"Maybe because you're brave, you just don't go flaunting it around. I mean, you snapped at me for being in a daydream pretty quickly when we first got assignment to work together,"
she smiled. Yes, she had picked up on that.

"I didn't think I was a fit for Hufflepuff at all when I was first punished there by the hat...but it didn't like the sass I gave it. Thought Hufflepuff would do me well and...I don't know, I think the friends I've met in that house have actually helped me find better parts of myself." Maybe the hat was right...but she wouldn't openly say that.

"I kinda wish it wasn't towards the end of term though. I don't want to go back to the loneliness. Even Bella and I who used to be so inseparable are very different people now," she shrugged. "But it's just for the summer, right? Then we'll be right back here and maybe you and I can still continue on with our study sessions and be study buddies. Emphasis on the buddies part because I'm starting to have more difficult times with life than my classes." Drama. Such was growing up, wasn't it. And surely Rose would have the same and it would be nice if they both had someone they could confide in about things.

Rose pondered what Alina had said about maybe being brave on the inside. "Maybe," she answered. "It's never really obvious where you belong. With some people, it is, but there are a lot of house stereotypes. Like that Hufflepuffs are unimportant. That's not true at all! And how all Slytherins are evil? Not true either! And everyone thinks Gryffindors are either super amazing and brave or full of themselves. Neither is true for me. But the Sorting Hat knows you better than you know yourself. It gives me chills just thinking about it." she finished. She had obviously wanted to share those thoughts with someone for a long time.
"Yeah, me too. I don't like the end of the year, I mean, I miss my mom and my younger siblings and stuff, but I don't want to leave here," Rose confided. "And yeah, we'll be right back here in two or three months. And, over the summer, I'm sure my mom would be fine if you came over sometime. For dinner or a sleepover or something. And we can always write," Rose suggested. She was a little tired of her siblings having their friends over and Rose being lonely all summer. Maybe Alina could help with that. Rose sure hoped so.

"Let's do that! The sleepover,"
Alina smiled widely, thinking it was the best idea! "Poplar is only just over an hour from Surrey and I could take the train in." Her father wouldn't mind. Her father probably wouldn't even known she was gone if she took a vacation for a month's time.

Okay, maybe within a month he'd notice. Or a hint of a notice.

She had already made plans to visit the coastal line over the summer as much as possible. "You could come to my place too if your mum allowed it. We've got lots of space. Loads of space." Too much space.

"Your father..." she wasn't wanting to offend Rose by asking but they were friends. Friends shared things with other friends and if she was so bold as to say something wrong, she trusted Rose would tell her to mind her own business on the subject. "Is he around?"

There could have been so many reasons why she didn't mention him. Maybe she didn't like the guy. Maybe she didn't know who he was. He could have been a dead beat who left or perhaps passed away. Maybe he was someone who was still around and abusive in some way

Rose smiled widely back at her friend when Alina said she wanted to do the sleepover. "Okay, then. I'll send you an owl during the summer sometime and we can arrange something. I'd love to come to your house, too. My mom would let me." Rose replied, feeling a little self-conscious about saying mom instead of mum, but pushing it down inside of her. "I don't take up much space anyway."
Alina asked her about her father curiously. She said it carefully, as if she didn't want to offend Rose or be too nosy.
Rose looked up at the sky, saying, "My father passed away when I was three. He was a muggle and a great man." she smiled a little. "And he was an introvert, had red, curly hair, green eyes, and freckles. I wasn't old enough to know him super well, but I have these little glimpses of memories of him."
Oh, crap it all. Her curiosity was too much to keep down.
"Not to be rude or nosy, but what about your mother? Is she around?" Rose asked carefully and hesitantly. She really didn't want to make Alina sad or offended, but they were friends. Rose had wanted to tell someone about her dad for a while, and maybe Alina needed to tell someone about her mom. If she ever did, Rose would be there for her.

Alina had been able to talk about it seldomly. If she didn't think too much on it and allow herself to feel the emotions behind it, she was okay. If she thought about it, things seemed to burst into flames around her. So she focused on her breathing, in....and out. Slowly in, and slowly out.

"She died. Died when I was seven," she said. She wouldn't go into the fact that it was Alina herself that found her dead in their grand foyer. "But again, even when she was with us I don't recall really any specific memories with her. Maybe a sporadic one here or there."

Bella and her just practically had to raise themselves with the assistance of the hired help. It had been a lonely sort of existence and maybe thats why she was so loud and overbearing sometimes when making friends. They were like the family she never had.

"What about this place?"
she spoke of Hogwarts, the students, the staff. "What do you think you'll miss most about this place during the summer months?" Alina herself looked back to the castle and tried to think about it, but it was one of those times where a bazillion ideas hit her at once and she wished she had her notebook to write them down in. Maybe she'd journal that later.

