Laying in the middle of the ballroom floor, she stares up at the ceiling with the same question in her mind. Why? Why the hell would her father Matthew start screwing another women after she was born. He doesn't deserve the title of father from anyone. Even his little not so secret, secret. The fury fills her up and the pain destroys her fro inside out. She was hoping that maybe the other women (who she learned was Liliana Jackwood) had a daughter with another man. Maybe, just maybe, this girl wasn't Matthews daughter. But all hope was demolished when she laid eyes on her. Thanks to Flame Afterglow, the young first who helped her find this child, she found out that she was a hundred percent his daughter. The girl had Matthews eyes, lips and smile. When she smiled or laugh, her eyes crinkled in the corner like her father. Her British accent was a direct female copy of Matthews. Hatred overtakes her as she thinks of this. How proud must her father be when he heard this girl made Slytherin too.

More questions flood her mind as she thought of it more. Does the girl, or she suppose Anna, run in morning too? Does she wake up every morning before the sun comes up to run? And if so was it Matthew that had her start running? Did he show her the meteor showers and send her letters telling Anna when they are? Every shared and touching moment her father had with Bree, did he redo them with Anna? make them better?

Silent tears fall down her face as this poison swirls in her head. She didn't realize she was crying until she felt the wetness of her cheeks. Wiping her cheeks, the tears continue to fall. No matter how hard she tried not to cry, the pain, hurt and anger continued the flow. She hadn't allowed herself to cry once since the funeral. Thinking of the funeral, her fathers face flashes into her mind after Marc mentions his affair.

He didn't show any denial. His face showed the truth. When she studied his face for any denial, and shame, any feeling that showed He cared, her heart broke when she got none. He didn't even say a single word. He just walked out. And that traitor still lives with her mother. Her mother didn't deserve any of this! Bree made that known to both of them. Her last words, before she left for Hogwarts again were filled with hate.

Slowly and with much determination, her map was being filled in. It was an endeavour that had taken her the greater part of the school year โ€“ it now being March โ€“ and Poppy knew that there were still many corridors she'd never even seen. Despite that, her little makeshift guide was coming along nicely. Where she could, Poppy had tried to add pictures to help her reference the spots later. There was a part of the little girl that knew once she was more familiar with the place (within another year at most) it would all become redundant, but she couldn't help thinking it might make a fond memory she could share.

Of the seven children born to Allistair and Celeste Grimsbane, she was the only one who'd been coated and marked with the magical and horrifying. From her very first day she'd entered the castle, Poppy had been mesmerised. It was scary and terrifying and overwhelming, but in the midst of all that, it had also been...awe-inspiring.

It didn't take her long to understand that it was something her brothers and sisters would never be able to experience for themselves. Long after she no longer needed the map to tell her the way to Defense Against the Dark Arts or the fastest way to the Great Hall, she would keep the scrapbook and let them see for themselves this wonderful world she was slowly giving herself permission to participate in. The only stumbling block to such sentiment was the fact her parents might not like her sharing such things, but she'd cross that bridge when she got there, choosing to continue believing that things wouldn't always be this way.

Poppy followed the corridor for some time, making little jottings as she did. It was all new to her which forced her to take the walk slowly. The girl didn't mind, though. She preferred taking it all in with some degree of leisure.

Then she saw the door.

Poppy was learning that doors were as often opened as they were closed, and having learned the unlocking charm, not much gave her trouble unless it was properly warded. More often than not, it was just an odd broom closet or some now-disused classroom, but sometimes, they opened into something far more interesting.

As she approached the door, she wondered which it would be. The Gryffindor placed her hand on the door's knob, satisfied when it swung open to reveal...

...

"Whoa..."

Poppy cautiously drifted further in, her neck craned as blue-green eyes lifted to the chandeliers and the many floating lights. They were dim, likely a function of the room not being used, but that created its own sombre reverence that had her holding her breath. The portraits were massive and every bit as elegant, creating a picture of what the place could look like once something fancy was given a fair shot.

Her awe was interrupted when she noticed the figure in the centre of the room.

"Sโ€”Sorry!" she quickly scrambled to offer. She took a measured step back, realising too late that she was intruding. "I...I didn't know there was anyone else in here..." And now that she did, she couldn't imagine why. It was evident that the space wasn't in any official use, but the girl lay there all the same. "I can...I can come back โ€“ actually, I only need a few pictures for my โ€“ never mind, you... that's not important. Iโ€”are you alright?"

Somewhere in the middle of the rambling that had gotten away from her, Poppy noticed the way the girl's face glistened in the low light.

Without thinking about it, her feet drove her in the direction opposite her retreat. "It's...I don't know what happened, but...but it'll be alright."

