Janet was in one of her very rare moods when she didn’t feel the need to be constantly moving and taking action. She was just content to wander through the corridors of Hogwarts looking at the beautiful sunlight streaming through the windows. She turned the corner and found herself face to face with the library (a place she usually avoided because it normally meant detention for not being able to keep her mouth shut for more than a second). But the library wasn’t it’s normal half empty self, it was filled with people writing on pieces of parchment and their faces didn’t wear the usual miserable expression of people finishing homework. Janet glanced around for a clue as to what was going on and saw from a sign that it was write a letter day. Janet wasn’t very fond of writing but she was willing to give it a try. She supposed this was where her friend May Moonstar had written her the letter she had received. Janet had previously confused as to why you would write a letter to someone in the castle, surely it was a little silly to do that when you could just go up to them say whatever you had to say. Janet now saw that it was for this write a letter thing all these people were doing. Janet supposed it was only right that she should write to May first as she hadn’t had an opportunity to thank her in person yet. She would write a letter to one of her cousins or someone after. She chewed the end of her quill wondering where to begin. Janet wasn’t sure she really had the skill that others seemed to have, of being able to capture the thoughts and feelings running through her head and pin them down on paper for the world to see. The truth was Janet was quite used to blurting our everything she was thinking but she didn’t like to have them permanently documented on a piece of paper that people could look at any time they wanted, she would just go to them in person and say whatever she wanted to say. But she supposed she would have to try otherwise it would look to May as if Janet simply didn’t care enough to write back which wasn’t true.
Dear May,
Thanks for your letter! It was really nice. I’m not very good at writing letters but just know that however bad I am at expressing my feelings that I am very grateful for it. How’s it going? Lessons going okay? I’m doing alright actually despite having several pieces of homework to finish off. Anyway sorry this was quite short, thanks again for the letter.
From Janet
Janet sighed, it definitely wasn’t her best work but it would have to do. She sealed off her letter and wrote May’s name on the envelope.

It’s not like River expected these people to ever write her back, but she at least gave them the opportunity to. Who knows if any of them even remember her. Of course her father would remember her, but the others were people she hadn’t seen in years. They also must have their own lives to occupy their minds with. They probably didn’t even have the time to stop and think about River, but she didn’t care. She wanted them to know that she at least think of them now and then. They’re not forgotten.
After a bit, Cassandra had apparently finished a letter for River, as a piece of parchment made it to Rivers hands. The ravenclaw looked up at the other student and smiled quickly, before looking down and reading the letter.
She found it quite interesting that they had written each other letters while sitting well within conversation range. Not like conversations were really supposed to happen in a library, but therefore the letters were a nice way of going about things.
As River read the note she realised they seemed to have been a little confused concerning the teams, or at least forgotten how they had been divided during the game they played the first time they met. They had in fact both been on the same team, losing the first couple rounds. It was almost a week ago though, and considering the fact they barely knew each other, it wasn’t strange if she’d forgotten their teamwork.
Putting the letter away, River sighed quietly. she’d been relatively tired since she got out of bed. It was just one of those days, but she wouldn't have the time to take a nap or anything, perhaps some fresh air would be helpful.
River decided she’d write one more letter, and then go outside for some air, and hopefully become a little more refreshed. So she grabbed her last piece of parchment and carefully dipped her quill in some black ink before she started on her fifth and final letter.
Dear Emma

I hope this letter finds you and your family in good health. Last I heard from you, you were planning to move away from Hounslow, which I know you didn’t want to. If you did move out, I truly hope that you’ve found a good home and good people to be around. And remember that you can always come back and visit home during summers and such. I’d really love to hang out with you and Marie this summer, as I believe I’m going home to my father.

I wonder how you are doing? and what you are doing these days. Do you still dance with the same studio we used to? Or have you found a new interesting hobby? If so I’d love to hear about it if you find the time to write me back at some point.
I’m mostly busy with school myself. Though I do still keep up some of my other interests and hobbies on the side, but not to the same extent as before though. I don’t really have the time for that.

Hope you are doing well,
River
River waited for the ink to dry, and hurried up the process a little by lightly blowing on the parchment, making sure nothing streaked or anything. Aching for some fresh air, she quickly packed up her things, got up from her hair and started heading out. “Goodbye”, she said and nodded politely to Jensen as she passed her, and she smiled at Cassandra one last time before turning to the door leading out of the library.

