Timeline: Between the time Zephyr was made Broom Racer and before Spring Ball

Until now, whenever somebody would congratulate him regarding his new title, it still feels strange in his head. Hufflepuff Broom Racer. It’s not just some reserved player or waitlisted, but an actual racer. But with the new title comes with expectations too. It comes with responsibility. People would be watching him during practices instead of just letting him fool around on a broom because he liked flying fast. He also brought his new broom with him, excited to try it during practice. When he first received it, it nearly made him lose his mind. The polished handle was gleaming under the sunlight and it’s smoother than anything he had ever flown before! Amazing!

When he first went shopping for his school supplies with is dad, he already saw this particular broom from the shop window and when his dad explained how important brooms are in wizarding sports, he wanted to have one himself. But he was also fully aware it cost far more than his family could comfortably afford. Apparently his dad had been keeping from him, he actually paid for half as soon as he learned he made the racing team, and the rest came from the team. It only added to his inspiration to work harder and so he did. Flying practice had become harder recently and it was his own decision, sometimes he would request his teammates whenever they have time. He focused on actual racing drills. Precision dives, endurance laps and sudden stop and turn drills to improve control during obstacle heavy tracks. The stamina training was brutal his muscles were aching for a few days.

He dragged Max into it the second he found free time. What started as a leisurely fly between friends lasted only five minutes before it turned competitive. "Bet I can finish ten laps before you…" he started as a challenge and what happened after that was a mess of reckless speed, sharp overtakes, and yelling across the race track whenever one of them would finish a lap. They raced full laps around the area and spent a solid fifteen minutes trying to outdo each other with sudden dives and speed. The broom racing grounds gave them a challenge of its own, it’s one of the strangest places he had ever seen at Hogwarts. This part of the grounds seemed alive because the land would shift whenever it pleased. When he first learned about that, he thought that was what made the place brilliant. No race ever stayed the same.

After an hour of practice, both of them were sweating and breathing harder. He laughed and waved at Max to get his attention. "Let’s have a break before one of us falls due to exhaustion." He went to the wooden bleachers as soon as he landed and reached for the water bottle. The cool water felt incredible after flying under direct sunlight for that long. "The weather’s getting warmer…" He commented after a long drink, and reached for his face towel to wipe the sweat off his face. "Nice change actually, I was getting tired of freezing every morning." Taking a seat, a grin beginning to form as a dangerous topic came to mind because of the upcoming event. "So, Spring Ball, who are you going with then?" Everyone’s going crazy about it that he was curious if Max had plans of his own. He would be going with the rest of the group.

Being a part of the quidditch team, that was his goal pretty much since the first of September. He had worked tirelessly for it too, in his own opinion. So much so that it would only be understandable if the entire team was sick of seeing him. Asking questions, talking tactics, discussing brooms. He loved every minute of it, and had attended every game so far. Only just before Christmas did it strike him that he should perhaps work on his skills as well.

Convincing his parents to let him bring his Da’s old broom to school was not easy. Somehow harder than the talk they had about letting him attend Hogwarts. He didn’t really get it. A broom should be used, and what better use was there? The concern of him hurting himself somehow with the boost in speed and maneuvering met deaf ears. So he got his will at last. He had flown close to every day since then. Braving colder temperatures and more wind than he probably should, his determination was endless.

When his buddy Zeph got a spot on Hufflepuffs broom racing team, he was almost green with jealousy. Only the instinct of genuinely wanting his friend to do well stopped a whole spiral. At least Zeph didn’t take his spot. And they were playing different sports. So when it was suggested that they fly together, he happily agreed. Who knew, perhaps he could even pick up a trick or two.

What started as an easy flight turned competitive. How could it not, with the two of them. «You will eat my dust, Deakin!» He cackled as they both set off. Round after round, before dips and dives followed, both trying to outdo the other. This was the life. Someone should make «race your friend» into an official sport. Max could think of nothing better.

By the time they stepped off their brooms, sweaty and a bit short of breath, Max was smiling so wide his face hurt. Classes could never outcompete this. He would much rather do this for six hours, five days a week. He slung his broom over his shoulder as he crossed the few steps separating him from the wooden bleachers. Putting it down carefully, he slung himself on the bench and grabbed his own bottle of water. Swallowing a few mouthfuls, he poured a bit over his head too. The sun seemed to finally have won the yearly battle against king winter, and was blissfully warming. Still, the coolness of the water was more than welcome.

