Wrong Letter

The Owlery was quieter than usual.

Elara stood near one of the open windows, the cool afternoon breeze stirring the ends of her dark hair as she waited. The letter from home should have arrived by now. Not that she was particularly eager to read another update about how brilliantly Clara, her older sister, was doing or how Theo, her older brother, was just having the time of his life ggetting burned to a crisp by a dragon.

A sharp flutter of wings broke the silence.

A tired looking owl swooped down and landed on the railing beside her. Without hesitation, it dropped a sealed envelope into her hands before taking off again.

Elara frowned.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

She turned the envelope over once, then twice. It definitely wasn't addressed to Elara Hawthorne.

"...Careless."

She let out a quiet sigh and glanced around the Owlery. No one seemed to be searching for a missing letter, but someone eventually would...right?

For a brief moment, she considered leaving it where it was.

Instead, she slipped the unopened envelope between the pages of the book she had been carrying and leaned against the stone wall to wait.

If the owner came looking for it, they could explain how an owl managed to deliver a letter to the wrong person.

If not...

Well, perhaps she would have to find them herself.
