Welp it was finally happening. It hadn't been too long since she was appointed as a duelling captain for Ravenclaw. She was both nervous and excited at the same time. The opportunity to moderate a duel instead of watching it was not easy to come by and she was grateful she had the chance to do it. That still meant she was nervous about doing a good job tho.

She walked up onto the podium and looked around the room. There were so many people who had come to watch the match today. Looking down, she opened a sheet of paper with the names of the duellists for today's match. She had gone over it multiple times to ensure that she wouldn't stutter on calling out names at all. She cleared her throat before looking back up to speak with confidence.

Good day to one and all and welcome to Match 8 of this stage's duels! Alright so far so good now to introduce the teams. Today's match is the Blazing Badgers against the Viridian Vipers. She raised her hand and gestured to one side. From the Blazing Badgers, I introduce you to Edward Bishop, Verity Engels and Tatiana Contraire. After a quick round of applause she continued, gesturing towards the opposite side. And from the Viridian Vipers we have Livia Machavariani, Cassius Hirano and Esme Hestridge.

There was another round of applause before she began to go over the rules. Normally in nature, snakes eat badgers but badgers are also highly aggressive and kill snakes. However there will be none of that here today. You may only use spells, no physical attacks for the duel. No friendly fire, no illegal/unapproved spells and no potions. She between the two teams, giving them a minute to get ready.

After a minute, she smiled and moved back a little. Well then with that we begin. Ready. Set. Duel!

It was strange to come onto the piste as just a regular duellist and not a captain now. When Vera had stepped down from the position, there was certainly a weight taken off her shoulders; less pressure to perform, less expectations to meet. But it would be a total lie to say it wasn't offputting even a little bit. After all, duelling was practically her life for about half a year.

Beside her remained Tatiana from the previous stage, and there was a new face — Edward Bishop. She hoped, at the very least, that no one would freeze up. Last stage had been dreadful, and the previous stage before that had her and Amelia clawing their way out to a victory. Even if they didn't win today, Vera would be content simply having better team synergy.

Livia entered the piste for – for the first time – the most tenured of the Slytherin trio. This was not a fact she quite liked, but one could not argue with facts: it was only possible to accept them or to suffer them, so she would do the former. She knew Esme well and remained quite pleased that she still had a dear friend alongside her on the piste. Cassius, she knew less well; however, as he was a captain for the duelling team, surely he would have proven he could do well. Thus, the team may have had the ability to perform well.

Across from her stood three Hufflepuffs, two of whom she kew by name. In fact – had Verity not been the one who had refereed her first duel? Upon further inspection, this observance proved true, and Livia's stomach curdled. Nonetheless, she steeled her gaze and decided she would not let such a lapse in her competence also affect her composure.

This was it! Edward’s first official duel. He was lucky to have made it onto the team his first year at least just in time for the final rounds of dueling for the year. He was also grateful to have gotten the chance to practice prior to today, it made him a lot more confident than he probably would have otherwise been.

Nevertheless, he knew he couldn’t let down his teammates nor himself and so had to do his best so that he knew that win or lose he could be proud of his first official effort!

She sighed as she took her spot beside Verity, offering her a small smile. This was to be her second duel now, but the last of the year's as sometime this month they were to graduate. Meaning Tatiana would officially be a second year.

She sighed yet again, but now closely watching the Viridian Vipers, of whom was made up of Livia Marchiavini, Cassius Hirano, and Esme Hestrige. She took it that this match wouldn't be so different from the last one, though perhaps maybe she's hoping that this time, they were the one to win.

Esme took a deep breath as she shifted slightly on her feet. She was entering the piste for the first time officially. Though she had played at duels earlier that school year, it took quite a while for her to move up the waitlist — a fact not helped by her long deliberating on if she wanted to join it or not in the first place, swayed in different directions by her disdain for a former co-captain and affection for current duelist.

In the end, the friendship she had developed with Livia won out, and Esme had signed up. Now, Esme would smile politely to the girl as they stood by each other: she knew Livia had experience on the piste, and even then, she was simply happy to be in her company. Esme offered the sam — though more restrained — smile in greeting to the last of their trio, Cassius. She returned her gaze, then, to their opponents: three Hufflepuffs, of which she only recognised Verity. Right, she thought, straightening her back. Things would go well. She had nigh a year of studying behind her, and equally, she had nigh a year of moping about her own house.

