Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8

As spells began to erupt on the piste, Livia's dark eyebrows drew downward, casting shadows over her otherwise lighter eyes. The movement of the boy's hand alerted her to an incoming onslaught; she very neatly stepped to the side, keeping her gaze locked in on the three Hufflepuffs before her.
The incendio that she uttered conjured itself properly, but upon its targeting, it flew awry. Livia glanced down at her wand, minutely disappointed. Then, Verity unleashed a wave of disorientation – though Livia was unfamiliar with Nebulus, she had worked with it previously and could recognise its effects. She found herself narrowing her eyes, the green of her irises becoming like the pinprick of a lighthouse obscured by a storm, as she scanned the piste. The fog, however, overtook her vision. The spindly Slytherin drew her arms closer to herself, an attempt to minimise the space of her that was a viable target. Her heartbeat thrummed beneath her skin, skittering about as if a mouse in a cage.

“Ha ha!”, she yelled out triumphantly as the spell hit the other Veela, causing her feet to start jerking uncontrollably. Tatiana was not so confident at first as she had only used that spell once before during their Charms class and it was on a non-moving target, so of course the girl doubted herself. But Esme wasn't so hard to hit, after all as the girl was also engrossed in her plan to hit Verity.

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
Edward was disappointed, while his casting had been flawless, his aim had been off - or maybe the Slytherin girl had just been good at dodging, he supposed that Slytherins must be better than most at dodging since they typically prioritized their own survival instincts first and foremost… so perhaps it wasn’t his fault after all, though it might still be better to take a slightly different tact… he narrowed his eyes towards the opposing team as he decided his next action…

mentioning @—
Quite immediately, as any proper duel in which Cassius had the privilege of attending, no duellist could afford to be caught off-balance at the beginning of a match.
Never as firey in turn or temper as many of his peers, Cassius took the kinder path and from his wand burst forth a pretty shower of green sparks, skipping across the piste in a glittering flash of blinding light. It was beautiful—and rather easily dodged, which honestly seemed quite fair. He had spent the last academic year studying and the last several months refining alongside his fellow duellists, but, even now, he never failed to feel simultaneously baffled by and charmed by magic’s flashiness. Even with serious intentions, spells like the Green Spark Charm seemed inherently showy, and he hadn’t yet learned to extend his subtlety to casting. Even if his spray of sparks met a far lesser fate than Esme’s firebolt, it was one thing to watch from the sidelines and another to be the one casting.
Cassius had just managed to register Slytherin’s single success—Verity caught aflame, with fire dangerously close for comfort even for a duellist of their ‘enemy’ house— when the fresh, wet smell of fog came upon their side of the piste. Startled, familiar mostly with Fumos’ dark cast, he swept his attention over the piste for their opponent’s celebrations, but he’d been so throughly surrounded that it was difficult to see through the cloudscape surrounding them. If that was the case…! To control visibility was to control navigation itself—if that was truly how the duel would go, he’d merely work with its certainties. The duel had only just begun, and Cassius was not one to be truly dissuaded, even as one of few islands in their muffled sea of pure sound and skill.

| E | ✧ ![]() banner by prat. ![]() The fog that Verity unleashed quickly surrounded both Livia and Cassius. As calm and collected Esme wanted to be, she could not hide the slight pin prick of panic that she felt at the back of her neck. Perhaps it was the sight of her close friend and confidante being enveloped in a shroud of unnatural mist that caught her off-guard; before she could even register what was happening, Esme found herself at the end of a well-timed Tarantallegra that sent her legs spasming. She groaned slightly — a sound she would have considered far too undignified for a public setting if it wasn’t quickly covered up by the sounds of people calling out incantations. With a huff, Esme straightened herself, and joined the fray with a shout of “Incendio!” Though she could not keep still, her aim remained true. Verity caught aflame, and even through the effects of the Dancing Feet spell, Esme could — in a far more dignified fashion, now — her chin in pride. Though the duel was not yet over, hopefully her first spell being a success was a sign of things to come. ![]() action. as strategized. ✧✦✧ |

