2026 Hogwarts Pride:
The Boat Parade
Image posted by the member
June is Pride Month in both the Muggle and the magical worlds, celebrating anyone on the LGBTQIAP+ spectrum and reminding them that they are loved and respected. As June came about, @Aly Salinger, a Quidditch captain and seventh-year in Ravenclaw House, had recently learned that a popular way of celebrating in the Muggle world was through hosting large parades, in which members of the queer community and allies alike would gather to march in or just watch a processional of large and brightly-coloured floats, dance to music, eat great food, and generally have a wonderful time in excellent company! Though there was hardly a road big enough on which to hold a parade at Hogwarts, there was an excellent lake, and Aly and her co-conspirator, Slytherin Quidditch captain and prefect @Charlotte Winfield, had received permission from the professors to use the canoes for a pride-themed boat parade.

Aly and Charlotte had spent the week plastering posters advertising a float-boat-making work-shoppe on Saturday afternoon all around the school; brightly coloured in all the hues of the rainbow, the posters were sure to catch anyone's eye as they boasted: Come make a float for the Pride Parade this weekend! Boathouse, 3 p.m. Saturday. Snacks and materials provided. Now, just before three on Saturday afternoon under the warm June sun, the two girls traipsed down to the Boathouse, arms laden with decorations; the house-elves had already set up a buffet table of snacks, so luckily they didn't have to carry those.

The small brown canoes would fit 4 people each, so that was the maximum that could make a float together to participate in the parade tomorrow. Though the canoes carried their typical wooden shade, they could easily be colour-changed with a flick of Aly's wand if any of the groups requested it (feel free to godmod her changing the canoe to your requested colour). Groups could also decorate their canoes with the offered materials:
  • Pride flags of any kind, shape, and design
  • Feather boas and loose faux feathers
  • Glitter in all shades of the rainbow
  • Poster boards both big and small
  • Paint in every possible colour
  • Rainbow fringe, streamers, & pom-poms
  • Pride-themed props and costume pieces
  • Pieces of plywood for building structures
  • Multicoloured balloons in all sizes
  • Anything else you can think of to use!
And if anyone grew hungry while they worked, or if they were just there to watch and hang out with friends instead of working on the boat, they could also partake in the breathtaking array of rainbow-themed snacks that the Hogwarts house-elves had set out: red raspberry empire biscuits and fresh fruit, orange cheeses and apricot scones, yellow crisps and lemon tartlets, green herb-and-olive cakes and fresh vegetables, blue cloud bread and chocolate-dipped pretzels, violet lavender macarons and ube muffins, and pink strawberry rolls and Tottenham cakes, as well as the natural selection of drinks, including butterbeer and pumpkin juice, among others. This brigade of Pride-celebrators would certainly not go hungry or thirsty today! And if this was the spread laid out for the decorating, one could only imagine what the House-elves were whipping up for tomorrow's parade...

(The parade itself is not part of the errand; only the "float-building/hanging out at the float-building" part counts towards the word count, and the parade thread will be released at the conclusion of the errand.)

Summer seemed to creep up on Garnet. The year had been a blur of homework, tests, and new experiences. But one thing Garnet was no stranger to was Pride.

They had just gotten out of class when a flutter caught their eye. A poster, colorful in the way they loved, waved gently as students hurried through the corridor. Approaching it to get a closer look, they smiled. A Pride parade? With boats as floats? That sounded cool! Garnet wasn't very good at decorating boats, and they were too shy to ask their classmates to join them to make one anyway, but they ripped the flyer off the wall to keep as a reminder.

The weekdays passed slowly until finally the weekend graced Hogwarts with a relieved sigh. Excited to get there early, Garnet dressed in their Pride outfit, adjusting the fit in the mirror before deciding they looked presentable. With a final glance at their reflection, they left their dorm room and hurried to the boathouse to settle and watch the other students arrive.

It was early, Garnet knew that, but they just couldn't wait any longer in the common room. The excitement and anticipation put them in a weird state of waiting that made them restless, and it was driving them crazy. So there they were, crossing the grounds, stopping just as the boathouse came into view. They could see people moving around the area, setting everything up for the parade.

