Deep in Hogwarts castle, in an area rarely traversed by students, is an office owned by the professor of flying. To reach this office, one must walk through a dusty hallway, it's stone floor cracked and old, and walls covered in poorly kept paintings and tapestries of Quidditch legends. Anyone who decides to visit would eventually come to a large door made of dark wood- one that is rather heavy and hard to open.

A newly installed knocker hangs at the door's center: a miniature steel broom whose brush hits the door to create a loud bang. A few seconds may pass after the knocker is used, usually followed by a man's voice that is muffled by the wooden entrance. "Come in!"

If the door were to be opened and the visitor was to step inside, the difference between the office and the hallway would be as clear as night and day. In the past, the office had been practically covered in pink- the previous flying professor seemed to like the color. Now though the main color scheme was an earthy brown: the floor and ceiling were made of polished dark wooden boards, and a pile of wood sat by a stone fireplace at the far end of the room. To the left of the fireplace, still lining that same wall, was a series of shelves holding various trophies and medals, some enchanted to move, some glistening on their own, and some completely average. To the right of the hearth, going all the way to the end of the wall and then continuing until about halfway down the next one, was a line of mostly empty broom stands, each with a golden plaque bearing the name of a famous broom model. The stands that weren't empty were those labeled "Cleansweep 2", "Cleansweep 3", "Cleansweep 5", "Shooting Star", "Comet 140", "Nimbus 1000", "Tinderblast", "Twigger 90", and "Moontrimmer", each holding their respective model.

The opposite wall to the stands was completely covered by bookshelves, entirely full of titles, both fiction and nonfiction, that related to quidditch, broomology, and other matters related to flight (both magical and not). The books were rather disorganized- it was as if they were constantly being taken out and then put back in without much care. Finally, on the wall that the door was built into various newspaper articles on both muggle and wizard sports were hung, the former of which showcased moving pictures of players either celebrating in triumph or wallowing in defeat.

At the center of the room sat a ring-shaped desk covered in various neat piles of parchment and a few stray books that were probably taken from the shelves. Above the desk 10 lanterns floated in a circle, basking the room in a soft orange glow. On the seat in the middle of the desk, beneath the circle's center, sat the young professor with a welcoming smile. "How may I help?"

The third year heard that there was a new professor for flying and dreaded to find out who it would be. He would make up pictures of a devil-horned old lady with pointy teeth and perhaps crazy colored clothes that would clash in hues. Painted nails or more jewelry than a person should be able to carry; perhaps a spot on image of a hag. The dusty old floor promised that he would not be disappointed by the visual image he would be seeing upon entering. He wondered how their voice would sound, whether it would sound like fingernails scraping over a chalk board, if their laugh sounded maniacal.

He swallowed thickly as he reached for the door knocker, chewing his lips as it hit against the heavy door. Then he would wait, second felt like minutes or centuries that he would spend just standing there as his heart throbbed against his rib cage. But he would have to ask the professor, it was more or less important; well for Alan it was.

The voice that called him inside was beyond what he expected. His mental image shattered as he heart a male voice. In one arm he clutched Tiger close to his chest, not having dared to go here without his faithful companion. Meanwhile in the other hand he carried his broom that visibly had seen better times... decades ago. Shifting his weight he opened the door with his elbow of the arm that was carrying the broom and pushed it open by bracing his weight against the door. He truly hoped he would not be walking right into a trap of something evil; fearing the nice sounding voice might have been an illusion.

Once he managed to maneuver into the class without dropping either the broom or his cat, he looked up, eyes frantically searching foe what he assumed must be a witch worse than he could imagine and was surprised to find a handsome young man sitting at a desk. "I- uh...", he muttered, searching for words as he glanced around the room, searching for any sign of evil but found none except for broom stands that were designed to display brooms and perhaps a few books he wouldn't take the time to reach the titles of. The third year stood in the middle of the room. Unsure, nervous even. He was so shocked by the normality of the situation that for a moment he forgot why he even ventured here, Tiger with him as his fierce protector.

River Jemari wasn't really in the mood to work. He had only recently arrived at Hogwarts, and in such a short time so many boxes had to be open, furniture had to be moved, and paperwork had to be done that the man wanted nothing more than to kick back and relax for a few days. Unfortunately, it seemed that the luxury was not destined to be, as one day when reviewing the syllabus that he had set up the man realized that half of it was... Well... Wrong. With classes starting in just a few days, the young Professor began a 24-hour spree of removing and adding topics, editing the order in which they were taught, and refilling all the proper paperwork.

