Taking Boredom To New Heights
The Great Hall seemed to stretch on forever when Mikey got bored. Not your average bored, but the kind where being still became almost physically impossible at some point.
At this particular moment, Mikey had already reached this stage of frustration at least ten minutes ago. His open textbook lay in front of him on the Ravenclaw table next to his notes. Somewhere between a half read paragraph and a doodle of who knows what. Studying was no longer taking place. Surrounding noise, laughter and arguments did not offer any kind of entertainment that would help Mikey to distract himself for even a couple of seconds from his growing boredom, which resulted in Mikey sighing deeply and slumping further onto the table.
He needed something else to do before he lost it completely.
And then, he spotted Olivia. There she sat alone among all that chaos, looking completely immersed in her book and apparently oblivious to everything around, ignoring the argument taking place nearby and generally paying absolutely no attention to the surrounding life. Mikey stared at her for a minute trying to comprehend how she managed to do it. An inspiration suddenly hit him. Without even trying to pretend that he was studying, Mikey grabbed all his belongings and rose from the table with unnecessary vigor before moving towards the Gryffindor table.
Olivia still didn't notice him. Mikey dropped himself right beside Olivia, placing his textbooks on the table so abruptly that it made a loud bang. "I'm dying," he announced solemnly. Immediately afterwards, he put his head down on the table with arms folded under, creating an impression of having just finished some extremely tiring exercise.
"Nothing to do over there," he explained further, muffled voice still clearly audible. "I tried studying. I tried listening to other people's conversation. I even counted how many times someone mentioned 'Quidditch' in five minutes."
Silence for a second. "… It was twenty-three."
Then, raising his head from its resting place, Mikey turned to Olivia and examined a book she was reading with a disapproving glance. "How do you do it?" he asked sincerely. "Like seriously. How do you read in here and not go crazy?"

Taking Boredom To New Heights

It was a completely normal day for once. Beautiful weather outside. No full moon in sight. No homework that needed to be done in a panic.@Mikey Forville
Olivia was on her way down to the Great Hall to eat. She had decided that today was one of those days when she would sweat to death if she wore one of her beloved grandpa sweaters, so she had dug out a flannel shirt and a dark gray t-shirt that she was now wearing.
Under her arm, for once, she had a book that had nothing to do with schoolwork. She had actually decided to read Quidditch through the ages that she had borrowed from the library. Partly because she hadn't read it in over a year and partly because her Quidditch knowledge was too poor for someone who went to Hogwarts.
The Great Hall was very noisy at this time of day but Olivia had learned the noble art of shutting out the outside world which could come in quite handy right now as she, unfortunately, had sat down next to some fourth years who were arguing very loudly.
But she just opened her book and let herself be absorbed in a chapter about the Arrival of the Golden Snitch. The sound from the outside world disappeared completely as she read about how Bowman Wright had invented the small flying ball that could replace the Golden Snidget in the game. Olivia silently thanked this Bowman Wright because she hated that they used living creatures in that way for fun.
BANG!
Someone had sat down next to Olivia and slammed books down on the table so loudly that Olivia jumped. When she turned to this someone who had disturbed her in her reading she was delighted to see Mikey.
“Oh my God Mikey,” Olivia exclaimed with a little laugh. “You can’t scare me like that.”
Mikey had put his arms on the table and leaned his head in them like he had just run a mile.
“You’re not dying,” Olivia said, marking the page she was on in her book. “Anyway, what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be sitting at your own table?”
He explained that there was nothing to do at his own table. He had tried to study, listen to other people’s conversations, and even count how many times someone had mentioned Quidditch in five minutes.
“… It was twenty-three.”
Olivia stared at Mikey. “Twenty-three times? In five minutes?” She laughed. “People at Hogwarts are even more obsessed with Quidditch than I thought.”
Then Mikey lifted his head and looked at her book. “How do you do it?” he asked sincerely. “Like seriously. How do you read in here and not go crazy?”
Olivia smiled and put her own book down on the table. “Well, I’ve mastered the noble art of ignoring the world around me,” she told Mikey with a slight smirk.
She leaned her face in one hand and looked at him. “How are you doing, by the way? Is Quidditch going well?”Word count: 505

