🅸t was a normal day with the faint scratching of quills and the sound of turning pages. A few students walked past Skylar, who kept her head low as she sat with an open book in front of her that she had not actually read for the past ten minutes, and finally she decided to get up.

She put the book back to its place, pretending to wander between the rows of shelves, searching for something far less suspicious than what she actually wanted, then paused occasionally to pull random books from the shelves. Two gray eyes constantly glanced at the far corner, and quiet feet slowly edged closer to the small tables dividing the two sections. “Ummm… not this one,” A fake mutter she mumbled while her eyes drifting beyound the silver plaque and chains. She did not forget to be wary of Miss Doukas from time to time. Standing near the restriction area, she opened the book as her cover, trying to read the titles of those book from the other side.

After one detention for attempting to brew Dogbreath Potion, Skylar still had not stopped her craving for experimentation. Yet, she thought this time should be longer. There had to be advanced potion books somewhere, with better techniques and more interesting mixtures.

Most were impossible to read clearly from where she was. Some were buried beneath dust and shadow. She narrowed her eyes and tried to get as close as possible.

The sun filtered through the window, behind Iris's back, gently warming her up as she pored over her History of Magic Homework. The quill scratched on the parchment in a neat, cursive calligraphy.

"Oh, for Merlin's sake!" Iris hissed as, as she put a bit too much pressure while writing, the ink came out with a wet splash, leaving a round stain right in the middle of the page. With a sigh, she dropped the quill and crossed her arms. History of Magic. If before she didn't want to do her homework, now continuing was totally out of the question.

Rummaging in her book bag, Iris pulled out a cotton handkerchief, wiping the point of her quill and gently dabbing the stain on the parchment. When they were dry enough, she rolled the paper and put the quill back in its casing.

In that moment, her eyes fell on familiar, short brown hair, moving suspiciously behind the last shelves, the ones closer to the restricted section. Her brows furrowed. Was that...? Yeah. That was Skylar, her roomie. No doubt.

Putting the roll with her homework and the case with her quill in her bag, slinging it on her shoulder, Iris tentatively approached the figure, her teeth nibbling her bottom lip as she tried to make out what Skylar was doing there.

"Hey, Skylar", Iris chimed in from behind her back. "Are you..." Iris's eyes fall on the book between the other girl's hands, opened in front of her while she clearly looked at the opposite side, right beyond the silver chains that separated the restricted section from the rest of the library. Iris cleared her throat, resuming her question, "Are you reading anything interesting?" She asked, slightly inquiring.

🆂he startled out of her skin, snapping the book shut quickly. “What… Oh, Iris.” A wry grin tugged at her lips. Then, she forced herself to look normal again. “Hi!” She noticed the girl's gaze at her book, which she had no idea what it was called, because she did not read a single word. Skylar pressed it against her chest, crossing her arm around it, hoping to avoid that typical question she could not answer. Yet, she failed. “Nothing interesting, really. I just… just…” She glanced at the nearest shelf around her and put the book somewhere that was not its usual place. “I just grabbed the wrong one.” She gave a smile that looked convincing enough to call it genuine.

It should be believable if the Restricted Section was not directly behind her, which did not exactly help her case much. Her curious eyes also betrayed her. She could not stop glancing toward those silver chains curling around the mysterious books. That was too tempting! What’s inside them that they had to be locked away?

She sighed. “Alright, I admitted. I am looking for something. I mean, some book, and I guess it has to be in there somewhere.” She led her brow to the section behind, biting her nails while thinking in the process. “There has to be something useful, right? The school wouldn’t chain up boring books.”

"Skylar!" Iris's eyes went slightly wide, while she grabbed the book placed in the wrong place, and replaced it in its original spot. "What kind of books are chained in the Restricted Section is none of our business! Boring or not!" She exclaimed, crossing her arms.

Her teeth sank into her bottom lip. "Yelling is not appropriate for a little lady like yourself. If you want to express disagreement, you must do it with polite sterness." Her grandmother's voice rang out in her head, pedantic. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to sound so harsh," she started, gaining a very non-childlike composure. It almost looked ridiculous how she straightened her back and politely crossed her hands on her belly. "I meant to say that we probably shouldn't pry in the Restricted Section. I'm sure you can find what you need in these shelves... " She finished in a way-too-polished, and way-too-clean tone. A slightly anxious look took over her face. "Besides, we could end up in detention if we got caught! Detention!" The girl repeated, as if she were naming the worst thing one could ever go through.

