There was a humble gathering of what seemed to be enthusiastic faces starting to surround the young professor. There was a young girl who had flitted down from the stands and said nothing at all, while the next three to arrive had more than enough to say to each other. Flash didn’t feel particularly annoyed nor lonely in the situation, he fell somewhere in the middle. Not knowing the people who were gathered was negligible. The fact that they seemed to be there intentionally, and were eager to participate, was enough to fuel Flash’s own motivation. He fed off the energy people gave out, and if it hadn’t been appropriately enthusiastic of an atmosphere he would have had to intervene. Since everyone seemed happy, he didn’t bother to speak unless spoken to. There was no need to interject himself somewhere that he wasn’t wanted.

He was, however, addressed eventually. Pericles Dralt was someone Flash already knew through his rudimentary information gathering. He knew the names of all the prefects, and recognized their faces. It was a small enough population that he was surprised more people hadn’t had the foresight to do so themselves. As figures of authority, it was important to know when you were talking to one. He learned that the hard way when he got into a screaming match with Reid Kovacs.

It seemed he was Professor Lian’s assistant for the day, going around making sure everyone was suitably suited. Approaching, he introduced himself properly, though mentioned he ‘could’ be called Peri. What was with all these students giving him their nicknames anyway, wasn’t it most efficient to simply give the name you prefer to be called by and leave it at that? Perhaps it was normal, how was Flash to know. Either way he didn’t intend to use the shortened name unless outright told to.

”Pericles, it’s a pleasure.” Flash would have given his hand, but being gloved it seemed improper somehow. He would have to look into the etiquette of hand shaking while gloved.

Pericles gestured to the antique camera around his neck and asked for any assistance Flash could offer. As much as he would have loved to swoop in and save the day, there was nothing to be done.

”If you want me to look at it I will, but I would be starting from the same spot as you.” That was the generous way to put it. Flash had a great respect for Ravenclaws, so he assumed from the gate that his peer was just as capable about figuring out the function of an unknown machine as he was. ”If you’d like me to look at it while you help the others, I’ll try my best.”

The two were interrupted by the familiar sound of Alan Vanes arriving on the scene, calling Flash’s name. Turning to meet him with joyful anticipation, it quickly turned sour when he saw him bounding over, not just dressed improperly but also bringing along his familiar. The older student in the bandanna had the right idea-- no animals near the experiment. It was asking for disaster. Not to mention he would have to account for Alan’s decision to wear short sleeves. Well, he owed Alan anyway, so he didn’t have much room to get too upset. It had been clearly stated on the flyer, not to mention there was very little information on the flyer besides that important wardrobe detail. It didn’t matter, he could fix this.

”Alan, it’s good to see you, though I would have preferred to see you a bit more prepared.” Flash wore a smile, chiding him rather than reprimanding him. He turned to the prefect in charge beside him. ”Is there another lab coat somewhere we could use, or any kind of sleeves Alan could wear?”

Leaving the task to his superior, Flash turned his attention to Alan’s familiar, Alan himself preoccupied with the sudden realization that he didn’t know what he had signed up for. Flash didn’t know much about animal breeds, but the cat certainly looked striking.

”You should also send your cat off somewhere far away, it’s going to be dangerous here. Perhaps with that other student’s cat?” Flash motioned to the goalposts where a cat was currently trying to convince an owl to play with it. Certainly another cat would be a more willing companion.

Flash followed the professor’s advice and put on the safety glasses in preparation for the experiment to follow. He now had the task of making sure Alan didn’t get himself hurt, but he assumed once the experiment got underway and he understood better, Alan would start enjoying himself. He had a very innocent enjoyment of life, even if he forgot to bother with things like reading two important bolded sentences on a flyer.

Just as the professor started talking to the assembled group more directly, another girl ran up to join them, apologizing for being late. He recognized her quickly, though it had been a long time ago, and a short encounter. Flash never forgot anyone he had been formally introduced to, her name was Katrina Walker. She seemed to be preoccupied with someone she knew much better. His name was Piérre, if he heard it shouted across the pitch correctly. At least he would smile at her brightly if she looked his way.