Aida had a lot of problems herself, but she could not help but wonder about what must be going on for those professors who decided to step down from Hogwarts recently. The one she was the most concerned about was Olphie, from flying class. Newly plagued with claustrophobia and an assortment of other conflicts after coming to Hogwarts, Aida had really enjoyed Olphie's carefree and flamboyant teaching style. Paired with being able to be outside, Olphie's cheery attitude, and the wonder of flight, Aida had really grown attached to Olphie and her classes. So, with a heavy heart that she strove to keep strong, Aida decided to pen a letter to Olphie and post it in the library next to those of various other students.
Dear Olphie,

I can't believe you're no longer going to be my flight professor, but I know that you made this decision because it was the right choice. Your glory days need not be over.

I know in my heart that right now you must be going through a period of transition. If I were in your place, I would feel very disoriented. It is the beginning of a new phase of your life, and that could be intimidating to anyone. However, I want you to know that in our brief time together I have really benefited from the warmth of your teaching style. Even if my flying classes are to continue with someone else, I will always wish that you were here. I want you to know that you have some really good personal qualities and that I know you will succeed at whatever it is you choose to do next. Please feel confident that though we, your students, are sad at your parting... we send you our best wishes for your new beginning. Lastly, you will always have a home here.

Respectfully,

Ileen threw a thoughtful glance at her remaining parchment sheets. After finishing her letter to Dee she wanted to continue. She should tell people all the thoughts she couldn’t tell them in person so far. Thoughts she had been carrying around longer than she should have. Brooding, she tugged at the corner of a parchment. Writing the positive things to Dee was easier than her next project, which she had avoided for a while.
She knew that she should write to her parents. But she was still a bit… sad? Mad? Disappointed? First they had left, instead of waiting for the Hogwarts Express to depart. She understood that they were trying to protect her. Still, she felt a bit abandoned.
By now she knew that she had wished that her parents would have stood by her and that they would have taken the risk, if only to set an example for her. And even more, she had been waiting for a letter. This silence was not necessary to protect her. After all, you couldn't tell where the owl came from that delivered the letter.
Communication is not a one-way street! she reminded herself. Someone should take the first step. When she had finally made up her mind she realized how much she was missing her parents. There were so many things that she wanted to tell them.
After all, she was an eleven year old and she was used to not always understanding why her parents did what they did. So she plucked up her courage, dipped her quill into the ink, and started writing.

Dear Mum, dear Dad,

I'm sorry it's been so long since I've been in touch. I’m quite busy and there's so much going on here that I can hardly find the time or peace to write. To be completely honest, I was also waiting for you to write to me first.

Ileen stopped and chewed thoughtfully on her lower lip. Suddenly, she was worried. Maybe something bad had happened? This possibility had never even occurred to her.
With a queasy feeling in her stomach, she carefully folded the parchment, pulled a new one up, smoothed it and started again. This project should be about spreading positive feelings - not guilt.

Dear Mum, dear Dad

I'm sorry it's been so long since I've been in touch. I hope you are alright and work in London is fun. Or at least not that bad.
I’m grateful we moved back to England because Hogwarts is amazing. Even though I miss you very much, I feel more comfortable here than in crowded London. With the lake, the forest and the wonderful grounds it reminds me a lot of New Zealand. Also some of the lessons are really interesting. I like Transfiguration a lot. Potions is also cool. I won’t tell you about the lessons which are boring - no worries, I’m trying my best at everything.
One time when I didn’t try my best, something great happened anyway. You won’t believe it but a girl forced me to become her friend and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Her Name ist Dealla Prince and she’s funny, nice, smart and an unbelievable drama queen - that’s her funny side. She’s good at making contacts which I'm not as you know. And she talks enough for both of us. The most important thing is, I think she likes me for who I am.
Unfortunately we didn’t end up in the same house. She’s in Ravenclaw and I was sorted into Slytherin. Mum, I know you worry too much. But you don’t need to. Actually, I’m really happy to be here. The head of the house, Prof. Hjørdis Jensen, seems to be nice and caring and so far I was in no trouble. I guess this is my chance to prove that we're worth to be part of the wizard world.

I love you - please write to me as soon as you can.
Ileen

Deciding that, yes, writing some more letters was something they wanted to do, Mars pushed off the table, standing. They strode back over to the supplies table to grab a few more sheets of parchment. On the way back, they noticed the Head of Slytherin sitting at one of the main tables. Ah, so that was who had set this up.

Flashing a little smile in her direction, Mars waved a hand in thanks. They weren't entirely sure if she saw, but they continued on back to their booth.

Sitting heavily, they spread the parchment over the table. By chance, they had snagged three sheets, all worn at the edges and attractive. Chewing absentmindedly on a thumb, Mars thought about who they could possibly write a letter too. How about... Suddenly, they broke into a grin. The Slytherin boy. Leo, was it?

