Lily had been walking around the courtyard for a long time now, too deep in thought. This was the first time she had been this deep in her thoughts at Hogwarts; although that wasn't much of a surprise, as she used to blank out now and then when she was at her manor with her cousins. This was one of the reasons Lily was often called weird. She hadn't cared much when she was younger, but of course, now she knew what they meant.

She let out a deep breath, trying to calm herself and stop the train of thought in her brain. She really needed to know how to stop overthinking sometimes. But her brain refused to stop. It always came back to him. Always him. As if he were now a small part of her brain. And the worst part was that she could never deny that he was on her mind most of the time.

She imagined what her father would have told her if she ever told him about her thoughts. His expectations of both her and her sister had always been too high. He would have told her that it was no time to be thinking about boys. But he would still have stayed; she knew it deep down in her heart.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw him, also just standing there. She thought for a moment about whether she should go over or stay where she was. After a moment, she started to walk toward him, only to notice that a girl was walking towards her, her emotions unreadable. Is that girl coming towards me? She thought to herself. She decided to stop just in case she was.

Lilly was loving Hogwarts, it was everything she ever expected and way more. She had just finished charms, and needed to get out of the castle for a bit. She walked through the entrance hall and out into the courtyard. There were a few students milling around, leaning on trees with books and homework spilling onto the ground as they checked their answers before writing them in, quills scratching at the parchment. She looked around, looking for anyone she knew.

On the far side of the courtyard, she spotted Ryder. He was her childhood friend, one of the only people her parents allowed her to see as they didn’t want her accidentally showing magic to any muggles. He never knew, but she had always liked him. His eyes were like sunken stars, the brown deepness seemed to consume her soul whenever he looked into hers.

She watched him for a moment, his hair seamlessly falling into place, just covering his eyes. A girl from her house, another girl (also called Lily, but with one ‘L’ instead of two) started to walk towards him. It was really obvious that Lily had a crush on Ryder, annd they had been spending more time together, and Ryder had less time with Lilly.

Lilly made a brief decision before starting to walk towards her. She had no idea what she was going to say, but was sure she’d figure it out and make it up as she went.
“Hey! How are you? Lilly approached Lily, linking arms with her as they met. Without giving her time to respond, she continued. Lilly smirked at her. “So uh I know you have a crush on Ryder”

Ryder had not intended to spend his afternoon in the courtyard. The castle had felt unusually crowded after classes, packed with students moving from one corridor to another, their voices bouncing off the stone walls.
So he'd wandered outside.

He stood near one of the old trees, hands shoved into his pockets as he watched the clouds drift across the sky. It reminded him a little of home. Not the Hawke Manor itself (that place gave him the creeps) but the countryside beyond it. Open fields. Quiet roads. Places where nobody expected anything from him.

His hair blew a little in the wind as it brushed away from his forehead. He let his mind wander everywhere. He let his thoughts drift past Hogwarts and Lily for a while.

Instead, he found himself wondering what summer would look like when it finally arrived.

Would Hogwarts still feel strange when he returned next year?

Would some of the friendships he'd made survive the holidays?

His thoughts drifted from one thing to another until movement caught his attention.

Across the courtyard, he spotted Lily.

A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. There she was.

For a second, it looked like she might be heading in his direction.

Then another girl appeared.

Lilly Lightwood.

Ryder recognized her immediately. They had known each other since they were children, long before Hogwarts had entered either of their lives.

He watched as Lilly reached Lily and linked arms with her.

His brow furrowed slightly.

That was unexpected.

The two girls seemed to start talking about something. Whatever it was, it looked important enough that neither paid him any attention.

Not that Ryder could hear a single word from where he stood, and he wasn't about to walk over and interrupt.

Girls had conversations. Sometimes those conversations made absolutely no sense to him. He had learned that lesson years ago.

So he stayed exactly where he was.

After a while of looking at the girls, his stormy eyes looking eagerly trying to figure out this unusual alliance, he turned his face away back to the wind.

Say whatever you want about me. Just don’t touch what’s mine.
