The classroom was empty, well, nowhere really felt empty here, Rowan had learned. Lunchtime meant the Great Hall, which meant everyone else was stuffing their faces while Rowan was here, in the stale silence of History of Magic, trying to do something she was planning on doing from the very first minute of attending this class. The room smelled of old parchment and dust and something faintly like despair, appropriate, given the subject. Oh, she hated this class, hated it with a passion that surprised even her, given how little she cared about most things. It wasn't just the boredom, though the boredom was considerable, hours of listening to a Professor go on about stuff she didn’t care about in the least for hours in a voice that could put a caffeine addict to sleep. It was the pointlessness of it. The way the past was presented as a done deal, a closed book, something to be memorized and recited and never questioned. Rowan had spent her whole life questioning things, she wasn't about to stop now.

So she had bought a dungball. From Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, in Diagon Alley, a little souvenir from one of her trips. She had paid with coins she'd saved from the school’s small allowances, and she had slipped the dungball into a tightly wrapped scarf around her waist, and she had walked out without looking back. It was a good dungball. Professional. Not like the sad, homemade attempts she'd been experimenting with back in her dorm, the ones that smelled funny, funny like a really sketchy drug funny, not funny like a stinky smelly ball. Was I making drugs instead of dungballs?

The ladder was propped against the wall beneath the ventilation shaft. It was old and wobbly and probably not up to any safety codes, but it was the only ladder she could find, and she had dragged it all the way from the third-floor storage closet without anyone noticing. That was the problem with pranks, she was discovering. The planning was tedious, the execution was lonely. She climbed the first few rungs, her knee knocking against the wood, her hands gripping the sides, and she paused. The ladder wobbled, so she steadied herself, tucking her brown hair behind her ear. The ladder wobbled again.

She looked down at the empty classroom, the empty desks and the empty floor where no one was standing, where no one was holding the ladder steady, where no one was watching her fail or succeed or fall.

I wish someone was here, she thought. Not to help or talk, just to hold the ladder. Just to be at the bottom, present, existing, so that the climb felt less like she was trying to get a concussion and go to the hospital but mostly less like something she was doing alone.

𝓦ith so much going on lately, Leo had quickly gobbled down his lunch to be able to free up some time during the lunch period to work on some homework before class. He had done very well throughout the year but keeping up with homework and studies was such a tedious task some days, even for the avid studier and reader that he was. But nevertheless he needed to press on if he wanted to continue to please his parents and receive their approval, an ever increasing need.

Once the lunch break was over he would attend his History of Magic class so he figured he would head up to the classroom to sit in peace and quiet to get some of his work done before the lesson started. As he walked through the mostly empty corridors he went over the checklist in his head with what he needed to do today so he could commit it to memory.

With books in one arm Leo reached his free hand out to push open the door to the classroom to find it empty, much like he expected. That is until he walked in and turned his attention to an out of place ladder leaning up along the far wall of the room. To his surprise a girl had climbed up the ladder and was standing near the top. Curiosity struck as he carefully examined the scene. Leo thought about what to say or if he should interrupt whatever she was doing in the first place but as he stood in the doorway he saw the ladder move a little, unsteady under the girl’s feet. He quickly put the books down on the table, letting the door close behind him and went over to the bottom of the ladder.

As he took the place at the foot of the ladder, he grabbed onto it with both hands and looked up at the girl. β€œShould I ask what you are doing up there or do I probably not want to know?” He asked and offered a friendly smile up at her. She seemed familiar, she wore ravenclaw robes so he probably passed her in the common room before but didn’t know her name. β€œMaybe you should come down from there before you fall off, I don’t think my levitation charm is strong enough to keep you from hitting the ground.” He jokingly said while making sure to hold the ladder steady beneath her.

Rowan looked down at him, a boy she didn't know, or did she ? She remembered maybe passing by in the Ravenclaw common room, she wasn't sure, but his face was familiar. Friendly smile, hands on the ladder. The ladder that was now not trying to kill her.

"Don't move," she said, her voice low and urgent. "Don't let go. Stay exactly where you are."

She didn't explain, nor did she thank him. She just turned back to the ventilation shaft, pushed the rusted grate aside with a screech of metal, and shoved the dungball inside. It disappeared into the darkness with a soft thud. She wiggled the grate back into place, climbed down the ladder, fast, faster than she should have, her boots hitting the floor with a thump, and turned to face him. Her face was flushed. Her hair was in her eyes, her heart was beating faster but her expression remained composed.

She thought about the hours she spent altering this dungball into a more efficient version, a better one, a one that can just sit there and let out a smelly odor slowly but surely until this whole classrom smelled of pigeon crap and poo and only one witness. That was... something for a first time. She smiled at her succesd, looking at the boy, at his hands still on the ladder, at his friendly smile that had probably been meant to be helpful and had instead made him an accomplice.

"Well," she said, brushing dust off her skirt. "You held the ladder, that makes you complicit. Which means if you snitch, you're snitching on yourself. And I don't think Ravenclaw parents raise kids who snitch on themselves."

She pulled off her gloves and shoved them in her pocket.

"I'm Rowan. Vexeley." She titled her head sideways getting a good look at him. He was a bit taller than her, with dark hair and dark eyes and she could see a few faint freckles on his face. Rowan's smile widened but it never quite reached her eyes. "Try not to look so guilty at dinner."

Guilt was loud, guilt got you caught. And Rowan had learned, very young, that the best way to avoid punishment was to never look like you needed punishing.

The girl called down to him not to move and to stay where he was, but why? She didn’t bother to explain why she made the request or why she was on the top of a ladder in the middle of a classroom and just continued whatever it was she was doing. Although the very next moment he realized what she was doing and immediately regretted walking in and coming over to her aide. As she threw the dungball into the vent, she quickly climbed down the ladder and landed with a loud thump from her boots. She was quick to remind him of the exact thing he had realized a moment ago, he was now an accomplice, granted an unwilling participant in this stunt, but an accomplice nonetheless. His parents would be furious if they found out he was part of a ridiculous prank like this and would no doubt punish him if he got into trouble.

With that in mind, he quickly backed up from the ladder now that she was safely on the ground and glared at her. She casually put the gloves into her pocket and introduced herself. How could she possibly be so calm at a moment like this when they could literally be seconds away from being caught. He took note of her name, Rowan Vexeley, for the sole purpose of figuring out a way out of this mess if he got caught and could properly put the blame entirely on her. After all it was her prank, not his.

The girl had a smile on her face as she told him not to look guilty. Guilty? Guilty of what? He simply was caught at the wrong place at the wrong time. He softened his expression a little as he gave her a simple nod, β€œI would say nice to meet you but under the circumstances I would say it’s not.” He shook his head before glancing up at the vent and then back at the girl. β€œI don’t know if I should give you my name, after all you are making me an accomplice and I don’t think I should intentionally give you information that would get me into trouble.” He smirked as he inched himself closer to the door. β€œI do believe, however, that if we want to avoid getting caught we should get out of here, now.” He insisted as he gestured towards the door.
