𝕾talking was an unmeasurably strong choice of word.

Observing would be leaning towards what would be accepted as an appropriate description, though the raven had firmly resolved not to let labels intimidate her from her current activity. Standing the birth of the spiral set of stairs climbing its way into the heart of the north tower, she stared at the fleeting end of a cape disappearing around the corner. One hand on the railing, one foot hoovering over the first step, the moon-eyed hesitated. An hour ago she had, as usual, stumbled upon the sixth year within the comforting halls of the library — a heavy tome clasping shut beneath his hand, ice-like features displayed an impressive picture of resolution, as though neither elemental disaster nor the end of the world they knew could prevent him from going where he indented. Then again, he always displayed a sense of determination falling into such a range of emotion. Composed, serene, diligent — a vast array of words could perfectly capture the persona he embodied each passing day, one the raven had been so quick to categorize as self-righteous.

Yet flaws lurked under the surface, an insatiable curiosity clashing with her own, both covering the deepest corners of their minds with a defensive wing while eyeing the other's swirling secrets. A dance, almost, a deadly one. For as much as the raven tensed whenever he 'unexpectedly appeared', storm-tossed eyes glimmered with interest whenever he let the carefully crafted mask he constantly displayed slip. And for some reason, his unwanted care for her perfectly normal condition highlighted cracks within his surface. Unfortunately, he was exceptionally clever and pierced right through her careful tiptoeing around his frame, informing her without a single word spoken that if she wanted a taste of what lurked within his head, she had to lose a few feathers.

Which is precisely why she was currently staring at a disappearing figure in the dusk, pondering whether she should voluntarily pluck some off her own wings and dive into the eagle's nest, or chose safety over curiosity and pivote on her feet. Cons and pros, advantages and disadvantages — a game of chess, where she had started with a handicap. The reason why each of her limbs screamed at her to flee each time he approached was the very same that kept her awake at night, the very same that caused that terrible pit in her stomach whenever someone inched closer to unraveling the threads guarding the deepest areas of her mind. He had witnessed something he shouldn't have, and now each time his unique eye settled upon her it was a painful reminder of the unspoken burden she was carrying. She loathed it.

Should her heart not carry such hatred for the one who had seen the unseeable, the raven would have truly adored the snow-like sea eagle, odd creature with a mechanical eye and too-accurate retorts. His mind appeared a true universe of storms and unruly oceans, something fierce and oh-so interesting to decipher, one in strange ways, similar to her own. Without thinking then, curiosity overtook the fear rooting her to the ground, and up she climbed. There wasn't a world in which he hadn't spotted her prowling, thus she knew where his trail would lead. Climbing yet another set of stairs, she emerged in the divination classroom, one she had not yet had the pleasure of attending.

Pericles Dralt had grown a second shadow. Unlike the original, this one kept distance from him, peeking around corners and casting fleeting glances. Even when she perched alongside him at the breakfast table, their interactions rarely progressed past a polite "Good morning" on his end. Peri was mindful of when he acknowledged Elena in full, as if to do so was to banish the darkling with a beam of pure sunlight. She was a skittish thing. In the same way one earns the tentative trust of a wild cat, Pericles played the long game, rewarding Elena's acts of social bravery with welcoming smiles and You're allowed to be here too looks. When she didn't want to be seen, he typically pretended not to notice her. One could only be so subtle when they spent an hour trailing someone.

His work in the library was the second phase of a research effort, the first having occurred the night before in the tallest tower. Pericles had once again capitalized on his role as an astronomy intern to scour the heavens. He arrived at a table with an armload of hand-drawn star charts: planets, constellations, and the overall machination of their universe reduced to tools for his personal divinement. The eagle seemed to be searching for something. He halfway encircled himself in open tomes and charts, cross-referencing last night's findings with the guidance of long-dead wizards. In his focus, the mask of composure slipped over time, face slackening as the world beyond those shelves faded into backdrop. Pear's mouth sagged into a lopsided line, while his brow knit into a faint but consistent pinch. The answers he sought danced just beyond his periphery of understanding. Dissatisfied, yet determined, the mage raised splayed fingers with a whispered "Accio Atlas of Celestial Anomalies." He looked to be too absorbed with writing to track down the book on his own. This shortcut, rather than saving Pear time in the library, would instead bring his visit to an end. There ensued the distant sound of fluttering pages as a book hurled itself through the halls. Someone yelped as it careened around a corner and missed them by a hand, their indignant cry breaking the silence: "Who's Accio-ing in the library?!"