Laying there is self pity and despair, she didn't hear someone walk in. Honestly, they could've stood there for hours and she wouldn't have noticed. The continuous wave of hurt, anger and sadness continue to wash over her as she laid there. At least it was quiet and-

"Sโ€”Sorry! I...I didn't know there was anyone else in here..."

Sitting up quick, she wipes her face. Her heart was racing hard. The girl continued to stutter her way through the rest of whatever she was saying. Wiping her face once more, she finally stands up. "It's fine! Just um do what you gotta do. I'm.... I'm fine" Brushing off her clothes, Bree sighs. Of course the one time she was having a moment somebody had to come in. Taking in the girl, she watches her face to see any sort of judgment. All she was able to get from this girl was panic. The girl was still rambling. Somehow, the girl noticed that Bree was crying. Either from the wetness of her face when she first got in her or the contrast of the red puffy eyes against her natural pale skin. The younger girl tried to tell her it's alright.

Scoffing, she avoids eye contact. Alright? Alright? Nothing will be alright. Her whole entire family is falling apart. No man in his right mind would cheat on a woman for so long and even have a kid with her. Letting out a heavy breath, her chocolate eyes meets the girls blue ones.

"Nothing will be alright right now. Unless what happened was just me hallucinating, then nothing will be 'alright.' " Running a hand through her hair, she looks up at the ceiling, "From what I got, some secrets don't die with the person who knows them. They come out instead."

Looking back at her, she offers a sad smile, "And sometimes they hurt more than you'd think." Sighing softly once more, she looks around the room. Everything was so beautiful in this room while everything was so ugly out there. Fathers who cheated on mothers and have more than one family. Looking at the other girl, she spots a camera in her hand. Bree hasn't seen one of those in a hot minute.

"You like to take pictures?" Nodding towards the camera she continues, "If you don't mind me asking, why exactly did you say you needed the pictures of the ballroom?"

The voice anchored Persephone to something outside of her own panic. It was familiar in the dimly lit room, causing her to realise that she hadn't stumbled on a stranger in any real sense of the word. Bree. Her housemate. Covering so much of the school year already, Poppy felt confident in the thought that she knew all โ€“ if not most โ€“ of her housemates. It was a natural consequence of sharing a common room for so long.

Sometimes, it amazed her how such a large group of children with no connection to her could become a part of what made the towers so comfortable. On long days when she was feeling particularly alone and out of place, Poppy liked to sit up there on the rug and listen to what everyone had been up to. Sometimes, all it took was losing herself in the stories of others to clear the fog that tried to keep her in.

Bree wasn't her friend. They hadn't had any meaningful interaction with the girl being in the year above her and revolving around her own group of friends, but seeing her marginally concealed sorrow, Poppy somehow felt...responsible.

It didn't make logical sense. The first year was well aware she wasn't the one who'd banished her housemate to the darkened room to drown alone in despair, yet...it tugged at her insides all the same, stirring her despite her ignorance of what action might be best.

Bree's scoffing had her face going a lighter shade of crimson, embarrassment doubling back to take a second swing at her.

Telling someone that everything would be alright without knowing what had caused the distress was a rudimentary form of failure that she should've been long past. Of course, it wouldn't make a difference. Why had she ever thought it would?

"Nothing will be alright right now. Unless what happened was just me hallucinating, then nothing will be 'alright.' "

"Iโ€“nโ€“no, you're right. I justโ€“it'sโ€“that was a stupid thing for me to say. I...I know it won't be alright โ€“ at least โ€“ I don't mean...I just...I guess I don't know enough to make a promise like that." Someday her mouth would learn not to run ahead of her brain. Until then, the mortifying struggle continued.

It might have been safer not to speak, a thing that became easier when Bree went on to speak about secrets and hurt.

"...Oh." was all she could say at first, her voice barely above a whisper. It all seemed so much bigger than her and anything she might have been able to comprehend, but Poppy's heart hurt no less for that. At the same time, the girl couldn't help the rising tide of confusion that pulled her further underneath with each new admission...observation that her company made.

Her mouth hung open for several silent moments; the words were uncertain that there was a place for them in this large, empty room. She didn't want to risk putting her foot in her mouth a second time and offending the older girl. While she grappled with the decision, her eyes scanned the room the way Bree's did, hers in desperate search for something she could mention.

There was nothing.

"I...well..." The warmth that had settled on her face spread out toward her ears and down her neck. "Sometimes it โ€“ it helps if you talk about it."

"You like to take pictures? If you don't mind me asking, why exactly did you say you needed the pictures of the ballroom?"

Hm?

Herโ€“Oh!

"I...I'm making aโ€“a map of the castle. Sometimes...sometimes I still take a wrong turn on less familiar routes. And...and...I wanted to have some way of letting my siblings see the castle. Nโ€“None of them have ever seen aโ€“anything like this."
