from home? Wherever home is I guess."

He had next to nothing on the man next to him. All he knew was that he at least seemed friendly. Which was always nice to see in the badger den. Letting his arms rest on his knees, the Head of House looked across the horizon. Hogwarts had always been beautiful. He remembered how he used to escape towards the edges of the forest with a girl his age. Good times to remember, though they were all ages ago. "Have you been able to settle in nicely professor?" Doc eventually asked the man. Initial conversations were always awkward. Sometimes they were emenat to be, he thought. A perfect reason to get to know each other, to find something to talk about.

Sitting back down with Dot in his lap enjoying the scritches he lavished him with, Zahid turned toward the Head of House. “Oh, no, I actually acquired Herodotus a short while after I began at Hogwarts, the last weekend before school ended for summer if I recall. Home had been wherever I travelled the last few years – sadly not the best time for a pet.” He supposed even if he was no longer to read, a conversation with one of his colleagues was a good reason to enjoy the evening air a tad longer – and the Head of the House whose team he had been assigned to no less. “Do you have any pets?”

It seemed the settling in question was standard faire in first (or second) conversations. He supposed he had settled in better by now than the last time he had been asked this question. Still, he gave a vague shrug with a “I suppose so. It had been a bit difficult in the beginning, but no more than expected. The school is quite welcoming if a bit of a fire hazard from what I heard. At the very least I cannot complain about the few colleagues I have met.” Which, if he was perfectly honest, probably only included the Slytherin and Hufflepuff Heads of Houses (one of which he was only getting to know right now) as he had not really talked to any of the professors outside the obligatory staff meeting during the summer.

"Ahh a traveller." Caradoc winked at the older man. "I remember the days me and the boys from the band had wild plans to travel around the world. Not that such an idea ever came close to being reality." He grinned as he recalled the smiling faces of his old mates. "I couldn't do it. Had to become a healer, someone else might have gotten it wrong you see. I felt this was my thing." It was hard to explain to others how Caradoc had found his calling. Something along with the experiences he had gathered during his time at Hogwarts.

"Aw look at that! You're making friends already Z!" He grinned giving the other a gentle nudge on the shoulder, telling him he was doing fine. "Yes, I have miss Hastings to stand me by. A beautiful Indian Eagle. Owl of course. She's been with me ever since I arrived at this castle. She is getting old though." His eyes grew sad with the thought of her age only pushing further and further towards that afterthought.

His hair would blow a little in the wind as they sat there quietly. Doc did not bring his own book. Why would he have? His intetn had been to get in some excercise. Particularly during the evening he felt he had the most time to do a little run or lift some weights.

“Oh? You were in a band? What instrument did you play? Or did you sing?” He was not quite sure how a band fit into his impression he had of Caradoc so far but he took note of it as he did of Caradoc's having been a Healer. “That is quite a switch in professions, then.” To be honest, he was not certain whether he meant from being in a band to Healer or from Healer to Head of House.

Making friends already... Well, he supposed Caradoc would make it friends, plural, now. Possibly. He was still quite bad at telling it, even at his age. There was a reason he mostly preferred books to people. Or maybe said preference was why he never could quite tell. Oh, well. It was what it was. “I suppose.”

A pet growing old was a sad thing. A good thing that they have stayed by their side for so long but sad as that time undeniable grew to an end. He had Dot barely for a few months and he really did not want to imagine. “You must have some stories to tell, then, about mischief your Miss Hastings got into.” He offered Caradoc a smile. Truly, he simply did not really know how to keep the conversation going or from growing awkward.

Doc nodded in silence, his smile slowly fading. "Drums." He replied shortly. It wasn't hard for him to remember those glory days. Though he had been a very different man back then. All wild and free, caring less for what the world thought of him. The wind would blow through his long hair as he bopped his head to the music, slamming down hard on the drums. "Life was a bit more... flashy, back then." He'd grin. The boy from that time spend time in the company of his fellow musicians as well as a series of lovers. Most of the connections he made were fleeting, and as he looked back he could only cringe to see the likeness to his brother.

There had always been one difference between them according to Doc, and it was the simple fact that he had a plan. He had set his mind on being a healer rather quickly in attending Hogwarts. The events he witnessed most likely more than encouraging him to take up that mantle. Caduceus on the other hand, had no plan whatsoever. The man just lived and was happy to live. Nothing more, nothing less. "Mischief? My Z, what do you think of me and my faithful companion?" The man would reply with a smirk.

"I'm afraid she and I are a little on the tame side. Though I won't deny she's an odd little bird." He chuckled as he recalled picking her up at the old menagerie on diagon alley. "She prefers to walk rather than fly. Can you imagine that? She tiptoes all over the place and gives me shite for keeping the place a mess. She's lucky she's that small or I'd have ruffled her feathers more than once!" His smile wouldn't waver as he spoke of her. She had been an odd companion for over 25 years now. "What about your little Greek historian? Is he showing signs of mischief?" Cats always do. He thought to himself.

[quote]Drums. Well, it both fit and didn’t fit with the first impression he’d gotten of Caradoc Browne. But then, first impressions were just that: a first impression. Purely judging a book by its cover was doing a disservice to the book, after all. (Not that some covers did not quite strongly reflect their books… Well, no need to further confuse the metaphor.)

Raising a brow at Caradoc’s first reaction, Zahid shook his head. He did not believe for a second that Caradoc and more importantly his owl had never gotten into any mischief – He didn’t think there were that many people that never got dragged into any mischief at all and pets… Hm. Pets had their own little heads. Herodotus certainly did, at times.

A walking owl… well, he’d seen cats that played fetch and rabbits that believed they could fly… so why not an owl that preferred not to. “So, your mess is getting in her way?” he teased in an attempt at humour. Hopefully Caradoc would not take it the wrong way. Absently patting Dot, he pondered on the kitten’s attempted mischief. “Well, he is still young and I have only had him for a few months, but… Let’s just say, it is not a good idea to leave any drawers open. Or too many papers laying around where he can climb. He’s a curious lad. Not that mischievous – yet, at least – but he doesn’t quite help with keeping things in order.”

Zahid gave his little wayward friend an adoring look. It was true that Dot sometimes got into things he shouldn’t … but the kitten was in no way malicious or purposefully destroying anything, so he had a hard time being mad at the little one. Even if his second favourite place to curl up was apparently inside a drawer lately. Shivering slightly at cold breeze, he scratched behind the kitten’s ear.