Notably mentioning @Katrina Walker and @Alan Vanes
Was this some kind of secret cat gathering that Margo wasn't invited to? Two people had brought along their feline friends so far and she was seriously regretting not letting her own hell demon tag along. Margo sighed. Perhaps it was for the best. As much as she loved Hades, he tended to get into trouble, no matter his whereabouts. She would rather be socially starved than have to wrestle a foam covered kitten into the bath, especially one as manipulative as Hades. His big eyes and soft little ears seemed to whisper evil thoughts into her mind. Silly things like 'just one more treat' and 'please let me chase that spider', but somehow she found it extremely difficult to refuse.

Thankfully, she was torn away from her strangely affectionate thoughts by a serious voice warning her against brushing her teeth, of all things. She looked up to the boy in question to meet an angular face with a mop of striking silver hair. His lips stretched into an even smile that she couldn't quite place, and Margo's brows furrowed slightly as she examined him. Was he trying to be funny? She'd hazard a guess that yes, he was, but he was supposed to be a Prefect on duty, and she imaged that there were probably rules against fooling around. Not that she'd blame him for breaking any rules -- whilst some were common sense, she usually prized her independence more than silly things like a dress code. She wondered if this boy did the same... but maybe it was best to address his useful advice before accusing him of mistreating his position of authority.

"Oh, I'm not averse to unique flavours of toothpaste." She smirked at the boy. "If you really insisted, I'd even consider using the foam as soap."

She made her way over to the safety equipment and pulled a pair of goggles over her head, scrunching her nose as it distorted her vision slightly. These safety rules were ones she'd abide by, simply because she needed to follow them in order to see that the experiment went as smoothly as possible. She was just pulling on a thick pair of gloves when Professor Lian addressed the group. She was asking them about some kind of chemical. Now, Margo was far from an expert, but lots of old words had similar roots and meanings, and her muggle knowledge wasn't non-existent, just limited.

"A Hydra is an animal in muggle mythology with lots of heads." She said smugly. As for per...woxy? Well, Doxys are magical little fairies that accumulate in old homes." Fortunately, she was much better at Transfiguration than muggle science.

Margo tugged at the sleeve of her black top uncomfortably. Was it her or was it getting hotter out? She turned to face the nice spring breeze, eyes widening slightly when she caught sight of the red-headed girl who had joined the group. It was Katrina, the girl she'd tried to comfort after she had received frankly awful news regarding her family. She shot the girl a nervous little wave, trying to make it seem like she was totally cool. In reality, she felt guilty for having been a terrible help when the girl needed someone most. Hopefully, she could transform Katrina's opinions of her into something more positive, but she was far too scared of dealing with the past to do anything more about it.

Margo practically stumbled back in surprise when she recognised yet another familiar face. Gosh, was today reuniting with Gryffindors day? Her memories of Alan were much less haunting, to be fair, but that didn't make it any less strange. She felt a little guilty for being so distant at the end of their previous meeting -- chasing after a Niffler should have been fun! However, Margo liked to live a life full of changes, so she shot him a smile and turned to narrow her eyes at the grassy ground. Filling the quidditch pitch with so much foam that it could no longer be used might prove more difficult than she had anticipated. She'd have to leave the chemistry knowledge to the professor, otherwise, there would be no counting the number of things that could go wrong.

Ah... she really felt at home now, didn't she? While Ami had never been much of a Quidditch player, standing at the ready and prepared to do something overwhelmingly dangerous with Cypresse was honestly when she felt most relaxed. She flashed a genuinely excited smile at @Pericles Dralt, vaguely recognizing him from the Headliner office, and her gaze shifted from Cy to Peri as the Transfiguration professor mentioned the camera. "I'm on it, Cy- No-Maj, to the rescue!"

That @Flash Holmwood kid and Dralt were both bent over the camera at this point, so Ami made her way over to the clueless pair, wondering if she could be of any help at all. She knew Dralt was like, pretty much a genius, though, so she really doubted that she could be any help at all. However, her assumptions were dashed away as she caught sight of the camera itself. "Oh!" she exclaimed, standing by the two boys, peering at the camera with interest. The way they were staring at it could only mean that they were either pure-bloods, raised entirely by wizards, or just downright had never seen a camera this old, before. "My dad has one of these, 'though he doesn't use it that much. I think it was my uncle's first, though, but he let me use it all the time. It's more for decoration than anything now, really. Could I...?" she asked gently, pointing at the camera.