Mars had a habit of snagging random newcomers owl addresses out of the address book every so often. They found it easier to talk to people they had never met before. Leonard Oaksworth was their latest victim. He made for good conversation and they'd already exchanged a few casual owls back and forth, but Mars had never written him a proper letter more than a couple of words.

Dipping their quill into a bottle of ink, they began.
To Leonard Oaksworth,

Hello again. It's your favorite Ravenclaw hero come to save you from the giant squid and grant you sweet calamari dreams. Kidding. In all honestly, I don't think I could save you if I tried. Maybe I'll try to befriend the thing, that might work. I do hope you're keeping on schedule with the letters back home. I'd hate for your parents to be worried, especially if they plan to have another one on the way. God knows I know how hard it is to lose track of someone in the middle of nowhere. I suppose I never said thank you for replying. It might have been strange, a random wix sending you a letter out of the blue, but you're better conversation than I've had in a while, so thank you for not freaking out. Though it doesn't seem like your nature to do so, seeing as you're already better adjusted to Hogwarts than I am in such a short amount of time. You know, if you ever have time, I'd love to explore Hogwarts grounds with you. I haven't gotten out as much as I'd like. Other than that... How do you like Slytherin so far? How about Hogwarts in general? Looking forward to any classes in particular? I look forward to your reply.

Magically yours, Mars
Signing it, Mars pushed it aside to let the ink dry. It seemed that the number of people writing in the library hadn't quite dwindled yet. Pulling the next page in front of them, they re-dipped their quill. Time to run through the lists in their head for possible candidates.

After handing off the letter to his friend and colleague, Zahid hesitated before grabbing another (bigger) piece of parchment and exchanging his ink for the normal blue one again. After a moment, he exchanged the ink again, picking a simple black ink instead. It seemed more apt. Colourful was not how he would describe the recipient of his next letter, not even in life.

He tuned out his surroundings while he wrote his letter. Writing these letters was cathartic in a way and he simply kept writing and writing what came to mind. He only stopped and hesitated when he caught himself writing that he hoped the letter would find his friend well. It felt strange writing that, considering. Maybe he should phrase it differently. He probably had signed a letter off like this before but for some reason today it just felt wrong.

Tapping the quill against his chin, he thought on how to end his letter. Oh well, he would just end it there regardless. Signing off the letter, he set it down to dry. That had ended up being a longer letter than he had thought it would be – and he had not even gone into details. But then, it had been over a year since he had written another one of these.

Hello old friend,
It's been a while since I've written to you. I feel I must apologize but I have been quite busy lately and even before that – I have never had as many people to write to as I have now. I know you always said I would find friends when I least expect it (since I would never expect it) and I suppose you were right.

I have written you during my travels, I know that, but did I actually write to you since I began teaching at this school? It is a boarding school and a magical one at that. I never thought I would end up here, it never occurred to me. Back home I always thought I would simply stay at Garyounis until I retired at sometime far in the future. As you know, the civil war nixed that plan. Or more accurately, its aftermath. But I already wrote to you of that story.

Still, these days I consider the change in plans a good thing that came of a bad situation. A silver lining, if you will. Although, admittedly, parts of school life here are far more dangerous than I expected them to be. I do not know how close I came to dying in October. I only know that it had not looked good for a moment there. If Caradoc – one of the friends I may have made that I did not expect – had not apparated us out... Well, I might have seen you again sooner than either of us would like.

I miss you and I do look forward to seeing you again one day but I also do hope that that day is a long time coming. There is still too much I want to see or do in this world. And I know you would only scold me, too, if I arrived on those shores too soon. You were right, however, that while time far from 'heals all wounds' it does get easier to cope with said wounds. And it helps to have found new friends. I will never forget you, my friend, even if some days I barely remember your face or your voice – I still remember the mischief you would get up to and try to drag me into.

But I began writing this letter to tell you about what had happened lately. As I mentioned above, I now teach at a Wizarding school. I thought it would be a nice idea to settle down after years of travelling and to maybe be able to call a place home again but so far, I can only say I have settled in. Settling down implies a certain amount of rest, I suppose, and rest is not easily found in this school it seems. Oh, there are down times, of course there are, but there is so much happening. I vastly underestimated the amount of mischief magical children and teenagers get up to (I certainly was never this bad but then I did not have much interaction with other magical children). And then there is the rest. There is unrest in the Magical world here it seems.

I only hope I have not moved here to settle down only to be uprooted again by another civil war. But even worse is what has been happening right in this school. Apparently the Headmaster has been missing – for months! – and no one noticed. He was last seen in October apparently, before Halloween... Oh, that night. So much happened there. There was a Ball and students were attacked at the ball and it seems there have been attacks since?

