Walking down the hall, Wyatt hummed Leadbelly’s Where Did You Sleep Last Night. It was a haunting song, not just because it wasn’t recorded in a huge fancy studio, but it was also slow like the song was somehow taking its time. The echo-ey song reminded him of the halls of Hogwarts, so he hummed it quite often. He let his own voice echo in the halls as he made his way to the Rehearsal Room, as it didn’t really seem like anyone else was in the corridor. He had his guitar and his bass with him. He didn’t know what song he’d want to work on, so he just brought both. They were in their own separate sturdy cases, if there was one thing Wyatt cared about, it was his instruments. He wasn’t just going to carry them around loosely. He sold all of his dad’s old books to make up enough money to buy the instruments and their cases, but it wasn’t really a loss. Wyatt hated reading, and his mom didn’t like it either. Wyatt assumed if his dad really cared about the books he would’ve taken them with him, or at least sold them himself.

He opened the door to the rehearsal room and was grateful to find it was empty. There were a lot of talented kids at this school, which was nice- it kept things interesting and fresh or whatever you say, but it wasn’t so good for privacy. He walked over to the piano and sat on the chair in front of it. He played the first bit of A Day In The Life. He wouldn’t really be Wyatt Starkey if he didn’t start his practice with a Beatles song, would he? When he got bored with that, he picked up his guitar. He played the song that was stuck in his head, Where Did You Sleep Last Night. He mumbled the lyrics,

"My girl, my girl, don’t lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night.
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don’t ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through…"

He cut the song there, he was happy to get even just that bit out, as singing the song that was stuck in your head was the only remedy for getting it… unstuck. Plus, he was getting bored, something Wyatt was prone to. He racked his brain for more songs he could do, but he just couldn't think of one. He sat there for a bit, thinking. Too bad he was stuck again. He started absent-mindedly picking Blackbird as he thought about what to do next. Sure, it was odd to pick a pretty difficult song without even thinking about it, especially since Wyatt was no prodigy. Really, he'd practiced that song and practically only that song for about a month straight, because it had to be just perfect. He could do it in his sleep.
Just then, he heard the door creak open.

She was in a good mood today. Hannele was heading to the Trophy Room on the third floor, coming from the Gryffindor Tower in worn black sweater and matching colored jeans. She wanted to check out the cups and medals the school had won, thinking of when her name would finally be up there. She could only imagine her mum's face when she found out that her daughter had won a broom flying game! Not that I can really tell her anyway, she thought sadly before quickly discarding the thought.

As she was making her way over to the next set of stairs Hannele heard a piano being played nearby. She paused for a moment, smiling a little; she loved the piano best, given that it was the only instrument she could play, but also because of how beautiful it sounded. Back home Hannele would play on her father's piano everyday, reading from the sheets he had left behind before he passed away. It somewhat made her feel like she was touching a part of him when she was playing the keys, as if he had never really gone.

In her spirits, Hannele felt like complimenting the musician, who was playing awfully well in her opinion. As she walked over to the Rehearsal Room, which she thought the noise came from, she wondered whether it was a student or professor playing, or perhaps even a ghost, if that sort of thing happened around here. She didn't want to walk in on one of those anymore, especially after one had decided to float through, which was the most dreadful experience in her life.

She quietly pushed open the door in order to not disturb the occupant, or occupants, but she did so anyway, making it creak. She peeked in regardless, just managing to see a boy sitting at a piano, mouthing words to the song, she presumed. Hannele pursed her lips, wondering if she should go back to what she was doing, but she really wanted to share a few kinds words.

"You play well," she said, anticipating a heated reaction. For some reason he seemed like the type of person who didn't take interruptions lightly.

"You play well.”

Wyatt sighed, and turned his attention to the intruder, though it was a public space, she was the one out of line in his eyes. He was simply blinded by the embarrassment of being caught when he was most vulnerable, playing an instrument.

“Thank you. Means a lot,” he said, sarcastically. He wasn’t so excited about being seen playing or being complimented... or being complimented about his playing. But then his embarrassment settled, and he found he was acting irrationally, and being mean for no reason. He hoped the girl would take his sarcasm as humor, even though he didn’t intend it to be humorous in the moment. Trying to save the “conversation,” he asked, “Do you play?”

He noticed she wasn’t wearing her uniform, and couldn’t really tell her house, but it didn’t really matter. Wyatt was wearing a grey hoodie and black sweatpants, his usual outfit. Dressing for comfort, never for style. He didn’t care much about how he looked, he didn’t really have enough money to look like he cared anyway. Practically all of his clothes were hand-me-downs... from his father.

Still plucking his guitar lightly, he observed the girl. She didn’t look uncomfortable, but did look slightly relieved to have gotten a calm answer from Wyatt. Before, she looked like she was ready to take on an aggressive reply.

At the sigh, Hannele felt that it was cue to take her leave, so she took a step backwards. I was only being nice. Maybe I should've said something rude instead. That was her usual way, throwing an insult first rather than be nice but today she wasn't in a mean mood so she had only meant to compliment. But it did seem like she had interrupted some kind of moment. She felt a little bad, knowing how that felt, but she wasn't going to tell him so.

