Speech -- Thoughts

The sound would render Pam's ears largely decorative.

Which was rude, really. She'd had them for years. And although she wouldn't quite mind, it would probably be a teeny bit inconvenient.

Water seemed to be everywhere. Sheets pelted down in all their glory, beating powerfully against the stone walls of the castle, pouring with an enthusiasm Pam had to admire. Trees swayed beneath the relentless assault, branches drooping by sheer force of weight.

Pam had found herself watching through the windows for all-in-all three minutes before she had made up her mind.

In hindsight, stepping into a rainstorm was probably not the best decision of the day.

Hindsight had arrived too late to stop her.

Everyone else, to no-one's surprise, had retired to the safety of their common rooms and dorms. People probably were not often filled by a desire to get washed away by water.

Yeah, probably not.

Not to mention the rain had claimed ownership over the Hogwarts grounds real quick. Very few people would want to go out in weather capable of folding large trees in half by sheer force of will. People took it as a warning.

Pam had taken it as an invitation.

The first thing she came to learn was that the rain was significantly colder than it looked.

Freezing sheets of water slammed into her in seconds, pushing her against the large doors behind her, sharp, cutting, almost painful, seeping through her robes and into her shoes. She wrapped her arms around herself in an attempt to seek some warmth, shoulders hunching instinctively.

That will take forever to dry.

It took her only a few minutes to adjust to the cold and she stared at the nearest tree for a moment.

Then, quite sensibly, stepped further into the rain.

Pam grinned.

The storm responded by sending a sharp gust of wind at her, making her stumble.

Alright I do not have good core strength. Calm down a little, I'm a friend dude.

The grounds were transformed, Pam noted, peering through the haze as far into the distance as the rain would allow. Her surroundings had been turned grey by the rainwater and blurred into silhouettes against the downpour. It wasn't completely dark yet, and she could occasionally see bouts of wind blowing water droplets across in front of her.

It was truly fascinating to watch.

She turned her head up, hand shielding her eyes as she looked— or attempted to look— up at the sky. It proved pretty futile, for all she managed to see was columns and columns of water.

Ow, ow that hurts— she turned her face away sharply as the force of the water became too much, rubbing her hand on her nose in an attempt to soothe the sting.

She tilted her head at a large puddle near her feet, surface rippling under the water droplets overhead.

She stepped into it, cold seeping through her shoes at once.

Brilliant.

She splashed directly through the puddle, water erupting around her ankles.

She giggled, immediately aiming for a larger one.

The grounds suddenly felt like a giant playground. Pam knelt, dipping her hand into a tiny stream that had been rushing through the ground, weaving around grass and stone. The water split around her hand.

She laughed. Loudly, carelessly.

And got a surprisingly aggressive amount of water up her nose.

The storm roared around her, drowning out every other sound in existence, reducing the world into rain and wind and movement.

Water.

And if Pam just so happened to spin around beneath the downpour with her arms spread wide...

Well, nobody was around to witness it.

Stelle had always suspected that rain had a personality of its own. Not a particularly pleasant one, either. The fine rain was a nosy old woman who slipped under doors uninvited, perhaps that's why it reminded her of her grandmother. The autumn drizzle was a melancholy poet incapable of finishing a sentence, as if she were a father. And storms like this one were, without a doubt, army generals who enjoyed terrorizing the world to remind everyone who was in charge. That afternoon, the general seemed especially inspired. From one of the castle windows, she watched the water pour from the sky with such force that it seemed as if someone had decided to empty an entire ocean over Hogwarts, hoping her curls wouldn't get frizzy from the dampness after having made the ill-advised decision to style them that morning. Most of the students had reacted sensibly, that is to say, by hiding. The common rooms were packed: sofas occupied, fireside corners turned into contested territories with the usual intensity of teenagers who had nothing better to do.

Stelle had tried to participate. She really had. She'd read three pages of a book, then the same three pages twice, then spent ten minutes staring out the window. Finally, she'd concluded that sitting still was considerably harder than any exam. That's why she was wandering the corridors when something caught her eye. A small, drenched figure, running across the grounds in a downpour that would probably have convinced far smarter people to stay indoors. Stelle squinted, watched for a few seconds, and then smiled. Because she knew exactly one person who might think that was a good idea.