It was time to lay those doubts to rest; hopefully, by the end of this duel, Esme would have something worth writing home about.

mentioning @Mercy King
Despite Mercy's conspicuous absence from every practise since the moment they'd signed up, Cassius's bizarre authority as duelling captain had fortunately not estranged him too much from his very best friend. In some aspects, life at Hogwarts had only emphasised the wizarding world's eccentricities—wands over welcomes and, much to their wardrobe's dismay, robes instead of clothes---but he could at least count on this aspect to remain ever-present despite their new environment. They couldn't duel together as one forever unit, but they'd walked to the duelling club together when matches were underway, and Cassius was lucky enough to enjoy the other's spectatorship at every match without fail.

And yet, it was one experience to stand and supervise others for foul play and another thing to be supervised himself. The honest truth remained: He'd bypassed the more conventional route towards proficiency, in which Cassius should have been on the duelling piste as a participant before an umpire, for it made no sense for him to have moderated his second duel—composed primarily of graduating seniors, of all demographics—an hour before his own first-hand experience. He'd prepared extensively for both roles, of course, but stepping back onto the piste with something to prove prodded at a natural competitiveness that had always been matched by his favourite attackman.

For obvious and less-obvious reasons, the duel team was nothing like lacrosse at the Blackbourne. It was just too decentralised, with many already-paired groups that naturally gravitated to each other rather than to the larger whole. Captains generally existed to give advice, not command-control strategy where they had no business. As such, despite his great desire to get along with his duellists and an open invitation to do just that, Cassius still lacked the personal connection he'd anticipated out of his captaincy.

Even now, having had exchanged more than his fair share of excited good-luck waves with Mercy in the stands, Cassius's awkward friendliness seemed well at odds with his fellow duellists' polite smiles and general professionalism. Already in position, he had meant to offer encouragement to his teammates and wish their opponents good luck, but it appeared that everyone had already exhausted their well-wishes in the months of preparation prior... If this was the custom that he'd never been privy to as moderator, he'd follow his peers' lead in good faith, and it'd be this coordination that'd hopefully connect them in struggle and success.
Action: Doing as strategised.

Afternoon Slot

As soon as she ended the countdown, the duellists immediately took their stances and began to fire spells. Fawkes moved further back as she various colours flashed in front of her.

Edward appeared to have tried to get Livia to do a little dance. Unfortunately for him she was quick enough to dodge the spell. Better luck next time she supposed.

However while Livia was lucky enough to dodge Edward, she was immediately surrounded by thick fog thanks to Verity's Nebulus. It also reached Cassius as well. Fawkes had to focus to make sure not to loose sight of them in the fog.

Tatiana was able to land a clean shot on Esme, causing her to begin doing a little dance in place which Fawkes had to admit it was rather funny.

It seems the Slytherins had it out for Verity however. The Hufflepuff had managed to dodge one cast of Incendio and a green sparks charm however she got hit from an Incredio casts sent by Esme who managed to pull it off just before the dancing started. Verity was now aflame. Wait. AFLAME??? Oh dear hopefully the burns aren't too bad....

She watched like a hawk or rather like an eagle so that she wouldn't miss the next round of spells.

2025/26 Stage 3 Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
Image posted by the member
Well, it seemed the universe heard her prayers. Once the call to start came, all three badgers raised their wands and successfully fired all their spells. Unfortunately for Edward, his spell on Livia didn't quite make its mark, but a thick fog came over the other Slytherin girl regardless from Vera's own spell. Tatiana's spell hit true, and Esme began dancing just as they'd hoped.

"Not bad." Vera hummed. She adjusted her stance. "Don't relax yet."

Soon enough, there was a wave of spells — or more like an extensive blast of fire — quickly approaching her like a volcanic eruption. Vera managed to side-step one. Then, the telltale light of a sparks spell had her shifting her gaze to the side. Unfortunately, that meant she hadn't quite stepped far enough to avoid the other Fire-Making Spell.

Vera yelped as the flames nipped close to her skin. "You have got to be kidding me," Vera grumbled, "That Gryffindor boy was already enough of a menace for this."