«Yeah, spring is definitely here. But we might still get another snowfall or two before winter leaves us» He shrugged a bit and leaned back, supported by the bleacher above. «It will be good not worrying ofer losing body parts because of frostbite or something though!» He had never experienced it himself, but the tales told by his Da was more than horrifying enough to vividly imagine.

Upon the mention of the spring ball, Max almost swallowed wrong as he took another mouthful of water. «The ball? Oh, uhm… I don’t know really» He tried to pull of a nonchalant shrug while he felt his face heat. It was an obvious lie. He never was the best lier, but at least he had stopped stuttering as much. «Julia» He admitted with a bit of a smile. «But there will be plenty of people there, so probably loads of others too!» He added in a hurry.

The situation with Jules was complicated. He didn’t really know why his stomach felt so strange every time she was around, or apparently also when he thought of her. Needing the attention to not be solely on him, he fired the question back at him, a bit too desperate to add the usually confident grin. «Who are you going with then? I know plenty of people have yet to make plans.» People had truly been going crazy, trying to find dates or a group to go with. He didn’t really get it. He would be there, Jules would be there. It was only natural that they hung out.

Even after climbing off the broom, Zephyr could still feel as if the speed had not fully left his body yet. His heartbeat was pounding against his chest from the adrenaline of their competition. There was sweat sticking to his nape and his arms were aching, oddly in a satisfying way after pushing himself too far on with good purpose. Those sharp turns and reckless drive they did stayed in his muscles he could feel the phantom pull of the broom in his palm while already sitting there. He loved every minute of it.

There was something addictive about flying against someone especially it's with someone who has the same passion as him and who can keep up with the competition. Some people would warn him to slow down or stop any of his attempts before he break his neck but with Max, the guy was possibly crazier than him, he encouraged it more. Every time he would push harder, the guy would do the same or maybe even more, which turned the entire thing into a chaotic contest of pride and crazy decisions. That gave him unexplainable exhilaration. The grin that marred his lips left his face hurting from smiling too much afterward.

Their conversation shifted toward the Spring Ball, and for some odd reason, there was a change in Max's expression. If he was not mistaken, the other boy was hesitant, or maybe feeling awkward? He was not sure if it's because of the ball topic or because of his question of who he's going with. Especially when he mentioned the name he was most familiar with. And wasn't that a smile he saw just now? If he would believe what he just witness, he would even say he noticed the light flush in his face together with that smile. Hmm.. curious...and suspicious.

He had to bite the inside of his cheek to stop himself from laughing. "Julia?" His grin widened with unmistakable menace. "Interesting..." Funny how Max could throw himself off a broom at absurd speeds without blinking, but mentioning one girl suddenly made him awkward. He even hurriedly explained there will be others at the ball too, look at him panic easily. "Did you ask her to go to the ball with you? How did you even do that?" He asked as he reached for his water bottle again, "Like a...you know...a date." That's how the older students call it right? When you ask someone to the ball?

While waiting for his response, he leaned against the bleachers and tilted his head toward the sky, just staring there for a moment. In truth, he hadn't thought much about the ball beyond the fact he would probably end up there somehow. Everybody was making it as something monumental event when half the school would likely spend the evening pretending not to stare at whoever they fancied. "I’m probably just going with our group." Some people approached him about it but at that time, he was not really that interested to attend. For him, it's just a simple dance and since he's someone who's not into dancing, he knew he would just get bored easily there if he stayed.

He had enough pressure already between racing practices and classes, stressing over a ball seemed farfetched for him and unnecessary. Besides, he really liked the idea of going with friends better, there was no expectations and no awkwardness like what Max's doing now. Poor boy. He wondered what Julia ever did. Looking at Max again, his amusement returning. "If you spend the entire ball following Julia around like a lost puppy, I’m making fun of you for the rest of the year." You can bet on it!

Why did his cheeks have to get so red? He could curse the heat for giving away what he had yet to fully realize for himself. On top of that he could curse himself for being in this situation in the first place. He also sort of felt like making a profane gesture at Zeph for wearing that teasing smirk. He did neither, at least not yet.