Garnet was impressed with the setup; even from a distance, they could see colors, feathers, and balloons in every shade and hue. Without realizing it, a smile crept across Garnet's face. This was the one month a year they could be unapologetically themself without anyone judging them. In fact, everyone who came to participate would intimately understand what it was like to be part of the LGBTQIA community. Maybe I'll even find some other Aro Ace kids here... they thought with mixed excitement and apprehension. These people here would understand more than most what it was like to be different, and Pride had always been a safe time to be just that. Proud.

Garnet fidgeted with their necklace as they watched everything take shape. I'm going to make friends today. Even if it kills me, they thought, a determined edge to their jaw. I have something to talk about today, at least. Something in common. With determination in their little gay heart, they pushed the usual anxiety about meeting people aside and readied themself to go up and talk to someone for a change. They just had to find the right person to approach.

Before they could decide otherwise, Garnet stood and crossed the rest of the way to the boathouse just as the bell rang out the hour. It was time to put their plan into action. It was time to show everyone their Pride. Taking a breath, they looked around for someone to introduce themselves to, hoping they wouldn't say anything dumb or weird that would embarrass them before they even got off the ground.

Donald walked inside the Boathouse that afternoon just after an intense study session in the Library. Just when he felt an headache start to flourish he understood that he couldn't, for the love of himself, keep studying. He needed a break, and that was when, walking in the halls of Hogwarts, he found one of the many rainbow posters. It's already June...? he almost hadn't noticed, even if it was already the 13th. A second look at the poster confirmed that this event would've started in a few minutes, so he had plenty of time to go down the Boathouse and join the fun, maybe even design a canoe? Taking a small leather bound diary he had on him he browsed it for a few minutes, noting how on every day, beside the classes hours, he was free the rest of the time. He sighed, feeling a pit in his stomach widening. Well...at least there's bound to be someone else at the Boathouse. Closing the notebook, he started walking.

Gingerly he arrived inside the steep brick and ivy structure. Every wall and space available was covered in pride themed stuff, both for the parade and the work at hand, probably. The colors were almost excessive in their brightness and gamma, making Donald wince for a second, his headache making sure to present itself one last time. Trying to wipe it away he went towards the buffet side of the Boathouse, taking a full glass of water and a handful of nuts and almonds, before using the stairs to walk onto the gallery, where he could observe from above everything that was happening. The Boathouse was easily much more eclectic than September 1st, when the first years arrived. With a smile he remembered when a couple years ago, he did the same as many kids do every year, a nostalgic ache filling all the space inside the Boathouse. Those were simpler and easier years. Thinking like this he almost felt like one of those grannies that always complained about everything and everyone, but he felt like he couldn't help himself from thinking like this. The time that passed between the Donald who got off for the first time from one of those canoe and the Donald up in the gallery watching everyone else designing those same boats where...not different people altogether, but with some stark differences. The Donald down there was...mostly afraid. Afraid of a lot of things, both real and imagined, from disappointing his parents to the other students, especially the older ones. Now it was like Hogwarts claimed him. I was afraid because, maybe, I felt like I didn't belong inside the castle. Like I was a foreigner inside its walls and floors. Now...I don't know what changed, but something did. I- A crash stopped his thoughts down below, right before he could finish the thought. Looking down, it seemed like someone clumsy fell onto the floor.

Wait, what am I doing? Brooding like this isn't going to solve anything. Eating the last hazelnut on his hand and walking down the stairs, Even if I feel like this, I need to try to move one from whatever it is. Looking about, he saw a couple of student trying to choose what flags and boas use for their boats. At least, I can try and help the people around me. And with that, he went to see if he could help them.

Remy's first pride.

Remy's very first pride parade.

He wasn't necessarily attracted to anyone, but his author had plans for him to be bisexual when seeking a relationship at some point in his future.

He walked up to the Boathouse, a little annoyed by the walk, but maybe after today he could go swimming in the lake. The place was exploding with color and he squinted as if every colors of Earth had a personal vendetta against him, somewhat blinding him with their vibrancy.

He wasn't used to this much brightness. Or joy.

But he had seen the posters and here he was.

He shoved his hands in his pockets and stepped into the boathouse itself, getting hit with the smell of sugar and paint.