"Oh, no," she muttered to herself.

The smile widened. She didn't bother to think about it too much; the best decisions in her life rarely began with reflection. Five minutes later, she was hurtling down the main staircase. Other students watched her go by; some looked confused, one even tried to ask her where she was going. But the question was forgotten as soon as Stelle burst through the castle's enormous gates.
The storm immediately greeted her. The wind buffeted her with enough force to knock her half a step back. Water poured down on her in quantities that seemed downright unnecessary. Her hair began to stick to her face, and her robes absorbed moisture with admirable speed. Even so, she started to laugh because it was impossible not to. It was magnificent. The rain roared, the trees bent, the puddles had become small lakes. The whole world seemed to have forgotten how to behave; if her grandmother saw her, she'd be beside herself. And in the midst of all that chaos, she found Pamela. Naturally, she was splashing around. Stelle watched for a moment as she waded through a huge puddle with the same carefree joy of a five-year-old who had just discovered that water splashed. It made her laugh even harder.

“Pamela Graham!” she shouted.

The storm decided to swallow about half the words.

“You’re completely crazy!”

It wasn’t an accusation, it was a greeting. The wind tore golden strands of hair in all directions, and Stelle trudged through the soaked grass to catch up with her.

“I’ve been trying to decide whether to admire you or tell the teachers for ten minutes!”

Another gush of rain hit her face. She closed her eyes. She coughed. And received an offensive amount of water up her nose.

“There should definitely be rules against this!” she protested.

The storm responded by throwing more water at her; it clearly didn’t respect authority. For a few seconds, she stood there, breathing heavily and watching the spectacle. The gray sky, the endless rain, the trees swaying in the wind, and Pam spinning through it all as if she’d been personally invited by the storm. Stelle understood then something she’d always suspected. Most people were observing nature, but Pamela seemed to be conversing with it, and perhaps that's why it was so easy to befriend her. Because the whole world seemed interesting to her; even when it was trying to drown her.

"You know what?" she finally shouted.

Pam probably only heard one syllable out of every three.

"I think this is the worst idea I've had all month!"

She took one step after another toward a puddle. The icy water immediately soaked through her shoes, making her shiver.

"And that really bothers me because now I have to join in! But you will take care of my curls later!"

With the dignity that only someone who has just willingly relinquished any semblance of sanity can possess, she ran toward the nearest puddle and she jumped. The water exploded around her legs, boisterous and perfect. Her laughter mingled with the roar of the wind. For a few moments, she forgot about homework, classes, exams, and any worries that might have existed. There was only the rain, the absurd freedom of doing something unnecessary, and a friend just as ridiculous as she was. Perhaps the adults would have said they were wasting time. Perhaps the teachers would have sent them straight back to the castle. Surely they would both end up with a cold the next day. But that was a problem for the future.[/color]

Pam found her mind drifting as she played around under the rain. She reached a finger up, poking at a leaf hanging off an overhead branch. The glossy blade separated immediately, falling for less than a millisecond before the wind swept it up, and away. Pam felt a pang of guilt.

Oh dear, it was more delicate than I realized.

She glanced in the direction the leaf had disappeared, hand shielding her eyes as she stared back at the Hogwarts castle, in the general direction of what she assumed was the Astronomy Tower. She wasn't quite sure, it could've been wrong. The rain had nullified whatever little sense of direction Pam normally possessed. Which was not a lot to begin with.

A thought surfaced rapidly in her mind. What would the Astronomy Tower look like if I went up there now? The Astronomy Tower was one of her favorite places in the castle, and after the Library, she'd probably spent the most time up there. She imagined the glass dome, transparent and sparkling normally. It would probably be covered with water. She could lie down on the ground and stare up at the rain, watch it fall on her. Pam guessed it would appear the same as it would if she looked up now—

"Oops, sorry—" she rubbed her eyes, blinking rapidly in an attempt to ease the sting of water.

A shout reached her through the downpour.

Or at least she assumed it was a shout.

The storm had been making increasingly questionable decisions regarding sound quality.

Pam blinked rainwater out of her eyes and turned, squinting into the distance. A figure emerged from the grey haze.

For one absurd moment, she wondered if the storm had manifested a person. Is that a teacher already?! I've barely been here five minutes—

But no. Pam blinked. Then blinked again. Then wondered whether the storm had grown attached and was now playing a practical joke on her.