Stepping a little closer, she pointed at a silver dial in the upper right-hand corner on the front face of the camera. "I'm not sure how it would work in the wizarding world, to be honest, but usually you want this dial- it's for how fast the lens opens, I think -to be at the max so you get a crispy image. I think. Dralt, have you even used a camera before? Stop looking at it like it's going to bite you. You can look through the uh, little window-thingy, to see what you're taking a picture of. I don't think I need to remind you that you want the person's face in the picture. You can focus the image by turning the silver ring around the lens or the window, and then you push this button right here to take the picture. But you see this black knob? Push that up every time before ya snap one. And after ya get a pic, slide this silver dial- no, wait, uh... slide this tiny button to the left, and while you're holding that, slide the bigger silver dial on the top. That'll move the film along. I think you have about 30 or 35 film thingies that you can take pictures with- at least, that's what my dad's is like."

Wow, how did she know all of that? Her finger tapped against her arms folded over her chest as she tried to recall any other information about the camera that she could remember, but she figured that much was the basics. And really, she was more impressed that she remembered all of that in the first place. It had probably six or seven years since she'd last used the absolutely ancient camera sitting behind her dad's desk in his office, and yet, the second she laid eyes on the camera, she could immediately remember everything she'd learned as a kid.

Huh. That was actually kind of cool, now that she thought about it.

"Good luck, Dralt," she said, nodding at the camera and the other kid with him. "Get my good side, 'kay? Hot, badass scientists make for fantastic front-page stories."

Spotting Alan as a familiar-ish face, along with his absolutely adorable cat, she smiled broadly at her fellow third year, before she moved back closer to Cy. Listening closely to the professor's questions, she bit her lip in thought as some else, @Margo White, answered the question in the most ridiculous way possible. Really, Ami had to laugh- she kind of liked the girl, even if she had gotten the answer completely wrong, if she was honest; but Ami had learned enough in Cy's classes to at least get the general gist of the answer. "It's bleach, isn't it?" she thought out loud, recognizing the name from all the times she'd gotten cuts and scrapes, whether it be from fights or from falling off her skateboard. The dark brown bottle, usually procured from Walgreens or the local drug store, had been a permanent fixture in their Chicago apartment throughout Ami's childhood. "Or, uh... what's it called? Antipesticide? No, wait... anti-something. No-Majs use it to clean shallow cuts; at least, the non-powerful version of it. But that stuff, the stuff we're using today... that's not for cleaning. It's for reactions and stuff. Boom."

Pausing for a moment, Ami realized that she probably sounded like an absolutely pretentious little asshole for rattling off such random information- but at this point, it was probably a little too late to turn back. After all, you didn't get tutored by Cy for a whole year without messing around with hydrogen peroxide at least once or twice- and with that, there was always a gratuitous chemistry lesson thrown in. Pity that she didn't remember more of it, though. "Isn't there a joke about this, too? Like, uh... two chemists walk into a bar, the first man orders some H2O, and the second man orders some H2O too, except the second man dies? Maybe that's a little morbid... but yeah. Two hydrogen atoms with two oxygen atoms, so it's one hydrogen per oxygen- hydrogen peroxide... right, Cy?"

Piérre snapped at the sound of his name, glancing towards Kat, who was brightly making her way to the group. It was good that another member of his house had decided to come along for the ride. Piérre would have been a little sad if he had been one of the only Gryffindors in a sea of Ravenclaws, Slytherins, and a Hufflepuff. Yet, in the midst of the excitement, there was a small festering in the back of his mind. What was it with the two of them. It was as if they were magnetically attracted somehow. As if Piérre was in the right place at the right time, and Kat was there as well. The lad couldn't help but remember the incident that had taken place at the great lake, which was currently sparkling black in the sunlight. It wasn't like he was going to forget that event anytime soon.

Well, despite how these latent thoughts seemed to make themselves known in the back of Piérre's mind, there was still a smile to be found on the Britalian's face. "Hiya Kat! Heck yeah, I'm excited! I heard about crazy inflating foam and I'm pumped!" Noticing Margo White and waving to her as well, and laughing aloud at her little comment about elephants.

Miss Cy began to talk about the experiment, and Piérre listened intently, paying attention to everything that his favorite teacher said. Of course, Piérre could see the dish soap, food colouring, the Potassium Iodine, and the Hydrogen Peroxide, and Miss Lian posed the question of what Hydrogen Peroxide was and what elements make it up.

