It was a warm June day, in the midst of the meteorological start of summer. The rain over Scotland had eased, birds and insects were flying around or chirping in the trees and the sun was shining warmly upon the castle grounds. June was known as the month of blossoms and sunshine, of roses in all colors. Jun particularly enjoyed those warmer months. They felt easier, lighter. As though ones being lifted along with the thick white clouds, blue sky’s and color all around - after months and months of rain, gray clouds and cold winds.

Classes had just finished for the day and Jun‘s last period had been Defence against the Dark Arts, which she did enjoy most of the time. It was quite the interesting class, especially since the topics were usually ones she enjoyed learning about.

Dinner was still a couple hours away and while Jun did have some assignments piling on her desk, the sun tickling in her nose as she walked through the courtyard was too big of a distraction to focus on anything class related. Instead, once up in her dorm, she changed from her uniform into more athletic clothing and grabbed her broom in one swift motion. The wood was smooth beneath her touch and she felt her heart do a slight jump in her chest.

The young Ravenclaw used to fly much more frequently, though often with her father, which she had always throughly enjoyed. Now soaring through the air was commonly more of an escape rather than simple enjoyment. However, she had recently signed up for broom racing, so perhaps it could become more of an enjoyment again at some point.

Once Jun had arrived by the Outdoor Club Area, she wasted little time on the ground and kicked off, a gust of wind causing some of the loose strands from her braid to flutter in her face. Being up in the air often felt like freedom to her. Like she did not need to do anything than be in the moment. Jun closed her eyes for a moment, straightening on her broom and just feeling the warmth of the sun on her skin, the breeze in her hair, the wood beneath her fingers, the way her wand was tugged in the pockets of her leggings.

Then she took a deep breath, before getting ready to try some maneuvers, to get back into the flow of flying.

From the ground or close by, one might observe the young girl racing back and forth to warm up, attempting to avoid obstacles, fly backwards or try and match her speed. Then - too fast to look remotely like this was going to work - one might see Jun racing towards two tree branches and ouch- instead of flying through them, the second year landed stomach first on one of the branches, embarrassingly close to crashing down entirely. Though gladly, Jun remained with just a little dignity left and didn’t completely fall, which would have been far more embarrassing.

Della Barfield and her Silver Arrow were just passing through. She had promised herself that. She wasn’t only going to do a quick flying session, just enough to be considered studying for her flying OWL, which she felt she had no problem acing (and Professor Weems backed up her assessment). But the session would be too short to be considered broom racing practice and too short to be considered actual fun. Della needed to be back in the library stat, so that she could continue cramming for the Transfiguration OWL. (Why did that subject vex her so much? At this point, she firmly believed that every object should remain as it was.)

When she reached the track, she saw a little whir of blue in the air. But it didn’t look like a familiar whir; Della had studied all the active broom racers, and she felt confident she knew their flying quirks. The little whir hit more than a few tree branches and nearly crashed into the ground. The whir was young Ravenclaw. Maybe first- or second-year?

Even though she had a full day, Della could not bring herself to ignore this. When someone could not handle their broom, she felt that it was her duty to step in. She hopped on her broom, feeling the heat of the summer air transform into a calming breeze that blew her long silver behind her. It was the best feeling in the world.

She stopped on a dime and hovered just outside the track of obstacles.

“Hey! I couldn’t help but notice … do you need some pointers?”