He looked at the snack table. It didn't look so bad, but he also saw other students (faceless npcs) looking at him and he shot them a sharp glare for looking at him. "Yes, go." He muttered under his breath.

'Course, he wasn't actually mad, not really. He was maybe just a little overstimulated. So much color. People. A lot of everything. His chest felt a little tight in a way he couldn't name in English, maybe in Giant. So.. he just scowled.

He drifted closer to the canoes, pretending that he was inspecting them, but really he was more or less trying to decide if he was going to work on a boat float and draw even more attention to him than when Lotus was giving him when he was getting his butt kicked trying to fight the Whomping Willow.

He was really just trying to look busy. There was one person he liked at Hogwarts the entirety of his first year and it was Lotus. Everyone else just pissed him off more than a little brother doing what made you tick and explode.

He had hoped someone had a plan, whoever was joining him, but if he actually decorated the float himself, it was getting nothing but duct tape and bad decisions. Heck, he didn't even know what some of the meanings were for the letters of the LGTBQIA2S+ community or what some of the flags meant. He had seen the diversity inclusive one and he knew what the rainbow colors were for- they were for the community, but he didn't really know what all of the other stuff meant.

He was new to this. Yet, oddly enough, still interested because there was a part of this whole thing that felt.. well.. right.

He looked around real quick to see if anyone was there to help, unless he missed someone- as they were all tiny dwarves and Remy was a giant goliath- he didn't see anyone to help him, so he just made his way to the snack table, grabbing a fistful of crisps and even the lemon tartlets. He never had tarts.

He took a bite and oh god, his face puckered up so much he felt like he had all the air sucked out of his face as the cheeks sucked inwards and his mouth puckered. His author may love lemons and bitter stuff but maybe, just maybe, lemon products weren't for this boy.

Lotus's Thoughts
" Lotus's speech"
Lotus's first pride

I was eleven well really I was almost twelve, and I was sure I knew about the planned pride boat float. And of course, I was going to see who was all there and maybe have some snacks.

There was just something I never really talked about or dared think about as the first time the idea flitted to life it made me feel overwhelmed, and I had just thought it was a part of being a metamorphmagus. Aside the that there were somethings I liked about being a metamorphmagus and those things were that I could change my hair color and make my canine teeth just slightly longer and sharper mostly because that part came in handy with some of the diners eaten at Hogwarts.

I'd eventually reach the Boathouse after what felt like a long walk filled with fidgeting and chewing on my hands. Outside of the place was exploding with so very much color and really I didn't know what to think of it so I'd stop to have a minute so things would be easier to figure out for me. So I stood there tiny fangs embedded in my hand.

I'd eventually make up my mind and go in because what harm would it be. I'd glance around the room and see out of all the people I knew (which wasn't many) Remy over at the snack tables. His face was all scrunched up it reminded me of how I'd scrunch my face when I was maybe four or five years old and my grandma was trying to get me to eat mashed potatoes when I didn't want them.

I'd go over to join him and upon some what standing near him I'd make a soft muffled
mmf?
noise around my hand as if to ask "what are you doin here? And why the face?" without saying anything. I had developed a habit of chewing on my hands when I was thinking about things or was feeling overwhelmed.

The colors and sweet smells were starting to overwhelm me even if it felt kind of well right to be there and I wasn't going to go anywhere because Remy was there and that made this much more bearable.

I'd glance at the boats and then back at him and then back at the boats and then I'd remember something said about my Great grand ma or as my dad had called her his grand parent and how he said that being a metamorphmagus could sometimes mix with how someone felt about themselves.

Dahlia was not, on principle, food-motivated. That would be embarrassing. She was fed plenty during mealtimes although she mainly subsisted off of the fruit and the bread. How could she not? Those were the best parts! It only made sense to fill up on the foods she enjoyed rather than forcing herself to eat institutional meat or boiled, flavorless vegetables. She did not agree to join a pride parade because there were snacks involved.

To the Gryffindor's credit the posters had been hard to ignore. Firstly, they were absolutely everywhere. Common room? Pride. Corridors? Pride. Outside? Pride. It was enough to make a girl curious. Fine. She would attend.

