Avery mindlessly walked down the hallways as she always did. There was just something about exploring the same halls she had walked for the past couple years. Every time something new came into the light. Something beautiful or even something dangerous. She knew well that many secret passages lay within the walls of Hogwarts. It just took time and care to search for them. But today was not one of those days of searching. Today, well, Avery needed an escape. Her thoughts had been. . . suffocating. Ever since she had become a second year, everything had become more real.

She knew something was wrong within her family. The darkness was creeping closer and closer with every moment. Her grandfather was not getting better. Avery knew that to be the truth regardless of what he and the rest of her family said. A storm was brewing in the walls of her home and family and all she could do was stand aside and watch as her world began to crash around her. Her world had already fallen once. Could it all fall down again, but this time be much more?

Avery knew that was always a possibility. The first time her world had crumbled she thought she had lost everything, but now she was afraid. If things had been so bad the first time, how much worse would they become the second time? What would she lose as she watched her world burn and crumble into bits of dust? Would she survive, or would she fall to the dirt like everyone else that hit rock bottom and lost everything? That pain. She shivered. The pain she could feel deep in her bones from her mother's rejection. That wound was still raw. Her mother had disappeared from her life, but at least she still had her grandparents. They loved and cared for her more than her actual parents ever could.

What would she do if she lost those sweet memories of her family? The good times like when her mother and father had taken her on picnics. Or the times when she used to walk through the woods with her grandfather learning about every plant and creature that lay within. Those were the good times. Far from the dark storm clouds now looming above her head. Threatening to drop rain at any moment.

Avery had not realized she had stopped in the middle of the corridor. She was so overcome by her grief at the thought of losing the one good thing in her life that she had stopped. Avery forced herself to begin walking again. She had to keep going. Just like she had to keep pushing herself to keep going in her own life. She knew it would be far from easy, and little gain would be established. Though it was worth it. She was loved, she was alive, she was breathing. She needed to be thankful for what she did have. She could not just dwell on the bad things. They would just destroy her.

Avery thought she was the only person in the corridor. At first, it had seemed that way. That was not the case. In a matter of moments she had collided with something. A body. She had run into someone. Again.

"I'm so sorry. Are you alright?" Avery questioned as she looked up and saw a girl she recognized as one of her fellow second years lions. The lioness tilted her head slightly. She couldn't quite place a name to the girl. She just knew that they were housemates.

Avery kicked herself internally. She had been so caught up again in her own thoughts that she had disregarded making sure no one else was around. What was it with her and always running into people? Someday it would end badly for her. Avery winced. That would not be a great day. She couldn't stand hurting people. Even dueling was pushing her more than she wanted, but in dueling it was her duty to lead her team to victory. That was why she left the gruesome sport to her cousin, Dylan. He was the strong one. The one who could handle pretty much anything that came into his path. Even other people.