Then he said, "Thank you. Means a lot."

Hannele stepped back in with a grin, even though she heard the sarcasm. It was better than nothing, at least, even if it was still a bit rude. But she was used to things like that so she hardly cared.

"Do you play?" he asked.

"Yes, for five years. The piano, at least," Hannele said, glancing at the guitar.

She looked him up and down, noticing how his clothes seemed worn and passed down. That kind of stuff didn't matter much to Hannele, since she was wearing the same state of clothing, almost. All of her things were second-hand.

She didn't really know what to do now, she had only meant to share a compliment. Hannele pursed her lips and looked down, then said, "Well, guess I'll be going now...nice hearing you...?" She was implying for his name.

Sorry that I didn't read it correctly, I wrote that you were singing to the piano instead of the guitar.

"Yes, for five years. The piano, at least," The girl said.

She looked him up and down, which always made Wyatt feel uncomfortable, there was a good amount of rich kids at the school, and he felt constantly judged. More kids than you would think looked him up and down in the halls, staring at his budget robes. Something about her gaze was sympathetic. When he looked at her longer, he noticed how her clothes looked second-hand, too. He relaxed a bit, he wasn't being cornered by an egotistical, rich, snotty student- it was someone not unlike himself. He wasn't exactly thrilled she wasn't able to afford the best clothes, but it made talking a lot easier.

She looked down and said, "Well, guess I'll be going now...nice hearing you...?" She was implying for his name. He replied, “Wyatt.” He waited before saying what came next, he wasn’t in the mood for making friends, but he was interested in hearing her play. “You’ve been practicing for 5 years? Prove it,” he said. “Play something.” He put his guitar strap on quickly and stood up. He gestured to the piano. “C’mon, why not.” He gave a small smile. She was nice enough to see past his “means a lot” comment, so why not nice enough to play.

There were so many talented kids at that school, it almost seemed like you’d be special if you didn’t have any interests or hobbies at all.

She furrowed her brows. She didn't feel like piano right now, especially in front of an audience, even if it only consisted of a boy. She usually just played by herself, or for her younger brother. Sometimes she would even play for her mother when she came home, but that was rarely. Her mother usually teared up when anything reminding her over their father came up.

"I'd rather not, actually," she said, but she walked further into the room instead of leaving. She gazed at the piano longingly but for mixed reasons. There were so many songs she could play, probably way more than him. Other times she would've jumped at the idea to show off but the piano was something sacred, something she didn't like to play around with. It's music seemed to fragile to take lightly.

"Yeah, I've been practicing since I was seven years old." She frowned at his smile. "And I don't need to prove anything to you." She felt herself getting snarky, but didn't care. He had touched a nerve.

She opened her lips to say something but then shook her head and started to leave. Sure, maybe he had only meant to be nice but she just wasn't in the mood. Besides, what song would she even play? Nothing he'd probably like hearing. Most of the songs she knew were either exuberantly uplifting or shoulder-saggingly depressing, and who'd want to hear all of that?

"I'd rather not, actually," she said, but she walked further into the room.

“Oh, come on, you’re looking at the thing like it’s part veela!” He smirked, gesturing towards the piano. “You want to play, just not for me, I’m hurt.” He rolled his eyes.

"Yeah, I've been practicing since I was seven years old." She frowned at his smile. "And I don't need to prove anything to you."

“A Gryffindor,” he guessed, smiling again. “Gryffindors are the most fun. You are a Gryffindor aren’t you?”

As she started to turn to leave, Wyatt ran to the piano and played the most annoying song he knew. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. His hatred for that song was valid- even John Lennon hated it. It was like if The Beatles got high and tried to play Lady Madonna. He laughed a little at the thought, though it was likely. The Beatles used to get high… a lot.

“You don’t have to prove anything because you’re a proud Gryffindor,” he said, over the music. “But come on, why not. You heard me play it’s only fair. I won’t stop playing until you start playing.” He smirked, “I have nothing better to do.”

Either she was really bad, or really angry, but he hoped he could annoy her into playing. He was just so bored, and she wasn’t going to interrupt his playing without playing herself.

Hannele paused at the door and turned around, giving him a strange look. He sure is weird, she thought. She didn't know what his problem was. He was obviously bothered by her interrupting, so why did he suddenly want her to stay so badly? Whatever he was singing was really annoying but she only scowled.

He guessed her house right, at least, but she decided to lie for fun. Though she pretended she was telling the truth very well. "I'm actually a Hufflepuff, but alright. I don't want to prove to you anything because I don't want to, and because you're just a dumb, stupid boy."

She smirked. If he wanted to be irritating then fine, that wasn't any of her business. Hannele had better things to do than listen to his now terrible playing.

"It's kind of obvious that you have nothing better to do because you've been nothing but rude. I gave you a compliment and now you're trying to irritate me into playing on the piano."

She had dealt with boys like him before, the ones who were too childish for their own good. Usually Hannele just ignored them but she had thought things would be different at this magic school, which is why she was even giving him the time of day with all of his ignorance.

"Hope you find a better attitude." Hannele rolled her eyes and walked out of the room.