The figure continued moving.

Fast.

Which seemed like a questionable decision. Visibility was terrible and the grounds were currently composed of approximately sixty percent puddles.

But wait— why was that hair familiar—?

...

Is that Stelle?

"STELLE?!"

Pam blinked. Then blinked again.

Nope.

Still Stelle.

Still running through a thunderstorm.

More water knocked the disbelief right out of her. Pam let out a gleeful laugh, "I can't hear you!" she called out, attempting to get closer to the girl as she jumped through puddles with a kind of childish joy she didn't think someone like Stelle could possess at the sight of rain.

Stelle, who somehow managed to look put together even after an entire day of classes.

Stelle, who paid attention to things like curls and ribbons and appearances.

Stelle, who absolutely knew what rain did to hair.

"Would I be too full of myself if I assume you've come to join me?!" Pam demanded, catching the girl's arm with a grin.

Pam's question barely survived the storm. It reached Stelle fragmented by the wind, mixed with the steady patter of the rain and the distant roar of the sky. However, it wasn't necessary to hear it all to understand. The smile on Pamela's face already contained half the answer, making Stelle burst out laughing. A genuine, carefree laugh, completely unbecoming of a young lady according to at least three generations of women in her family.

"Yes!" she shouted over the wind. "It would be terribly conceited if it weren't true!" The rain chose that moment to hurl an offensive amount of water directly at her face. She closed her eyes, coughed, and for a second demonstrated the possibility that storms could be sentient beings capable of holding a grudge. It wasn't a particularly reasonable theory, but then again, neither was much of magic. When she opened her eyes again, she found Pam holding her arm as they both stood soaked in the middle of the Hogwarts grounds, as if it were the most natural place in the world to be.

Perhaps it was, or at least for now. Because there were moments that seemed to escape the normal rules of life. Absurd moments, small acts of rebellion against reason, those instants when one decided to ignore what one should be doing in order to do exactly what one wanted. And this felt like one of them.

"I thought you were probably going to die." She paused dramatically.

"Or worse: I thought you were going to have fun without me." This seemed like a much more immediate tragedy. The storm raged again. The wind whipped her ponytail around, completely destroying any effort she'd made that morning to keep her hair presentable. Stelle ran a hand through her hair and tried to fix it, failing spectacularly.

"This is awful. My grandmother is going to feel this disaster from miles away." She said the phrase with a smile. It was a theory she'd held since childhood. Andromeda possessed an almost supernatural ability to detect less-than-elegant behavior even when she wasn't around; especially when she wasn't around.

"She probably just got up from her armchair without knowing why." She glanced toward the castle; the windows shimmered through the rain like tiny golden patches suspended in the distance. Everything seemed far away, blurred. As if the storm had temporarily split the world in two: the world of sensible people and theirs. Stelle decided she preferred the latter without a doubt. She looked down at an impromptu stream that wound through the lawn. The water moved swiftly among the stones, forming small, silvery eddies. That smile was dangerous; it was exactly the same smile that appeared whenever she was about to have a questionable idea.

"You know what the best thing about the rain is?" She didn't expect an answer. She never expected answers when she was excited.

"That it turns everything into an adventure." She pointed to the grounds. What was normally a path now resembled a river. The gardens had transformed into an archipelago of puddles. The small slopes looked like mountains. And makeshift streams crisscrossed the grounds like shimmering serpents.

"It's as if Hogwarts decided to become another place for a few hours." She liked the idea. Because Stelle had always suspected that places had moods, too. The castle on a sunny day wasn't the same castle during a storm, or the library at dawn wasn't the same library at dusk. And this rain-soaked Hogwarts seemed to hold different secrets. Perhaps wilder, more fun ones.

A clap of thunder ripped across the sky. The sound was so loud it vibrated in the air. For a moment, the whole world seemed to hold its breath, and then the rain fell even harder. Stelle lifted her face. The drops struck her forehead, her cheeks, and her eyelashes: cold, countless, and perfect.

She thought of her parents, her grandparents. Every time she'd heard the adults talk about the importance of growing up, behaving properly, and becoming a responsible young woman, she thought, "Maybe someday I'll be a graceful, sensible adult who won't drive my grandmother crazy." But not today. Today she was busy being a child in the rain, and she had every right to be. Honestly, it seemed like a much more interesting occupation.

