An Afternoon Outside

Elise was calm and her attention was wholly upon Skylar’s speech. This all did not seem as it was a big deal or surprise to her. She tried to picture that certainty in her head, but it was always too distant and foreign an idea for her.

After a moment, Elise said softly, “No… I didn’t hear stories like that.” Not about Hogwarts, or real magic. Nothing that people really believed in.”

Her hands were loosely folded in her lap and her fingers were playing nervously with each other. "Magic in the muggle world is more like something for fairy tales and children books. They are witches and wizards which are exaggerated, and sometimes a little unkind. Magic in the muggle world was more like something for fairy tales and children’s books, witches and wizards made it into the stories but they were always either greatly exaggerated or cruelly stereotyped. Sometimes, it is even something that people must fear and oppose.”

For a moment her eyes traveled far away, pensive and aloof. Magic was never used to describe such things. "It was called coincidence, or imagination, or a logical explanation had to be found for it. There’s never been meant to be magic.

" That is what confused me when it happened to me. There was nothing to judge it by. No stories that said, ‘this is to be expected. Just the feeling that something impossible had happened and maybe it wasn’t meant to be understood.”

She looked back up again, her expression softened. So no… not really. Muggles don’t have stories about Hogwarts or real magic. But I think they still imagine things that are very close to that, without ever realising how close they actually are.”

She hesitated a little before saying, “Does growing up with magic make it easier to trust it or does it also put expectations on people to live up to?”

Skylar hums thoughtfully as she mulls over the question. Growing up with magic... It never really seemed abnormal to her. It just is what it is. She sees how it may be confusing to those without magic, because a lot of it cannot be explained. Like wandless magic. It just came with a feeling, and tug from within.

"I think growing up with magic did not make it easier to trust or expected, it just made it more present, in a way. We were just aware of it. It made it easier to trust, but also not. We trust it because we know what it is. People only fear the things we do not understand. However, our awareness of magic also brings the risks to light. We know the dangers that come with magic, and we also hear the stories of those who were unfortunate enough to experience a tragedy." Skylar explains. It was funny, how knowing something changes people's perspective. It can make them more afraid, less afraid, more confused, less confused.

"I think growing up with magic does, however, cause more expectations to be put up. People are already expecting you to know how things work, since you grew up with it. What some people forget though is that we are still kids. Like English, it is something we all know how to speak. Yet I could not name a grammar rule for the life of me. It just is."
Skylar's eyes gain a thoughtful look as she continues to ponder over the question. "Magic is really just a feeling. Aside from the learning part, like spells and logic, the magic really just comes from within. It is just whether you know it or not. The biggest difference between muggles and wizards is probably just how much you know."

"I do wonder though. Do you think everyone has at least a little magic in them? Maybe that is why some muggles come so close to imagining magic. Perhaps they have a little magic themselves, not enough to wield it like a wizard, but enough to dream and imagine it. Or maybe it is just their magic trying to tell them something, and they have yet to understand it."

An Afternoon Outside
I never really thought about magic like that before. I always thought of magic as something big and impossible, but your description made it sound much more natural, like it was always present and not something foreign to everyday life.

Not to say that muggle-born is weird but now I constantly find myself paying attention to all the things that I did not before Hogwarts. Like how much he prejudice I was against it before I even stepped foot in Hogwarts. Now I keep wondering, how many things do people just overlook, not because their eyesight isn’t good or anything, but because nobody ever tells them that these things are even an option?

And I get what you mean about expectations too. People act like if someone grew up around magic they should just automatically know everything, but half the time I still feel kind of unsteady here and I’m literally living in it now. I think a lot of folks are just… faking their confidence and acting like they get more than they really do. Also, I actually like your idea about muggles having a little bit of magic in them. Not enough to hold a wand, but enough to conjure up images in their head that are real enough. I mean, there has to be a reason why muggles came up with stories of magic even before they knew that wizards existed, right? If there were no laws about magical secrecy, what one magical thing would you show the non-magical people?

Skylar tilts her head as she ponders Elise's question for a moment. "I think... I would show them that we can fly. It may be a little biased, given how much I enjoy flying, but I think flying really gives people, or me at least, a sense of freedom.

"Look at how close muggles already are to flying! They have these things called planes, and though I have to admit they look quite bulky, I suppose they get the job done. But compared to flying on a broom, it just does not have the same resonance, if you get what I mean."

Letting out a sigh, Skylar tilts her head up at the sky. White, puffy clouds roll past, the slight breeze rustling the trees in the courtyard.

"You were definitely right about a lot of folks being frauds though. Especially when I visited the Ministry. Many of the adults there act like they were greater than everything in the world, and they were just so patronizing.

You should hear the way they talked about muggles. If we had to do a comparison, muggles are a lot more advanced in technology and science. Yet the officials still view muggles with this muddled lens, ignoring their accomplishments just because it did not align with our own."

Skylar lets out a scoff as she remembers the snobby members in the council. Seriously, how small-minded can some people be? Her train of thought was interrupted though as she feels something grow warm in her pocket. Pulling out her rememberall, Skylar notes that the glass ball was filled with red smoke.

"Well, looks like I have to go now. I have Charms next." Standing up and brushing off her robes, Skylar offers Elise a grin and waves goodbye.

"Nice meeting you, Elise! And thanks for the help. Hope to see you around sometimes." With that, the blue-haired Gryffindor departs from the courtyard.