And me and two other professors, we were lured away from the ball to the forest, under the pretence of students fighting out on the grounds and needing intervention... But we walked right into a trap. I still shudder when I think of that night. I have never seen an Avada Kedavra this close up before. And I would much prefer never to do so again, and it was not even aimed at me. I do not even think I have ever seen one before, period. Nor do I want to see a colleague impaled again. We may have survived, but we still know next to nothing about the who or why of the attack.

I miss your advice, my friend. I do not know who to trust. Some, well, one mainly; some of my fellow faculty members do not seem trustworthy at all – and apparently there is some possible evidence against the school nurse of all people! If you cannot trust your medical personnel... And we might not be able to... Well, at least one or more of the professors have some talent or knowledge in healing from what I understand. Still, it is not a comforting thought to think that you cannot trust the one you would go to for healing not to harm you instead. The things a healer has access to...

But let us speak of happier things, I do not wish to leave things on such a worrying note. (Not that these things are any less worrisome by speaking of happier things instead.) I do not believe I have told you about Herodotus yet. Or, did you know that Antonio and Constanza are now godparents? I admit I wish I could be mouse on that wall, given how much neither of them ever wanted children and how uncomfortable they seemed to be at the idea of (even temporarily) caring for one. It may not be nice, but I have to confess to a bit of schadenfreude on that account. At least with these two I know they do not mind my teasing them about the matter.

Now, Herodotus. Remember me mentioning Gurzil in some of my letters to you back when I still lived in Benghazi? I had decided that having moved to a permanent residence (despite it being a boarding school) was the perfect time to finally get my own cat. Yes, you may laugh at me for how many years it took. Still, I went to buy a kitten from the local Menagerie and there was this one little kitten that instantly made me think of Gurzil... and that kitten is Herodotus. Dot has been my trusted companion for almost a year now. He's a curious little adventurer at times but he is also very tactile and affectionate. In the beginning I could simply carry him along in my jacket but lately he has been growing too big – he loves playing scarf though and can spend ages draped around my neck if I let him. It is relaxing, having him purr along while grading.

I hope this letter finds you – Hm. I suppose the letter will find you well, given the circumstances? In any case, this is all I will write for today.
Love,
Zahid.

Her second letter done and safely tucked away, Dealla flopped back onto the beanbag dramatically and stared at the ceiling for a long moment. Why was this so hard? She wouldn't have any trouble just talking to her parents, if that were an option, she knew that for a fact. If her mum were here, she would be going on and on and on about Potions, about Herbology, and about the fungus she'd found with Blake in that out of the way corridor. If her dad were here...
She stopped short and sat back up abruptly. Maybe that was the problem? She had been trying to cram all her experiences into one letter, when in fact, the things she wanted to talk to them about were completely different.
Carefully, Dee smoothed a new sheet of parchment out on the clipboard, and set to writing.
Hi Dad,

Do you miss me? I'm pretty sure you do, because I miss you a lot. Hogwarts is great, but it's still not the same as being home, I'm sure you understand what I mean?
I still sometimes wish I had gotten into Slytherin just because it would be a connection to you, because I would be in the same Common Room that you used to sit in. But I've grown attached to Ravenclaw, I think. My friends there are nice, and living in our tower definitely beats the dungeons!
We're supposed to write letters today, to spread positivity or something, but all I can think about is how I wish I could tell you about all of my adventures here. Don't tell mum, but I've found some pretty cool stuff here. And friends to get in trouble with. You should be proud of me. I went to swim in the Great Lake, have you ever done that? It was ice cold, so I didn't stay long.
I know you're worried about me, but you don't have to. I'm fine, and I've never heard from them. Won't stop me from showing them how wrong they are, though!
I love you , and I miss you, and I'll see you in the summer.

Love, Dee
With a sigh, Dee set down the glitter pen. The letter didn't convey half of what she wanted to say, but it was a start. Her father would understand.

Genevieve had heard there was a letter-writing corner in the library which, in and of itself sounded fun but also heard a rumor that they could get chocolate frogs for writing letters! Excited of both chocolate and letter writing, Genevieve promptly made her way to the letter-writing corner. Unfortunately, as soon as she sat down, she had no idea what to write. She didn't really have too many friends yet, but she would soon! After a few moments of debating, she decided to write a letter to her mother.
Dear Mama,
I miss you... but but not like too much, do not worry, just like, a healthy amount of missing you. Things are good here, and very interesting. This place is way bigger than I thought! You told me about it but it is way better than any of the stories you shared.

