We Double Dare You!

3 October 2025
Colin was excited! He and Liam and their American cousin Cursa had come up with a cunning and brilliant plan. They'd set the day and time for some fun for Friday afternoon, after classes, in the Great Hall. The boys had spent some time preparing for the grand event by heading down to the kitchens and --- very politely, one might add! --- asking the school Elves for all the goodies they would need. And during lunch, they'd gone around to all the classrooms putting up very neatly written little posters:
EMMI!EMMI!EMMI!
WE DOUBLE DARE YOU !!!
Come to the Great Hall on 3rd October for some super spicy
pre-Ball fun!! After classes!!
First and Second Years Especially --- Cos ye need to learn
all the great traditions of Snogwarts HOGWARTS!!!
EMMI!EMMI!EMMI!
What could possibly go wrong with three highly experienced fifth year wizarding students set about to helping the younger years learn all about Hogwarts history and tradition? That's right! Absolutely nothing could possibly go wrong! The boys giggled and whispered conspiratorially among themselves as they set up a part of the Ravenclaw table for the afternoon's entertainment.
Cursa cracked open one of the jars. He sniffed at it and gagged! "What is this shite then, eh? You don't actually eat this sludge do you?"
Liam snagged the jar and sniffed it too. "Coo, marmite! This stuff's brills, Curses! Ye need to expand yer palate more lad!"
"Right. I've got the dried peppers here. Oh! And I found some Muggle stuff called pepper spray! I had no idea Muggles sprayed pepper on their food! The Elves assured me that these crushed Carolina reapers ---"
"Oh, that's American!" said Cursa.
"--- no joking! Cos the jar says 'Carolina'!" Colin jabbed Cursa's ribs affectionately. "These and the jar of moruga scorpions would, and I quote, 'burn a hole in a young wizard's tongue'!" The boys rummaged in their satchels and fetched out a number of glass tumblers and other condiments and ingredients.
"Canned anchovies?" asked Cursa. "What's this for?"
"Ah!" replied Liam. "That's for one of our special treats! A quick and tasty little potion called patum pepperum!"
"Speaking of potions, lads," Colin said with a smirk; "I've brought a bit of babbling beverage and some of Gregory's finest! Oo! And some laugh inducing potion! I reckon a wee drop of the good stuff will do the kiddos good!"
The boys left most of the tumblers empty, whilst into some they poured plain water, and into a couple others, a little bit of gentle humour! Some of the kids would need it after taking up the McCoire Gang on their dares!
"Right! I think we've got everything! Condiments, spices, pastes, jams, jellies, chutneys, Albert sauce, tamarind chutney, chip spice, Cumberland sauce, Tewksbury mustard, Sarson's, pickled walnuts, mushy pease, garam masala, fish sauce, vinegar, chamanthi, banana ketchup --- I didn't even know half of these were a thing! What else do we have?"
"I brought some actual cranberry sauce, not that sugary garbage they put in cans either! I've got some karo, some hummus, and oh! and maple syrup of course!"
"Ye mean like from trees?" asked Liam.
"Mhm! And some piccalilli and some tonic syrups. I've got Moxie, Cel-Ray, Mustardpop, Ginger Beer, and switchel!"
Colin nodded happily. "Now we just have to wait and see how many kids actually show up for our little dare!"

OOC NOTES!:
This is an open, mass thread! Show up, get dared by three fifth years to drink some bat shit crazy combination of condiments, sauces, spices, and sweet jellies, all mixed with a variety of liquids like tea, fizzy water, milk, vinegar, fruit juice, coffee, etc!
IC date is 3 October 2025, the day before the ball. If you're a first year who signed up later in the year, this is a good way to write in a backdated thread and give your character some history!
THE ROOLZ!:
1. Show up and post your arrival! Chat with the others, gawk at all the weird condiments and sauces, all the gravies, and jams, and chutneys. If the Hogwarts kitchens have it, it'll be on the table! For your action, just let me know if you choose the DARE, or if you choose the easy way out and just enjoy a nice glass of --- is that really water!?!?![]()
2. If you choose the Dare, Colin gets to pick what combination of totally awesomé ingredients you get to drink! If you choose the prefilled glasses, Tatsu gets to decide whether you escaped and end up drinking water, or whether you got one of Colin's dubious potions!![]()
3. Post again with your reaction to the proffered drink or potion!![]()
4. Don't worry if you spontaneously combust! Colin is a trained hospital wing intern!![]()
5. Thread is especially for first and second years (cos they don't know any better!) but any year students are welcome! INPCs are welcome!![]()
6. Have fun! Pails are available for those who can't keep down their marmite, peanut butter, and vinegar fizzy drink!![]()
Keep your mind in hell; and don't despair.