River had just finished signing the last required document when he heard the sound of somebody hitting his knocker against the heavy wooden door. The man's chest tightened slightly, frustrated at the thought of having to conduct even more official business, but called whatever professor or staff member that needed something in. To his delight, standing at the door was a student instead of an adult. He came to the conclusion that the child looked to be in his early teens, putting him somewhere between the 2nd and 4th year's of Hogwarts. Clearly glad at the opportunity of meeting a student, River asked again: "Hello. Is there anything I could do to help?"

"Hello. Is there anything I could do to help?", even the voice sounded normal and the third year relaxed slightly and nodded. He might ads well just appear to be a very shy kid, there was no hint that he had doubted the professor before he knew him.To be fair Alan had been quite silly with his assumptions and went against his own rule not to judge anyone without knowing them.

Only now noticing that he had been asked twice already and that no one liked having to repeat themselves, he quickly stumbled forward and placed his Cleansweep 2 onto the professor's desk. He was being careful for it to not touch anything that looked important. Now the disastrous condition the broom was in, was n full display for the new Flying professor to see. The bristles stood out, snapped off in some places, splitting or sticking out on others. The broom shaft looked like it could have used a sanding a decade ago. Alone being in the possession of this broom should be a safety breach.

"U-Uhm.. I got th-this one l-last year, i-it was an o-old sch-school broom a-and it d-doesn't w-work w-wel or anything-", he muttered shyly as he held Tiger close to himself. "Oh, I a-am Alan b-by the w-way, pleasure to m-meet you, sir", he introduced himselt to the man, nervously. "A f-friend told m-me those brooms a-are bad a-and dangerous s-so I w-was wondering wh-whether trying t-to sell it w-would be worth it or i-if it is best t-to just throw it away?", he wondered as he sat down on a chair across the desk, glancing up at the professor curiously.

Even after River repeated himself, he didn't get an immediate answer. The man came to the conclusion that whoever this student was, it would probably take some effort to get them to feel more comfortable around him. The young professor came to the conclusion that it would be worth it though, as he held dear to him the philosophy that usually the more effort you put into a student the better they would do. At the end of the day, that was one of the main reasons that he had come to teach at Hogwarts- to help students learn.

Luckily, the boy didn't stand around silently for much longer. Quickly stepping forward, he presented a broom to the professor and put it on the desk. Almost instinctively River opened one of the drawers built into the desk and pulled out two white cotton gloves. He had immediately recognized the bad condition of the broom and assumed that the reason it was kept was that it was an important item- whether for sentimental reasons or others. There was no chance that he would handle a broom that held value with his bare hands. In fact, he had brought the pair for the exact purpose of ensuring that any old artifacts related to his craft at Hogwarts would remain unharmed. Putting the gloves on, he listened to the boy speak. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Alan. I'm River."

So you were gifted this school broom. River thought. As he picked up the broom, the man briefly wondered who it was that could make an item in such poor condition be so valuable. He took a closer look at the model as Alan continued speaking. He was hoping to get advice on it's worth. He wanted to sell it. Professor Jemari would have let out a soft chuckle, but instead, his heart skipped a beat. "Hang on..." he said, with a bit of a concerned edge in his tone. "Dont tell me... you never actually ride this, do you?" It couldn't be. The boy was taught the rules of flying just like all the rest of the students. He should have known not to fly a broom... in this condition. River recognized the item in his hand as a Cleensweep 2. He didn't remember the exact year of its release, but he was pretty sure that it was sometime in the mid-thirties. Riding a broom that old was alright if took care of it, but this? This was reckless and insane.

The eyes of the young students widened when the professor introduced himself. He nodded and gave the professor a shy smile. It was clear that he was still slightly nervous while his eyes darted around in the room, gaze drifting to take in the vicinity curiously. He watched with prying eyes as the professor put on a pair of gloves and examined the broom he had received from the third year sitting across from him, the very same third year that focused on every bit of movement that happened within the room, listened to every sound that reached his ears. The rustling of paper, the gentle dance of the curtain and the way the professor handled the broom with uttermost care. And slowly the Gryffindor relaxed, falling into the seat as his curiosity only grew.

