Katrina stood defiantly now, the anger somehow staying within her. She knew all kinds of horrible things she could do, curse of the bogies, slug vomiting charm, and a host of other equally unpleasant things. But instead of lashing out, her head was level, albeit mad.

The boy obviously looked her over, scanning for any glimpse of what was going on. For all he knew, the girl could have attacked the lioness and she had been only protecting herself. But, he still framed her as guilty. A smirk was his resulting emotion and Katrina wondered what her face was saying. He seemed to be astute at reading body language as she was. Katrina looked at her reflection in one of the grimy mirrors and squinted at it before turning again to the window.

It seemed the window was the only thing that held her together. When she turned back, he had a wand in hand. It was all she could do not to flinch. He probably didn’t know too many bad spells, but it was still threatening. Even though Katrina’s wand was in her pocket, she still appeared to be threatening, at least that was on her side. “ Someone with a conscience would pick on another student their own size, yet you pick on a first-year Ravenclaw. How telling, Walker” he sneered, obviously proud of himself.

Katrina kept her face emotionless, the anger still just below the surface. “Sure, but a first year Slytherin is the one protecting... and you still don’t know what even happened,“ She eluded to the Ravenclaw being the guilty one, hopefully confusing or at least puzzling him.

He returned to the panic-attacked girl and Katrina turned back to the window. Stop feeling guilty. She suppressed all emotions besides the frustration. She should have the right to be angry for once in her life.

Katrina crossed her arms and glared outside. It was a bit odd realizing that both of their first impressions of her would be bad. The only person that Katrina had really been annoyed with was a boy, whom she had dubbed Hackasplat, in the caretakers office a while back. But these two had just stepped in on her. Was there really anywhere in the school with privacy.

He coxed her to breathe and Katrina sighed, as little as she wanted to admit it, she had been in many panic attack situations. It was something that had only started at the Masked Ball back in September. But now, with the Blossom Ball coming up in two days, Katrina thought it likely that she would be suffered greatly through a few more.

Elspeth nodded as the boy coached her to breathe. She continued taking long inhalations through her nose, and blowing big bursts from her mouth. After a few breaths she could feel a tingling sensation in her arms as she regained some feeling in them. The light through the window didn't seem to be as bright as staring directly into the sun. Her feet scuffed the floor as she scooted them slightly, the ground solid beneath her. She was slowly regaining everything. The older girl hadn't cast a spell on her. Elspeth saw as she spoke and turned away toward the window. No one could cast a spell while doing that. The boy was right, it had just been something inside of her.

So, Elspeth pushed herself all of the way up. Her steps were a little wobbly as she was regaining feeling in her feet. Shuffling slowly she began to move toward the door in a deliberate manner. Some water had pooled on the tiles underneath one of the sink and begun to run dribbles through the cracks in the grout. The soft stone scrape of her shoes silence as they got wet.

Once she made it to the door she put one hand on the large door knob, and the other on the center of the door, to help steady herself. Before she could open it, though, she felt like she had to try and reach out one last time. As mad as this girl was, Elspeth and the Slytherin boy had barged in on her being upset about losing her family. And that had to be more terrifying than what Elspeth was going through.

She turned her head over her right shoulder, looking back at the Gryffindor, "You don't have to talk if you don't want to. But if I lost my family, I'd be pretty upset too. I'm sorry that happened to you." Her gaze never met the girl's, she opted to look down at the water, tracing its path with her eyes. Speaking up at all was already a huge feat for her. She wasn't ready to do that while looking directly at the girl. Her hand held firmly to the knob, ready to turn and run out if it looked like the girl was going to react with a spell. But Elspeth hoped that maybe she wouldn't.

Wyatt waited until the Ravenclaw was alright again to turn back to the snotty Gryffindor. “Sure, but a first year Slytherin is the one protecting... and you still don’t know what even happened,” She said. “And I don’t think you’ll tell me.” Wyatt replied once the Ravenclaw could stand on her own. The Walker girl was being too ominous. He was definitely confused but his face didn’t show it, and neither did his eyes. He’d trained them- yes, his eyes- to be black and cold so that no one could read them, a skill the Gryffindor obviously hadn’t learned. He wiped his nose as it started bleeding again.

“I’m pretty sure you don’t know what ‘Get out’ means, do you?”

On her way out, the Eagle turned to face the Lion. Before Wyatt could shoot back his own snarky reply, she said “You don't have to talk if you don't want to. But if I lost my family, I'd be pretty upset too. I'm sorry that happened to you.”

