Snakes and Song PV Phoenix Lyre Closed

Mars smiled broadly at Phoenix's enthusiasm. This Hufflepuff was growing on them significantly.

Humming, they picked at the songs, trying to figure out the base note for each of the chords. It wasn't terribly difficult—after all, She Used to be Mine wasn't much of a power ballad. The lyrics themselves were slow and a bit sad even, according to Urian. However, Mars had always seen it more as an honoring eulogy than a message of pure grief.

Then again, they couldn't say. They'd never had time to go watch the actual musical, just listen to the songs. They'd gone to a few musicals in their lifetime, but only the ones that Lady Estella could agree to take her entire entourage too. A musical about abuse, unwanted children, and baking pies for a living? Not really something to brag about seeing.

Mars snickered a little at the idea of the faces Estella friends would pull at some of the scenes. They had to go see it someday. Catching an easy rhythm, Mars went through a couple phrases of the song on the guitar alone, before adding in the words. They resolved to sing each verse and chorus once and then repeating it so Phoenix could follow along. They told the Hufflepuff this and started.
It's not simple to say
That most days I don't recognize me
That these shoes and this apron
That place and its patrons
Have taken more than I gave them
It's not easy to know
I'm not anything like I used be, although it's true
I was never attention's sweet center
I still remember that girl

The melody was soft and simple, easy to follow along. They repeated the verse, listening for Phoenix's voice, slowing slightly. Mars knew their voice was a little deeper than the Badger's and relished in the lower register of their range. The chords fell into place naturally as they continued.
She's imperfect, but she tries
She is good, but she lies
She is hard on herself
She is broken and won't ask for help
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine

The chorus was easy too. Mars let the lyrics sweep them up, waiting for Phoenix to follow. The grass rustled by their feet, swaying in the breeze.

[ Home, they said. I should like to go home. ]
