Josh and his parents had never seen a place as interesting as Diagon Alley. It was a single street with shops cramped along on both sides, seeming as if the alley went on forever. The sound of chattering, laughing, walking, and animal noises filled the atmosphere as they followed their escort wizard down the cobblestone street. "Always crowded with people this time of year... No matter, we should be able to get your shopping done in the next hour. First stop, Gringotts bank."Josh had never heard of a bank called 'Gringotts'. It was most probably a wizards only bank, because his parents also looked a bit confused at the mention."Uh... explain to us again, slowly, why do we have to stop by this 'Gringotts' bank? We already have money to buy our son's school supplies." The wizard actually chuckled, and shook his head by his dad's unworldliness. His dad looked both furious and embarrassed by the wizard's reaction."Gringotts, Mr Ericson, is the special wizarding bank here in Britain. It's easily the most secure place for a wizard or witch to keep their treasures. Now you can't just go around the alley and try to buy things with muggle money, you need the wizards currency - galleons, sickles, and knuts. Luckily, Gringotts has a bureau de change where you'll be able to change your muggle money for wizard money.'' The wizard's explanation seemed to have gotten through to his parents, as they now nodded and looked as if they were slowly starting to understand."So what's the exchange rate, and do they charge for exchanging?" "Don't know, but the goblins will tell us when we get there." The wizard spoke casually as he checked his watch, as if he hadn't just said something that wasn't normal to muggles. Josh spoke for the first time since they entered the alley,"Hang on, goblins are real??" The wizard however did not respond because they had reached their destination."Here we are, Gringotts."Gringotts was easily the largest building in the alley. It was a snowy-white structure, featuring grand columns along its facade. In the center, was a bronze double door leading into the structure. Josh had no time to admire the appearance of the building, as the wizard walked inside and they quickly followed him in. They entered a reception chamber, where a pair of silver doors was positioned again right at the center. Two short creatures, even shorter than Josh, stood on each side of the silver doors wearing scarlet and gold. They both had very long fingers and feet, and they were not very pleasant to look at. He guessed correctly that these creatures must be goblins. The silvers doors had a poem engraved upon them,
Enter, stranger, but take heed
Of what awaits the sin of greed,
For those who take, but do not earn,
Must pay most dearly in their turn,
So if you seek beneath our floors
A treasure that was never yours,
Thief, you have been warned, beware
Of finding more than treasure there

They went through the silver doors, and entered a magnificent marble hall. Counters were lined up across the huge room, where dozens of goblins sat either writing in thick books, weighing golden, silver and bronze coins, or assisting wizards and witches in front of them. His parents looked very nervous being surrounded by goblins all around them, and he couldn't blame them. Goblins just had that intimidating aura that could make anyone feel slightly uneasy. While his parents went with the wizard to one of the goblins at the counter, he stood still and took in the appearance of the hall properly, and all the many goblins working with treasures."Wow, this really is magic..." he muttered to himself in awe.