"W-Well I t-tried a few t-times, but th-then a friend t-told me not to," he would admit nervously as he pulled his lower lip between his teeth, lightly resting the top of his teeth on them, not exactly gnawing but the sign was clearly portrayed. "I'm n-not much good at f-flying anyway, I th-think. Th-The brooms ain't even l-listening at a-all," he would explain to the professor with a hint of disappointment in his own voice. It appeared that the third year initially enjoyed the thought of soaring through the air with nothing holding him down, but there was also fear. The fear of failure crashing over his head like waves as he fell to the nearing ground with nothing to protect him. The third year froze slightly in his seat, a shudder trembling through his body as he forced a smile.

It took the Professor a few moments to actually register what alan was saying. So he did try to ride this... mutilated corpse of a broom. The thought of it baffled the man, as the boy in front of him definitely didn't look to be stupid. "You didn't by chance miss your first few flying lessons during your first year... did you?" He asked, carefully placing the broom back down on the desk. "You remember the three rules of flying, right?" River added the second question without really waiting for an answer to the first, hoping that Alan would answer them both at once.

River found it interesting that Alan claimed he was bad at flying. He found it even more interesting that the boy seemed to think that brooms just didn't like listening to him. With one of his main philosophies in life being that anyone can be talented in anything if they put enough work into it, the man refused to believe him. Because of this, an idea began forming in the back of his head. One that involved a nice tutoring session, some hard work, a bit of flight, and maybe even a few chocolate chip cookies smuggled in from the kitchen.

The third year glanced at the professor and both of the questions worried him a little as he glanced down at his lap, to his ever so faithful cat who had curled itself into a ball with its chin resting on the front paws. Alan softly pulled the feline closer before he faced the professor once again. Was there a flutter of color in his eyes? An illusion? A flicker of light perhaps? For a moment specks of a pale yellow color had appeared in the third years eyes but within the blink of an eye they had disappeared and gave space for the vibrant green irises again.

"N-No, I was th-there for sure!", he explained and nodded vehemently. He would have never skipped a class back then, but he had stopped going as soon as it was no longer mandatory and had refused to fly back then. They could not have forced him so that had been his way to go. He was however a bit taken aback by the second question and wrinkled his nose slightly in thought before he gave up and shook his head. "I don't remember...", he admitted which must have been obvious to the professor by now. Seems like he had to deal with a handful there.

Frowning slightly in disapproval, River Jemari leaned back in his chair. He took off the gloves and placed them down on the table before letting his gaze rest on the boy. If the man had noticed the strange colors appearing in the student's eyes, he didn't show it. "If there is one thing I expect my students to remember it's the three rules, Alan." The young professor took a deep breath and let the frown on his face soften. He knew it wasn't fun to get scolded by a teacher- heaven knows, the man had been in the student's position several times during his childhood. It was extremely important for the rules to be kept in mind though, as not taking even one of them seriously could result in terrible injury.

Looking down at the broom again, River decided that he might as well make the offer that he had come up with. "I'll tell you what: you meet me during one of your free periods down at the courtyard, I teach you how to fix that broom, and then I'll give you my opinion on how much it would be worth- if anything at all." Honestly, it was a bad deal for Alan. He could just as easily ask members of the quidditch teams or one of the workers at Quality Quidditch Supplied at the end of the year. That way, he would get an answer without putting in any of the effort. Hopefully, he wouldn't choose to do that.

Alan nodded slightly and stared at the professor apologetically shrinking back into the seat he was sitting on, clutching Tiger closer to his chest, which made the cat made a small noise in what could have been comfort or discomfort. "I didn't think I w-would ever need th-them," he explained to River and hoped that this would be answer enough. Alan had always been kind of terrified of flying, ever since he was little it seemed odd to him but some inner drive or curiosity had always made him want to try it as well. But never had he tried to battle those fears until the beginning of the school year but so far he did so without success.

The offer made his eyes light up as he nodded his head yes. "F-Fantastic, I could meet y-you i-in June when th-the school year calms down a little!", he exclaimed in a hint of excitement as a smile graced his features. This went better than he had expected it to go and he couldn't deny the feeling of gratitude within him. "See you th-then Professor River," he would say as he got up to leave the office but waited for any words the professor wanted to add to the conversation. He would reach for the broom and glance at River as he awaited a response.