@Lauren Vanes@Colin McCoire My first post, no actions yet!
Rosie had finally finished her classes for the day, and was more than ready to go and see what in the world this whole 'Double Dare' thing going on today was. She'd seen the posters up in classrooms, advertising some 'spicy fun' in the Great Hall after classes on the third. It was calling first and second years, which was definitely her!
But, the promise of fun and a cool way to prevent boredom after class wasn't the true reason that Rosie wanted to go. She had a friend, Lauren Vanes, who could definitely use a good distraction from...well...just life in general, to be honest. So, she'd seen her friend in the Common Room, and asked her to meet Rosie there!
As Rosie walked into the Great Hall, she saw all of the condiments, spices, and jellies laid out, supposedly for the event being hosted. She had no idea what exactly this all would involve, but she was ready for whatever would happen, just as long as her friend would come.
She walked around where everything was, seeing all of the things there. She didn't recognize all of them, and gathered that some must be American(they just seemed like it).

Sorry if it is too long; it just flew to me.
Lillian was curious of why the same poster was put up in multiple classrooms. The way the poster was written sounded like the writer was troublesome. But, whatever was going on must be perfectly fine and in accordance with the rules, or there wouldn't be so many posters. If what was going on was bad, a professor would have found out and the event would have been put to a stop already.
So, goody-goody Lillian wasn't worried about breaking rules, she was worried that she wouldn't be well-received by people already there. But she was very curious and was going to come anyway. The posters deeply encouraged first and second years to go, for some reason. She could use that to her advantage if someone started saying that she wasn't wanted there. Memories of being teased and shoved throughout her muggle school years never left her, especially mental injuries done by the main bullies at her muggle school, Adam and Adele Johnson.
Adam and Adele would be creative about their insults to people. They were the ones that would make fun of her the most. Most people would make fun off her looks, caring about school, or that her families' Mexican gardener only worked for a week before quitting. But, Adam and Adele picked on her for anything at all. Sadly, Lillian noticed that their favorite target was her. The siblings would team up against her and feed on each other's energy and clever insults. Lillian avoided them as much as she possibly could.
That is one of the reasons that she is already a second year and doesn't have any friends. It is also one of the reasons Lillian is an avid reader and is usually at the library. Books never put people down. She could always count on them to be the same kind selves they were last time she read them.
Lillian shivered at the mix of embarrassing memories she got. That is why she has been wary of people she doesn't know ever since. That is also why ever since coming to Hogwarts she was making a goal of being quiet and discreet. So far, for slightly over a year it was working.
That's why Lillian decided that she would watch at the back of whatever-this-was and hopefully not bother anybody.
She finally entered the Great Hall, and was puzzled at what was going on. Lillian sat on the edge of the Hufflepuff table so she could watch the Ravenclaw table, since all the action seemed to be happening there, but not look like she was there. Lillian had brought Hogwarts, A History with her as a disguise to look like she was reading, or to actually read if this event was less interesting than it seemed. She remembered the last time that she had bravely sat at the Hufflepuff table. It was sitting with the new Professor Kāne, about a half of a year ago.
Lillian noticed that the Ravenclaw table was covered in what looked like a large assortment of liquids and sauces. Some were muggle ones that she had seen at home. Others were magical ones that she had seen here at Hogwarts. Even a couple she knew to be American from knowledge about her Aunt Jenny and Uncle Ralph's life in America and her knowledge about history. Several others she had no idea where they came from, but she assumed it to fit one of these categories.
Lillian was even more curious now. What was going on? Why were so many liquids needed? She found herself completely facing the Ravenclaw table and watching directly. Lillian was still holding the textbook open in her lap, but it was obvious that she was watching the action and not reading, no matter what she wanted anyone to think.