Pericles' scowl lifted as his concentration shattered. He returned to himself, glancing in the direction of the voice with an empty, calculating kind of look. The atlas landed in his hand with a thunk and was immediately deposited into a satchel, which Pear passed a palm over, incanting "Pack." A blur of parchment later, his hazardous array of notes were neatly filed away. He wasn't interested in dealing with whatever admonishments were headed his way. The Ravenclaw slung his bookbag, pushed in his chair, and strode off from the desk towards the door. He feigned not noticing a flash of star-spun gold disappearing behind a statue, a surefire clue that his shadow was nearby. Instead, he ignored the feeling of being followed all the way to the North Tower. Pericles' organized chaos reformed on a table in the Divination classroom, joined by a few choice books from the professor's shelves. A spread of astronomy, astrology, and divination lay before him, subjects intersecting and overlapping in obtuse layers. Multicolored lights filtered through the stained glass windows, bathing his work in the ocean's palette. Elena seemed a young heroine consulting an Atlantian seer, stepping into the sea of silver and aquamarine, absorbed by the room's underwater ambiance. She was met with a flicker of surprise which quickly transitioned into a trademark smile. "Fine timing. I've just set up," Pericles assured, as though he'd been expecting her. His hands splayed towards the seat opposite his own. "You came for a reading, didn't you?" Because why else would a Second Year, who didn't yet qualify for Divination, have trailed him all this way?

𝕮ards were an odd way of predicting one's destiny.

Elena was a daughter of the moon, spun from silver rays and brought to life by mist — a deep belief in the universe was woven in her veins. Her blood was night-lit ocean, her lungs clouds, and at the end of her universe, her body will return to stardust. Honouring the moon and stars, learning to read the intricate patterns of the skies above, respecting the planets and their sign. Spirituality was at her core, delicately interlinked with her love and faith in humanity.

Thus, the reason of the tension settling iron claws over her shoulders were not the fruit of a disbelief in cards, in divination and signs the universe could send, but a fear of it. For as long as she could remember, her eyes had averted from tarot, fingers shaken as she nervously declined a well-intentioned divinator in a local fair ; closed horoscopes when reaching her sign ; avoided learning the language through which time spoken and its symbols. Her present had been so rooted in fear she had no desire to uncover a future whose horizon was already darkened.

Once, as a child, she had sat through a reading. The cards she had flipped she could not recall, yet the words that had echoed throughout the room still lingered in a corner of her head. Nightmares, madness, loss. For the first time in years she had confided in the imposing women, timidly admitting to suffer recurring nightmares and visions, which frightened her. The verdict was immediate, sword of damocles swung towards her neck — those visions would become reality, her mind would succumb to madness and in this madness a loved one will lose its life, at her hands. foreshadowing foreshadowinggg Circling back, this woman likely had a particular loathing for children and had wished to scare her, but the sentence had remained imprinted on the back of her eyelids ever since.

Pushing the door open felt like stepping through a portal. Pericles stood regal behind a table, parchments and tomes scattered throughout the room — a kingdom, a domain, one he was welcoming her into. Immobile and serene, the sea eagle and its mechanical eyes were fixed, as still as the moon rising in the night. The tiny raven hesitantly stepped inside, fascinated by the patterns adorning the walls of the room, and by the atmosphere thick with incense floating around them. An Ocean. Hues of blue, cerulean and turquoise illuminated his work, projecting peculiar shadows on the curve of celestial bodies and constellations.

A finger trailing over the design of one, feeling the uneven surface under her fingertips, she raised eyes once more, head tilting to a side. "Planets will align in a few days," voice rising like the smoke of an extinguished candle. "Will you observe them?" Not a rare event, but still. At least four members of the solar system will align paths in one or two days, offering a display worthy of admiration. Or interpretation, as they were standing here.

"You came for a reading, didn't you?"

A frown creased the flesh between her brows. Why was she here, indeed? What had she hoped to achieve in obeying this second nature that pushed her to carefully follow the elder bird? Answers, would be the first thing that came to her mind. Answers to which questions, was another interrogation. Curiosity was another one of her drives, but curiosity was merely a string of unanswered questions.

Who are you? — what lied beneath the polished mask he displayed, what obscurities swirled beneath his mind? What do you want? — his intentions, though crystal clear, remained blurry to the golden haired girl, trust remaining stuck in her throat. Do you like me? — she. would never utter it aloud and yet it leaked through every interaction with her peers. Do you like me? Am I likeable to you? Am I standing correctly? Am I saying what you want me to hear? Do you like me? Is the version of yourself I am reflecting back to you what you wanted? Do you like me? Does he like her, despite catching a glimpse of what swirled beneath her own surface? Could she allow her guard to lower, even for a second? Can I trust you with a burden I've been carrying before my birth?

"I came for," she hesitated, tearing her gaze from the floor to dive it into both — real and machine — eyes, "I came for answers. Is that something you could give me?
