Ezra made his was to the Owlery, his footsteps thumping like a drumbeat. He couldn't help grinning to himself as he went. Lily, his friend was going to meet him there, to visit an Owl that they had both grown incredibly fond of. They had met up occasionally to chat but hadn't since the new year so he was excited to see her.
He hummed softly to himself on his way through the corridors. The school was quiet today. It was an early Sunday morning so most would be sleeping in or having a late start. He reached the Owlery and climbed up the stairs. The owls hooted at him softly, rustling their feathers.
He did his best not to look at them, after all, owls still creeped him out. He did get used to the sound of their wings though, having spent so much time visiting Guy or sending letters, so that didn't bother him much. Yet he still couldn't meet their cold gaze.
The Owlery was quiet today, besides from one or two students sending letters, nobody was around. It was early after all. The atmosphere was cool and refreshing, though he did shiver on entry because he was sensitive to cold temperature.
He had reached near the top of the tower, where he knew his friend awaited when he heard a familiar soothing trill from behind him and turned to face his first aves friend. "Guy!" He exclaimed, rejoiced, whirling around to see the small barn owl. He let out a yell of alarm. He jumped back so fast he nearly fell down, his heart pounding.
The owl had a dead rat in its beak. It fluttered around him, making happy chirpy noises, showcasing its treasure. Ezra's heartbeat went back to normal. "You scared me there, little guy." He said, sighing with relief, his hand on his chest.
"Is this for Lily? I'm not sure she'd appreciate a rat..." He said to the owl, placing his hand on his chin in thought. "You can certainly offer it to her. Who knows, maybe she loves dead rats!" He giggled at the thought. "For the record I had nothing to do with your plan." He stated to Guy, who probably had no idea what he was saying. Speaking of Lily, she should be here by now...

Mentions - @Ezra Calloway | WC: 379Lily climbed the many steps up to the Owlery, she was used to the long winding steps at this point. She and Ezra had continued to meet here, every once in a while, ever since that first accidental meeting, but they haven't had the chance since the New Year. Now is the time and I can't wait!
The morning air was calming, keeping her nerves away. She was a few minutes late which was unusual for her, but it took her a while too long to find her scarf this morning and it was a little colder today. Hopefully, Ezra hasn't been waiting too long...
The place smelled of feathers and parchment, as usual, and the usual owl hoots and wing rustling could be heard from all around. The sunlight poked through the window illuminating Ezra talking to an owl.
Guy became unofficially their owl, unlike the others, Guy was different, special. He was so much more than an ordinary barn owl. That's why every visit up here, other than to send the occational letter, was spent with Ezra and Guy, chatting till nightfall.
"Ezra!" she announced softly, weaving past the dozing owls coming and going. Then she saw it. Something strange grasped in Guy's beak. She noticed that the owl fluttering excitedly next to Ezra, held a limp rat dangling from his beak like a gift. Lily froze mid-step, eyes widening in horror. "Guy, no. Merlin's beard, what is that?"
She pressed a hand to her mouth, torn between laughing and running away in revulsion. A dead rat from you, sweet, little Guy? Is this going to become a usual affair? The owl stepped closer, chirping happily as if presenting jewelry. Lily couldn't help but start laughing despite her revulsion. "If that's for me, I'll politely decline," she said, stepping closer finally, but staying clear of the "gift." Guy, unknown to the decline, dropped the rat at her feet with a proud flair of his wings.
Shaking her head, Lily crouched carefully, softly ruffling Guy's feathers. Glancing up at Ezra with amusement, she asked playfully, "Did you put him up to this? Or is he just trying to impress us both?"
The moment felt perfectly absurd, yet she was happy to see them both again after so long.