Lily had seen her brother's invitation to the "dare game", and even though she had a million things to do, lots of homework to do, plus study, she decided to go. To at least keep the trouble to a minimum level. Though to be honest she might joinnin more than keeping it down. After all Colin brought out the troublemaker side of her, both him and Liam. Walking into the room, she walked over to Liam, Colin, and Cursa. "Hey, guys. What are you three doing?" She picked up a glass and sniffed it before hastily putting it down. "Who thought this idea up? Not going to lie, someone will get sick of this." She rolled her eyes as she nudged Liam with her shoulder. "Was it your crazy twin?" She winked at Colin. "Come on, Colin. I choose Dare, you going to poison me?" She was definitely teasing them, the way her eyes twinkled mischievously as she watched the victims come in. A lot of them were first years and her trepidation was high, yet she was interested in seeing how many were brave enough to do it. How many of them truly trusted the McCoires. Hah that's funny. Trusting the McCoires.

Nicole stopped just inside the Great Hall. She stared at what she saw, her blue-grey eyes growing wide. Half the classrooms had posters on them, so she'd expected something weird, but she hadn't expected the Ravenclaw table to be covered in so many jars and bottles and suspiciously bubbling liquids.
Some might have, but the Hogwarts kitchens looked as if they had emptied every cupboard. She came toward us slowly, satchel still thrown over one shoulder, her posture still the same. First she saw jars of something dark and sticky. She sat up and wrinkled her nose a little and leaned forward and sniffed. And then she knew it was marmite. Her grandmother had very strong opinions about it. That was something to worry her. But behind her caution there was a glint of curiosity. She didn't even get to Hogwarts proper. She was supposed to experiment. And they could appear to melt a cauldron?
And when she saw Rosie and Lauren close at hand she smiled at them in turn. She glanced at the rows of glasses. "The fifth-years have been ... thorough," she said softly. Some of the glasses were clear, some were cloudy, some were glowing in ways she was fairly sure drinks shouldn't.
Nicole folded her hands before her and observed the pandemonium with a mixture of fascination and mild alarm. “I don’t know what we’ve walked into, but it feels… exciting,” she said, in a risky sort of way.
She glanced at the older boys hosting the event. loud. certain. Clearly pleased with themselves. That was either reassuring or deeply disturbing, she couldn't tell. Somehow she was here now. And she wouldn't be the first Ravenclaw to run away either.

Lily watched as more and more people came in. Standing next to Colin, she felt sorry for the victims. And victims they were. The way Colin, Liam, and Cursa had it set up someone was going to get either hurt or seriously sick. "Merlins beard, Colin. These concoctions sound gross." Lily says to him, wrinkling her nose as she looked at the line of potions listed. Good Lord, even she was scared to try some of these. Lily glanced up at a first year Slytherin from the looks of it. "I would not choose dare if I were you. Though if your as ambitious as Slytherin is made out to be, be my guest." Lily looked over the door as @Nicole Able, and @Emi Sato came in. She couldn't help herself but she grinned at Colin and whispered, "Any chance your girlfriend might join?." Glancing over at Liam, she says in a voice that would carry, "It'd be fun to see if Emily can give Lover boy here a run for his money, wouldn't it?" She had to stifle a giggle at the look on Colin's face and she gave him an angelic smile. She could be an angel if she sooo wanted to. A fallen angel.