Rose was filled with a sense of rising panic as Alina's face seemed to turn sadder. She hadn't meant to bring back bad memories or anything. When Alina got it off her chest, Rose blinked.
'Seven? That's so young! Yet, Alina probably remembers all of it much clearer than I do. The funeral, the feelings of feeling lost and incomplete... The death itself,' Rose thought.
"I'm- I'm so sorry, Rose said gently. "That must have been really hard. I can only imagine."
Rose did not miss how Alina abrubtly changed the subject, asking about what she would miss most of this place.
"That's hard," Rose replied. "There are some pretty amazing people here... Like, the teachers are really good at their jobs and there are some people who have been pretty nice to me, like you. Well, you've been more than just pretty nice. But, anyway, I think what I would miss most would be... The feeling of having a friend. A real friend. That actually likes being with me and wants to be with me more. I never really get that at home. My siblings have friends over and then I'm just..." she shook her head. "I know,, that sounds sappy and stuff, but..." it was true.
"And you? What do you think you'll miss most?"

Alina listened to her friend talk and had another lemon drop from her bag and held the bag out to her in case she wanted one. She knew some liked them, some tolerated them, and some would rather pass on the lemon candy.

It was crazy how a place like Hogwarts brought together such a variety of individuals - different backgrounds, different cultures. Some were dancers, musicians, skilled at studies, or just liked to set out on adventures. It brought together people like Rose and Alina who's first encounter could have gone completely different. So many different people and yet the similarities existed as well. Rose would be going home feeling alone and Alina would be doing the very same.

"Definitely the people," she agreed. "It's rather lonely at home but you know, I'll have Bella and if you can come over for a sleepover, that'll give me something to look forward to. I'll miss you," she smiled because it was sappy but she didn't care. She was a bit of a sappy person. "And I'll miss Mer, my friend in Slytherin. In my house I'll miss Em and Phoenix...and Cliff...." she really didn't want to spend day after day of not seeing his face.

It was pretty interesting how there were so many different kinds of people here, including the professors. "Aw, I'll miss you, too..." Rose replied, smiling to herself.
When Alina offered her a lemon drop, she murmured, "Thank you," and gingerly took it from Alina, slipping it in her mouth. She liked lemon drops a tiny bit more than most, but she wasn't completely obsessed with them. And some lemon drop brands were either worse or better than others. Good thing the ones Alina had were really good, otherwise Rose probably would have a conundrum on her hands... Rose made a mental note to share candy with Alina if they ever did the sleepover.
Alina mentioned some of her other friends she would miss, and someone named Cliff. Rose didn't miss the look on her friend's face when she said his name. Rose arched an eyebrow, a mischievous look reaching ber eyes, Rose suppressed an evil smirk and prodded, "Cliff? Who's Cliff?"
Rose either expected Alina to say he was nobody, or that he was only a friend, or start blushing and tell her the truth. Either way, Rose had a feeling she knew what kind of a person Cliff was to Alina...

“He’s a...boy in my House,” she answered but she knew Rose asked in order to receive a more elaborate question that that. “He’s nothing short of amazing. He has warm brown eyes and an infectious smile. We were going to go to the Secret Blossom Ball together but instead decided to stay in the Common Room and have our own Secret Secret Blossom Ball. We’ve gone on adventures and played pranks and spent time in the Astronomy Tower at night to see the stars. You’d never know there were so many stars, Rose.”

Alina stopped because she knew she shared far too much about the boy to play it off that he was just a friend. She picked a blade of grass from the field where they sat and started to play with it, tying it into a knot.

“I might try to visit him come summer. After his football camp. His parents are too keen on the magic stuff and I just hope I can help convince them to allow him to come back. I’m just not sure I’m the right person for it. Not everyone takes too kindly to me.” But she felt hopefully she could be polite and she did generally want to meet the two that raised such a great son.

Rose smiled. Just a boy from her house. Sure.
"He sounds like a really nice guy," Rose observed. "He sounds like a muggle born, right? Anyway, I'm sure you'll be able to see him over the summer. Once his parents meet you and see how kind and sweet you are, I'm sure they'll have no problem having you over after the first time," Rose reassured Alina. "Though they may start to suspect something..."
Rose sometimes inwardly wished she had a love life. That she daydreamed about someone or that someone daydreamed about her. Sometimes she was glad she didn't have a love life yet. Though she would never tell anyone, she didn't think it was right to date when you were younger. It was more of a title before you get at least in your third year. Some people just dated for popularity, which wasn't fair to the people who really, actually liked them and dated them for that reason. Dating was messed up, and that was why she was waiting. But she didn't want her opinions to dampen Alina's spirits or weigh her down if she wanted to date this Cliff guy. Although she didn't always support her friend's decisions, she always supported her friends.
A little softly but lightheartedly, Rose added, "Just... just don't get your heart broken."