Wyatt’s mask fell for a moment- just a moment- as he let his face be sad for the girl. He lost his father, though to Wyatt, he never really had a father anyway. He was an alcoholic and a mean one at that. The day he left, he called his wife and son freaks, and Wyatt in return gave him a concussion, and he scurried off- in terror. The memory never failed to make Wyatt laugh, but this time, it failed. He felt bad for a Gryffindor, something he thought could never happen. He couldn’t imagine having a real family, let alone losing one.

Wyatt felt a wave of sadness rush over him. Damn his emotions. He could control them so well, but under the façade he was a really emotional kid. That was all he was, a kid, though he didn’t like it very much. He managed to keep the mask on, but let his eyes get glossy, hoping it would be enough to at least show the Walker girl that she wasn’t alone.

He turned slightly, showing that if the Ravenclaw opened the door and left, he'd leave too.

Katrina had so suppress the thankfulness as the panic attacked Ravenclaw began to move again. The girl made it to the door and paused. The boy right behind her. Thankfully they both seemed done, finally going to leave the second year alone.

You don't have to talk if you don't want to. But if I lost my family, I'd be pretty upset too. I'm sorry that happened to you.“ Katrina bit back a, ‘I don’t need your pity’. But she had already had a panic attack because of her actions, and Katrina really didn’t want the girl to hate her.

Katrina turned her head with a blank expression. The last of her rage had piddled away, now she felt empty and worn out. However, her face was unreadable.

The boy turned at almost the same moment, and Katrina saw the emotions flicker over his face. They had both put together her sad story. But the thing that surprised the lioness the most was the expression of knowing. He had actually experienced something like her, he could relate.

Katrina began in a quiet voice, raw and no longer hiding the pain, “Thirteen months ago. House fire. I lost my parents and my brother” on the last word, Katrina’s voice broke from the struggle of not crying. Again she turned to the window to hide her face. “At the funeral, my family told me they didn’t want me. I would be stuck here until I was old enough to live in my own.” Katrina didn’t want to say any of this, but the words were pouring out before she could stop them.

She paused hand reaching for her left sleeve. Inside was a small embroidered dragon, a symbol that meant so much to her. Her fingers brushed over the familiar work, calming her down and suppressing the tears.

I guess I shouldn’t be still upset about it. But all I ever do is worry about other people. I didn’t even know how much of a wreak I have become,” The words escaping her lips were the most truth she had ever admitted in one sentence. Emotion laced each word with a year of hurt.

Katrina shoved the emotions aside, even the rage. She was left an empty shell, the girl in her trapped again. She wanted to apologize, but she knew that if she opened her mouth, she would cry. She didn’t want to be that pathetic in front of the younger students. So she bottled it up.

Katrina took her hand from the pocket that stored her wand and crossed her arms. She stood staring out at the window, not in rage, but in unreadable emotions. This time it wasn’t teenage angst, but hurt that the window kept under control. She sighed the weight of what she had just done weighing heavily on her shoulders.

The storm within her had faded to a spring shower, still there, but not dangerous anymore.

Elspeth's hand slipped from the door knob. She didn't move away, it was still clear that Walker didn't want anyone to get closer to her and Elspeth didn't want to violate what small amount of goodwill it seemed like she'd earned in offering a sincere condolence. The older student didn't seem so rabid or out of control anymore. It was like she shrank from this larger than life presence down down down until, to Elspeth, she finally appeared as she was - just another kid around her age who was in over her head.

She couldn't begin to pretend like she knew what Walker was going through. Her mind could barely wrap around the reality that the girl had discussed -it was just so beyond her ability to comprehend at such a young age. For a moment she just stood there, frozen and unsure of what to do. In her gut she knew that the right thing to do was to stay with this person who was clearly suffering in some way to offer any help that she could. But the rest of her couldn't think of anything that she could offer of help. Elspeth had lived a mostly normal, boring life, happily with both of her parents very much alive. Although she'd been picked on at times, she'd never experienced deep tragedy or the kind of trauma that could help her empathize with Katrina. There were no platitudes saved up in her mind that seemed at all appropriate for this kind of setting.

So she stood there, her mouth hanging open ever so slightly, and wishing the words would come. There was also the matter of how exhausted her whole body felt at that moment. She'd give anything to just be laying down in her bed right now, away from the prying eyes of anyone else. Though most of the haze had lifted, there was still a lingering emptiness left over under her skin that told her she was spent.