A few kids had shown up for the festivities. Cursa only recognised one of them. Lily. Colin and Liam had told him all about that girl! Quite frankly, Cursa thought she was pretty cool! Anyone who could so seriously tease Colin was a-okay in his books! He watched as Liam rummaged around in his battered satchel and drew out The Book! The boys had shown him last night.
Twas one of those things Colin and Liam had found in an old used book shop somewhere. It wasn't huge by any stretch of the imagination, but it really did look old and was filled with all kinds of sigils and symbols, most of which meant absolutely nothing to Cursa. Its heavy paper pages were yellowed and the leather binding was old and worn. Someone had written a title on the cover, some time in the last three centuries, but that was so faint as to be almost undreadable! Colin had explained to him that the green sparks charm actually worked to reveal the title!
COLIN & EMMI SITTING IN A TREE!
K - I - S - S - I - N - G!
⊀⊀ ⊀⊀⊀ ⊀⊀⊀⊀⊀ ⊀⊀⊀⊀⊀⊀⊀ ✭ ⊁⊁⊁⊁⊁⊁⊁ ⊁⊁⊁⊁⊁ ⊁⊁⊁ ⊁⊁⊀⊀ ⊀⊀⊀ ⊀⊀⊀⊀⊀ ⊀⊀⊀⊀⊀⊀⊀ ✭ ⊁⊁⊁⊁⊁⊁⊁ ⊁⊁⊁⊁⊁ ⊁⊁⊁ ⊁⊁
Cursa looked over at what Colin was doing. He was busy mashing a bunch of things together in a small cauldron. Cursa raised an eyebrow, noting all the weird things he was mixing together. The odors of ginger and cinnamon being heated soon mingled with butter and anchovies.
"Merlins beard, Colin. These concoctions sound gross," Lily said to Colin. "I would not choose dare if I were you. Though if your as ambitious as Slytherin is made out to be, be my guest."
Cursa laughed. "Oh, it's every bit as gross as that, Lily! I think some of these brave people will wish they'd drunk the mystery potion!" He watched as Colin's face turned pink and then red when Lily asked his cousin if Emily would be joining! Cursa figured that Colin never even mentioned this little exercise to his beloved sweetheart!
Liam and Cursa reviewed the book that lay between them and began selecting their own condiments. Cursa thunked the bottles on the table in front of him, sliding empty glasses towards him in which he mixed up his super yummy concoctions. Looking at each of the players in turn, he smiled. "So! Each of you has chosen to undertake our little challenge! Only Lily has chosen the mystery drink. Hmm. That might have been the smarter choice! But we shall see!"
Once the three boys finished mixing up their concoctions, they smirked and pushed glasses full of sludgy, lumpy, smelly, gloppy goop towards the kids across from them.
"Drink up!" cried Colin. "Try not to die!!"
Cursa snorted. He leaned over to Liam, whispering: "Colin has such a way with words!"

