The air in the Great Hall felt warmer than usual as Garnet Gem followed the other first years into the large room. Garnet couldn't keep their mouth closed, it constantly fell open wth every new thing they spied. First, it was the floating candles drifting lazily in the air. Then they looked farther and gasped. There is no way! That's the sky! How is this possible? Their mind answered the question a moment later. Magic.

They still couldn't believe magic was real, and, even more impossibly, they were magical themself. They barely registered their trip to the front of the room; they and the other first years paraded through the middle of the giant space. They stopped short when the student in front of them stopped, almost running into them in their distraction.

This is my school now. This is my new life! Dispite themself, they couldn't help but feel giddy at the dawning of this information. Swaying slightly back and forth, they did their best to stay stoic on the outside. But soon their thoughts were interrupted as a man, the Headmaster, began to speak.

Listening intently, their heart dropped. A sorting? What does he mean? Then the hat began to speak, and Garnet gasped for the millionth time that day. There were so many things to take in, Garnet began to feel anxious. There were too many things going on around them, and their heart began to beat out of their chest. What if the hat doesn't find a house for me? Will I be sent home? Will all of this be a mistake? They broke out in a sweat, wiping their upper lip with their long robe sleeve.

Before long, the sorting ceremony began, and Garnet had missed everything the hat had said about the different houses. Without a clue what they were getting into, they waited for their name to be called in a dissociated fugue. A name was called; a student went forward and placed the hat on their head. There was a pause, then the hat erupted with the student's house. It happened again. And again, until finally, their name was called.

Jumping at their name, Garnet felt their stomach riot as their legs automatically took them to the hat and stool. Quietly, they placed the hat on their head.

"Hmm, yes. I see. I'll put you in...

"HUFFLEPUFF!"

Garnet let out the breath they were holding, relief flooding through them. They stood and went to take off the hat, then hesitated.

"Uh, thank you."

The hat made an amused grunt, and Garnet placed the sorting hat gently on the stool for the next student. Looking down, they saw their robes had changed from black-on-black to yellow accents. Looking for more yellow, Garnet spotted the Hufflepuff table and ran toward it, finding a seat between two older students. They kept quiet, but a small smile spread across their face as they admired the new crest on their robes. A badger, huh? Looking around at the other students around the table, they were met with congratulations and smiles. Garnet couldn't meet any of their new housemate's eyes, but the smile on their face showed their pleasure as they muttered quiet thank yous.

Sorting Ceremony 2025 - 2026

The Great Hall… It was ENORMOUS.

And Valerie found himself amongst the rest of the first years, standing stone-still with his hands clasped neatly behind his back, eyes fixed on the flickering candle flames dancing high above the veritable sea of faces before him. Hundreds of eyes-expectant, amused, bored, or downright disdainful-are scrutinizing the newcomers. The enchanted ceiling-a dark, foreboding expanse of storm clouds-soars so high above that the Hall, at least to Valerie, feels more like a courthouse where he is about to be put on trial; a sentence which he technically deserves not before the age of sixteen at the very least. Still, society dictates that one’s future be decided prior to the acquisition of adolescent peach-fuzz.

His perfectly polished shoes tap a soft rhythm against the flagstones as the line slowly shuffles forward.

One by one, names are announced, and bounce through the Great Hall; cheers and hollers rise from the various tables scattered throughout the enormous chamber. Some faces are met with roaring laughter, others with tepid, slightly strained applause, after which the student in question scuttles somewhat sheepishly towards their assigned house's table.

Valerie wears an expression of perfect, unruffled poise.

Or, at least, he appears to do so externally. Internally, his mind is a tightly coiled spring of tightly-controlled composure:

Do not disgrace your family name.
Stand up straight.
Do not show any fear.
Do not break.
Do not falter.

These are the instructions that have run in the back of his mind for years. His silver ring is cold on his finger, and he absently rubs the intricately etched De Valombre crest engraved upon it. A childhood habit-an anchor, perhaps, a sense of grounded reality amidst the swirling chaos that threatened to swallow him whole.

Then his name booms out above the cacophony.

"Valerie De Valombre."

A low murmur sweeps through the Great Hall. Many faces at the various tables pause momentarily, some exchanging hushed words. "Pureblood," Valerie hears a boy mutter from the center of the Hall. "De Valombre?" a girl repeats, clearly recognizing the name. His family is hardly the type to fly below the radar.

Valerie walks with a controlled grace to the stool situated at the front of the Hall. Perched upon it is the Sorting Hat, a battered, threadbare thing that looks positively ancient. It appears… utterly disgusting.

