I had learnt two new spells in charms - Engorgio and reducio. So, I wanted to practise them. But, I had no idea what to cast it on. My eyepatch maybe? I was halfway through taking it off, when I realised that there was probably a better alternative - my book.
I took a book out of my bag, and put it in front of me, in the corridor. I pointed my wand at it, and moved it in an upper-case V shape, while saying "Reducio". My book shrank to a small size, about the size of a pendant, like the one on my necklace. I smiled, glad that I'd been able to cast the spell well.
Then, I pointed my wand at it again, and said "Engorgio." I moved my wand in a circle. Nothing happened. I sighed. I tried again, saying the incantation, and moving my wand in a semi-circle. Nothing happened. I tried multiple times, with lots of different wand movements. After what felt like hours, I felt like giving up. Nothing had happened, and my book was still tiny. At least I didn't have to go to a lesson.
I tried again, and again, ignoring the stares and mutterings of the people walking past me. So unhelpful.

It had been a perfectly normal day for Maxi, strolling across the Beauxbatons campus and just chilling. With graduation around the corner, he was especially light-hearted, looking forward to the bright future lying ahead. A Bartender might sound humble, but his ultimate goal was to take over the family vineyard - and write, of course, he figured he would find time to write. When he talked to his parents about his decision, they somehow looked amazed, but celebrated nevertheless. His mother had always known his aspiration to become an author, and Maxi suspected that his father had also perceived it, despite the distance between them when he was younger. His grandfather, on the other hand, was indifferent. Inheriting the family business had always been the one and only choice for him, so what's the point of celebration? Maxi sighed at the thought of it, but decided to put up with it. He chose the family business not to please Louis anyway, like when he seriously considered being an author and moving to Paris. He just followed the call of his heart.

He was admiring the clear sky and idly thinking about these when he heard someone repeatedly muttering the same incantation. Likely a younger student who hadn't finished their homework, he thought. Normally, Maxi walked past, leaving others to mind their own business, but somehow he stopped. Maybe as a graduating student, he was just feeling generous today, and lending a hand to a junior (they couldn't be someone in his year, could they?) was a nice way to give back.

It was a girl with flaming red hair who looked much younger than him, thankfully, and Maxi stopped and folded his arms, examining her move from yonder. The tiny thing - he squinted - a book-shaped pendant? And when he caught the incantation she had been repeating, he understood that it was probably a real book under the effect of a Shrinking Charm. They always came hand in hand, Shrinking Charm and Growing Charm. He couldn't recollect clearly which year these two spells were in, but likely below third year. It was decided. He would lend a hand.

"Need any help?" He walked up, a hint of amusement in his voice, but with good intentions, of course. More of an affective inquiry than a tease. "Failed Engorgement Charm?" She looked very diligent, attempting the spell again and again - Maxi thought to himself that he would probably give up or seek help if it were him. "If you don't mind," There were people who would mind, unfortunately, those exceptionally proud students who wouldn't allow assistance and were determined to figure it out themselves, and he did hope that she wasn't one of them, or he would be in great embarrassment and fixating on this decision all day long. "I could demonstrate. And then you'd be able to try it yourself?"

"Maxi. 7th year." He added, smiling, trying to make himself look less intimidating. "Nice to meet you."

I turned around sharply at the sound of a voice. Great. Someone had come over to see my badly cast spell.
"Yes please." I said.
The boy seemed a lot older than me - closer to an adult than a child. Although, that was good, as it meant he probably could cast spells. At least better than I could.
I nodded when he asked if it was a failed engorgement spell. Then he said that he could demonstrate, for me to try afterwards.
"That would be amazing. Thank you so much."
I stood back, so he could clearly see the book. I listened when he introduced himself. A seventh year - that meant I was correct - he was practically an adult.
"I am Cinder. Second year."
He looked quite kind for an older student - most of them just ignored me, or whispered a bit to each other, then left me. Not that it bothered me - I was perfectly happy just interacting with my year. Except the ones who only cared about their appearence.
"Nice to meet you too."
I watched him as he smiled, obviously trying to look as un-scary as possible. Didn't really matter for me.
"You know, I'm not going to be scared of you. I live around dragons. And they aren't scary."
I hoped I didn't come across too rude, I just didn't want someone to be trying to be someone different for no reason at all. That was useless.
The boy looked like he was probably from a posh family, or slightly rich, anyway.
"Sorry, I hope that wasn't rude."
I really needed him to help me.

He smiled when the younger girl accepted his offer. He wouldn't have to suffer from embarrassment today, it seemed, and Maxi breathed a sigh of relief. "Well, it is kind of difficult as a beginner..." He nodded, the corner of his lips lifting as his own memories of his school years sprang to his mind. "But, a little practice will do!" He had also stumbled through his way, being puzzled and uncertain of what to do. But as he stood close to the final door of graduation, Maxi could say that every single tear he shed and every single scar that had formed was worth it, and he was deeply grateful for every helping hand and encouraging word. He hoped that when one day the redhead mastered the spell and maybe demonstrated it to other younger students, this little session they had today could mean something to her as well.

"Hmm..." He examined the shrunk book, weighing it in his hand. Interesting size, he thought, fingers scratching the surface of it. "Enchanté, Cinder. You have a lovely name." It almost immediately connected him to her flaming hair, and he was pretty sure her family had a knack for naming babies. Chuckling as Cinder directly pointed out what was on his mind - how keen-eyed and perceptive! - and reassured him, Maxi scratched the back of his head, ruffling his neatly combed curls a bit. "Dragons are genuinely cool. What's it like?" Indeed, he would prefer to live around dragons than vines if he had the choice - just think, they created wonderful stories! - but then his grandfather would probably freak out. "And you aren't rude at all. Thank you. I really appreciate it." He liked her straightforwardness and sincerity. It seemed that it was right for him to accidentally stop today. "Let's see -" Maxi drew his trusted black walnut wand out, twirling this magical artefact which belonged to his late grandmother with his fingers, before pointing the tip at the book. "Engorgio!"

engorgement charm - y2 spell avg. wis dc: 10.
[d20 : 10] + 16 = 26 > 10 -> success!

Maxi spoke the incantation more clearly and slowly than he would usually opt to, almost always hastily mumbling them in broom races or during class. He was glad to see that the book went back to its original size. It wasn't an exceptional performance, ordinary, he might say, but for a seventh year, even a commonplace performance was enough for a lower year spell like this one. Maxi turned to the girl, steel grey eyes softening with kindness. "Well? What do you think? Do you think you can figure it out yourself now?" Lots of questions, indeed, and he hoped he wasn't posing as pushy. Maxi again smiled a little. "Would you like to give it a try? Here -" Pointing his wand at the normal sized book, he muttered a quick "Reducio," this time purely in his own, Maxi way, and not at all demonstratively.

shrinking charm - y2 spell avg. wis dc: 10.
[d20 : 7] + 16 = 23 > 10 -> success!

Maybe he was too rushed to outperform the growing charm. But still, as said, he had already grasped the essence of the spell ages ago, and he was so proficient that he would almost never fail these lower year spells. Maxi looked at Cinder expectantly. Hopefully, he was an adequate instructor.

ooc: sorry for how long this took!