He took another mouthful of water to give himself time to think. He wasn’t really sure what he and Julia were. They were friends for sure, that he knew. But when he was with her he was scared of looking like a fool. He felt nothing like it when he was around his other friends. He couldn’t really put his finger on what it was. He had asked her to the ball because it felt like the natural thing to do. In his mind it had been nothing more than a «Hey, we’re both going so why not meet up there?» type of thing.

He swallowed slowly before nodding with a bit of a smile. «Yeah, Julia» He suddenly felt a bit silly saying her name. He had never talked girls with Zephyr before, why would they? And yet, here they were. To attempt to cover the awkwardness he gave a playful shove. «No, not like a date! We’re just both going to be there, so we’ll hang out!» That sounded good right? Sure. Completely.

Dating was something the older students did. He had caught on that much. But this was nothing like that. He had no plans whatsoever to hold hands or any of the stuff people normally did on dates. Him asking Julia to go with him to the ball was nothing different than if he’d asked Zeph, or any of their other friends. That is what he chose to tell himself at least.

Hearing his buddy was going with a group, he felt sort of stupid. Why hadn’t he thought of that? He had just imagined that they would all meet up there and hang together. Only that he would make sure to include Jules too. He caught himself wondering if this meant he couldn’t hang with his other friends at the ball after all. The thought was equally concerning and intriguing. Concerning because he really didn’t want to miss anything, and their mates always had a good time. It was intriguing at the same time because the prospect of spending the entire night with just Jules made his stomach do backflips.

He was saved from his thought spiral by Zeph’s next comment, and he laughed. «Thanks, but there’s no chance of that happening!» Shaking his head he chuckled a bit more. «If you think I’m leaving the rest of you alone at the snack table, you my friend is sorely mistaken!»

Silence settled for a moment while he fiddled with the water bottle. There was a question still on his mind, he just didn’t quite know how to voice it. «…so there’s not anyone you want to make sure is there then?» The question slipped out before he realized he had opened his mouth. Just typical. So he did what he did best: scrambled to cover it. «Like you’re not sure you want to spend the night with them or anything, but if they didn’t show up it would be sort of a letdown?» Did that clarification make things less awkward? No, definitely not. Out of options now that he had voiced it, he opted for dragging a hand through his hair and letting out an awkward chuckle.

Zephyr didn’t miss the way Max’s cheeks went red and that alone told him everything he needed to know. His amusement only double upon seeing his buddy's reaction. Sooo.. it was like that. Not to embarrass him further, he took another sip of his water and pretended he was just watching the field but he was just really letting Max dig his own hole in peace. The shove made him snort, though he hardly moved from the impact. His grin only widened at this little revelation of his. “Uh...huh, suuuure." Dragging the word for emphasis, "...not like a date.” he was surely entertained.

Leaning back on his elbows, his eyes shifted sideways at him. “Who are you trying to convince, me or yourself? You should know your face is all red man. Why is it that a lot of people I've encountered, girls specially, have been blushing while talking to me. I don't get it.” The silence that followed was basically confirmation in his book. "Look, I don't care what you wanna call it, date, group thing, not a date, friendly date, there's nothing wrong with that. Just enjoy your time with her." Just be ready to be teased by our group, he thought, but he didn't say it out loud.

He stretched his arms up behind his head while his gaze was still focused on the sky. “No chance, eh? And here I thought you have a crush on her.” His amusement leaking in his voice again. "Oh I know you'll still talk to us but I'll also say you'd probably end up glued to Julia the entire time.” He stopped himself before saying anything more. It might also be possible his friend would mess with him for the rest of the week if he would not stop teasing him about Julia.

His question buffered in his head that his expression went blank for a while. What? It took him some time to fully comprehend what he was asking him. "Is that your way of asking me if I have a crush?" His brow lifting and his smirk appearing again. In the end, he shrugged, "I don’t know. Initially I was not planning to go. It's just not my thing but I promised my parents I'll enjoy it, even sent me my tux by now.” He admitted, his teasing tone was gone now. “I'm happy just having our group there.” It's enough. "Why are you asking? Is that ball sort of requiring us to get a partner or something?" He needed to know just in case he's missing the whole point of that event. At this point in his life, he's still completely naive and oblivious of people liking him or wanting to spend some time with him.
