A New Discovery
Finally with some time off between her first few classes at Hogwarts, Alexa found herself wandering the halls. She had been told that there was a library, somewhere around here… And behold! Just ahead of her was a set of double wooden doors, majestic looking, closed and imperious. She walked up to them and hesitated. Was this the place?
With a squeaking and creaking of hinges and old wood, Alexa slowly pushed the door open, poking her head around to peer inside. She gasped in astonishment. This was indeed the library; it had to be, because she had never seen another room so full of books! The shelves were PACKED, looking as though another book could hardly be squeezed in them in any place. As she stepped inside, she glanced down the nearest line of shelves, seeing books of all colors, all shapes and sizes, some dusty with age, some worn with use. This was an incredible place!
She slowly headed down the aisle and settled herself at a table dedicated for studying students. It was empty at the moment. She pulled out her used copy of Hogwarts, A History, and opened it to the beginning. With the speed of how everything moved at the beginning of her time at Hogwarts, she had had no chance to do reading for herself. So now she buried her head in the book, her red hair falling forward, fascinated. Idly, a small part of her mind wondered if anyone else was inside the library.

I hope you don't mind me joining
She had been too fascinated with the library not to get back in here again. Despite the willies it gave her, what with all the long often times dark corridors and looming shelves, one might think it could topple over on anyone. But there was also that other-worldly feeling of not being alone (she actually feels this about anywhere with books in it, most especially libraries). Not because students do actually visit the library (it was really common to see a bunch of students with their noses on a book here), it was that the books in themselves felt like friends to Mystery Anne. A story waiting to be heard (or read).
She'd finished her readings for their assigned topic for two subjects. She has yet to start on the others. Just thinking about it made her heart sink a little. The feeling of enchantment of the library in her heart dispersing and disappearing like a fog at dawn giving way to a warm sunny day. She had thought she would enjoy reading everything about magic. But being forced to read through them, and there was a lot of reading to be done, it became a chore.
I just need a little break, Mystery Anne thought to herself. She scanned through the books on the shelves going from end to end. She'd scan through books and return mostly all of it. She finally decided on a book, a compilation of short stories. She'd had the book of The Tales of Beetle the Bard gifted to her by her mother's sister and thought maybe this would be better. She enjoyed the stories in it and since she's just passing her time until she could face her textbooks once again, she thought it was the perfect choice.
She turned a few corners and found another student. She looked young enough to be a first year. She didn't want to disturb her so she quietly sat on her chosen seat.

Not at all! I appreciate the company! :-)
Buried in her book, Alexa heard a chair squeak quietly against the floor as someone moved it back from the table, and then it creaked as the person sat down. Keeping her head down, Alexa looked up with only her eyes to see who had sat near her. A brown-haired girl, who looked to be about her age – possibly from her year – was sitting nearby reading a book of what looked to be a collection of tales. Her interest piqued, and she raised her head to look at the other girl.
From her angle, Alexa couldn't quite see the title of the book the other girl was reading, but was intensely curious. Normally quite shy, her curiosity spurred her on to speak. "What's that you're reading?" She asked quietly, but with a small smile. Then she blushed in embarrassment, realizing she had once again forgotten to introduce herself. "I-I'm sorry. I am Alexa. Mackenzie." She tacked on her last name as an afterthought. "I hope I'm not disturbing you," she added quietly, glancing back down at her book, blushing from the roots of her hair to her chin.

What's that you're reading?
Mystery Anne looked up at the other student with a start. She kinda gets a little too engrossed into a book despite it being opened just on the first page. It was her overactive imagination, her Mom would usually say. She smiled awkwardly raising the book to show the front cover that with a title "A Series of Unfortunate Fairy Tales". It had interesting stories about princesses not wanting to be saved and princes getting lost in the woods because they forgot the map. It seemed a good place to jump into and it was the thinnest book she could find that would perfectly fit with her schedule.
Alexa Mackenzie. She might have heard her name during the Sorting Ceremony. She just forgot it belonged to the girl. Or was it the other way around, Mystery Ann wondered.
"My name is Mystery Anne Abbot." She smiled amiably and proffered a hand towards Alexa. "Pleasure to meet you!" She then noticed the book she was reading. She could not help scrunching up her nose. "Reading up, huh? Maybe I'm disturbing you?" Why was she always making a nuisance, she asked herself. "If I was disturbing you, its okay to tell me." Mom had always reminded her that sometimes people are not as vocal as she is. Sometimes, they need to know that its okay for them to be honest. And Mystery Anne thought Alexa seemed a little bit shy, though, to her credit, Alexa was the one that started the conversation.

