The Ravenclaw Table 2019 -2020
Elspeth agreed with Carolyn that Slytherin students couldn’t be all that bad but her eyes lingered on their table for a second as if to check on them. Perhaps she had doubts after all. Carolyn couldn’t really blame her however. It was true that she didn’t have anything against them but their bad reputation had long been firmly established and she had heard many unpleasant stories from her mother as well. Still since she had no experience of her own, she decided to leave the judgement for later and keep in mind that even if she had some, there would always be plenty of nice people among them as well. Maybe I’m overthinking again. She could have simply looked in their direction because we were talking about them, she reprimanded herself finally. It wasn’t a big deal anyway and they had far more interesting things to talk about.
“That’s sounds amazing. I’m actually really looking forward to learning about all the magical creatures. I have always loved animals and now I get a chance to add magic to them? It’s like a dream come true.” Carolyn nodded enthusiastically. She still wasn’t sure if that would be her career but she could definitely picture herself doing it. “Your mother sounds pretty impressive. I mean even if it’s not considered a proper job, helping others is always admirable. Then again, I might be a little bit biased. My mom works at St Mungo's Hospital and my dad works at a muggle hospital so that’s all I know.” And yet, I don’t really feel like following in their footsteps, she thought almost immediately. Those were honorable professions for sure but seeing how little time they have for anything else…even for their own daughter…She wasn’t confident that kind of life would make her happy. Perhaps her opinion would change with time but for now that was her view of the matter. “So you have grown up surrounded by other wizards as well? I only got my mom for that. I’m still grateful but I wish I had more of them in my life. It would have made this whole experience so much easier.” Carolyn admitted as she was slowly finishing her dinner. Truth to be told, she begged her mother many times to take her to work so she could explore the wizarding world a little bit more but she has never won that argument. “You are far too young for that. It’s not a place for a child. I’ll take you when you’re older,” she promised every time.” How old however, she never said.

The Ravenclaw Table 2019 -2020
Elspeth stopped eating for a moment as Carolyn's words landed in her brain a bit more. Oh yeah. Woah. There are kids here who have never been around wizards at ALL. And they're HERE? How are they not just losing their minds? She was happy that she'd been raised in a fairly mixed town, so she'd spent plenty of time with muggles and wizards. It made for fewer surprises when she bumped into one or the other in her daily life. Plus, as much as some wizards maligned muggles for being ineffectual, Elspeth thought that a lot of non-magical processes were actually also very special. How hard they'd work to climb all the way to the top of a mountain without levitating or apparating. How they'd managed to get into space! She wasn't yet sure of exactly what she wanted to do to make money when she grew up, and part of that was because she saw so many options as being valuable to her.
"Yeah, I can't imagine just jumping headfirst into all of this feels very good. It's a lot to take in, I mean," she didn't want Carolyn to think that Elspeth thought less of her for not having grown up around more magic, "It's just, it's sort of like a whole other world, innit? Especially if you've mostly grown up around muggles. I can't imagine how kids from all muggle families handle it. But, y'know, the secret is that it's not like any of us really know more than any other, what with none of us being allowed to do magic outside of school anyways."
She was going on far longer than she normally would in a conversation like this. Her food tended to be the thing she'd focus most on, but as they continued to talk Elspeth had begun to eat less and talk more, feeling more at ease with Carolyn. Huh, maybe... maybe I can make a friend here after all.

