Hope it isn't too boring!
Time: Friday, September 5, 2025

Ahh, Friday. Claire was exhausted. It was fun training to be a witch, but summer didn't seem a long enough break. Her parents were right. They had begged her to stay home for her whole vacation. Claire had been torn, between her loving family, and the possibility of many new friends. In the end, she had split her time. Now she was paying the price.
It had been one week of Claire being a second year. It had flew by fast, yet seemed so long ago. Claire was now at her final lesson: Flying. But, Flying wasn't really a lesson to Claire. She was a broom racer for her school. Racing and Flying was her hobby, her life. True she seemed like a girly-girl, the I-can't-stand-dirt-under-my-fingernails type. She was, but she also loved the wind in her face, the healthy sweat of her brow, and the thud of excitement in her heart. Why can't a girl be both? Claire openly would admit it: Sports are really fun!
Claire thought all that, though not for the first time, at her Flying lesson. It was the first one of the year. She always welcomed being in the air, and as luck would have it, the first lesson was take a practice flight to remember what you had previously learned. Either the professor was lazy, or it was for the muggle-borns. Claire had been flying half the summer!
Just then she spotted a familiar-looking ginger-haired girl with an eye patch. Claire was greatly curious, but would never ask, because it was a really rude question. Instead she flew closer and greeted the girl, " Hi. This lesson is easy don't you think? Probably more of a re-cap for the muggle-borns. The rest of us don't need it. I'm Claire by the way."

Don't be fooled by my looks, blood, and riches; I am actually really nice.

The summer had honestly been quite boring. I hated to admit it, but I was glad to be back at Beauxbatons. Sure, I had met Avery, and we'd had a nice time, and stuff, but there was nothing like being able to cast magic. And I wasn't going to break the law, just for a bit of fun.
The week had been quite fast, and it was finally Friday. The best day. And, to make it even better, the last lesson was Flying. I loved flying. It made me feel like one of the dragons that I grew up near, towering over everything, with not a care in the world.
It was just a practise flight, so I got onto my broom, and pushed off the ground. I had no idea how we were supposed to do any form of sports wearing the horrible skirt in the uniform. But, my trousers (which I had packed, much to Grandma Marie's distaste) were still up in my dorm room, as I'd forgotten to look at my timetable until far too late.
I was flying around in a circle, far too slowly for my liking, when a girl flew up to me. I recognised her, of course, because she was in my year. But, I'd never spoken to her. I waited while she spoke.
"Oui. C'est facil." Yes. It's easy
It was true that the lesson was easy, but she didn't need to go on to say that it was for muggle borns. I rolled my eyes. She was such a classic pure-blood, believing that everyone else was below her.
"Les nés-moldus peuvent voler. Le chercheur de notre équipe de quidditch en est un. Et tous les sang-purs ne savent pas voler." Muggle-borns can fly. The seeker of our Quidditch team is one. And not all pure-bloods can fly.
Then, she went as far as to introduce herself. I silently groaned, and considered flying away, before I realised how rude that would be.
"Cinder." I said.
I looked around me, wondering what was happening. The answer was nothing much. Just a few people falling onto the ground. There were only a few of us who could actually fly after the summer.
I looked back at her. She didn't look like the sort of person who liked flying. In fact, she looked like she'd never sweated in her life, never done hard work.

Sorry I'm late!
It took Claire a second to understand what Cinder meant, because Claire hadn't meant it offensive. Cinder must have thought that Claire was making a joke about how muggle-borns had less practice than other students! Claire wasn't. She had only meant what she had said logically, of that it was illegal to use magic near muggles, so muggle-borns couldn't practice being on a broom, for obvious reasons. She was just saying that how easy the lesson was for people involved in sports.
That made Claire remember that she had won the International Broom race, not that she had truly forgotten. She smiled with the memory of flying through the air, almost uncontrollably fast, and all that mattered was going even faster no matter what. It was a great surprise seeing that she had won, because she was probably one of the youngest in that race. Maybe the other team didn't think that she was a target. Well, she had certainly proved them wrong!
Claire realized that an answer was probably expected out of her, and that she had spent a minute or so daydreaming. "I just meant that muggle-borns have less chance to practice over the summer, than do others. And, that it's easy for me since I'm a broom racer."

Claire seemed to daydream a lot. She was quite annoying, just hovering around in the air, with a glazed expression. I turned to fly away, when she spoke again, so I turned around slowly. She did have a point that muggle-borns couldn't really practise in the summer.
"I can't practise in the summer either. The dragons would probably set fire to my broom."
She said she was a broom racer, and I tilted my head.
"Broom racing? Cool." It did come across a little bit sarcastic, but that wasn't my problem. "I play Quidditch. First-string Chaser. But, we don't do many matches."
Joining the Quidditch team had been one of my goals that I'd set just a few days earlier, on the first day of the year. The final one that I still needed to do was to make some more friends. Well, that wasn't likely to happen, with the sort of people I was in a class with. Including the girl right in front of me.
But, I imagined what my grandma would say if I didn't make any friends for the entire year. I sighed, before having an idea. I looked at Claire closely. She looked like a classic posh girl, but maybe she was determined enough.
"Do you like a challenge?"

"Too bad," Claire said sympathetically at hearing that Cinder didn't do many matches. Claire didn't either, and it was no fun. Claire absolutely loved the feeling of trying to defy speed and gravity. She loved pushing herself almost at limit and knowing she might be in danger on one wrong move. But, Claire was never afraid, she liked the thrill of danger and the relief of danger passing. The speed defying and the feelings is what made broom racing the best sport in Claire's opinion.
Claire thought the conversation was wrapping up although she stayed by Cinder just in case. Then she heard Cinder's question. Claire did. She had a very good feeling that the question wasn't really a question; it was a dare. She noticed her hands automatically tighten up on her broomstick and her legs to grip the back of it harder. To Claire "a challenge" usually was a broom race, and she started to get into correct start position automatically.
"Oui. Yes. "Yes, in fact I do," she responded. A second or two passed. "What kind of challenge?" Claire asked. She was so ready that she had accepted without knowing what she was agreeing to! But, that hopefully would make no difference to Claire, because she didn't back down easily.

I almost laughed when Claire said yes straight away, without even asking what the challenge was. I almost respected that, before telling myself to not be too friendly immediately. She still seemed like a stuck up pureblood.
Now, it was time to see if I was actually able to translate the challenge into French, from my English brain. Even having lived in France my entire life, I did everything, in my head, in English. Finally though, I managed to work out what to say.

“Your challenge is to answer these questions. However many of them you get wrong, you have to fly a lap around this field.”

It wasn’t a hard challenge, as such, but it would see if she was as good a flyer as she said she was, while also seeing if she actually knew anything at all.

“These are your questions, about something I know the best: What colour is a Chinese Fireball dragon?”

I waited a few seconds between each question.

“What continent are Antipolian Opaleyes from? What is the only dragon still roaming in Great Britain? Which dragon is known for its small nose? And, finally, are male or female dragons more powerful, in general?”

I shifted on my broom slightly, excited for Claire to try to answer.

Sorry for the wait!!!