Mikey laughed resting back against the bench a little more comfortably now that he’d successfully escaped the Ravenclaw table. “The noble art of ignoring the world around you,” he repeated. “I seriously need you to teach me how to do that someday.” His eyes drifted briefly toward the chaos happening farther down the hall before returning to her again.
At her question about Quidditch, though, his expression shifted almost immediately. The boredom disappeared fast. “It’s actually going really well,” he said, and this time the smile that appeared came naturally. “Like… really well.” He glanced down for a second before looked back at her again. “We haven’t lost a match yet.” There was a small pause after that, like he still wasn’t fully used to how good it felt to say out loud. “And I’m first string keeper now,” he added a little more quietly. That still felt strange and hard to fully believe.
“I was nervous about it at first,” he admitted. “Actually, I still am sometimes before a match. I think if I ever stop being nervous completely, something’s probably wrong.” For a moment he just listened to the noise around them again. “What about you?” he asked. “Have you been out flying much lately?” His eyes flicked toward the book beside her. “Or has this completely taken over your life now?” he asked with a softer smile, nodding toward the pages. “Because every time I see you lately, you’ve got a book with you.”

@Mikey Forville
Olivia laughed when Mikey's bored expression disappeared in less than a second after her question about Quidditch. He told her that things were going really well for him right now and that Ravenclaw hadn't lost a single match so far. Olivia was really happy for him even though she wasn't sure she should be happy for another house when it came to Quidditch at Hogwarts. Her whole house would probably kill her if they knew what she was thinking, she thought and smiled to herself.
“And I'm first string keeper now.”
Mikey's words made Olivia look up at him closely. “First string keeper?” she asked to make sure she had heard correctly. “THAT'S ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!” she then exclaimed, beaming. “Hey Mikey… keepers are the ones who guard the hoops, right?” she said a little more quietly just to make sure she remembered correctly. Her Quidditch skills were really crappy.
Then Mikey told her that he was a little nervous at first and still is sometimes before a match. “I totally agree,” she said, nodding. “Nervousness is actually a good sign, it makes your brain extra sharp and you can focus better.”
Now Mikey turned the question back to Olivia. He asked if she had been flying anything lately or if books had completely taken over her life because every time he saw her she had a book with her.
“Mikey,” Olivia said with mock seriousness. “You’ve known me for over a year now so I think you should know that firstly I prefer to keep my feet on the ground and secondly I suck at flying. Books suit me better, much calmer and much less risk of injury.” She smiled at Mikey, not a chance that Olivia would ever try to join the Gryffindor Quidditch team.Word count: 296

Mikey found himself smiling just a little at that, as well as her eagerness to check what a keeper does in general. "Yep," Mikey said with a smile. "The keeper protects the hoops." There was something pleasant about the enthusiasm she showed him, enough that some of the disbelief Mikey felt about being a starter disappeared a little.
"Thanks," Mikey said, quiet and sincere. "Sometimes it still seems strange to me." On her remark about nervousness focusing, Mikey nodded. "Right. It's actually kind of like that. If I get relaxed enough to feel no nervousness, I must be doing something wrong." But then it turned out Olivia was not interested in flying. More accurately, in flying at all, and with anyone.
Mikey burst into laughter again, reclining on the bench and looking at Olivia. "First of all," he began, "you do not suck at flying." He pointed at her slightly with a quill in his hand. "You are being dramatic," he continued. There was a slight smile on Mikey's face. "And second, flying is a necessarily skill." Mikey's gaze went upwards for a second or two, before he returned his glance to Olivia. "I don't know," he said, shrugging slightly. "Sometimes it's just good to escape. There will be no sound, no shouts about homework in class, no arguments in the Great Hall."
He spun the quill between his fingers for a couple of seconds before turning back to look at Olivia again. "You should fly with me someday," Mikey suddenly said. "Not Quidditch training, but just plain flying." He gave a little laugh. "We could just go fly for a while. Go somewhere, get away from all this boring stuff inside."