After all of these years of magic taking place in this castle, is a grubby old hat truly the deciding factor for all of our futures? How absolutely brilliant.

He sits down.

The Hat is lowered onto his head, and the world is plunged into an oppressive darkness.

"Ah, well then..."

The voice does not ring out, but echoes in his mind-an ancient, dry sound laced with amusement. "Another proper young heir, attempting quite valiantly not to shiver."

Valerie's jaw clenches infinitesimally.

I am not shivering.

"No, you aren't-physically. A commendable effort at suppression, given you've already mentally forecast no less than fourteen separate social blunders in the next decade."

Valerie says nothing.

The Hat hums softly. "A bent towards politeness. A sharp intellect. An almost total absence of the outward showing of emotions makes you practically invisible to most." A pause. "And fear."

Valerie's fingers twitch inside his trousers.

"Fear of failure, naturally; far more interesting than hatred, if I do say so myself."

I am not hateful.

"No," the hat whispers. "You aren't, intrinsically. But you have mastered how easily that is disguised behind pleasantries." The din of the Great Hall recedes, muffled, as the hat probes his mind with the casual expertise of a historian sifting through ancient documents. "You observe the Hall before you speak a word. You think before you react. You are a master at hiding your own thoughts, even from yourself."

Valerie swallows.

The Hat lets out a dry, raspy chuckle. "And yet, although you wear a flawless mask of serenity, you carry a definite unease about your own upbringing. That must be inconvenient for the individuals so painstakingly raising you."

A tightness blooms in his chest. His mind is suddenly filled, without his volition, with images of:

His father's indifferent gaze, directed somewhere over his head at the formal family dining table.
A group of pureblood children taunting a muggleborn. Valerie had seen it and done nothing.
The gnawing guilt that pricks at his stomach every time he thought about it.
The careful effort it required to nod his head in agreement when he was told this was the natural order of things.

"You crave freedom," the hat murmurs. "But you also crave power. And admiration. Control, because the first few years of your life were anything but. You were dictated to, and you intend for that never to happen again."

Valerie keeps his breathing steady.

The Hat is silent for a long moment. "Hmm. Certainly not Gryffindor; you're far too cunning." Valerie nearly sighs in relief. "And most certainly not Hufflepuff, either; you'd be torn to shreds by that kind of overt, unconditional niceness." A pause. " Ravenclaw would indeed develop your already formidable mind..." the Hat admits, "... But you do not pursue knowledge for its own sake, Valerie De Valombre." The voice shifts, becoming almost warm. "You pursue influence."

A cold, hard lump forms in Valerie’s stomach. The Hat is, as always, irrevocably correct. Not through malice or vanity, but through a desperate need for self-preservation and independence. Never again would another human being have control over him.

The Hat lets out a soft sigh. "Ambition laced with a shrewd understanding of others. Ingenuity. Family pride. An inherited ability to slip seamlessly into whatever role is demanded of you, while remaining-underneath it all-exactly who you are meant to be." The brim of the Hat nudges against his ear. "Therefore I shall be..."

The Hall is silent.

"SLYTHERIN!"

A thunderous roar of cheers erupts from the table dressed in emerald and silver. The students cheer and clap enthusiastically, though many of the older Slytherins study Valerie with a keen, appraising eye-the Slytherins are investors, after all, and are already calculating the value of their potentially unstable new asset.

Valerie pulls the Hat off and stands. The Great Hall seems sharper, more vibrant. He is met with cheers as he makes his way to the Slytherin table. An older boy with dark hair gestures for him to sit, while another offers a too-bright, clearly practiced smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. He sits. Green banners drape overhead; silver chalices glint in the lamp light illuminating the gargantuan table laden with food. Valerie allows his gaze to drift to the head table, and beyond that, to the impossibly magical sky overhead.

Slytherin. His parents would be delighted. The thought does not inspire quite the relief that Valerie expected, but still. As the buzz of conversation intensifies, and the feast magically appears on the tables, Valerie straightens his collar, lifts his chin, and takes his seat among the new Slytherins, looking as though he belonged there all along.

And perhaps, he does.

The room was grand, the feeling was warm as Danielle walked into the Great Hall following the rest of the first years. The tables, that seemed to go on for miles, were covered with tablecloths the colour of their respective houses. A lavish feast was set up in the room, it smelled so delicious that it tantalized her taste buds. As they entered the Great Hall we were welcomed by a tall, old man with blue eyes. He smiled at all of us and greeted us warmly. It was time.

"Kim Angeles, Danielle!"

