xxxThey lied. They made a promise, and they broke it.
Skylar feels numb as her feet carry her along the gravel path. Her eyes stare ahead at nothing as she walks with no clear destination, reality fading into a distant hum behind her. Her hands were clenched tight by her side, a crumpled piece of paper trapped within her grasp.
They lied.
And to think she was having a nice morning. The day started off as usual with the chipper Gryffindor greeting her housemates and heading down for breakfast. She chatted with friends, had a few bites, and all was well. It was the same thing everyday. The same smile, the same laugh, the same jokes. Some may find it boring or uneventful, but Skylar finds her little routine to be quite peaceful. After all, she had friends. Friends were... hard to come by when she was younger, so she enjoys their company as long as she can.
Until she has to go back.
Summer looms over the blue-haired girl like an ominous threat. What an odd thing to say, Skylar! Summer is a great opportunity to spend time with the family, no? The cheery voice in her head says. A cheery voice that sounds suspiciously like her mother. Or on a deeper level, herself. But despite how much she tries to convince herself that summer is indeed a joyous occasion, something keeps nagging at the back of her mind.
Maybe it was the gates. The large oak doors. The silent statues. But something about her home just made her feel... trapped. She did not want to go back. She wanted to stay at Hogwarts. The liveliness of the castle made her feel more at home then her real one did. Now, now, mother did not raise you to be so selfish, did she?
Right. Because Skylar had a blessed childhood. She had loving parents, a wealthy mansion, and everything she had ever wanted. The only thing was that she could not go outside of the gates. It is for your protection. The world outside is dangerous and unpredictable. The voice chimes in her head again, echoing the words her parents have repeated one too many times.
And she should be grateful. Grateful that her parents went through all this effort to keep her safe and protected from the outside world. She was their precious daughter, and they would give her anything to make her happy. But not everything.
Because they lied.
When she was seven, little Skylar had finally had enough and asked the burning question. Why can I not go outside? Why can I not make friends like normal kids? When her parents heard her, they looked at her with such... sadness. Her mother even covered her mouth and cried in the other room. She made her mom cry.
Little Skylar was confused. She did not know what was wrong with her question, only that it hurt the ones she loved. So she never asked again. Her father later told her that this was all to protect her, and that there were less fortunate people out there who could not afford such a luxury. But, he told her that they understood her desire. So when she finally finishes her first year at Hogwarts, they would take her on a trip. Somewhere outside the glided gates of their estate.
And Skylar held onto the promise. Until they broke it.
She received the letter after breakfast. For the last few weeks, her parents have been making plans to take her to Greece. The young girl was ecstatic, especially with how much she loved Greek Mythology. So when she opened the letter, she had expected more details about the trip. What she got instead was an apology.
Due to recent developments, her parents had to cancel their plans. They say that they would explain everything, but Skylar had already stopped reading. They lied. She is never going to leave that house, is she?
So here she is, walking around aimlessly, wondering just how she had gotten here. She does not know whether to laugh, cry, or scream. So she walked and walked, until she was noticed.