"I think it makes sense," she was a bit startled at her own addition, which had come out as barely above a whisper, her throat still dry from the deep breathing, "that you'd still be upset about it. That's a really big thing worth being upset about. One time, a boy threw a stink bomb at me and I was upset about it for a week. This has to be worth at least a sackful of stink bombs, if not more."

A brief pause, and some thought later she added, "Not that I'm trying to - I'm just trying to say that you're being really hard on yourself." The last words came out with effort, like she had to wade through the molasses of her own internal monologue to figure out what way she was trying to say anything. Everything was light, and dizzy, and a jumble. She just wanted to know what the one right thing to say was. There had to always be the one right thing to say to fix a situation.

"This has to be worth at least a sackful of stink bombs, if not more." Wyatt almost burst into uncharacteristic laughter at that. A sackful of stink bombs = family abandoning you? He held it back though, the girl just had a panic attack and he didn’t want to be the cause of another one. He accidentally let out a small "wow," but shut his mouth immediately after.

Some thought later, she added, "Not that I'm trying to - I'm just trying to say that you're being really hard on yourself." Wyatt somewhat agreed with her, but he still gets sad over his father abandoning him a year ago, and he was a scumbag. It wasn’t the girl’s fault, but what she needed was time. Time heals everything or something like that. Wyatt wanted to empathize out loud, but he couldn’t. He wouldn’t know how to say it, and he certainly wasn’t looking for pity. Fearing he’d find it, he kept his experiences inside.

“I’m not trying to confuse you or anything… but I disagree. I think you just need some more time. The things you’re feeling right now are perfectly okay. There are still people who care about you and will make sure you’re safe. That’s what Gryffindor and Solomon Lear exist for.” He bit back a duh sounding tone on the last sentence, but rolled his eyes at "Gryffindor." “You’re not a wreck you’re mourning. Mourning the loss of your family and the loss of those gits who’ll be sorry they left you in ten years’ time.” Spoken like a true Slytherin, he thought. “I’m sorry about your family. Really, I am,” he said, quietly, keeping his face perfectly unreadable. He cursed himself for being so helpful. He really hoped neither of them would talk about this side of Wyatt Starkey.

Katrina stood at the window, arms crossed, the entire time they talked. She bit her lip, not wanting their pity, but knowing that if she said anything, it could escalate again. Thankfully, her tears never fell, but the brooding anger was still there, just enough that she had to think about it.

As the panic attacked girl spoke, comparing her pain to a bag full of stink bombs and the boy burst out in laughter, Katrina couldn’t help the smirk that pulled her lips. At that, Katrina finally felt herself cooling down.

Surprisingly, the boy jumped in with some kind words. From what she could tell, this was very uncharacteristic of him, but after seeing the sympathy that only comes from having the same experience, she couldn’t blame him.

At his comment about that being what the headmaster was for, she bit back a scoff. The headmaster has been gone for months now, she had gone to talk to him about it right when he disappeared. And Gryffindor, none of them understood, besides Pierre, but Katrina hated the fact that her past put a damper on his optimistic mood.

His description of her family put another smirk on her face. No one in the school knew about her horrible family besides those two. That was the one thing she never wanted to bring up, but now that she had, she was glad it was off her chest.

As he apologized, Katrina turned from the window. His words were incredibly sincere, however, puzzling enough, his face was emotionless. It seemed she was not the only one who was able to slip on a mask. A small part of Katrina wanted to help him, but she knew this was not the time or the emotion to.

There was a brief bit of silence that Katrina didn’t know how to fill. She knew an apology wouldn’t be sincere since her emotions were still running too high. But thanking them would be petty if she didn’t apologize. She was still raw from everything and the drastic mood swings that left her still empty.

She looked back out the window, feeling a mix of emotions that would flicker on her face as she tried to hide them. “Well, sorry and thank you...” She rubbed her left sleeve, hoping her companion would give her the words to say. Nothing came.

Katrina turned to the girl, wanting more closure than that, “I-uh am really sorry for causing you to have a panic attack.” The second year was aware how flat her words sounded, “It was wrong and stupid of me to say anything, and I want you to know that I wouldn’t have actually done anything... I’m horrible at casting bad spells because I don’t actually want to hurt anyone,” A blush tinged her cheeks and Katrina quickly turned to the window to wipe the emotion from her face.

She paused, unsure of what to say to the boy, but wanting to thank him for his surprising honesty, “And, well— thanks for stepping in,” At a loss for words, the red-head looked at her reflection in the mirror. The girl looking back looked surprisingly well put together, not at all how she was feeling.