She looked at Pam again, watching her with the wind in her face, the heavy rain on her head, and that joy that was impossible to fake. And she understood something. While most people waited for special occasions to feel happy, Pam was different; she could find happiness in a storm capable of uprooting trees.Stelle deeply admired that, because the world was full of people who looked for reasons to stay indoors and very few who found reasons to run out in the rain.

“You know what I think?” she finally said.

Her voice was softer now, though the wind still tried to steal it away.

“I think that in twenty years I won’t remember any of the afternoons I spent sitting around doing homework. But I’m sure I will remember this one.”

Her eyes sparkled. Then she grabbed Pam’s hand, and before the other girl could suspect her intentions, she started running. Straight toward the biggest puddle she could find. Because while some important decisions in life deserved thought, many others simply deserved a good leap.

Pam giggled at the girl's words, brushing a lot of water out of her face and away from her eyes, "I wasn't gonna die," she joked, covering her eyes and glancing up at the sky for what was perhaps the third time in ten minutes. The storm was unyeilding, pressing down columns of water against her mouth and lower face painfully.

Pam wasn't someone who learnt from her mistakes.

She turned back towards Stelle, hands cupping a bit of the rainwater as it fell. She held it up to the girl, "See? Friendly. Aggressive... But friendly. Like an oversized puppy who doesn't know his own strength."

She giggled, throwing whatever water had accumulated in her hands at Stelle's face, "I thought I was gonna have fun without you too." She agreed, "Wasn't expecting you to join me. Or even notice me really."

Pam vaguely wondered if her friend could hear her. Although they were standing pretty close to each other, it was hard to say over the din of the storm.

"Your grandmother sounds like a nice lady!" She said louder, cupping her hands around her mouth in an attempt to get her message across.

The girl's next few words partially disappeared into the air scattered somewhere into the downpour before they could properly reach her.

Pam found herself pausing anyway.

Maybe Stelle was right.. Pam rarely found herself in a situation where she could just 'enjoy the moment' as they said. Maybe there was something nice about forgetting everything else for a while. No homework. No classes. No expectations. Just rain and laughter and puddles large enough to qualify as lakes.

It felt strangely freeing.

The thought survived for all of three seconds.

Then Stelle grabbed her hand and took off running.

"Wait a sec—"

Pam stumbled after her, nearly losing her footing as she splashed into a large puddle in her path. She laughed.

Honestly, she had no idea where they were going.

The storm had reduced the grounds to a blur of grey and green and water, and at some point she'd stopped caring.

A flash of movement caught her eye to their left. Water rushed downhill in a stream that definitely hadn't existed earlier.

Pam's grin widened.

"Hey!" she called over the rain. "Do you think the Great Lake looks different during storms?"

The idea struck her all at once.

"What if we go see?"

Stelle burst out laughing as the cold water splashed against her face. The rain had hit her so many times in the last few minutes that she could no longer distinguish between the drops falling from the sky and those Pam seemed determined to throw at her personally. She brought a hand to her face to brush away a few soaked curls that were starting to escape her hairstyle and watched her friend with a mixture of amusement and resignation. There was something extraordinary about Pam when she faced a storm. Most people regarded bad weather as a warning; Pam, on the other hand, seemed to receive it as a formal invitation written in gold ink. She didn't fight the rain or try to shield herself from it. She accepted it with such genuine joy that it was hard not to be swept up in it. She watched her cup the water in her hands as if she were holding a precious treasure.

"Friendly?" Stelle repeated between laughs. "I think you and I have very different definitions of that word."

Yet, as she said it, she found herself unable to stop smiling. Perhaps Pam was right. There was a strange generosity to that storm. It soaked everyone equally. It made no distinction between bright students and clumsy ones, between prefects and troublemakers, between those running for shelter and those who, like them, seemed to have completely lost their minds. The sky roared overhead. In the distance, a branch bent under the weight of the wind, and curtains of rain momentarily darkened the castle. It was beautiful. Not beautiful in the delicate way of spring flowers or well-tailored dresses. It was beautiful in a wild, messy, ancient way. As if nature had decided to remind everyone that, long before Hogwarts, long before castles and spells and school rules, the world already knew how to create wonders.