However, one issue remained: the witch wasn't sure what pride was. Dahlia had heard the term in passing, while learning history, but her mother had never told her more than the basics. It was an "event for the LGBT community," spoken about in a tone suggesting no more questions were to be asked.

Unfortunately, more questions were required. The twelve-year-old found the acronym unfamiliar. Why so many letters? Was it a type of algebra equation Dahlia did not understand? There had been no guide on the subject in the Lee family library so her curiosity was left to rot.

The event date drew near and Dahlia was left with two options: she could research the topic and risk looking like a try-hard or she could do no research and risk looking like a fool. The Gryffindor approved of neither, however, the former won out... a responsible, educated choice for once.

Such were the circumstances by which Dahlia found herself on her way to a pride event knowing exactly one basic fact about the celebration. LGTBQIA2S+, as it turned out, was not a mathematical formula (thank Merlin) but a group of people whose genders and orientations departed from the societally conventional. Dahlia was not previously aware she possessed a gender identity or an orientation but she enjoyed departing from the socially conventional. Hence, as she decided, she enjoyed pride.

Her enjoyment of pride and support towards the LGTBQIA2S+ was sufficient to preclude her enjoyment of the event, right? It had mentioned exactly no where that all attendees had to identify as something. She had not been aware she was capable of possessing a gender identity, let alone a sexuality.

Dahlia didn't care much for romance yet but she was absolutely certain she wouldn't marry. Living with a boy in her house... Horrid. Dahlia did not understand why her parents wished it upon her. Her father was a boy, technically, but he did not count because he only possessed two dialogue options: broom specifications or Asian wizarding history. Other boys threw flobberworms at each other for sport and laughed about bodily functions. In other words: they were ogres. Dahlia feared for her sanity at the thought of crushing on someone like that.

She would lose her mind one day. All straight girls did. (That was how they ended up in relationships, right? Dahlia thought so.) She was straight and also a girl, as she expected others could tell. It did not particularly bother her, however, if they could not. A stray glance down towards her shoulders reminded her of her prior, questionable decisions. Her grandmother had told her that short hair was not feminine. However, Dahlia was plagued by the inevitable vice of curiosity— she had to try everything at least once. Parchment scissors in her dormitory, the lack of a mirror, and crippling indecision had landed her with a foot of hair in the bin. Some pieces landed at her cheekbones whereas others fell past her chin. It was ideal for summer heat but ineffective in visually clarifying her femininity at this particular event. Her mother would be furious.

Fortunately, Dahlia was not yet due at her family home. She was in the boathouse surrounded by a magnificent array of products. Glitter in absolutely every color under the sun caught her eye immediately. She preferred darker colors to brighter ones but glitter was always fantastic. Dahlia needed all of it at once. She set her glitter bottles down in a corner.

Why were canoes so heavy? Her fingers curled around the edge of the boat as she attempted to drag it... No success. Dahlia's arms were ornamental, not functional in cases of heavy lifting. Her eyes darted around at the other students. She potentially needed help.

Jay had heard and seen quite a lot about a boat parade for the LGBTQ community all week and naturally Jay was exited, there were Slytherins chatting about it in the common rooms and at dinner so it had would have been hard not to know.

For a twelve year old, Jay knew quite a bit about pride and the community, she herself was a part of it and had been exposed to it at a relatively young age, her mum was bisexual so Jay had seen girlfriends and boyfriends come and go over the years so she had always thought it was normal. Until she had met the homophobic parents at her primary school. Yeah. It was a bit of a shocker to realize that to others it wasn't normal. Jay had been quite worried about the hate surrounding her for a while until she actually went to a pride parade.

Jay had gone to the parade with her mum last year, although that one was quite different as they had been walking on the street holding flags, not in boats. She distinctly remembered sitting on her mums shoulder as colored flags weaved and danced around them, it had been one of the best experiences of her life.

Boats is a new thing. I guess some things in the wizarding world are just different

Well obviously it would be different, she was just glad that it was happening. Jay was bisexual and hadn't really met others in the community yet. Well, to be fair she hadn't really asked them if they were or not. Jay shuddered at the thought of asking someone, that would be embarrassing.