The curly-haired girl looked up at Alexa in surprise, and Alexa hoped she hadn’t disturbed the girl. Then the other girl smiled uncertainly and showed Alexa of the cover of the book she was reading. A Series of Unfortunate Fairy Tales. It made Alexa smile. The title reminded her greatly of a series she had read in the non-magical world when she was younger: A Series of Unfortunate Events. She wondered if the books were at all similar.
The girl introduced herself as Mystery Anne Abbott. Her first name is Mystery! Alexa thought that was one of the coolest names she had ever heard. It made her nervous, but she decided to say so: “Your name is really cool,” she said with a smile, taking the offered hand and shaking it slightly before releasing it. “It’s nice to meet you, too,” she added.
Alexa raised her eyebrows when Mystery Anne asked about disturbing her reading. “Not at all!” Alexa said quickly. “I was just doing a bit of reading for myself, instead of for class, for once,” she chuckled lightly. “What House are you in? I am a First Year, in Hufflepuff,” she said.

"My name is weird!" shrugged Mystery Anne grinning. She might have turned a little pink at the unexpected complement. Nobody had told her her name was cool, so far. The last person who told her that was her muggle friend. Everyone else just thought it was weird asking why she was named as such. Her cousins certainly made fun of it. Not that she hated her name for it. No. She liked her name well enough but didn't really thought it a big deal. "I like your name too," she said meaning it. She was taught by Mom that when a complement is given, you should give it back. But you must mean it.
"First year Gryffindor," said Mystery Anne in answer when asked from what house she was in. She had become a bit proud of her house despite the surprise and uncertainty she felt the moment the Sorting Hat had shouted it. She never considered Gryffindor as a possible house she would be placed in. Ravenclaw was her first pick. Slytherin and Hufflepuff were her second option because it was her parents' house. Frankly, she thought her house was intimidating hence she never thought about it.
"Oh, my Dad's a Hufflepuff!" she said excitedly and a little too loud. She thought they were just the sweetest people. Her Dad was definitely the sweetest. Though her Mom had her own soft moments, it was always Dad who knew how to stop the tears or to make a blue day turn into a yellow bright day. She looked around guiltily. "Sorry," she whispered to no one in particular. She giggled as quietly as possible and tried trapping the sound by covering her mouth with her hands. But still a few giggles escaped.
"You know, I thought I was going to place either Hufflepuff or Slytherin. They're my parents' houses. So, you know." Mystery shrugged. "How about you? Was Hufflepuff really your first choice? What was your parents'?" Her eyes widened as it always does when she wanted to hear an interesting story.

(Sorry for the delay!)
Mystery Anne said that her name was weird, and Alexa shook her head vigorously. “No it’s not! I really like it.” When the other girl complimented Alexa’s name, Alexa turned pink and stuttered out “Th-thank you,” quietly, looking away a little bit but also smiling with pleasure at the compliment.
When the other girl said that she was a first year Gryffindor, Alexa smiled and wondered if she knew her friend Clay. But she would ask that later, perhaps. “And do you like your new House? Have you made some friends?” She was thinking about her own experience, and how she was slow to make friends, but was managing to do so a little bit by little bit. Maybe Mystery Anne could be a friend!
When Alexa told her what House she was in, Mystery Anne exclaimed that her dad was from the same house. Alexa startled slightly at the outspoken cry, but then smiled. This girl seemed very energetic, and Alexa liked that about her. Then she apologized for her outburst and giggled, trying to cover it. It made Alexa giggle too.
When Mystery Anne mentioned her parents’ houses, Alexa looked down. As a Muggle-born, her parents obviously didn’t come from any Hogwarts Houses. Then the other girl asked if Hufflepuff was really her first choice, and what her parents’ Houses were. Looking at her book, Alexa picked idly at the corner of the cover while she answered, not making eye contact. “Um, my parents didn’t go here. They’re not magical.” She looked up and met the other girl’s eyes. “I’m a Muggle-born.” She didn’t know if she should feel ashamed or not, but she definitely felt uncomfortable. No! She was not ashamed of where she had come from. But she understood that some witches and wizards judge you based on your background. She hoped Mystery Anne wasn’t one of those people…