Margo White made a comment about Hydras and Doxies, and Piérre nodded, smiling giddily. "I'd pay to see that!" After a pause, he mused aloud, kind of directing the comment towards Kat and back at Margo. "What would you get if you bred a Doxie and a Hydra...?"

But back to the actual question, all silliness aside. Piérre was overly familiar with the effects of Hydrogen Peroxide, mostly because it had been used as an cheap, yet effective, antiseptic to treat his scratches and cuts when he fell out of a tree, got in fights, and when he had almost drowned in a rapids. Alas, he was not as familiar with the elements, especially since he had been pulled out of Muggle school before he had been 8 years old. That did not stop him from reading and absorbing information, no matter how abstract and useless it could be, however, and he began to hum, thinking about the roots of the word. Once again, his native language came into helpfulness. Hydrogen was the first element. Peroxide was a little more complex. Oxide meant that the substance had to be connected to oxygen, but per... why Per?

Another student responded before Piérre did, and the Britalian stared at her with his brows creased in thought. Hearing the joke about H2O and H2O2 caused a little chuckle to come from the Britalian, but he paid attention more to her scientific explanation; that there was an oxygen for every hydrogen. That seemed to clear up a lot of confusion.

"Antiseptic." Piérre continued where the Hufflepuff left off, rocking back and forth and smiling at her. Another student interested in useless trivia. "Something that can kill the germs or bacteria that can cause sickness and infection. Um, I mean, my Muggle mum never used bleach, that's kind of dangerous... but she used to use Hydrogen Peroxide all the time when I fell out of trees and banged myself up when I was climbing! But..." Piérre's brow creased and his lip tightened, giving himself a sort of silly face for complete and utter concentration. "If there is an Oxygen molecule for every Hydrogen molecule, and there takes two Oxygens and Hydrogens paired together to make Hydrogen Peroxide... Then can't it be simplified to one Oxygen and Hydrogen and then named Hydrogen Monoxide, like Carbon Monoxide?"

Perhaps he was completely misguided, but in the Britalian's mind, the concept seemed to make sense. Perhaps his words were not completely formulated correctly... but he had tried. Maybe Miss Cy would understand?

Well, Piérre hoped that she would...

If anyone wants to join past this point, feel free! Just say that you came late.
Nodding at the newcomer, @Katrina Walker, to acknowledge her presence, Cy learned against the first barrel in the row labeled dish soap, crossing her arms. "Heya! Don't forget to grab a pair of goggles," she reminded her, just in case - not that she could tell if something was wrong, but that was why she had Pericles, and also a couple of others who seemed fully willing to help.

As some of the participants began to talk among themselves, she noticed @Flash Holmwood commenting on the woeful under-preparedness of one @Alan Vanes. "Here," she said in the direction of their voices, shrugging off her own lab coat - she had enough skin coverage worn underneath it that she didn't need its extra protection. Not for this, at least. And, well, she wasn't exactly on the tall side either, so it should've borderline fit anyone over four feet and maybe ten inches. "Someone should probably catch that if he didn't... strike one, hon, try not to make it again."

Then there was still the matter of the cat to deal with. She pursed her lips, thinking - but she'd heard Ami instructing Leo to go hang out with her owl. He'd complain about it later and probably demand extra food, but he certainly had the ability to look after a couple more cats. "Diogenes!" Cy called, cupping a hand around her mouth, prompting a loud and maybe slightly indignant squawk carried over to her by the wind. "Look after the cats, would you?" The meaning of the resultant, irritated chirp sounded more clear than ever, something along the lines of I'm not your babysitter, [redacted], but he'd probably do it anyway. "Send your cat off with Diogenes, would you? He's moody, but he's responsible. He won't let them get hurt."

The first person to answer her question - or to try to, at least - was @Margo White. Cy responded with a smile - well, she might not have gotten the answer right, but under normal circumstances her way of picking apart the word would've probably resulted in a rather good answer. Just... maybe a little scientific common sense would be nice to add into the mix. "Not exactly, no," she replied, "but a good inference. We're not dealing with magical creatures here, unfortunately. Usually, if something's related to a hydra, the hydra would be a suffix, meaning it comes at the end of the word. When it's a prefix of hydro, it tends to have something to do with water, like hydropower, which is energy that comes from the sea tides. Anyone else want to hazard a guess?"

