Hogwarts had turned into a winter wonderland over the past days, giving it a somehow etheral atmosphere. Inside the castle it had gotten a lot quieter than usual. No loud hallways, corwded tables, and the overlapping of voices. Most of the students had already gone home at the beginning of the winter holidays, celebrating christmas with their families.
And because of that the daily tension had eased out of Clark‘s body, leaving him relaxed most of the time, when he walked around the castle.
He just preferred the quietness of it.
Even the library felt calmer now, also staying untouched by loud conversations and other noises that contributed to Clark feeling overwhelmed easily. Now the only sounds that could be heared were Clarks rings giving a clinking sound whenever he turned a page, or laid his hand down onto the table.
He sat near one of the windows with several books spread around him, though he hand‘t truly been reading any of them for the past twenty minutes.
His gaze drifted lazily toward the snowfall, that happened behind the window of the library.
Most students probably missed home during the holidays. That why they were all excited to leave hogwarts for the next two weeks, just to be with the people they loved.
Clark didn‘t miss his home though.
Or maybe he simply didn‘t see a point why he should, or why he should return for holidays.
The thought settled heavily but familiarly somewhere in the back of his mind, where he stored all the memories, he didn‘t want to think about. He let his fingers go over his rings absentmindedly, occasionally twisting one.
Back home, there would be no warmth waiting for him. No excitement. No one really asking wether he had returned safely or not.
Here at hogwarts the silence felt more peaceful instead of rather empty.
A soft sigh escaped his lips, before he turned his gaze away from the window and lowered his eyes back toward the open astronomy book in the center of the books he placed on the table before. He once tried again to focus back on the constellations, that were scattered across the pages.

The least thing Clark had expected, that someone would approach the table he was sitting at. It’s not like there were multiply free tables around here in the library, deserted by the students that left for the holidays.
The voice that than spoke to him, pulled him and his thoughts away from the pages of the astronomy book he has been eyeing a long time before the person had even approached. He lifted his eyes from the Astronomy textbook, landing on the girl standing beside him.
For a moment he just simply blinked, his brain trying to accommodate the situation.
His fingers paused where they rested against the silver ring on his hand.
The girl introduced herself as Lauren, and asked if she could sit with Clark.
Clark‘s gaze briefly drifted to the empty chair opposite from him before letting his gaze shift towards Lauren again.
“Sure.“
His answer was simple yet it gave a clear answer for Laurens question, and he hoped that was enough. In addition to this Clark began to close a few books and stack them beside himself, to make Lauren room to actually feel comfortable while sitting down, and not being surrounded by the shear extent of his books on the table.
Only after a few seconds of silence, he realised that introducing himself wouldn‘t be a bad idea, because after all he knew the girl‘s name.
“Oh…and I am Clark, by the way.“, he said, while small smile plastered his lips.
After this the atmosphere around them fell into a more comfortable silent this time, and Clark let his attention naturally wander back towards the open textbook in front of him, though Clark remained polite enough not to immediately bury his nose in it again.
The silence carried on, and Clark actually enjoyed it, though he knew he should say more, because Lauren was still the one who approached him first after all, and ignoring her completely would be rude.
So after a brief hesitation, he glanced up once more.
“So what brought you to the library? Studying?“
He let it sink in before continuing his voice turning a bit quieter.
“Not many people come here during the holidays.“
And with that he fell silent again, his fingers began to turn the rings again, while he awaited Lauren‘s reaction.