She ran down to the Boathouse, grinning with delight as she entered and saw the decorations that had been put up, rainbows and flags everywhere the eye could see, glitter, feathers, paint, posters, streamers you name it, Jay could see it everywhere. The sun glinted off the glittery surfaces and sent colors up into the sky, coating everything in a rainbow glow.

She did a whole three sixty turn to see everything, her eyes couldn't take in all the color and shine at once, there was no way she, nor anyone who was coming today would forget this day. Breaking from her trance she remembered why she had come here in the first place.

Float making. Jay turned her hair all the colors of the rainbow, it wasn't made up of blocky colors, nor an ombre, Jay had turned up her creativity to the max and made each section of hair different colors so that they weaved through her hair, she tied it up in a messy bun, strands of colored hair going everywhere.

Jay approached the wooden boats where a few other students were decorating their own in groups, Jay recognized a few of them from class but most already had groups. Jay ended up approaching someone she didn't know yet. This girl had seemingly tried to pull the boat along and realized she might need help.

Jay tapped her on the shoulder "You need help?" The girl was tall, much taller than Jay who was wearing boots, she looked up at her, the girl had quite dark eyes, almost black, stopping her staring, Jay grabbed the top of the canoe and lifted it up so that she could drag it but almost immediately dropped it, putting her hands on her hips.

"Are we gonna move this thing?" Jay flexed her fingers slightly, the canoe was quite difficult to grip "My name's Jay and you are?"

Denisse was standing by the round windows of the Hufflepuff common room with the lanterns of the Black Lake casting a dim light. That week, Pride banners had been seen everywhere; in the corridors, in the classrooms, even on the boathouse. She didn't say much, but she had noticed.

She wasn’t sure what Pride meant for her. All the others were so confident, so loud in their colors and glitter. Denisse wasn’t loud. She was cautious and thoughtful, always looking before moving. She considered the term "identity". It sounded like something you had to declare; it sounded heavy. However, she couldn't find a statement when she gazed at herself. She saw questions. She saw curiosity. She saw someone who didn't fit neatly into the boxes everyone expects her to fit in.

Perhaps Identity wasn’t about being pompous. Perhaps it was a matter of being honest. Worthy of honesty: I don't know at this point. I have yet to discover myself.

Denisse touched a Pride poster hanging on a wall. Her fingers played upon the rainbow colors that shimmered under her touch. She smiled faintly. Tonight she didn't need to have all the answers yet about who she is. It would have been enough to be here, to observe, to stand with others. Denisse had a feeling of being at the periphery of things, watching, listening, not overbearing. That feeling followed her to Hogwarts, in the common room, in the corridors, even at celebrations. Pride week was no exception.

The boathouse was a riot of colour, laughter and glitter. Students painted boats, flagged oars and sang during the process. Denisse stood by the door, wondering whether she should be in such a noisy place.

Then she saw Dahlia struggling to maneuver a canoe, mumbling to herself and Jay spinning around, her rainbow hair catching the light. They were not concerned about fitting in exactly how they needed to be fit. They were just in it.

Denisse was hesitant, but then she stepped forward toward the three girls. She touched a jar of glitter, and had glitter dusting down her fingers. She smiled faintly. She went towards the canoe. She held onto the side, swallowing her voice and said, “Here. Let's move it together,"

In ways both literal and metaphorical, it had been hard to miss the signs. They were everywhere. In the literal sense: an explosion of color. Every color. As if a flower that only blossomed as the spring ripened into summer, signs began appearing on the various bulletin boards throughout the school. They were in the halls, in the classrooms, in the common rooms. A veritable rainbow of posters talking about a Hogwarts Pride Parade on the lake. Then, soon after those appeared, so had others, asking to band together to create the boats which would be used for the event. These too were often a maximalist bevy of brilliant, boisterous bursts of color. Were they bright? Yes. Bold? Absolutely. Beautiful? Depends who you asked, Henry thought they were. Bombastic? Precisely, but perhaps too many bs. Let's lose a curve, because more than anything, they were Proud. That was the whole point, wasn't it? Not being ashamed to be seen for who you are.