Olivia couldn't help but join in Mikey's laughter. She was already happier than she had been in quite some time. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and turned so that she was sitting more at an angle to Mikey as he continued:
"First of all," he began, "you do not suck at flying."
"Mikey, you've seen me in flying class! I can barely sit on a broomstick, let alone fly. Besides, I don't have a very good sense of the world around me sometimes," Olivia exclaimed in protest, thinking of all the times she had accidentally run headfirst into things.
"You are being dramatic," he continued.
"I am not," she replied, crossing her arms.
"And second, flying is a necessarily skill."
Olivia snorted. "I much prefer ground transportation like trains," she said quickly to reinforce her point. "Plus, there's actually floo powder and apparating."
She saw Mikey's gaze move upwards for a second before he met hers again. He described how liberating he found flying and Olivia's smile softened. "I get it," she said, looking into his bright blue eyes. On closer inspection, she thought they looked just like a bright blue, warm day perfect for Quidditch.
The quill that Mikey was twirling between her fingers caught Olivia's eye and she looked at it until Mikey pulled her out of his fixation with a comment she was definitely not prepared for: "You should fly with me someday," Mikey suddenly said.
Olivia stared at him like he was crazy. "Fly? With you?" she said hesitantly, straightening her back. He laughed a little and said it would be nice to get away from all the boring things indoors.
The laugh hit Olivia square in the chest without her being able to do anything about it. Her eyes moved almost unconsciously over Mikey's face and down to his hands that were still holding the quill.
She blushed faintly and looked down at her hands. "Maybe so," she finally answered in a quiet voice that she wasn't even sure Mikey had heard. Why was she like this? She forced herself to look up and meet Mikey's gaze again. "But only if you promise to catch me if I panic and fall off my broom," she said with her usual grin to lighten the mood a bit.Word count: 385

He watched her. At first he had mainly been teasing, to try and get her out of her ‘books and safer than people’ mentality for a few minutes. But the moment she actually considered it, there was a hint of seriousness in his smile. Then she agreed. Sort of. The minute she mentioned falling off her broomstick, Mikey chuckled, shaking his head as he fell backwards almost off the bench.
“You really do think you're worse at flying than you are. You make it seem like riding a broomstick will end up killing you," he commented. "And yeah," he continued. "I'd catch you of." It was an easy answer that came out almost automatic. After spinning the quill around in his fingers one final time, Mikey set it down on the table entirely. The idea of studying was completely lost to him right now. To be honest, he couldn't have cared less.
The Great Hall was filled with students' noise around him, voices overlapping and plates clattering from further down the tables. But none of that felt important anymore. Glancing back at Olivia again, Mikey found himself grinning. "Because really, flying helps," he told her. His gaze wandered to the ceiling for a brief second before coming back down to look at her. "When you feel like everything becomes too repetitive or too overwhelming or whatever… going for a broom ride clears your head." He made a light gesture with his hand. "It's one of the only times that Hogwarts becomes quiet you know."
After another brief silence, there was a change in his expression, somewhere between amused and impulsive. "We could just go," he suggested casually. "Right now." The idea of going somewhere else wasn't just a casual remark, there was definite sincerity in his words. Turning toward the entrance doors, Mikey cast a glance at her again. "I'm serious. The weather is great, both of us stopped doing anything productive ages ago, and if I don't leave this place soon, I'll probably go insane." There was a soft chuckle from him. "Come on. Just for a while."

Mikey was quick to comment that he thought Olivia thought she was a lot worse at flying than she really was. Making it sound like flying on a broomstick could get her killed. Olivia was about to protest but didn't when Mikey went on and said he would catch her if she fell off.
Although Olivia heard the answer come a little automatically, it still warmed her up. Her gaze once again fell on Mikey's fingers as they twirled the quill one last time before he put it down. Olivia's book lay completely forgotten on the table.
When he looked back at her, he grinned. He assured her that flying really did help. His gaze wandered up to the enchanted ceiling so Mikey hopefully didn't see her little eye roll.
He went on to say that a flight was the perfect way to clear your head if everything was too overwhelming or too repetitive. Olivia knew that Mikey was very sure of himself, so arguing with him wouldn't help a bit. But she silently thought that a quick flight high in the air wasn't exactly quiet. Something that was quiet was a reading session in the library or an evening walk around the lake.
During the silence that followed, Olivia saw Mikey's expression shift to something between impulsive and amused. She braced herself for whatever was coming next.
"We could just go," Mikey suggested casually.
"What? now?" Olivia asked in shock.
"Right now."
Olivia stared at Mikey. "You can't be serious, Mikey. After I've just complained about flying for several minutes, you can't be serious?" she asked, but there was no real force in her resistance.
"I'm serious. The weather is great, both of us stopped doing anything productive ages ago, and if I don't leave this place soon, I'll probably go insane."
The way Mikey was already turning toward the doors, Olivia knew there was no point in trying to stop him.
"Come on. Just for a while."
Olivia sighed and stood up. "Sure," she muttered, a smile playing on her lips. "Although I must remind you that I don't have a broom of my own."Word count: 357

