Location: Main Street, a small magical village near his family's home

Winter break had officially begun.

Which meant Caspian Whitlock was free.

The eleven-year-old strolled down the snow-covered street with his hands shoved into the pockets of his coat. His birthday was coming soon. Many pureblood families would be coming over but this time he didn't really felt happy.

Maybe because in Ilvermony he saw people having friends and how different they were from his 'friends'.

The village was crowded with witches and wizards preparing for Christmas.
Caspian wasn't shopping. That would've required having a plan. Instead, he was wandering.
His pale eyes scanned the busy street, occasionally recognizing old pureblood family names on shop signs and advertisements.

Home was certainly different from school. Better, in some ways.
People actually knew who the Whitlocks were around here.

As they should.

A smirk tugged at his lips.

His attention had been focused entirely on something in a shop when he walked directly into somebody.

"Woah!"

The collision nearly sent both of them sprawling into the snow.

Instinctively, Caspian shot a hand out, catching the girl by the waist before she could hit the ground.

For a second, everything froze. Then Caspian blinked.

Looked at her. Looked at the position they'd ended up in. And grinned.

"Well,"

His grey eyes sparkled with amusement.

"Hello to you too."

Still holding onto her, he tilted his head.

"Though I have to admit, dramatically throwing yourself into my arms is a pretty memorable introduction."

He stepped back holding her hand and gently kissing the back of it;

"Caspian Whitlock and you might be?"

A smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.

She didn't know what she was doing, where she was, and if she even deserved to be alive. God, why were things always so unpredictable? She was rejoicing one moment, and the next completely heartbroken and not ready to move on. And... she wasn't sure if she could continue like this, where she was. People just wanted to find a way to hurt her, and she would let them in, not thinking of what the result would be. Rookie mistake, she hadn't learnt how the world operates just yet. Why did it ALWAYS have to end in tragedy and trauma?

It was always the damn bloodline not letting her do what she wanted, not letting her explore the world like a normal independent woman who wanted to find her calling. But no, apparently, there were so many factors that stopped her from it, she had admittedly lost count. Her age, her family name, her gender of all things, and... she couldn't recall any more.

And then, people would want to rip away the one thing that kept her sane. Music, in whichever form. Just hearing it would do something to her. Other girls needed a man; she needed a guitar to fulfill her dreams. Yet her parents still had the desire to talk about "the public" and how their family would lose "their dignity". She didn't really have the courage to tell them that NO ONE FREAKING CARES, and everyone's busy with their own lives.

And today, she had...maybe broken a bone or two. There was a stray cat who had fallen down the family's well, which was there just for them to show-off their pureblood status. Stupid? Yes. Could she do anything about it? No.
As she had reached in, the stone she was stepping on for support gave way, and she slipped headfirst into the well, which had enough sharp edges and cobblestones which fell on her head as she slipped to the bottom.
Yet she couldn't talk; her eyes were welling up with tears as she was the blood on her hands, her forehead, and her waist, knowing that the injury on the waist would scar. All this just for a cat. She held him or her to her chest and lowered herself down with extra precaution. She really needed a break.
She walked out, her eyes still red, her hair getting everywhere because of the harsh winter wind. She was walking around mindlessly, not aware of where she was going for 45 minutes.
She was thinking about what just happened, and how her family would react to it, and-
BAM.
She walked into somebody; she was so lost in her thoughts.
She was about to fall, AGAIN, when that somebody caught hold of her waist.
If there was one thing she hated it was that, and she winced as he did so because of how she had gotten hurt there.
As he kissed the back of her hand, she straightened up-
And punched him in the gut. No remorse.
"Half angelic, half demonic, Briar Anderson, you?"

The punch landed.
Hard.
Caspian doubled over slightly, one hand immediately clutching his stomach.

Then he straightened his posture as though nothing had happened at all.
Years of etiquette lessons had taught him many things.
One of them was never letting people see when they'd actually managed to hurt you.
His grey eyes settled on her calmly.
A small smile remained fixed on his face.
"Charming."

The word was delivered with effortless politeness.
"Most people settle for a handshake."

"'Half angelic, half demonic' seems a bit generous after assaulting a complete stranger."
His gaze lingered on her.

And then the amusement faded.
Because now that he was actually looking, he noticed things.
The blood on her hands.
The cut on her forehead.
The way she had winced when he'd caught her waist.
The tears she seemed determined not to let fall.
Most people would've asked if she was alright.
Caspian wasn't most people.
Nor had he ever been taught how to ask questions like that.
Instead, he tilted his head.
"Tell me, Anderson."
His voice was lighter than his eyes.
"Do you normally wander into people and punch them?"