The Ravenclaw Table 2019 -2020
Carolyn finished her observation and watched her seatmate freeze. What she thought was rather simple statement, obviously stirred some sudden realization in the other girl. Then again, Elspeth probably never had to think about such things until now and she would no doubt have many similar moments in the future as well. Most likely even more than her classmate. So many habits that students from wizarding world find common would appear fascinating to her, who lived amongst muggles until now. “Yes, exactly,” she confirmed Elspeth’s remark about the whole other world. “I mean, my mom used spells around the house of course but that’s about it. I have never set foot into the wizarding world until now. I can’t really imagine what it’s like for muggle born wizards and witches. Everything must be so shocking.” It was true, she was at least somewhat prepared for what’s to come but they truly had no idea whatsoever. “I’m not bitter about it though. It feels good to have full experience of both worlds. Many wouldn’t agree with me but I think muggle world has its own kind of magic. There is so much effort in everything they do and the science is truly fascinating.” She liked to talk about these things. She was absolutely thrilled that she got to explore the world of magic but there were plenty delightful things within the muggle lifestyle as well. If someone was willing to listen, she would gladly tell them all about it.
“Listen, Elspeth…” Carolyn braced herself for what she was about to say. “If you ever want to hang out outside of classes, I would be very happy to. I’m sure we could find some interesting hobbies to share as well,” she offered with a gentle smile. She probably didn’t look nervous as she said it but Carolyn was uneasy and troubled in her mind. She could handle it if things didn’t work out and they didn’t become friends after all but she was worried she wouldn’t even get a chance to try. That would be awfully embarrassing and devastating. She didn’t think she was annoying and the conversation went well so far but one could never be sure. They were, after all, two different people and Elspeth didn’t necessarily have to feel the same.

The Ravenclaw Table 2019 -2020
Elspeth swallowed her soup slightly the wrong way, and tried to cover it up as best as she could, but began coughing a little - and then coughing a lot. She covered her mouth with the crook of her robe sleeve but just couldn't stop, her eyes watering and her voice a little hoarse. Quickly she reached out for a goblet of water and starting sipping from it slowly and deliberately. One moment she'd be feeling elated at the realization that she'd made a friend, already! And now here she was feeling embarrassed to have once again done something daft in front of her housemates. The world had a way of balancing itself out like that. Oddly quickly, too.
Once her coughs had subsided, and her sniffled abated Elspeth smiled at Carolyn (eyes a little bleary from the tears that had pooled during the fit). "Yeah! I think that would be really nice Carolyn. Maybe we can go to classes together the first week." She couldn't believe how soon classes were going to start. That was another new thing for her. Because her mother had homeschooled her, Elspeth had never actually been in a class with other students. Well, she'd been enrolled in a local preschool, but she got kicked out after biting someone a week in so that didn't really count to her. Thankfully she'd seen a couple movies about classes so she was fairly certain she understood what she had to do. Hand raising seemed important. Also, possibly, giving her teacher an apple on the first day?
A small tickle in the back of Elspeth's throat persisted even after she'd finished drinking the water. Not wanting to continue coughing on or near everyone's food she stood up for a moment. She didn't want Carolyn to think she was running away from their conversation, but also she definitely couldn't stay at the table much longer. Most all of her food was finished anyways and she was suddenly feeling exhausted from all of the first day activities. "Hey, I think I'm going to head up to the dorms now. I -" she coughed twice and wiped a tear from one of her eyes, "I think I need to lay down for a second after," she coughed again, "swallowing some soup the wrong way. I'm so sorry. But I'll see you up there, yeah?"
She waved goodbye to her new friend, then made her way out of the hall, past walls of black cotton robes and students laughing and happy to see each other again. When she got to the Great Hall's main door, she stopped for a second, turned around, and looked back. It already felt a little bit like home.