Still, as she observed her friend eyeing the chains curiously, she couldn't help the slight acceleration of her heartbeat and the faint itching of curiosity herself, in a not-so-remote corner of her brain, her eyes starting to involuntarily dart in that direction too. Iris sighed a little. "I'm absolutely," She started, trying to sound firm. "Absolutely", she repeated "Not saying that we should go there, but what were you looking for anyway?" She asked.

🆂kylar paused, staring at Iris for a moment before lifting a tug of her lips, chuckling. “You sound like my mother.” There was more amusement than mockery in her tone. She did not mean that in a bad way. Other than sharp eyes, Skylar would get more than one warning from her parents after they came back from a long journey and found out what trouble she had made when they weren’t at home. Listening to well-manner apology from her dormmate, seeing how the girl fixed her composure, this was the ideal daughter of the Astor family for sure. She would fit well in my family. She thought.

“No need to stress yourself. We’re not at home.” She lowered her voice when her eyes caught someone passing by. “I know we shouldn’t pry, but it won’t hurt anyone if we do a little exploring. Won’t it?”

The worried look on Iris's face nearly gave her a second thought, but when the detention was brought up, it was a ridiculous thing to someone like Skylar, who had experienced it before. She couldn’t hold her laugh. “We won’t die from that, not a big deal.” She brushed it off casually. “Relax, I’m not planning to break in during broad daylight.” A pause. “…Probably.” She shrugged. “If we’re not caught, we won’t get a detention.” She said as if Iris had already agreed to help her. “Come on, don’t you ever wonder what kind of book is in there?” She hoped she could persuade Iris. And that’s it! Skylar smirked when her mischievous mind succeeded. It seemed her curiosity was becoming contagious somehow. “I am looking for an advanced potion book. Have you ever heard of Moste Potente Potions?”

The way Skylar was so calm about the perspective of getting detention puzzled Iris to no end. Wasn't she worried about her parents' reactions?

However, when Skylar mentioned that Iris sounded like her mother, she struck a nerve. Iris' lips thinned into a line, chewing the inside of her cheek.

On one hand, breaking the rules was the last thing she would ever dream of doing. On the other hand, she didn't want to look like a goody-two-shoes.

If we're not caught, we won't get detention. Yeah right. A piece of cake.

Iris, however, did know that she'd be lying if she said she never wondered what kind of books they kept in the Restricted Section. Or, well, actually, there was a list of questions in order of priority:
1) Why would they keep dangerous books in a school? Near the students' library, no less!
2) Why weren't they guarded better? There was literally no one there.
3) And only finally, what books were there?

Iris could feel her responsible side giving in to curiosity a little too quickly for her taste as she kept thinking how she promised her family she wouldn't get in trouble.

The mention of Moste Potente Potions did the trick. Iris' eyes went slightly wide and before she knew it, she was slightly leaning forward, eager. With a gulp she forced herself to stand back.

She just needed to put up some more resistance, acting like she was trying her hardest to be good, just in case they'd get caught, so she'd feel less guilty.

"No, I've never heard of them..." She said, feigning disinterest.

Skylar immediately noticed the slight change in Iris’s expression. The way she leaned forward before catching herself. Oh, so she was interested. A small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. “Really?” she pretended to ask innocently, making the girl in front of her feel more curious and want to join her wicked plan.

“It’s one of the most famous potion books ever written. Advanced recipes, rare ingredients, complicated brews…” She leaned a bit closer and lowered her voice, as though discussing some great secret. Her eyes gleamed with excitement. “I heard some of the potions inside aren’t even taught until much later. I once brewed the dogbreath potion before, but it was just a potion that taught for the first year, so imagine… the potion that is more powerful than the one we learned. If we succeed, we might have it for dueling in the upcoming second year. That would be brilliant!”

Skylar paused dramatically. “Moreover, some people say there are recipes in there that can alter memories, change appearances, or do things most students aren’t supposed to know yet. If we experiment with them first. Then, we could be on the next level of our class. Right?” She glanced toward the shelves beyond the chains. “Alright,” she added quickly. “We don’t have to look.” A beat. “We could just walk past the Restricted Section, and if we happened to notice whether Moste Potente Potions was there…” Her shoulders lifted in an innocent shrug. “Well, that’s hardly breaking any rules, is it?” The expression on her face suggested she knew perfectly well how questionable that logic was. She tilted her head. “Just curious enough to look.” She was trying and failing to suppress her grin, making it very clear that she was excited for the answer.