Katrina wanted to wash her face and cool down. She wanted to pet her cat and read a book, maybe write some to get things out of her head. She wanted more closure and to apologize more, but she also didn’t want to not be honest.

Instead, she turned back to them and actually looked them in their eyes. It was the first time she actually had. The girl looked slightly afraid but also still wanting to help. The boy, however, was hard to read. He seemed almost apologetic or maybe just sympathetic, but Katrina couldn’t be sure. The small part of her knew that if she made eye contact that her emotions would be easy to read, but hopefully they would see everything that words couldn’t say.

Elspeth took a deep breath out. The situation seemed resolved, the girl had gotten to cry out her feelings for a little bit. No one was hurt. She couldn't really have asked for a better ending to it all. Maybe if she was lucky no one would learn her name and they'd forget this all happened soon enough. So, how was she going to pull herself away from this situation delicately enough that everything stayed as okay as it was?

Her hand reached back for the knob and she turned to leave. As her body continued to reground itself after her panic attack she began to feel more acutely just how hungry she was. Her stomach began to rumble painfully and audibly. Elspeth reached her hand down to lay on top of her gut and apply some pressure. It looked like she was headed down to the Great Hall for some food.

"Um, okay well I hope you feel better. By -" she cut herself off while walking through the door, then running down the hall as fast as she could go. That had to have been one of the most uncomfortable situations Elspeth had ever been in in her life.

She got down to the ground floor okay, but had to stop at the end of the banister to catch her breath for a moment. Her body was still shaking, slightly. From the nerves, her hunger, and the intense feeling of- well, Elspeth couldn't recognize it at the time. She thought it was guilt, that it was her fault everything went wrong up there. But it was actually the feeling of vulnerability. That she'd allowed herself to get close enough to someone to talk about such a raw trauma. Elspeth had never done that before and now was left feeling a bit exposed to the world. Given how strong her guard had to be up normally for her to get out of the room, being hit with this feeling at the bottom of the stairs was overwhelming. But her primal need for food overran her social need to get away from people to avoid embarrassment. So she walked into the Great Hall and proceeded to try and forget that this had ever happened.

“By-” The Ravenclaw cut herself off by running out the door as fast as she possibly could, leaving Wyatt alone with the Walker girl.

“Right,” he said. He turned from the door to the Gryffindor, then back to the door, then back to the Gryffindor. What was he going to say? He used up all of his kindness, and his fidgeting wasn’t making him look… not like a Hufflepuff. He’d been in uncomfortable positions before, but none this personal.

The worst part about it was that he could relate. Her emotions triggered something in him and he felt like he was going to have a breakdown, one that would rival even Katrina’s, but as he always did, he kept his emotions, his feelings, inside. He didn’t notice as his face fell, not frowning but almost… aging as he felt a wave of sadness rush over him.

“I hope you feel better soon,” he said, almost professionally. His words didn’t hold any tone of sarcasm, coldness, pity, or even encouragement. They were hollow.

Wyatt opened the door and looked out, quietly checking if the Gryffindor bullies were waiting for him. He didn’t see them and turned back to look at Katrina.

“Goodbye.”

With that, Wyatt stepped out of the lavatory and made his way to the Great Hall.

Katrina watched as the girl quickly dismissed herself. It was a guilty feeling that she couldn’t do more, but Katrina knew that there was nothing she really could do. It was only a wish that Katrina could clear things up one day.

Katrina turned as the boy spoke to her. He seemed off, eerily similar to how Katrina had been for months. Professional and flat. He was the shell that Katrina felt like. It was so odd seeing someone as pained as she was. He excused himself and turned back before leaving.

Hey, wait!” Katrina bit her lip from the outburst, hoping he would turn. She wanted to reach out or at least tell him that she was open if he wanted to talk. It seemed like he needed to talk as much as she had. “If you-ever need to talk. Um, I’m here.” Katrina inwardly cringed, the words didn’t quite come out as good as she had wanted.

Realizing that she hadn’t been quick enough, Katrina turned back to the window. She looked back to her reflection in the mirror and sighed. Everything had gone wrong today.

Katrina was glad that the storm raging within her had died and waited a few minutes before leaving the bathrooms. She needed to do something. Maybe she would write down everything. Katrina remembered a journal that had laid empty in the bottom of her trunk for months. She would fill it up. She could skip dinner and write instead, her stomach was still twisted in confused knots. Maybe this could be the turning point.

She could get better from here. She could fix everything. She could put herself back together again. She could fix herself. She could finally calm the storm within her.