As they waded through the puddles, Stelle felt Pam's hand remain steady in hers. It brought a warm, familiar feeling, oddly contradictory considering they were both drenched. She liked moments like this. Not because they were extraordinary, but because they were the exact opposite. No one was trying to impress anyone. There were no elegant balls, no banquets, no grand ceremonies. None of the expectations that had so often seemed to haunt her since she'd arrived at Hogwarts. It was just a rainy afternoon, and yet she suspected she would remember it for years. Perhaps because friendships were built precisely like that: from small, absurd moments that ended up occupying more space in your memory than grand events.

When Pam pointed to the makeshift stream cascading down the hill, Stelle followed her gaze. The water ran swiftly through the grass, forming makeshift paths that would surely disappear when the sun came up. It made her think of stories. Her grandfather used to say that some people flowed through life like permanent rivers, leaving deep footprints in their wake. Others were like those temporary streams: they appeared unexpectedly, transformed the landscape for a moment, and even after they vanished, left something different behind. Pam belonged to the second category. It was impossible to remain indifferent around someone like her. Then she heard the question: The Great Lake during a storm?

Stelle's blue eyes lit up immediately. Most students would have thought of danger first. She pictured the dark surface churning in the wind, the waves crashing against the shore, the silvery reflections of lightning gliding across the water like serpents of light. It sounded magnificent, utterly reckless but magnificent.

"I think it looks spectacular," she replied, raising her voice above the roar of the rain.

The storm seemed to celebrate the idea, sending a fresh gust of wind that nearly ripped a ribbon from her hair. She glanced in the direction where the lake lay, invisible behind the gray mist that enveloped the grounds. For a moment, she felt that particular thrill that always came before an adventure. Not a heroic or dangerous adventure. One of the best kinds: those that began without a plan. She squeezed Pam's hand a little tighter.

"Let's find out!"

Speech -- Thoughts

Pam's eyes lit up at once.

Honestly, she'd expected at least a token objection. Something about safety. Or common sense. Or not wandering toward a giant lake during a thunderstorm.

Instead, Stelle had agreed almost immediately.

It was deeply encouraging.

It was probably also concerning.

"Excellent decision."

As though nature itself objected, a powerful gust of wind slammed into her from the side, knocking her hair into her face and rendering her eyes temporarily out-of-service. Pam blinked, suddenly disoriented, and blurted, "Mr Storm, wait on the water for a second, my eyes hurt—" She rubbed her eyes for what was perhaps the fifteenth time that minute, before blinking owlishly at Stelle, "Alright so perhaps the weather disagrees."

The nature gods probably already knew Pam was not one to be deterred by the possibility of bad ideas.

Pam laughed anyway.

The grounds had stopped resembling actual grounds a long time ago. Between the puddles, streams, runaway leaves and questionable visibility, it felt more like they were attempting to cross an entirely different country.

"You're so easy to convince, by the way."

She sounded positively delighted by the discovery. Calm done Pam, control your troublemaking thoughts. Do not scare your friend away—

She's only been here five minutes.

It had probably been more than five minutes.

She had to ask, though.

"If I told you there was a dragon in the Forbidden Forest right now, would you come with me?"

She squeezed Stelle's hand in hers, tugging the girl towards the general direction of the Great Lake as she spoke. And by general direction she meant— "Are we going the right way? The storm has put my navigation skills on cooldown."

Water rushed downhill in every direction now, carving temporary rivers through the grass. Tiny streams crossed their path every few feet, weaving around rocks and roots before disappearing into the ground.

Pam watched one race past her shoe.

She briefly considered naming it.

Then, a leaf shot past her face at an alarming speed.

Pam stared after it.

Had the storm suddenly decided to weaponized foliage? Why?

She still couldn't quite believe Stelle had actually come outside.

Most people saw thunderstorms and immediately sought shelter.

Stelle had apparently looked at the situation and decided to make it everyone else's problem.

Or had she seen Pam and decided to make the girl her own problem?

Her mind wondered as she thought of the Great Lake. The lake had always felt enormous. Not like the ocean, of course. But enormous enough that standing on one shore made the opposite side feel impossibly distant. Pam had once wondered whether the opposite shore actually even existed at all.

