It was strange even for him. Zephyr had never raised his voice like that before and definitely not in front of this many people. Usually, it was someone else, someone older with authority, but not him. Zephyr was still standing on the Hufflepuff bench trying very hard to look like a competent authority figure and not a teenager who was covered in mashed potatoes and spite. He was breathing hard from the adrenaline, and even his pulse had not settled yet. Internally, he felt like a puppy trying to act like a lion. Frankly, it was difficult, especially because now that the shouting had stopped, he was aware that half the Great Hall was probably staring at him now. And unfortunately, he probably smelled like gravy too.

A part of him wanted to laugh at how absurd the entire situation looked now that silence had returned. One look at the place, the Great Hall looked chaotic. He rubbed a hand down his face before suddenly regretting it because there was apparently still pudding somewhere on his sleeve. A small voice near him spoke up and had to glance at the girl in confusion. At the offered napkin, it almost broke whatever remained of his composure. He accepted the napkin, “Thank you...” His voice was noticeably calmer now. He climbed down from the bench... that should at least stop everyone for now.

Minutes passed until the others were done eating...The only people left were the unfortunate collection of students assigned detention with him.

He was finally able to remove the dried mashed potatoes from his robes. His hair still looked disastrous. His request to get the necessary cleaning tools were provided to them. "I didn't expect when I became a prefect, this is the first order of business I'll be dealing with." He exhaled loudly and then turned serious as he faced everyone. "Alright, since all of you were so enthusiastic about turning the Great Hall into a battlefield.." Jade eyes swept across the mess surrounding them. "...you are going to clean it then." Before anyone could protest, he raised a hand, "Don't look surprised, you started this food war.” He motioned toward the tables, "All five tables, their respective bench, and the floor too." The corner of his mouth lifted slightly, "And before any of you ask...no magic. I'm serious, if you lot are happy enough to make this mess, then you are perfectly capable of cleaning this.” He took a sit on a nearby bench, "You better start now, I'll be watching you all like a hawk to make sure they're all spotless."

This is a detention thread for the following students: @Madeline Tomlinson, @Lily Clarke, @Crystal Theodora, @Ryder Hawke, @Tina Carille, @Maximilianus Kenneally Vidler, @Flame Afterglow, @Mikaela Hendricks, @Hana Suzuki for the Food War that happened at the great hall.

Just to be clear, you are NOT in trouble OOC, just IC! Here are the requirements and guidelines for this:
- You cannot join or create new threads until you've completed the posting requirement here. (You can still post in your current threads.)
- The detention is basically just to clean the mess you all created without magic.
- To complete this detention, you must post at least 600 words.
- Once each of you completed the requirement, you are still free to post, it's up to you.
- Do not wait for me to post, you may continue with the task and I'll just close it with one last post.

Don't hesitate to owl me if you have any questions!

You have got to be kidding me. Flame thought as she looked around at the mess. Then she smiled when the Zephyr guy said that No magic was aloud. Cause Flame had been raised as a Half-blood she found good old cleaning with your hands easier than using magic to do it for you. Flame looked around the room and spotted a couple of trash bags in one corner along with some discarded brooms.

She tapped Max on the shoulder and pointed towards the supplies in the corner. If they started now and worked quickly, they could finish early and be done with it. She looked around the group of kids who were getting detention with her. Some of them looked frustrated with getting detention while others looked bored. Flame walked over to the trash bags and brooms, grabbed two of each and then walked back and handed one of each over to Max. Flame tapped a Hufflepuff Girl on the shoulder and pointed towards the trash bags and brooms.

Then Flame grabbed Max’s arm and dragged him over towards the Gryffindor table so that they could start cleaning up “So,” she said Once they were away from everyone. “Out of all our pranks this is the first detention of the year! How does it feel?”

Someone told me I run like a girl. I said that if they ran faster they could to.

The food fight, though not his idea originally, had seemed like such a good one. He had had a blast with both throwing and getting hit. The natural next step was to joke with a friend, so that was what he had done. He and Flame had both crossed the room in order for him to throw scrambled eggs at Zeph. It had not gone to plan.