As she stood up, she could hear whispering of students, especially from the purebloods. "Not another muggle." A girl groaned. "Bet she'll not even be sorted." Danielle's nerves started to take over her but she took a few deep breaths and walked onto the stage with grace. She sat down and folded her hands in her lap as the Sorting Hat was placed on her head. The old leather felt heavy, and the brim slipped down over her eyes, blocking out the room and leaving her in a world of whispers.

"My, my," said the hat softly in an ancient voice. "In centuries, I haven't seen such pride and ambition!"

Danielle held very still, her fingers tightening slightly in her lap.

"Slytherin would sharpen you." the hat mused, almost lovingly. "And Ravenclaw, oh, what a mind you carry, child. Hufflepuff would be lucky to have your loyalty." A pause, long and deliberate, like the turning of old pages. "But that fire in your chest... that stubborn, brilliant, breathtaking fire..."

GRYFFINDOR!

The hat's voice rang out before she had even exhaled. The brim lifted, the Great Hall flooded back in golden candlelight, the roar of the Gryffindor table erupting into applause. Danielle rose slowly, smoothing her robes, and lifted her chin. Somewhere behind her she heard that same girl go quiet. She walked to the Gryffindor table and sat down, heart still hammering, but her expression perfectly composed. She had nothing to prove to anyone. Though she supposed she would anyway.

HIIAs a half-blood living with a muggle single-mother for almost her entire life, it was the first time seeing a castle, well except in story books but that’s besides the point. Anyways, this castle was HUGE!! Even just the hall is ten times bigger than her home. When the students stepped in the great hall, most of them stared up at the thousands of floating candles and the enchanted ceiling that showed a beautiful, starry night sky. ‘Is this ceiling real? Or transparent? Or is there no ceiling at all?’Another first year accidentally bumped into her and snapped her away from her thoughts. ‘Sorry’ said the first year. She looked at her and went in shock ‘Eclipse? You’re a witch too?’
HIIThe sorting ceremony was about to start. An interesting looking hat caught Winter’s attention. ‘Why does it look like it has a face?’ Winter asked herself. It was the sorting hat, and it could… SPEAK! The sorting hat would sort us into our houses that we will be in for the next couple years. People say that the Sorting Hat is never wrong and while for some the Sorting Hat may pick a House that is unwanted or unexpected. Winter read about the houses in one of the books

‘Hufflepuff for the loyal and the hard-working.
Slytherin for the cunning and ambitious.
Ravenclaw for the studious and the clever.
Gryffindor the the prideful and the brave’

Winter had wished to be in Ravenclaw most so she could have some smart friends. Eclipse was also very smart so she thought that they would be in ravenclaw together.
HIIIt was very soon Winter’s turn to be sorted, since her last name starts with ‘A’. She sat on the sorting chair and preyed to be in Ravenclaw. ‘Ah yes, very ambitious and determined. Well let it be SLYTHERIN’ Winter looked sad, but thinking maybe she’ll be in the same house as Eclipse. She was pretty determined too, but Eclipse was more smart rather than determined.

Sorting Ceremony 2025 - 2026
Aesop looks around and inspects the huge room. There's so much to see and take in. Their face slightly scrunches in response to all the noises. They watch the Headmaster walk to the front of the room, as they stand somewhere in the back of the big group of students. They look up at the him, waiting for him to start speaking. Luckily, his amplified voice made it fairly easy to understand him. When they hear a softer voice interrupting him they stand on their toes, stretching to see who else is speaking. When the first year sees it is, in fact, the hat speaking, they smile in amazement.

It's when the Headmaster explains the sorting process that they start to get nervous. "It's going to look into my head?" Aesop thinks to themself. Both their parents were gryffindors so it was the only house they really heard stories of. They had a general gist of what the other houses were about, though. They weren't too worried about which house they would be sorted into. It was sitting in front of the crowd and trying to make friends that they were really nervous for.

They smiled all the way through the sorting hat's song. They cheered for all the other students as they got sorted, though their ears rang from the yelling around them. When their name finally gets called their heart sinks. It takes a few seconds to register that they have to walk to the front now. They squirm through the; now smaller, group of students and sits down on the stool. Aesop looks up at the Deputy Headmistress as she approaches with the hat. "Hmm..." The hat starts. "A big love for animals and beasts... Less so for humans." It states. The student looks around, scanning all the other's faces for a judgmental look. It doesn't take long before the hat calls out: "Hufflepuff!"

Aesop immediatly gets up and hurries to the correct table. It wasn't hard to miss as they were cheering loudly.