“And do you like your new House? Have you made some friends?”
Mystery Anne Scrunched her nose and smiled sheepishly. "I mean, they're all very intimidating. Not that I'm not, like, talking to them or anything. Its just that, I don't even know how to talk to them. Am I confusing you? And don't know. My mom said I'm not shy. I am her daughter after all." She laughed a little at remembering her parents. She sighed she'd never really been good at conversations. They all think she was weird, just like her name. At least, that's what she thinks. But she does make an effort.
“Um, my parents didn’t go here. They’re not magical.”
“I’m a Muggle-born.”
Her eyes light up even more and her smiled widened. "Me too! I mean, no, I'm not but I could be a muggle for all the time I've lived there which is basically all my life until now," she told her excitedly. "Finally! Someone I could relate to." She was a little excited and she had not known anyone who was muggle born. So she never knew really the difference between her and @Alexa Mackenzie . "Though, this must be more weird to you. Oh my! What did your parents think when you first, you know, do magic!" But she is pretty curious as she is always when seeing or discovering something new. "It must have been crazy!"

Mystery Anne began talking about her House mates, and Alexa nodded in understanding. It was intimidating talking to new people! She really didn’t know how to talk to people, either, so she understood the other girl completely, and made sure to say so. “No, you’re not confusing me at all. I actually feel… Similarly sometimes. People can be hard to talk to.”
When the other girl said that she was Muggle-born as well but then corrected herself, Alexa was slightly confused. Didn’t she just say her parents went to Hogwarts? But then she mentioned how she had basically lived near Muggles for most of her life and Alexa understood. It was a little bit different, though, she thought. Mystery Anne’s family was still magical, whereas hers was not.
The other girl asked about what it must’ve been like for her family when she did magic. “Well, I’m not sure entirely, but the first time I did magic on accident my teachers just blew it off, so my parents didn’t think anything of it. The second time, I know for sure that I accidentally blew up the turkey we were having for dinner. I just know I did it, somehow. But they didn’t think so, and I didn’t change their minds about it. When my letter came, a Ministry wizard came and explained things and showed some magic. They were flabbergasted.” She remembered that shocked looks on her parents' faces when the wizard had levitated their cups toward them, full of tea. They had thought the letter was a hoax, at first, but by that point they were starting to believe.
"When did you first do magic?"

"That's so cool! Blowing up stuff! And very dangerous!" She was amazed and scared. She knew, from her parents, that it was not allowed or some such thing. She wasn't entirely sure.
Well, one thing she is sure. She was lucky enough not to have performed magic in front of muggles. That was one of the major rules in the house. And she didn't want to know the consequences if she dared to do it. The punishment for violating normal rules were hard enough. They would probably take away my books, then, she thought to herself. She wouldn't like that. But then, she remembered the little accidents. But that wasn't her fault. She was a kid then and she didn't know what she was doing.
"I cracked the tv screen that one time," she said proudly. Not that she actually remembered doing it. She was probably two or three at the time. It was unusually early for magic to manifest, but she was in extreme pain then. And it didn't happen again. Her mother had been excited about it telling everyone of her magical feat at such a very young. Though, as she grew up it didn't really amount to any. She was as normal as any young witch was. But she was happy with the memory and she liked seeing the pride in her mother's eyes when she talked about it. "It was lame. But I was really young."
"Anyway, how did your parents take it? I don't know what I would've done then. I mean, if I tell Ms. Smiths, our neighbor back in London, that magic were real, I bet she'd have a heart attack. And how did you know not to do it again? I myself didn't know how. I just didn't do it."