MODERATION:
Each of the six participants would have listened to what the older boys were saying as they mixed up some rather dubious looking and, frankly, horrible smelling mixtures. Only one of them accepted the dare. A McCoire, naturally! As the others awaited their doom, they watched as the American boy, and the Scottish twins grabbed various bottles and set to work mixing things together and stirring in various liquids. Surely they would be questioning their life choices at this moment! Should I have just taken the dare and downed one of those innocuous looking clear(ish) liquids?
OOC Notes: Feel free to encourage your fellow victims contestants as you all slurp down what really are horrific combinations of flavours that do not mix together well!
@Lily Isobel McCoire, Y4 Gryffindor takes the Dare! : She gets a potion! And that potions is: Confusing Concoction! Let's see how Lily reacts to a potion that when ingested, causes confusion and a heightened sense of paranoia in the affected person, making it difficult to tell friend from foe. And the victim of Lily's paranoia is: Liam! Poor innocent Liam!@Rosalyn Willows, Y1 Slytherin: She gets Colin's Super Special Concoction! This consists of a lovely mixture of Patum Pepperium and Pumpkin Pie Spice! Rosalyn might at first be thinking, oo yummy! Pumpkin spice! But wait, there's more! Her sludgy concoction is a mixture of super-salty, fermented, savory anchovy liquid and a warm, and delicate sweet-leaning baking blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. And! It's all sloshing around in just a little too much butter!
This is horrible because: whilst cinnamon and nutmeg are often used in savory dishes they require a delicate hand and specific balance. Rest assured, Rosalyn, Colin's hand was nothing like delicate when scooping in the sweet, woody baking spices in with the pungent, fishy saltiness of Patum Pepperium! He's created for you a bizarre sensory conflict. Your brain expects a cozy autumn pumpkin pie but what your mouth actually gets hit with is rotting ocean water instead.
Enjoy!@Lauren Vanes, Y1 Slytherin: Liam slides a glass full of Flavour Extravaganza No. 2 across the table! This consists of a totally appetising combination of asafetida (known to our Indian friends as hing) which is a super savory, sulfurous, allium-like spice; and it is paired with the sweet, aromatic, floral extract of vanilla! Will she be able to keep the brownish goo that Liam has prepared for her down? Or will she need the pail!
This mixture is horrible because: asafoetida is an incredible spice when cooked in oil, where it mellows into a beautiful leek-and-garlic flavor. However, Liam completely forgot to cook the hing in oil! Lauren's glass is full of sludge combining the raw, sweaty, sulfurous notes of the asafetida mushed into the sweet, perfumed vanillin. His sensitive werewolfy nose would prompt him to say: "Whoa! It smells and probably tastes like a vanilla cupcake baked inside a sweaty gym shoe!" Bon apetit, Lauren!@Lillian McMason, Y2 Gryffindor: Colin smirks. His smirk has "drink it all up Gryffindorque!" all over it! Lillian is the lucky recipient of another masterpiece of Colin's culinary wizardry! She would hear him proudly declare that it's the Japan-UK Knock-Out Combo Number One! Her glass is full of that super pungent sinus clearing heat of wasabi mixed with the even more knock-out punch of extra salty and concentrated yeast yumminess known as Marmite! "YUM!" Colin exclaims. "Drink it up lass!"
Colin's mixed drink is horrible because: Wasabi's volatile vapour gets up into your nose, while Marmite is a strong umami bomb that coats your tongue. The problem is, when the two are mixed together, the intense bitterness of the yeast extract embraces the sharp wasabi burn right on the back of your throat! This creates a bitter, burning paste that tastes like salty, oxidized metal. Super yum! Enjoy that burn, Lillian!@Nicole Abel, Y1 Ravenclaw: Wit and wisdom seem to have flown the coop, as the only Ravenclaw, apart from Liam, awaits her housemate's concoction! Nicole is lucky to receive Liam's own No. 3 Petrol Perfection! This thick and heavy mixture combines the delicious slightly sweet and deeply fermented Korean gochujang with the rich and earthy musk truffle oil!
This stuff is horrible because: One might normally think that the fermented funk of gochujang would naturally get along with the earthy funk of truffle. But one would be wrong! Not only did Liam misread one of the bottles, adding that well known emetic castor oil; but the sweet and sharp heat of gochujang slashes right through the truffle oil like a warrior smashing through a horde of skeletal liche fighters! This causes the complex aroma of the truffle to warp into something mimicking cheap gasoline or burning rubber. Excellent! Maybe that extra dose of castor oil will come to poor Nicole's rescue after all!@Emi Sato, Y1 Mahoutokoro: Last but not least, our visiting first year Emi Sato is about to slurp down a whole glass full of Cursa's Biochemical Warfare Against Cuisine! Of all the wonderful and delicious flavours on offer from the Hogwarts kitchens, Cursa had to mix up something that should probably be made illegal by the Ministry of Magic! Emi's poor mouth is about to be assaulted by a wonderful mixture of salmiakki, Finland's national treat, salt licorice! But wait! This isn't any ordinary salty-sweet treat! Salmiakki is salted with ammonium chloride! That's right Emi, salty ammonia! Yum! And that's not all, Cursa has added to this excursion to flavourtown an extra yummy helping of belachan, a variety of fermented shrimp paste!
This stuff is the absolute worst of horrible because: the sharp and medicinally tongue numbing ammonium chloride and intense anise seed of the licorice is now combined with a super pungent, pickled and fermented slam of alkalinity from the fermented and sun-dried shrimp mash!
Salmiakki on its own tastes bad enough to many people not used to its pungent taste. It provides a slightly salty sting not unlike battery acid. Mix that with the intensely fishy and salty belachan and it tastes like you're swabbing the deck of a fishing trawler with harsh floor stripper! The strong hints of ammonia and decay will trick Emi's brain into thinking she's drinking something incredibly toxic! Sweet!

Lily smirked at Cursa as he said that the mystery drink was the smarter choice. He wasn't wrong at all about that...or so she thought until he plopped down the drink in front of her. "Uhm. You expect me to drink that?" Lily asked in askance. It looked and smelled terrible. She couldn't help but gag a little at the smell. "Okay then guess I'm drinking this." Lily held her nose as she gulped the drink as fast as possible. Then turned away as she gagged and tried to keep it down. "Merlins beard that shit is terrible." She turned back to the boys, shaking her head a bit. Things were starting to cloud a little. For instance, she had no idea why she was here. She blinked and looked around as paranoia started to set in. She felt like something bad was going to happen to her, she couldn't tell what though. Maybe somebody was going to attack her. Maybe it was someone in this room. Her eyes locked on Liam. He seems like someone who would do that. Lily backed up a step, her eyes flashing with something a kindle to fear, slipping her wand out. The potion was really doing its job making her think that Liam would attack her. "Get away," she said hoarsely her voice tinged with a unspoken emotion.