The massive oak doors opened, bringing in the recruits inside. A bright light hit Arlen’s eyes. Before her eyes stood the Great Hall, adorned with thousands of soaring candles. She could not contain her exultation. The hall was full of people. Arlen walked between the rows, looking around. As a Muggle-born, she had only recently learned about magic. She reread the book "Hogwarts' Story" on the train three times to be prepared in any way. Arlen and the other children were placed in a row, next to the large central table where teachers sat. Suddenly there was silence and everyone in the Hall stared at the newcomers. Arlen looked around, so as not to notice the curious looks of people. She noticed the stool on which the old, lost-time hat lay. Arlen couldn’t take her eyes off it, and suddenly, the hat began to sing. In the folds a mouth formed, which sang with a creaky voice. Arlen stared at her hat with her eyes wide open and tried not to miss a word. The Hat sang about the faculties of Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Slyzerin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. When she finished, the woman who had brought Arlen and the other children to the Great Hall pulled out a scroll and began to read names. Arlen was all squeezed. Now was the hour of X, who will decide her future fate. Children were summoned in alphabetical order. They sat on a stool, put their hat on and, after a couple of moments, the hat shouted the name of the faculty. Arlen was called one of the first. At that moment, she was very sorry that her last name started with the letter B. She approached the stool awkwardly; everyone couldn’t take her eyes off it. Arlen wore a hat on her head. The hat was quite large and fell into the girl’s eyes. Suddenly, Arlen heard the voice of the hat, shriek and wise. He said, "I see intelligence and reckoning. I see hidden courage. Where should I send you? Perhaps, yes, RAVENCLAW!" Arlen felt joy in the depths of her soul. She carefully removed her hat and put it on a stool. After that, she quickly bowed down and ran to the table of Ravenclaw. Arlen sat and stared curiously on the children, who were waiting to get sorted. Some time later, a girl with flame-ginger hair came to her place. She was a bit pale, but happy.
The girl said, "Hi! You are new too, right? I am Vasilisa, Vasilisa Ogneva. I am from Dublin, Ireland and I am half-blood."
Arlen answered her excitedly, "Hi! So nice to meet you! I'm Arlen Byrn and I am from Ireland too. Also, I am muggle-born, so I feel kinda lost."
Vasilisa smiled, "I know, but I will help you here. Not much, however. But everything you should now about wizard world, I can provide you!"
Arlen laughed and nodded.
That's how she met her first friend in Hogwarts - Vasilisa.

Amalie glanced around the massive hall, teeming with excited — and in some cases, nervous — students. The place was filled with the sound of chattering voices, the dragging of chairs and the occasional bang of something falling over. She looked at the older students seated in the long tables according to their houses, talking among themselves. I wonder in which of those tables I'm soon going to be seated. She wasn't too bothered about which house she would be sorted into. She was expecting Ravenclaw, like her mother or perhaps even Gryffindor, where her older brother, Adrian, had been sorted. She wasn't sure what she was supposed to feel — anticipation? excitement? nervousness? Everyone else either looked certain about which house they would be sorted into or was pale and clearly nervous. Gryffindor, Ravenclaw... what did it matter?

A hush slowly spread through the hall as someone who was clearly the Headmaster walked to the front of the Great Hall. Amalie straightened slightly, her face composed, as her eyes observed the Headmaster, who introduced himself as Solomon Lear. She listened to him carefully and couldn't help a grin from escaping at the Hat's dry, sarcastic remark interrupting the Headmaster's speech. She listened to how the members of the house one would be sorted into would grow into a family as the years progressed until one graduated from this esteemed establishment. I suppose the house I'm soon going to be sorted into does matter after all. She watched as the Sorting Hat was placed on a stool, and he started singing his song. As Amalie paid attention to the verses, she knew she would never forget these words.

And then the Sorting Ceremony began. She waited, watching attentively as the names of her fellow First Years were called out, in alphabetical order of their surnames. 'L' was quite far off in the alphabet; it looked like she'd be waiting for quite some time. She observed the students' reactions when the Hat yelled out the house they would be sorted into.

"Leclerc, Amalie."

Woah. That was sudden. She had lost track of the letters, and now it was her turn. She straightened herself and walked to the stool. Seating herself carefully, she slightly flinched as the Hat was placed on her head.

"Hmm. Interesting. Very interesting. A quiet exterior but a calculated mind. Observant,"

Amalie listened quietly without giving her opinion.

"And yet not reckless. Or arrogant either. No, not Gryffindor material in the obvious sense."

Ohh well... didn't really think I'd be sorted there either.

"Though there is courage, red will not be your colour. Where do I place this young one? Hufflepuff? No, you'd get bored."