There was a teasing edge to his words, but not a cruel one. The sort designed to distract rather than mock.
For a second he considered leaving.
A sensible decision. A Whitlock decision. Instead, he sighed dramatically.

He reached into his coat pocket and produced a pristine white handkerchief embroidered with a silver W.
Holding it out toward her, he raised an eyebrow.
"For the blood."
His expression shifted back into something dangerously close to a smirk.
"Try not to punch me with this hand as well. I am beginning to take it personally."

She
bit her lip to control her anger as he straightened up after the punch like nothing happened.
"UGHHH I HATE YOU!" She yelled, the ground basically quaking under her feet at this point.
She didn't know why this was happening, and why it all had to happen today...she was extremely ill-fated.
"I don't do handshakes." She murmured, hands folded to her chest, all while avoiding his piercing gaze. She was far stronger, who did this person think she was?
Also, she couldn't just "run to daddy" like all those other girls, she fought her own battles. Like a woman. Men are useless, that was what she had learnt so far in her eleven years of living.
As he made his comment on her apparently 'assaulting' random people, she gave him a death stare and replied, "No. You seem to be a special case. Whatever you are, leave me alone and go back to where you came from, understand?"
As she registered all that she said, she took a deep breath- and a tear finally fell.
"I-I'm sorry if I come across as rude. Just don't take it personally. I'm not feeling myself today. And shut up, or you get a punch and a kick."
She took the handkerchief, and returned it.
"I don't want to spoil the white it's so clear! Keep it, it's ok, the blood's dried anyways. And I don't care so..."
She leaned against the railing, it was almost sunset.

The outburst earned nothing more than a blink from Caspian.
His expression remained perfectly composed despite the fact that she had just declared her hatred loudly enough for half the village to hear.
"That's unfortunate." He folded his arms.
"I was only beginning to enjoy our conversation."

The death stare she sent him would've probably scared a sensible person.
Caspian wasn't a sensible person.
"If I leave, who exactly are you planning to yell at next?" he asked mildly. "The railing?"

His eyes flicked toward the tear that finally escaped.
And for the first time since they'd collided, he stopped smiling.
Then came the apology. Followed immediately by a threat. Caspian stared at her for a moment before letting out a short laugh.
"Remarkable."

When she handed the handkerchief back, he didn't take it.
Instead he simply looked at it, then at her.
"Keep it. I wasn't asking."
His tone left very little room for argument.

He focused at her and gathered this much that she had tried to protect the cat in her arms from something. It didnt look like she tripped or anything. Oh how he hated helping others and then getting hurt himself. He would know, he grew a heart once to do the same and now he pays the price every single full moon.

Then, unexpectedly, he looked away.
"I knew someone once who got hurt doing something stupid."
The words left his mouth before he could stop them.
"They thought they were helping." His voice remained light, but there was something underneath it now. "They paid for it afterwards."
Caspian's fingers tightened briefly against the railing.

Not enough for most people to notice. Enough for him. His grey eyes returned to Briar. "So tell me."

The familiar smirk finally returned, though it was smaller than before.
"Was it at least worth it?" His gaze flicked downward. "Whatever it was that earned you the injuries."

She
folded her arms to her chest, and smirked.
"Oh yeah? I was honestly looking forward to ending it, it's sad that I've been denied that pleasure..."
She glared at him, his attitude driving her insane. Why couldn't he just act like a normal person? Why did he have to insult her the one day she needed comfort? God, she hated all men in particular.
"Honestly, the railing is a far better conversation partner than you. You should really ask it for tips on how to be respectful!"
She rolled her eyes and took the handkerchief, wiping the blood that hadn't dried up yet. This would definitely get noticed by her parents, they would think she was sneaking out. Well, she was, but not in the sense they thought she was. Of course, it would take far more than a century for them to actually believe her, she had to be practical.
As he talked about the someone getting hurt, her eyes widened in concern,
"Who? Are they mostly fine now? What happened?"
This always happened to the people who least deserved it at that. Life was so unpredictable, so crazy... it didn't always lead to sunshine.
"I don't really know....maybe? I did save her or him," she gestured to the cat. "But they can't understand what's going on, so I can't really hold them into accountability for what happened to me."
She should get going....wait a minute. Where was she? She was just walking...where had she reached? Great, she was lost. SUCH a brilliant day.
She smiled sheepishly. "Also um...where exactly am I?"
