Literature possesses a curious soul for finding the souls that need it the most. Amethyst had wandered in and out of the library countless times throughout her first year and second year that was already slipping by. She has been here for her homework, her essays and extra academic reading. Sometimes, she came just to stare into the quiet space, aimlessly. When her heart felt too heavy to carry, and the common room no longer consoled her, when she found herself missing her family and friends she no longer spoke to, her feet in a trance of their own would lead her to the library. But not until today; she had found a book whose stories had shaped her childhood. Reading it, however, felt different. As a child, Amethyst would feel excitement buzzing inside her as her mother narrated these, keen to hear what would happen next. She would be eager to understand what was right and what was wrong. Never did she ever hear those stories through the lens of the characters. |

She, for once, lost herself to the world of imagination, imagining every scene and every emotion a character must have felt vividly. Her eyes would widen in childlike glee and delight as the character in question would be able to withstand the trials of life posed on them. As if she was not aware of how it all ends. And once the story ended as it always does, she couldn't help but wonder who the writer was and what were their thoughts behind the piece they had penned. She wondered if there was a subject like that, one dedicated to stories such as these. History of Magic was close, but she wanted more. Amethyst wanted to understand emotions. The library, what a wonderful place to be. It offered peace and solace. The shelves filled with knowledge that knew no bounds, words that were still unknown to me. I couldn't wait to devour each and every book, they always had a special place in my heart. Books, they completed me, they were a part of my soul.
I always had a thing for libraries, especially circular ones like at my home. The Hogwarts library wasn't circular, but it was ginormous. I bet one could find any kind of book they wanted (except muggle ones probably). I visited everyday, whether it was for homework, or perhaps to relax and have a little me time; this was the first place I'd be in.
On a day like any other, I was roaming around between the shelves in search for something I hadn't read before. I loved fiction and usually read muggle fiction, but one couldn't find many muggle books here. I skimmed the books on the shelves till I reached the section with books about supernatural creatures. Well... technically they were supernatural for the muggles, but for us, they were pretty much real.
There were books about Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, hags, and what-not. Finally my eyes landed upon a book- Dracula by the Irish author Bram Stoker. It was a book about a vampire named Dracula. Woahhh... I didn't expect to find a muggle book here, looks like it's my lucky day.
I picked up the book, a smile dancing across my face, as I went towards a table and seated myself. I hadn't read much stories related to this genre. I opened the book in await of getting lost inside a whole new world with fascinating experiences.

With a small dimpled smile on her face, Amethyst had finished reading the book. And with that, she realised just how much she missed her home. Especially her mother's bedtime stories, and her father's games, and her grandfather's workshop. She knew the feeling of homesickness was severe when she even missed her grandmother's nagging. The young Slytherin was suddenly surprised by another girl, who seated herself across her. The said girl was equally engrossed in the book she had brought with her, like Amethyst was a few minutes ago. The cover and the title did not look familiar, and curiosity took over her. |

The book was titled Dracula, and Amethyst couldn't help but think how similar it sounded to a dragon. She tried peeking at the back cover of the book once or twice, for there was something written, but the other girl's fingers obstructed the view. Perhaps the book was about a dragon? Before curiosity killed the cat, Amethyst had quietly spoken up, careful to not disturb others. "What book is this?" she said, her eyes wide with wonder as she looked at the book. Before getting an answer, she had continued, "Is it about a dragon? I have never seen this book before. Who is the author?" Her questions were rapid. footnotes. |

I flipped the pages that felt oh so familiar even though I was reading it for the first time. I loved how books smelled, it always seemed to light something up in my mind. I was so engrossed, I hardly paid attention to my surroundings. I was startled when someone called out to me, "What book is this?" For a second I was confused if the person spoke to me. I lifted my eyes of the book to see a Slytherin girl sitting across me. Wait, was she sitting here when I came... how did I not notice. At this point, I'm probably the most vulnerable when I'm reading, I hardly ever pay attention to the people around me. Before I could reply, the girl poured out more questions rapidly. She was quite curious, fascinatingly like me, I had a habit of rapid firing questions.
I replied, "Well, this book's called Dracula, and no, it's not about a dragon. It's actually about a vampire. It's written by Bram Stoker. He's a muggle author, which is probably why you've never seen this book. It's quite a popular one amongst muggles though. I didn't really expect to find it here." My eyes wandered to the book in her hands. "What were you reading by the way? Ohh and where are my manners, I'm Avery, what's your name? Do you visit the library often?

Amethyst had not expected someone to match her energy so well. Questioning rapidly, like she did. She liked how curious the other girl was. The book was indeed a muggle book, like she fathomed. The young girl slightly lamented having talked to the girl. Relations with muggles and muggle-borns were not merely looked down upon; they were forbidden amongst the Castillos. But nobody would know if she did not tell them. Amethyst knew her grandmother well. While she was regarded as a stern and harsh personality in her mind, she would not be so cruel as to break a new-found friendship in her life. |

Moreover, when did she ever follow her grandmother's instructions? This might as well pass as the very first official revolution against her. "Vampires", she said slowly. "Interesting." She answered Avery's, as she had introduced herself, other questions. "Well, I am reading the tales of Beedle the Bard. Magical folk stories, you can say." "And I am Amethyst Castillo," she introduced after a pause. Amethyst appreciated the fact that Avery introduced herself without being asked to do so. "Tell me more about Dracula then. Is he really like the real vampires?" she asked curiously. Despite what the Castillos believed, Amethyst found muggles to be interesting. footnotes. Take your time, don't worry! |