Yes, he had thrown, and laughed until he could barely breathe. Zeph’s reaction had been different than he expected. Thinking first that it was a play for the onlookers, Max was all ready to throw some more. What else was there to do in a food fight? But then the new prefect had jumped up on a bench and started shouting.

He froze mid motion, trying to maintain his hold on the scone he had planned on throwing at someones head. What was wrong with them? The question gave him pause. They were just having a bit of fun, weren’t they? Still, the tone made him deflate a little. He hadn’t meant any harm but a quick look around the room was enough to show that plenty had been done.

Zeph pointed out the guilty parties and they were told to remain after breakfast. He felt bad now, there was no denying it. A look down at his robes revealed what had been hidden in the heat of battle. Juice and some sort of syrup were splashed across, mixed with big crumbs of toast and a fair bit of scrambled eggs. He was also pretty sure he had mashed potatoes in his hair somewhere too. Yet, he seemed to have been luckier than many. Especially Zeph.

He withdrew a bit, trying to blend into the crowd while the masses finished eating. Not because he intended to sneak off, no. Because he felt bad. Bad about the mess, about his friend getting angry, even the victims of this disaster. It all turned in his gut, refusing to leave him alone.

As people had cleared out, the speech given didn’t exactly lessen his guilty conscience. Not that he deserved to be let off the hook anyways. So when the consequences were laid out, he didn’t protest. He had been a part of creating the mess, so it was only fair that he helped putting it right.

He looked towards the cleaning supplies when Flame tapped him, and nodded. They might as well get started. He was handed a sweeping broom, and picked up a dish rag too, before he let himself be dragged back over to the Gryffindor table. It was only fair that they started cleaning where they had created the biggest mess.

He went right to work too, cleaning the table. Most of the food scraps were swept off to the floor, as it was much easier sweeping it up that way with a broom. It at least seemed that way to him. He had just started on a mess of jelly when Flame spoke up. Her comment was funny, but he could only manage a half-hearted snort. «It is a miracle that it is the first of the year» With all the trouble they had gotten up to the past couple of months, it really was a wonder. «I guess it doesn’t feel so bad…» He thought for a second before adding with a bit of a laugh «Willing to bet this won’t be our last though!»

He paused for a moment to look over at Zeph again. The churning in his stomach just wouldn’t stop. He knew himself well enough to know that it was unlikely to do so before he had a real talk with his friend and apologized. It had all seemed like such fun, but it wasn’t funny unless everyone in attendance thought so. And Zephyr obviously didn’t. He shook the thought from his head and turned back to Flame. Even in their current situation, he still saw an opportunity to have at least a bit of fun. «Hey, I bet I can clean one half before you can clean the other.» With a teasing spark in his eye, he set to work once more.

Zephyr is nicer than I thought. Other than the fact he gave me detention. He seemed really nice. He thanked me for the napkin. He also softened after getting the napkin. He was about ½ a centimeter taller than me but he seemed so much bigger. Most likely because he was standing on a bench at the Hufflepuff table. He was bigger than me as in taller. I felt small, really small. My voice came out small when I was talking to the Prefect. He seemed nice as I said before. I made mental note to see if he’d like to meet later. Most likely not, cause he gave me detention. The task was simple clean. Without magic. He really thought this was bad? I was the perfect one in my family. I had a chaotic little sister. This was EASY. I heard a bunch of people groan at the thought of no magic. Being a muggle born has its perks you know. The tears started to come back. Thinking about how I was the perfect one in my family made me feel even less perfect here. Don't cry it’ll just prove it... I thought to myself. I picked up a rag and dipped it in some soapy water. Starting to clean the Ravenclaw table. Keep your head down and work. I told myself. Cleaning was easy. Detention wasn’t. I looked up to see Zephyr watching us. Totally not creepy. It felt weird. It felt like I was letting someone I didn't know down. I felt this feeling in my chest when a teacher gets mad at me. I don't know how to explain it. But when a teacher gets mad at me, especially my favorite teacher, i feel this weight on my chest. But I don't understand it! I barely know this person. This was also my first detention. EVER, I hope I never get more. Not because I don’t like the work. Because detention means your not perfect. And I HAVE to be perfect. I continued to scrub. Thinking about life. Poor Zephyr was still drenched in potatoes and his hair looked crunchy. Like my hair was after a dance competition. BELIEVE ME, hair can get that crunchy. For some reason, I needed my table to be the cleanest. The most perfect. I don’t care if i was here ALL day. This table was going to shine, there wasn’t going to be any streaks of water. I scrubbed even harder. Even harder. I wasn’t leaving until it was perfect. I then realized that it would be done faster with a partner. I saw Mika also at the Ravenclaw table and I walked over to her. "Hey Mika, want to partner up?"