"Yeah, wasn't expecting that either. Perhaps, Ravenclaw?" she muttered quietly, a question in her tone.

"Oh ho, think you're worthy of Ravenclaw, do you, young lady? Hmm, let's see... Yes yes, intelligent enough. Clever in all senses of the word," There was a pause. Amalie's breath caught slightly. "But no. Your determination for success decides it. SLYTHERIN!"

Whatt?!?! The one house I wasn't expecting. Clapping. Cheering. But all the background noise faded in Amalie's ears; only the amplified voice of the Sorting Hat yelling out her destined house kept ringing in her ears. Amalie stood shakily as the Hat was lifted off her head. She walked slowly towards the Slytherin table splattered with green and splashes of silver all over. She sat down, and only then did it properly register. Right. There was no point crying over spilt milk. She'd just have to get used to it.

Lena sat in the great hall, anxiously waiting. She picked at the skin around her nails. She thought to herself. Surely I'm a Ravenclaw, like my dad right? I'm pretty much identical to him. I think he might be mad if I was a Slytherin, they never had a good reputation. The thought of disappointing her parents made her stomach twist. She watched as the other first years went up one by one. She looked up nervously, looking at the night sky helped her feel a little less anxious.

Finally. After waiting for what seemed like entirety, her name Ec"hoed through the hall.
"Lena Lott"

Lena's legs trembled and heart felt like it was beating out of her chest as she walked up and sat down at the sorting hat.
"Lena, you have so much potential.. Your mind is shard, and eagerness to learn is very evident. Ravenclaw calls with wisdom, curiosity and intellect, all traits that you posses. But I sense something deeper.. A call to prove yourself, to rise up, to achieve. "

Lena's mind raced with a million thoughts. What could that mean.. Her heart dropped thinking about the protentional, she could tell this was going in a direction that she didn't like.
The hat's voice lingered.
"Powerful, resourceful, and determination are all things Slytherin could offer you. You may fear it, but ambition could be something you need. It can be a force of change, you can rewrite the stories they tell about your house. You can make your own path

Lena's mind raced even more This cant be right? Maybe Slytherin's aren't so bad? Am I more than what my parents want from me? Could I embrace this desicions without losing who I am?

After a moment, the hat spoke once more, softly this time,

"SLYTHERIN!"

The hall echoed with applause as Lena stood up, walking over to her knew table. She thought Maybe this new identity was just the beginning of a new story. She replayed the interaction over and over in her head.

As she sat down, the night sky above seemed like a guiding path in this new beginning, the stars twinkled brighter than before, as if encouraging her to embrace this new decision.

Once the headmaster finished his speech and the sorting hat finished singing it's song, they started calling first years one by one to the stool to get sorted. They were being called in alphabetical order, and so Josh did not have to wait too long before his name was called after a dozen of other first years we're sorted before him. "Ericson, Josh." He took a deep breath in, and walked forward trying to relax his nerves. He sat down on the stool like the other first years before him did, and he placed the sorting hat on his head. The hat was a bit big for him, as it did not fit his head and it covered his eyes - all he could see was the inside of the hat. A voice in his mind caught him off guard, as he flinched when it started to speak."Here's something you don't see everyday... A deep desire for knowledge, a rare thirst for wisdom. I see strong ambition, you value power and will do anything to have it." Josh just listened, becoming more nervous about which house it would sort him into. He knew very well that Ravenclaw valued wisdom and knowledge, and Slytherin valued ambition and cunning, from reading Hogwarts: A History."But that's not all, I also see a hard working boy, determined to prove himself a powerful wizard. And although it's not as evident, deep within, concealed very well, I see the courage of a dragon waiting to break loose. Where shall I put you...?" Josh didn't know what the voice would say next, but he thought hardly to himself, speaking back to the voice in his mind."I want to be in a house that I can call my home. I don't care about knowledge, power or anything else." This was a lie because deep down, he wanted to learn everything he could about magic, and although he was a bit embarrassed about it, he did want power, not to use it but to prove that just because he was a muggle-born did not mean he couldn't be more powerful than half-bloods and purebloods. The hat seemed to know this was a lie as well, as the voice responded in an amused chuckle."Yes, I see that desire in your heart. It's not everyday that you see such a dynamic and yet humble wizard sit on this stool. You'd better be in... RAVENCLAW!" Josh smiled widely, he was now officially sorted. He took the hat off of his head, and went to join the Ravenclaw table, where the other Ravenclaws were cheering. He sat next to other first year Ravenclaws who were just sorted, watching the remaining of his fellow first years being sorted.