The Ravenclaw Table 2019 -2020
Adela walked over to the ravenclaw table in a daze.
Ravenclaw? How could she be in ravenclaw? She was not smart. Wasn’t ravenclaw supposed to be the house for the wise?
She took the seat closest to the door that lead to the hallway. The clapping died down and She looked around at the rest of the table, was she just imagining it or did they all look crazy smart?
She didn’t even know about magic until recently, everyone else here probably had been doing magic for years. She did not belong here.
Suddenly food appeared before her. She let out a gasp, she quickly tried to mask her surprise. She hoped no one saw that that she was Surprised.
Apparently someone else was surprised too. The girl sitting next to her let out a little gasp. She looked at Adela and said “oh goodness! Food just appeared out of nowhere!”
Adela smiled “I know, its pretty cool.”
The girl nodded in agreement “I’m Nichol, Your a first year right?”
Adela nodded.
“I’m muggle born” Nichol said nervously “I don’t know much about magic, do you think I will be behind?”
Adela whispered “me too, I don’t know. I don’t really think this is the right house for me. I’m not a brilliant wizard.”
A girl across the table from Adela and Nichol suddenly said “you two will be fine, Lots of kids are from the muggle world. And everyone here is starting from the beginning, no one can use magic outside of school until their 17.” A few people at the table nodded in agreement. The girl went on “ the sorting hat is never wrong. you’ll find that ravenclaw is perfect for you.”
People at the table cheered and smiled at Adela. Adela felt a little better, maybe ravenclaw would be right for her.
She looked over at the girl across from her and said “I’m Adela”
The girl smiled and said “hi, welcome to ravenclaw”.

The Ravenclaw Table 2019 -2020
Nell stood quietly in the back if the group of First Years. The had just come off the boats leading to the castle, specifically the Great Hall. Nell was indeed nervous, and stood at the back, not wanting to draw much attention to herself. She was that kind of person. Her black robes swayed behind her as she walked into the building. Nell glanced up and saw candles, but not any type of candle. These candles were floating in the air. No strings and no dripping wax whatsoever. Nell was surprised and blown away by this.
Magic was new to the Muggle - Born. She had never expected it to real though weird things always happened around her. Nell had thought it was her clumsiness, but when she got her Hogwarts letter, everything made sense: the weird occurrences, strange encounters, and, well, things were just odd in general.
Nell stood in front of the Headmaster and other professors as a few talked about Hogwarts, its history, and what a great year it would be. This felt familiar for this is what Nell's teachers would do every year at her school back in Cork. She missed it a bit, but she was glad to be at Hogwarts. It seemed more like home per say than her actual home.
The names of various first years were read in alphabetical order by the Headmaster. Nell was a bit relaxed for she would most likely go last. And then it happened. "Zoldak, Nell," read the Headmaster. Nell walked up to the chair shakily. She already knew her cheeks were red without looking at them. Nell took a seat in the chair and the hat was placed upon her head. She knew the hat was talking to her, and only her for she had witnessed that with the other First Years.
"Ah, a wise young mind. Creative. A bit of feistiness here and there . . . hmm . . . where to put you . . ." the hat said to her. She was anxious. Nell had a strong desire for Ravenclaw, and the hat must have heard that. "Ravenclaw? Oh agree indeed," the hat said. Nell smiled as the hat announced her house. "RAVENCLAW!" it yelled. The Ravenclaw table erupted in cheers as Nell scurried down to the far end of it.
Nell Zoldak was finally home.

The Ravenclaw Table 2019 -2020
Adelyn was a bit wary of all the chatter, ears used to the soft wind and dog barking. She mainly kept to herself, fiddling with her hands and peering around as if she'd rather be somewhere much different.
Though, she couldn't hide the smile she bore upon hearing some of the nearby Ravenclaw's conversation, a small giggle bubbling from her throat. She moved her eyes to sneakily watch those involved in this conversation, careful to hide her laughs behind practiced polite smiles.
She continued to daydream about riding Hipogriffs and shining a unicorn's horn, picking at her collection of fruit.
For some reason, Adelyn had always loved fruits, and now, they reminded her of home. She aggressively jabbed some yellow and pink fruit, and was delighted by its sweet taste. Realizing she must look stupid being so involved in her food and in nothing else, she began eating in the practicing, formal way her parents had taught.
Occasionally she would offer her two cents when asked, or supply her name, but she was too worried about being proper to really involve herself in any fun conversations or topics.
Eventually, Adelyn felt as though she had tried enough, and stood to go slink back into the quiet outside the hall.