The next round of spells was much calmer than the first round. Hufflepuff seemed to be going on the offensive while Slythering focused on defense. Considering 2/3 of the team couldn't see, it made sense. Though that also mean't they didn't do any damage to the opposing team which may end up being an issue later.
Livia was attempting to cast the Metelojinx at Hufflepuff which was a smart move. After all passive attacks helped with letting them go more defensive. However it seemed that due to missing her previous spell, her confidence wasn't the highest and she ended up failing to cast the spell in the first place. Yikes!
The other two Slytherins decided that instead of attempting to cast a spell they would dodge what the other team was throwing at them instead. Wise choice She thought, tho it doesn't seem to have been as effective as they had hoped.
One well timed spell by Edward hit Cassius head on. Fawkes hadn't focused on him so she missed the incantation. However seeing the mucus start to come out she figured out the spell. The curse of bogies. She watched Cassius double over and almost throw up while mucus came out from his nose. Her nose scrunched up with mild disgust over it so she turned to see what the rest of the badgers had done.
Verity had finally gotten the flames to go out and decided to get revenge on her attacker. Despite Esme actively trying to dodge, she was still hit by Verity's Incendio. Granted, it wasn't as bad as what happened to Verity since Esme didn't catch aflame. But still, the pain from the fire would still be bad.
Not all hope was lost though for Esme since even though she wasn't able to dodge the incendio, she was able to dodge the flipendo sent her way by her fellow part veela Tatiana.
Now it was getting a bit boring. Fawkes hoped the teams would send out another action packed round of spells just like the first.

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
"Nice!" Vera cheered as Edward's soared towards the snakes. Seeing it go towards their opponents and not backwards gave Vera a wave of relief. The Bogies' curse was always one of the more risky spells at their level since, if it backfired, they had no way to counter it except hope for the best.
As for her and Tatiana's spells, only one managed to actually hit Esme despite her dancing feet, and it was Vera's own Fire-Making Spell at that. Fight fire with fire, they said. Unfortunately, Esme's clothes remained untouched.
"A shame," Vera huffed, "But at least it hit."

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8

When working with brittle materials, there were times when Livia had, while learning, struck a mallet into the wrong section of stone. She had, of course, known what would happen far before it truly did. Dust gathered. Stone creaked. Before she could even blink, the heavy material fell to the ground right before her; only the sheer knowing of the stone's properties had saved Livia's legs.
This was the same. The fog had spread across the piste, enveloping Livia in its slightly-chilled hold, and she had known how it would end before she even began to cast. She wanted to be unaffected by the lack of vision, by the disorientation, but as the realisation that she could not visualise any of her targets or allies hit her, her confidence faltered.
(She could not fail, she would not fail –)
'Metelojinx,' she rasped, and she nearly heard her favourite incantation falling apart as if sandpaper dissolving upon her tongue.
(No, no, no, no, no –)
Livia's grip on her fragile wand tightened. She stared blankly ahead, unable to locate even the hint of a shadow in the thick fog. With her other hand, she tentatively reached upwards, the pads of her fingers brushing against her hairline to ensure no hair had escaped her chignon. The methodical action slowed her thudding heartbeat, and once that consequence of failure no longer raged like an ocean in her ears, the hint of words breezed along: ...at least it hit.
That was not Esme's voice.
Livia's breath caught in her throat. She slowly glanced about her, her head turning as if a puppet on a taut string. It was of no use: she could see neither Esme nor Cassius, so there was no way for her to ascertain the manner in which her allies had been harmed – because of course they had. After all, someone on the other team had said, at least it hit. Not knowing how her team stood meant Livia had no way of understanding the correct actions to take moving forward; removed from that aspect of her usual logical analysis of duels, her heart found itself thudding in the cage of her bones once again, and she did her best to at least control her mind by taking slow, deep breaths.

“Ah, fuck”, she grumbled, face falling. It seems that you couldn't celebrate here early now, could you? Nonetheless, it seemed that their opponents were gradually starting to weaken now, she grinned at that thought.
All three of them had some sort of weakness and had been hit by the spells of her two teammates. Their odds of winning had just shot up, but only a little, though, in her mind, they have just enough time to stir the narrative into what it was supposed to be from the beginning.

| E | ✧ ![]() banner by prat. ![]() The flames of Verity's robes had gone out faster than Esme would have liked them to, she noted with mild dissatisfaction. It seemed they weren't doing great — on one side, Cassius was doubled over, preoccupied with something disgusting; to be entirely fair, Esme did not want to look at it for any longer than the glance she had already spares it. The sight of mucus and snot had made her want to turn around and leave the piste outright. With far too much pride on the line to actually do so, she turned to see Livia, still shrouded by fog. Her Metelojinx failed to form, and Esme had wanted to give an encouraging word — but could not think of anything before feeling the sting of a burn at her skin. “Ow,” Esme hissed, instinctively glaring at Verity. She wanted to think of an insult — something to speak to the girl's insolence and loud fervor that would have bordered on brutish — but she had to admit, the spells hitting so consistently were rather impressive. Besides, it was a duel; only expected of her opponents to actually be trying. Her attention back on the group of badgers, Esme witnessed Tatiana attempt to fling yet another spell her way, and this time was able to side step it with grace that felt actually befit her. She inhaled deeply, feeling a slight tightness at the back of her neck. As... unpleasant as that round had been, Esme still feeling the sting (or burn, perhaps) of getting hit with Incendio herself, at least she had not caught on fire. There was still plenty of duel to go. ![]() action. as strategized. ✧✦✧ |