The little blue eyed muggleborn boy had grown up learning about Pride. He learned about the queer community as well, but mostly as a concept - no one in his family was anything but straight and cisgender, so far as he knew. But aside from his father's parents, the ones who were possibly still alive but whom he hadn't seen since he was three, the rest of the small tribe of Holbrooks and Joneses was very supportive of the whole endeavor. They'd even taken Henry and his older sister Helena to watch the local Pride Parade a few times when they were little. Back then, it hadn't meant much to the youngest Holbrook beyond 'pretty colors!' But those other, more metaphorical signs had started creeping in around the same time as his voice started cracking. His heart started behaving funny around some of the other boys around him. Its generally steady thumping had started fluttering in a way that made him start to wonder if maybe he was exception to his earlier notion. Maybe not all of the Holbrooks were straight, after all.

So he signed his name to one of those sheets, bearing the names of three of his fellow first years. Then, when the day of the workshop arrived, he wound his way down the path from the castle to the boathouse, which by the looks of it had been outfitted with a kaleidoscopic array of crafting supplies, along with a vast swath of food, which true to theme was also almost garish in hue. Looking around, he didn't spot any of the others from his group yet, so he grabbed a little wagon he recognized from the greenhouses and loaded it up with a few things - paint, plywood, a few canisters of glitter, tools, feather boas, streamers, more glitter, some dowels and paper and string, a bit more glitter... the kid liked glitter, ok?

His wagon filled, and topped with a plate of snacks and a bottle of butterbeer, he made his way down to the docks. Hopefully his assembled mélange of crafting supplies would be satisfactory for his team, but if they wanted other things, they could always go back for more. There certainly was enough to go around.

Henry huffed out a breath as he looked at the boat. He hadn't exactly talked out a plan with the others beforehand. But, hey, he'd spent years helping his dad fix up their house, hadn't he? Mostly the stuff that didn't require upper body strength, but still! He picked up one of the purple muffins and took a bite while he pondered his game plan, then set it down and picked up a paint brush and a can of primer. He could at least have the boat ready for his team, and it would probably be dry by the time everyone was here and they'd decided what colors to paint the thing. Or maybe they'd just douse the entire canoe in glue and pile on the glitter, he'd certainly brought enough of it.

Ophelia wasn't certain if she knew everything about the LGBTQ+ community. But she did remember seeing parades in London, sometimes when she was out with friends, and sometimes with her family. Surprisingly, her brother, now eight years old, and her parents disapproved of the community. They weren't homophobic, though; they just had their own opinions about it, which Ophelia didn't entirely understand.

The first time she heard about the community was when she was nine years old. She was at school and, naturally, overheard one of her classmates talk about her older brother, who was, in fact, gay. Ophelia didn't understand the term, if she was honest, and as curiosity took over her, she found the girl alone and asked her about it. Of course, she didn't want to seem rude, and she tried not to come off as that. The girl, Eliza, also didn't know much and had invited her to come to her house so that they both could ask her brother about this whole LGBTQ+ topic. Ophelia had agreed, since she had been to Eliza's house multiple times and somewhat knew her brother.

That's how this started. She didn't find it weird at all, though. There were men who liked men; men who liked women; women who liked men; women who liked women; men who liked both; women who liked both. Some girls were born as guys; some guys were born as girls. And she believed, no, she was completely certain, that none of this affected anyone else. So why were there people who acted like it did affect them? Didn't they all bleed the same color? Didn't the same sun shine on all of them? It reminded her of how certain people lived many years ago. Nothing had really changed, if you looked at it in this way, had it?

She didn't really participate in the parades, though, and she didn't know why. But after seeing the many decorations and the many rainbow posters all around the Hogwarts castle, she thought, why not?.

In the Boathouse, she felt... lost. She wasn't sure what to do or where to go. Best decision? Find people you know. Great. Now, looking around, three familiar faces came into view. Jay, Dahlia, and Denisse. Boats were up to four people, she realized, so she could technically join them. Except if they already had someone else who was out of her sight, but she doubted that was the case. So, naturally, she walked over to them. "Heyyy, do you guys already have someone, or can I still join?" She asked, seeing the girls trying to move a canoe, and instinctively moved to help them.
