George unpacked his borrowed set of chess pieces onto an empty table in the study room, pulling the hefty wooden box from his bag and setting it down with a dull thud. It took up near the whole width of the table - which was perfect, as it provided easy viewing for both himself and his opponent. He set out the whole board, letting each piece test the weight of its weapon and enter a battle-ready stance. The knights yelled at him as he placed them down - he had switched their positions with the bishops - but once that was sorted, it was time to play. All he needed now was an adversary.

The two sets of pieces had been taken from the same box, as well. Unlike many players, who would only play with pieces that knew their habits, the owner of this set seemed to prefer familiar faces on both sides of the battle. It was an unusual sight. Both sides were seasoned veterans of this particular war, sneering at each other from across the checkered battlefield. Their experience would do them no good - they were under new masters, now, and the battle could go either way. That didn't stop pride from playing a part, however. Maybe the wisdom of his pieces would win him the battle, George hoped.

A few stray pieces of hard candy were rolled out at the edge of the table, still in their wrappers. It would be good to have something to munch during the game, and having them laid out there could entice someone to come and play with them. He couldn't think of anyone to invite that would actually like to play chess with him. Jack would find it boring, Jake would find it too difficult, but George found it to be one of the most fun activities at the school aside from gobstones and smashing stuff up before casting reparo on it.

Finally sitting down at his table, commanding the black side of the board, George began to wait. He made prolonged eye contact with any passers-by, hoping to entice them to come and play. He clacked a hard candy against his teeth, playing with it on his tongue. This wouldn't take too long, right? @Ezekiel Wasek

Ezekiel made his way through the study room, having no plans for that particular day he juts planned on spending it quietly in a corner catching up on his work. But as he made his way past George and his chess set and was immediately intrigued. He walked over to the Hufflepuff and stood by the table, looking over the board. He had played regular chess before with his father but had seen nothing like this before. "Do you need an opponent?" Ezekiel asked with a slight smile, gesturing towards the set on the table.

The pieces seemed to sneer at each other is a more friendly than angry way. They had probably been through this many times before, but Ezekiel wouldn't know that. His eyes shifted between the two sides and then back up to the Hufflepuff who was sitting across from him.

Half the Pawns seemed to look up towards Ezekiel, they seemed like they wanted to get this battle started already. While the others stay focused on the opponents across from them, their swords poised to strike them down. It was so intriguing, it made Ezekiel wonder if there was going to be anything different than regular chess than just the pieces. What rules were in effect with all of this.

Is there some way to post pieces updates, like a site online or something?

George crushed his candy between his teeth as Ezekiel approached, quickly swallowing down the chewed remains so he could speak properly. He wouldn't wnat to make a bad impression on a potential opponent. Especially not one in the green-accented robes of a Slytherin. If he could best one of them at chess, he would know he had a shot at making it big. He wasn't sure what it meant to make it big at wizard chess, of all things, as wizards seemed to care pretty much only about dueling, quidditch, and (much to George's surprise) office jobs. It seemed that most people who weren't out to hurt someone, beat them at sports, or work on their career were most often muggle-born and thus of little importance in the wizzosphere anyway.

"I'd love an opponent!" George said pleasantly, his troops letting out a rallying cry to show their agreement. George kicked out the chair opposite him to give Ezekiel a place to sit, smiling brightly at his opponent as he prepared for their battle of wits. He didn't care whether the other boy knew the rules or not, and he was in no place to explain them himself. The troops would protest any illegal moves, but that didn't mean that he had to heed their advice.

The Hufflepuff stood up from his seat and extended his hand to Ezekiel, leaning forward over the board as he did. "George Henry! Proud Hufflepuff and writer for the Hogwarts Headliner. I was on the front page last month, you know."

And humble, too.

If you want we can just roll it and play out the battle kind of abstractly, or we can represent the board with chess diagrams or something. Personally I'm not really interested in playing out move-by-move because that could take ages, but whatever's your preference!

Ezekiel grinned, taking a seat across from George after he kicks the chair out for him after of course shaking his hand. "Ezekiel Wasek, Slytherin. And I do remember seeing your name in the paper, never had a chance to read the article, however." As Ezekiel took a seat he picked up one of the pawns, looking it over as it seemed to grin, prepared for battle. Ezekiel nodded at the pawn and placed him back down into his position.

"Well Mr. Henry, are you ready to start?" He asked, his fingers waving over the pieces before making his first move. If he said he was ready he'd move one of his knights out to cause havoc before starting his main assault force, likely a rook and bishop combo covering each other and hopefully putting pressure on the king early on. The pieces seemed somewhat surprised at how little they needed to chime in to talk to Ezekiel, and they seemed a little more at ease than at the start.

"So how long have you been playing chess?" He asked, making some small talk between the alternating moves of each player. "I've been playing for a couple of years, but I haven't had an opponent for some time now so I might be a little rusty."

@George Henry We could just roll near the end to see who wins

George's smile brightened up right away as Ezekiel acknowledged his name in the paper. While it was a bit discouraging to hear someone would look at the paper and not read his article, the idea that people might recognize his name without even reading the paper was thrilling. He'd been impatient to earn a reputation at Hogwarts - a good reputation, of course, not the one he'd been cultivating all on his own. Being a troublemaker was exciting, but he would much rather be a name that people listened to. "You should when you get the chance! It's pretty good, if I do say so myself. Bit unfair for me to say, though, seeing as I wrote it and all."

George leaned back in his seat, taking stock of the board and giving Ezekiel a nod to signal his readiness. The Slytherin made the first move, and the Hufflepuff followed up - mirroring him for the first few before diverging to defend himself. He went to make a hasty move, only to be stopped by the sound of his king shouting at him.

"No! You ignorant child! You'll send them to their deaths!" the king shouted, his voice quiet despite his fury, as he was only a chess piece. George still blushed red around his ears, embarrassed by the little figurine as it shouted at him. He paused a moment before making a different move.

"Sorry," he murmured to the piece, looking up across at Ezekiel during the Slytherin's turn. "I've never really played much, actually. My dad taught me a long time ago, but I thought it was a bit boring. Wanted to try again since there are a lot more people to play with around here. Nice to be up against someone who isn't my dad or my brother."

He paused, stroking his chin as he examined the board again. "What about you?" he wondered idly.