Minutes after the food war ended, my memories got blurry. And now I had detention.

But honestly? I have no idea what really happened. It's like I was seeing my body do all those things and just did nothing. I was eating, as usual, and the next thing I properly remember? I'm full of food, the hufflepuff's prefect is mad as hell, and I have detention.

He said that no magic was allowed. And I didn't actually know anyone in here.

Wait, no, I did. I did know Tina. I was just too... coward to talk to her. So I just headed towards the Slytherin table to begin with that one and took out some napkins from there, a trash bag from a corner and a broom, and I began cleaning, inmediately getting distracted by my own thoughts.

What was happening to me lately? I've been having those... dreams where I walk out of my bed, all dressed in black, and just walk around the castle. Over the rooftops, glued to the walls, my shoes not making a sound...

I began humming, not really caring about the melody, when a morbid, agitating, awful and horrible headache attacked me.

Why was I having the headaches now? This was getting ridiculous. It was because of the stress. It had to be.

I avoided Tina's presence as much as I could while I kept moving along the table, cleaning and minding my own business, throwing away trash, removing food with the napkins, sweeping away any little piece of rice or potatoes that was still on the floor...

And my mind drifted back to the moment, just minutes earlier. Why did it felt like hours instead of, what, thirty minutes ago? Ugh.

The worst of all? I smelled like I had been cooked myself, I surely had food on my hair and I was losing class. What was I going to tell the teacher? 'Sorry, I got into a food war, but that was not actually me, that was the dreamy me who likes to make random bad things just because?'

No. Not a choice.

My feet were killing me, too. Atrocious. Like I had just walked to the Hadestown and back, just like Orpheus had done in the myth. I finished cleaning up one of the sides of the table and I began with the bench next to the wall.

The Saints were surely disappointed on me. I could feel it, smell it, sense it in the air. The Prodigy kid? The one who was supposed to behave and be the example and be smart and nice and a student model? Involved in something so basic, so stupid, so selfish, so common, so low as a food war? Unacceptable. Unbearable.

And my dad...

My hand froze mid-cleaning. My dad.

There were two doors: He was either disappointed, too... Or proud that I was finally being a normal kid. I chose to believe and go with the second door. In his last letter, he said that he wanted me to act like a normal kid. And he implied it on the one before that... And, basically, every single letter he has sent to me.

But I chose to believe on a third door. A third option: Not knowing. No, I could never lie to my dad in that way.

But if he didn't know, I wouldn't need to worry about his deception. And it wouldn't be a lie, at least, not a proper one. Hiding information isn't entirely lying, it's just... For his own sake. And mine.

I finished cleaning that side of the bench and moved to the next one with a deep sigh. Well, at least I had an excuse to avoid today's flying lesson. I'm sure the teacher would understand that I was too busy having detention. Very interesting, in fact.

The Hufflepuff Table

Maddy had discovered three things today.

One was that mashed potatoes was absolutely disgusting to clean off wood.

Two was that oatmeal somehow ended up in places oatmeal should never be.

And three? Zephyr Deakin was terrifying when angry and totally different from the lost innocent kid she had met in the corridors once.

Maddy sat on one of the Hufflepuff benches, aggressively scrubbing dried something from the table .A strand of messy hair kept falling into her face and she kept blowing it upward in annoyance every few seconds.

This,” she announced dramatically to nobody in particular, “is cruel and unusual punishment.”