Taking Boredom To New Heights
Mikey seemed far too happy with himself when Olivia finally accepted. “See?” Mikey said immediately as he stood from the bench. “I knew you'd eventually agree!” Mikey then proceeded to gather his books up without any real hurry to do so, despite the obvious fact that he wasn't going back to continue studying anytime soon. He stuffed the textbook under his arm, slung his bag over his shoulder and was already starting to move away from the Great Hall as if nobody else was there to stop them.
That is until Olivia mentioned she didn't own a broom. Mikey stopped. "Oh... Right..." There was just a moment of silence from him as he realized what was wrong. Then he suddenly brightened. "Hold on!" he cried out, pausing momentarily before taking off toward the Ravenclaw tower. Mikey went missing for a good ten minutes. Long enough that she probably wondered if he would be coming back. After which he returned out of breath and with a broom. Not his current broom but an older one. The wood looked well-used, the handle showing wear from years of use. But it was clean.
Mikey moved forward with the broom in hand, fidgeting with it before handing it to her with a slight smile. "Nimbus 1700," he said proudly. "Well, my old Nimbus 1700." A fond expression passed across his face when he spoke those words, before his gaze shifted back to her. "I used this one before I got my current broom," he clarified. "Flies just as perfect as ever." There was only a brief hesitation before he added, "It's yours now."
Mikey ran his hand along the back of the broom, suddenly looking rather uncomfortable with his idea. "You said you didn't have a broom." A smile began to tug at his mouth again. "So now you do." Before she could protest further, the grin grew. "And since you now have a broom, I guess," he said, backing slowly toward the door, "it's time we go flying."

Taking Boredom To New Heights

@Mikey Forville
Olivia thought she had never seen Mikey as happy as he was after Olivia agreed to come with him and fly. He immediately stood up and started gathering his books and Olivia knew for sure that Mikey definitely wouldn't open them for at least an hour, probably two.
When Mikey swung his bag over his shoulder and tucked the books under his arm, Olivia took her own book and followed him. After she reminded Mikey that she didn't own a broom of her own, he stopped abruptly and seemed to think. Then his face suddenly lit up and he shouted: "Hold on!" Olivia barely had time to ask what was going on before Mikey rushed out of the Great Hall.
Olivia laughed to herself as she watched him disappear up the stairs in the entrance hall. She continued through the hall and leaned against the doors just outside. There she waited patiently for Mikey to return.
After three minutes, Olivia began to finger the sleeve of her flannel shirt, glancing at the stairs in anticipation of his reappearance. After six minutes, she began to pace back and forth, her patience wearing thin. After nine minutes, she seriously wondered if Mikey had actually left her. But after ten unnaturally long minutes, Olivia finally saw Mikey's characteristic hair appear at the top of the stairs. He was out of breath and carrying something oblong.
It was only when he was a few feet away from her that she saw what he was carrying. A broom. A very well-used broom. She saw him finger the broom the same way she used to finger her sleeve or her bracelet. Then Mikey did something Olivia could never have expected. He held the broom out to her.
"Nimbus 1700." His voice was proud. "Well, my old Nimbus 1700." His expression was warm as he said the words. Olivia sensed what was coming and she was absolutely terrified by it. Mikey explained that this was the broom he had flown on before he got his current broom but that it still flew perfectly. Then there was a small pause of hesitation before he said what Olivia absolutely did not want him to say:
"It's yours now."
"Mikey, no," Olivia said firmly and made no move to accept the broom.
His hand moved over the broom and for a moment Olivia almost thought he looked a little uncomfortable. But when he repeated Olivia's words about not owning a broom, a smile began to twitch at the corners of his mouth again. Mikey declared again that she now had a broom. Olivia wanted to protest, she wanted to refuse to accept the broom, she wanted to run away. But she didn't have time before Mikey's grin grew and he continued: "And since you now have a broom, I guess..." he started backing towards the doors that led out "...it's time we go flying."
Olivia finally took the broom and just stared at it for a long moment. So long that Mikey might have started to wonder if she didn’t like it. Then she looked up at him and her eyes shone with restrained tears. “Mikey,” she began, her voice warm. “This,” she gestured toward the broom, “is the nicest thing anyone has ever given me.” She hurried her steps toward him and wrapped her arms around him in a hug. "You're the best," she whispered. But when she realized what she was doing, she quickly let go of Mikey, wiped her eyes on her sleeve, and cleared her throat a little. She walked ahead of him toward the doors, quietly swearing to herself. Then she put on her usual smile, half-turned to him, and said,
“Are you coming sometime or do I have to use Accio on you?”Word count: 629