So, how would it look when a large-scale storm got involved in the story? Did the surface turn silver? Did waves form? Could the giant squid tell when it was raining?

That last question lingered for longer than it probably should have. Considering Pam had never actually set her eyes on the elusive resident of the Lake before.

Would the Lake be pretty? She remembered how the Lake looked in the middle of winter, covered with ice down to it's core. The surface had glittered beneath the sunlight like glass, still and silent and impossibly calm.

It would be a very different situation now.

For starts, there would be no calm anywhere, not with the way the storm was raging on. Still, it was bound to be pretty, she supposed, being water on water and all. But if she had to guess, it would look scary too. Terrifying too. The sort of frightening that made people unable to turn their eyes away.

Terrifyingly beautiful.

Beautifully terrifying.

Was that even a thing?

It sure felt like a thing.

Well, there was no reason to keep lingering on the thought right now. Luckily for her, whatever the lake looked like now, they were about to find out.

Assuming, of course, they were walking in the correct direction.

Which remained an increasingly optimistic assumption.

Stelle's expression lit up with a smile so spontaneous it seemed to have appeared long before that conversation. Pam made her stomach flutter with excitement. She probably wasn't the type of person who would naturally follow someone into the middle of a storm, not on a normal day, not if it were anyone other than Pam. But somehow, she would follow her to the ends of the earth without hesitation, because from the very first moment she knew Pam was an incredible person. She didn't believe in people who were completely pure of heart; it didn't sound human at all because it meant they had never lived or thought anything bad, which was the whole point of living, of experiencing. But perhaps there was one (maybe two), and she was by her side.

As if the storm had heard their excitement, a gust of wind descended the hill with the solemnity of an orchestra conductor. The water changed direction for an instant and struck their faces with unexpected force. Stelle's golden curls completely escaped any attempt at taming, and a strand ended up plastered against her cheek. She didn't try to fix it, and for the first time in a long time, she found it pleasant to let the wind decide for her. She watched, amused, as Pam argued with the storm as if she could actually negotiate with the clouds.

"I think she's trying to impress us. Or maybe she's just been bottling all this up for too long." She looked up at the gray sky, where lightning fleetingly illuminated the layers of rain. She liked to think that even the weather had emotions. They continued walking as water trickled around their shoes, forming small, impromptu rivers. The entire garden seemed to have forgotten where the paths ended and the grass began. The flowers bowed in the rain like ladies saluting the passing of an invisible queen, and the tree branches swayed with the patience of those who knew that every storm, sooner or later, would become a memory. Then Pam remarked that it was very easy to convince her. Stelle tilted her head slightly, seriously considering it.

"I suppose so. But it's only because it's you." She smiled somewhat shyly and gazed at the forest, the rain falling among the leaves, and the clouds that seemed so low they could almost be touched. Did plants and clouds feel like people? She wondered curiously. Perhaps there was a cloud in love with the mysterious nature of Hogwarts, and the rain was like little kisses to its beauty. After all, storms always brought life to the forests when the sun came out. If that were the case, then the rain wouldn't bother her so much.

Though lost in thought, the question about the dragon made her laugh so sincerely that even the rain seemed to quiet down. She feigned a deeply serious expression. The image struck her as so absurd that she laughed again.

"Is it a dragon resting or one that has students for breakfast? If I just wanted to observe it from afar... I think I would go. Who would pass up the chance for something like that?" Pam then asked if they were on the right path. Stelle looked around, but everything seemed different. The storm had erased all familiar landmarks of the castle. The paths resembled streams, the hills were lost in the rain, and the horizon was barely a bluish shadow. Yet, far from unsettling her, she found it beautiful; it was like discovering Hogwarts for the first time.

"I'm not sure, but water always finds the lake. I think if we follow it, it will eventually show us the way." She studied the terrain for a few more seconds before pointing to the slope. Then, she looked down at one of the small streams that wound among the stones. As they descended, a leaf flew between them with such speed that Stelle had to duck, laughing.

"Well... she definitely knows where she's going." The comment hung in the air amidst her laughter. After a few minutes, sound arrived before sight. It wasn't the tranquil murmur of the lake they knew on sunny days, but a deep, resonant, almost ancient rumble. As if a gigantic creature were breathing beneath the surface.
