Lauren trembled as the owl fluttered towards the owlery, almost touching the window. Lauren had been writing a letter to her aunt Loratrix about her year in Hogwarts and sought advice on how she, Lauren, could manage the Summer Holidays. Unfortunately, all she got back was a bunch of meaningless letters which lacked an ounce of value. She never knew that her aunt could be sot stupid as to not understand what Lauren wanted to hear from her. Or maybe she was just being deceptive and trying to hide things from her niece. Most of the letters had gone this way:
Hi Lauren! Family's been treating me well these days! Allowed me to stay at the mansion for the whole day without complaint, and your siblings were nice to me in the Easter Break, and currently still are! They bought me tea and stuff, and since you're their sibling (I'm only an aunt!) they'll treat you very well. I think that they've learned from their mistakes and are trying to be the best they can be! Forgive them, Lauren, life will get better, and your summer will thus be happy!
~Aunt Loratrix
Lauren rolled her eyes at her aunt's letter. Seriously, she seemed to think that the Vanes family had changed because they weren't as horrible to her! In school, her siblings were still every bit as horrid to her as they had been before and showed no intention of changing.

Then another thought dawned on her: they had successfully wrapped Aunt Loratrix around their little fingers. Which meant that there would be trouble incoming, probably in the letter the fluttering owl was carrying.

Lauren gingerly took the letter from the owl and flattened it against the table. Seriously, whoever wrote the letter really needed to pay attention to its readability. Who could read a sentence, let alone a whole letter, written in such crumpled parchment?

She understood what it all was about when she read the envelope: Sabrina Vanes, her mother, asking whether she, Lauren, could sneak into Hogsmeade and meet her there. If Lauren met her mother, she would be at the risk of getting a detention for not following school rules or being further taunted by her. But if she didn't go out to meet her, Lauren was at risk of being treated like she was dirt lurking in the corners of her room.

Maybe you deserve -- A voice in her mind started to pipe up, but she quickly pushed the thought away. She was not going to let those voices possess her mind that day. She needed to think.

I climbed up the spiraling never ending steps that lead to the owlery. I was going to send a letter to my parents. It had been quite a while since I updated them about my life, and my experiences at Hogwarts. It wasn't easy adjusting to this new place at first, but now it felt like home. But I wouldn't deny the fact that I always felt safe with my parents, and I did miss my home-Appleton Manor, the woods, the stream behind my place, and not to mention all the little birds and woodland creatures. But the year was almost over, and we'd all soon be back at our homes for the Summer Holidays.

As I reached the owlery, I took out the piece of parchment, and looked around for an owl to send the letter by. There were so many of them, it was a bit confusing to choose one. My eyes then drifted to a Slythering girl in the room. She was looking at a crumpled piece of parchment held flat against the table. She seemed a bit... disturbed or confused, I'd say. Something seemed to be bothering her, and I'd bet it was something in that letter she was reading.

I didn't want to interfere in someone's personal matters, but she seemed to be in a dilemma and I wanted to offer her some solace by trying to help. I approached her and said, "Hey there! Sorry to disturb you, but is everything alright? You seem to be in a bit of a dilemma." I really hoped the girl didn't find me nosy, but I guess anyone would in a situation like this. Either way, I wanted to help her out.

Lauren turned to look at the girl who approached her, and almost jumped in surprise when she saw that it wasn't Arianna or Felix. She half expected them to come and jeer at her, steal the letter and remind her of how nicely her aunt told her to treat the family every time Lauren returned their hostility.

But that was a contradiction to Lauren's core belief: catch on and behave accordingly. Treat others how they treated you. And Aunt Loratrix's letter was literally telling her to abandon her mindset and swap it for a softer one. One that was less strong. One that guranteed defeat. One that would steer Lauren away from victory against her family and her goals.

In that moment, she loathed her aunt. For suggesting such an unreasonable idea.

She sighed when the girl started to ask her questions. Now she would have to explain everything. And she wasn't really in the mood for talking. Still, the girl deserved an explanation.

"Yeah, I'm alright, I guess. It's just that -- I'm on a rebellious streak and now my aunt's trying to ruin my life by telling me to be soft! And the worst thing is that my mother, who hates me, is trying to meet up with me at Hogsmeade, and I don't know if I should ignore it and pretend that I never received this envelope or just do as she says. I want to have everything my own way, but I just can't afford to get on even worse terms with my mother! I just don't know what I should do!"

Then she realised that she'd been talking to the girl for almost a minute and she still didn't know her name. Forgetting to ask as usual.

"Oh, and by the way, my name's Lauren. What's yours?" She tried to sound casual, but could feel that she was failing miserably at it.

The girl turned to look at me. She seemed almost surprised, Of course she does Avery, that's what someone feels like when you approach them out of nowhere, especially when they're in distress. I was really questioning my actions, but I couldn't really control my instincts, after all I'd grew up as a soul who people could rely on at all times, or... most times. Anyways, I was a good listener, and my friends always said I gave good advice. So, there was no turning back now, regardless of what she thought of me.

She started explaining her situation. She said she was on a rebellious streak, which her aunt advised against. She mentioned that her mom hated her, and wanted her to meet at Hogsmead. My immediate thought was, If her mom hates her, why would she want to meet. She continued about how she was confused whether to go or not. She didn't really want to, but would rather not get on her mom's bad side.

Honestly, I was confused as well. I guess the final decision would depend on how bad her relationship was with her mother. I knew some parents could be abusive, not that I was making any assumptions, but if her mom was in fact like that, then she really shouldn't be going. I restricted myself from further asking about her mom.

She then introduced herself as Lauren. I replied, "I'm Avery." I added, "Well, as per what you said, I think you probably shouldn't go to meet her, especially if you think it'd affect you emotionally. Plus, if you're on a rebellious streak, then I wouldn't ask you stop, unless you're doing something dangerous. Don't let anyone force you into doing things you don't feel comfortable doing. Ofcourse, the final decision's up to you. If you choose not to go, you should let your mom know that she must respect your boundaries and choices regardless of her liking, and that she can't enforce things onto you. Let her know that you're not afraid, rather you value yourself and your emotions." I hoped what I said was helpful enough.