Ezra whisked around when he heard his name called, a wide grin set upon his face. "Lily! I was wondering where you were." He exclaimed. He saw her gaze flicker from him to Guy, who still held the rat in his beak. He watched as the horror spread upon her face and couldn't help but burst out into laughter. That had been the exact expression he had made when he saw what Guy had brought for them.
He watched her interact with the friendly owl, a warm smile on his face. At her question, mock exasperation portrayed on his face. "Really Lily, you think I am the reason for every weird thing this strange creature does? No, I did not put him up to this I am indeed extremely offended by your assumption!" He said haughtily, sticking his nose in the air. Unable to remain serious, he immediately erupted into a fit of giggles.
He turned to walk towards one of the windows to get some fresh air and gestured for her to follow. "How's your year been?" He inquired curiously, listening to the flutter of feathers from the other owls. Spending more time in the Owllery had made him more comfortable around owls, and the sounds no longer startled him, but he still couldn't stand their watchful eyes. That was something he would have to work on. Eventually. Now he was here, with two of his best friends, enjoying the beautiful morning and that was all that mattered to him.

Their sporadic visits had made this tower feel like a secret hideout. No matter how classes piled up, these moments were a good escape. The dead rat was left forgotten as they settled next to the window, Guy arriving to land in between them on the ledge.
Fresh air rushed in, crisp and easing away the feather musk filled scent. Lily leaned on the windowsill next to her little best friend, facing her other best friend. She'd changed since New Year, grown up and felt more confident.
As she observed the beautiful view outside, Lily thought about her year. "The year's been quite brilliant, actually. I've missed this though. You? Anything exciting?" She smiled, genuine curiosity at what her friend had been up to. She'd ask Guy but he'd flap his wings and hoot, most likely having spent his time sending letters happily.
She was quite aware of the watchful eyes of all the other owls, the fluttering of coming and going owls, and the ruffling noise all around her. All the noise settled into the background as she was finally reunited with two of her best friends, admiring the perfect view of the sun in the morning.✰ c'est la vie ✰

Ezra gazed out of the window, a soft breeze blowing the hair out of his face. Fresh, cool and new. For the first time in what seemed like forever, he breathed. He closed his eyes and took in the air. A hint of a smile pinched it's way onto his face. He turned to Lily. "We're second years after this summer." He mused, "Can you believe that? I certainly can't." He turned his attention to the owl, who made soft chrippy noises on the ledge, happy to be with it's two best friends.
"It's nice to get a break from everything, you know." He admitted. Life hadn't been exactly great. He was much less overwhelmed by everything, that was for sure. But he still had a hard time catching up with school work. Plus his mother had been acting really strangely. The Christmas holidays had been a rollercoaster of emotions but mostly a whole lot of awkward. He was glad to be back.
Ezra let out a sigh. The first three months of the year had already flown by faster than he had anticipated. He was grateful to have finally gotten a moment of solace among the rush of time. Every moment in the owlery with Lily and Guy was like a breath of fresh air after stepping out of a claustrophobic room.

Mentions - Dialogue | Thoughts Date - 03/03/26 @Ezra Calloway Location - Owlery WC - 290Lily's heart skipped when Ezra mentioned second year. Already? Time moved faster than she expected. She turned to face him, her smile thoughtful. "I can't believe it either," she replied softly, watching Guy preen on the ledge between them. "Feels like I just got here, but also like I've known this place forever."
Lily could completely relate to her friend's words about wanting to take a break. She understood the feeling of being overwhelmed with classes, feeling pressured to receive great marks, and being in a constant rush to get things done. Places where she could escape from all of this were the library corners and her visits to the Owlery because time seemed to stand still in both places. She thought out loud, "This is a nice place. When I'm here, it feels as if time has stopped. The outside world can’t get to us here." While she was speaking softly, she was gazing out of the window. "I’m so happy that you’re here." Then she noticed her owl friend in front of her and thought how funny it was with its big eyes looking right at her. "And you too, Guy."
As Lily rested her elbow on the windowsill, she could see the sun shining across the landscape outside the window. The sounds of owls in the Owlery faded and became a background noise along with their feathers rustling, soft hoot-sounds and distant sounds from the castle bell. She felt anchored here with Guy and Ezra. She did not feel particularly perfect or overwhelmed. Instead, she felt that she was simply there.
"Second year. What do you think we'll get into?" Half laughing, her eyes sparkled with curiosity, and for a moment, the weight of everything else lifted.✰ c'est la vie ✰