She pointed accusingly at a stubborn stain on the table.

How are you still HERE?!

Maddy narrowed her eyes at it before scrubbing harder.

The Great Hall looked strange now that the excitement had faded. Earlier it had been loud. Alive. Flying toast, screaming students, mashed potatoes in people's hair. Now it was just the consequences. Buckets. Rags. Tired first years cleaning off floors while Zephyr watched them like an exhausted father.

Her eyes drifted toward him for a moment.

He still looked annoyed. Less furious than before, but definitely still annoyed.

And honestly?

Maddy felt a tiny bit guilty.

Tiny.

Very tiny.

Okay maybe slightly more than tiny.

She sighed quietly and rested her chin against the back of her hand for a second while looking around the Hall. Even now, despite detention, people still looked lighter somehow. Less tense. Max and Flame were still joking around while cleaning (heard them calling each ther by their names so...). Ryder looked mildly offended while wiping tables. Lily was nearby, and just seeing her there made Maddy feel calmer automatically.

The castle had needed this.

Maybe not the food on the ceiling part.

But the laughter part? Definitely.

Her eyes flicked back toward Zephyr again.

Yeah… she probably owed him an apology. A real one this time.

She stopped a few feet away from him.

You know, for someone covered in mashed potatoes earlier, you got intimidating really fast.

A grin threatened to appear on her face but she forced it down.

I am sorry though,” she admitted, quieter now. “I didn’t actually mean to make your first prefect duty… well…” she gestured vaguely around the destroyed Great Hall, “this.

A beat passed before her usual energy slipped back in.

But in my defense,” she added quickly, pointing around the room, “the food flying everywhere was kind of iconic. And you have to agree......it was needed, maybe not this MUCH mess but.....you know what I mean

She sighed...."I hope..."

Ignored, that's what I was. Mika just ignored me. Well whatever. We talk a bunch anyways. I went back to the table and started scrubbing. One, two, three. That was the way I counted the scrubs. There wasn’t going to be any potato on this table. There weren’t going to be any scrub marks. I refuse to be one of those people who just wipe the table free of food and leave. No this table was going to sparkle. I watched two Gryffindors who were treating this like a game. I wanted a friend like that. But I was not jealous. I scrubbed harder and harder. There will be no streak marks at all. One two three. If “Little Ms. Perfect” got detention, she would make sure that the detention was perfect. Because in my mind. That erased the fact that I was imperfect for getting detention. You know, like how negatives cancel each other out in math? Like that. One two three, dip in soapy water. Sooner then later, the table was mostly free from streak marks. It was missing something. FINISHING WAX! I thought. I looked around. No was in sight. “Um, Zephyr, do you have any finishing wax?” I pipped. Silence. “Finishing wax, you know to polish the table?” I pipped again. I’m NOT insane.

And so, Hana was in detention. Yes. Detention. Hana literally has no clue why she got put into detention, and now she was just standing there, kinda awkward and mumbling complaints about this. Okay. Let's rewind to the part where she got into detention to see if she really deserves this fate.

She was still standing near the Hufflepuff table, hand holding some food that she forgot - a baguette? A toast? An apple? A piece of chicken leg? That was not a big deal, just note she's holding food. Hana was greeting her friend and seriously thought of joining the food war, given that it's chaos, she can hardly reject any chaos. But the key word here is - thought. She didn't really do it, or let's put it this way, she didn't have time to do it because well, a prefect assigned them to get into detention. Trying to look innocent, Hana stuffed that piece of food into her mouth, but the prefect was faster, so Hana is now in detention.

"But hey. Prefect. I swear I saw you participating in the food war too. Covered in mash potato, that's pretty sure a sign worse than me, who's just very innocent, holding a piece of -um food. She tried to complain, and nope, that didn't work. That is absolutely unfair, I did nothing, I'm not even meant to be in detention.

And now, back to reality, she is now holding a piece of cleaning cloth instead of food, rubbing the stains very hard, thinking she can break the table as a sign of protest. She cannot.

I see the way you're acting like you're somebody else. Gets me frustrated