I got sorted into Slytherin, you were a Griffindor, right? Or were you a Ravenclaw? You never told me too much about your house, now I'm kind of wishing you had. Or maybe you did and I just didn't listen. That's probably more likely... I've really been working on my listening skills, I promise! When I get home would you tell me more stories? Now maybe I will have some of my own to tell!

I'm so excited for what the year has in store for me. It is gonna be awesome, I just know it!

Much love,
Gen

P.s. You are way better at this writing thing than I am. Tell dad I say "hi!"
Genevieve let out a relieved sigh and set down her quill. She checked her letter over for spelling errors and scratched out a few things. Then she cursed her bad hand writing before deciding the letter was as good as it was gonna get.

Re-dipping their quill, Mars ran the feather part of it over their knuckles, thinking about all the wixes they had encountered throughout their time here. They'd never been particularly social, so there weren't many that stuck out to them but—Crystal.

Crystal Jagger, was it? Mars hadn't talked to the witch since the train ride to Hogwarts. They smiled at the memory of it. That had been an interesting train ride indeed. Mars was surprised they hadn't run into any of the other wixes on campus. Then again, it wasn't as if they'd tried too.

Tugging a piece of parchment out from the two paper stack, they laid it out in front of them. They set the quill tip to the paper and began to write.
To Crysta,

Hello! Long time no see. I don't really know you that well... but I suppose that's the point of a letter. I hope you're doing well. Has your mother sent you any more snacks from home? I'd love it if I could get baked goods but God knows Lady Estella isn't about to do that, and my brothers can't bake for sh*t, so that's a no go. I wonder if being raised around magic had made your transition smoother than mine? Hell, even if you weren't raised around magic, your transition was probably smoother than mine. I still can't find the dining hall 90% of the time, so... Anyway, I digress. Have studies been treating you well? I enjoy Charms a lot more than I thought I would. Magic has a certain—longing too it, the longer you're around it. Have you been on any adventures? If you have time, we ought to do one together. I'm basically always free (that's a lie, I just cram homework at midnight, but still). We should catch up. Hope to hear from you soon.

Riannon was wondering if she had anybody else to write to. She had her little pile of letters next to her and her glitter pens were starting to go low in glitter, her creativity was coming to an end. But she enjoyed speaking to Riley so she focused extra hard to think of someone to write to.

"Oh I do have a brother, Magnus. He is older than me, a third year in Gryffindor. He is fun to be around, he is really good at potions." she answered. "Also I don't mind not being without my parents all the time. But I've never been without my family for such a long period before, so having him at Hogwarts with me is quite reassuring. Do your twin sisters look really alike? Do you have a foolproof way to know who is who? "asked Riannon.

In her head she already had the image of three Riley, even though she knew that Riley was not a twin herself. If Riannon had a twin she hoped that they would get along and prank people together. But oh well, she already had a brother to do that with, so she guesses she truly did not need a twin.
Speaking of her family sparked someting in Riannon and she finally decided to write to her aunt Lyra. Motivated once again she took another piece of paper and started writing:

Dear Aunt Lyra,

It is me your little bundle of fun and fantastic niece Riannon (I was told that having self-confidence is a nice quirk to have, so I am boosting my ego a little bit).
As you know I have started my journey as a student at Hogwarts and you can rejoice because, like you, I am a Hufflepuff. I guess it is not that surprising when you know me. But anyway I finally settled down a little bit and I can go to all my classes without getting lost or being late. As of right now, I do not have a favourite subject but I do enjoy spending my time outside during flying lessons or herbology. Even if some of those plants sound quite nasty to be around. I would prefer to I keep all my fingers on my hand.
It is still quite early in the school year so I haven't made many friends yet, but as I am writing this I have next to me a nice Ravenclaw girl. Her name is Riley and she is cool to speak to so I guess we may hang out again later. Also for now Magnus has been a good older brother even if we are not in the same House.
I guess that all the news I have for now. So give all my best to uncle and the two terrors and I will see you at Christmas !

Lots of love, Riannon xxxxxx

Her letter was done and Riannon was quite proud of the little drawings she added to her letter. Her glitter pen was empty though. It must be a sign that Riannon should go back to her search for a Herbology book and maybe start her homework too. The life of a student is hard sometimes.

"Well I think I am done with my letters. I have written to all my favourite relatives and I really want to find that book before dinner time. So I'll be going." said Riannon smiling at Riley "Thank you for talking to me, it was really nice meeting you and I hope we will see each other again. Good luck for you homework !"

After saying goodbye, Riannon gathered her things and made her way towards the Herbology section.