Fortunately, she was not met by silence, which pleased her. @Ami Procoppio was the one to give her the correct answer - and in enthusiastic detail, too, which was to be expected. Cy's brand of tutoring rarely involved lecturing, especially for someone who really didn't learn that way. Hands-on was the way to go, and it seemed to serve Ami's memory pretty well. She nodded in agreement. "It's not exactly bleach, which is made up of different molecules than hydrogen peroxide, but they basically do the same thing. You got the chemical formula right, though, so great job! A hydrogen peroxide molecule is two hydrogen molecules bonded with two oxygen molecules. That's why it's written H2O2: the H stands for hydrogen, the O stands for oxygen, and the number after each letter represents how many of each kind of atom there are. H2O, as I think I've probably told you guys, is the chemical formula for water, which has two hydrogen atoms bonded with one oxygen atom. That's why the joke works - with one extra oxygen molecule added into the mix, it becomes hydrogen peroxide."

Before Cy could correct her young tutee about the pronunciation of antiseptic, though, another student of hers answered for her - @Piérre Marchonné, an equally enthusiastic and sometimes borderline hyperactive first year. "Antiseptic is right! It kills bacteria and other harmful things that could get into your cuts and cause an infection. Usually you use very diluted hydrogen peroxide for that, which is hydrogen peroxide mixed with a bunch of water, so that it's not as strong, but some people also use it to bleach hair, in which case it'd be less diluted. The hydrogen peroxide we're using today is extremely strong, so try not to touch it."

His question was a valid one, and one she'd actually wondered before. But fear not! She had an answer. "Well, see, the prefix mono- implies that there's only one oxygen atom. Since there's actually two oxygen atoms in each hydrogen peroxide molecule, that would be misleading. So instead, we say hydrogen peroxide, because like you said, there's one oxygen atom per hydrogen atom.

"However, you can't simplify H2O2 into H1O1. It'd be a different molecule then. See, when atoms bond, they don't just sit next to each other. There's a structure to them." She waved her wand, muttering something nearly inaudible under her breath - and then a slowly spinning model of the molecule itself projected itself from the tip of her wand, a peculiarly structure shape, color coded and three-dimensional. "This is what the molecule looks like. The red represents oxygen, the white represents hydrogen. See, since there's a bond between the oxygen atoms, if you split them apart they won't be the same molecule - that's called hydroxide. Carbon monoxide is called that because each of its molecules only have one oxygen atom. Make sense?"

Hopefully she's explained clearly enough for them to get an idea of what hydrogen peroxide was, plus answering their questions. Now she flicked her wand with another mutter to retract the model. "So, we know what hydrogen peroxide is now - a chemical, H2O2. You all know what dish soap is. We just have potassium iodide left. It's not a common thing, so I won't make you guess - as it says in the name, it's just a potassium - yes, that's the stuff in bananas - and iodine, but the bonding's kind of complicated, since the iodine is an ion, meaning that its number of electrons and its number of protons aren't the same. All you really need to know for this is that potassium iodide will be the catalyst, or the thing that makes the whole experiment happen, for this demonstration."

"So, before I get to what the demonstration actually is, does anyone already know what they came here for?"
Don't worry, hon, as long as you're comfortable with a load of science coming your way later OOC we're all good here! Also, if anyone can't see the linked model, I can try to screenshot some of it for you - the website I linked lets you spin a 3D model of the molecule around. Play around with it if you're interested, it's pretty cool!

If you want some more explanation of how bonds work (aka extra science, because I'm a nerd):
Reducio
A balanced oxygen atom has eight electrons because it has eight protons as well (by definition). If you know about electron shells, which are explained in the first lesson of Transfiguration, you'll know that electrons are often organized into groups called shells, where if you fill up the inner shell the electrons overflow to the next shell. The innermost shell holds two electrons, while the second shell can hold eight. Now, the electrons on the outermost shell are called valence electrons, because they often give the atom its properties. Atoms are always looking to balance their shells out, so that they have a FULL outer shell. (this is why noble gases never really react with any other elements - they have a full outer shell already!) When atoms bind to each other, a lot of times what they do is they share electrons - two of the electrons, one originally from each atom, belong to the orbit of both of the atoms, which ties them together. This kind of bond is called a covalent bond.

Hydrogen atoms only have one proton and one electron. To fill their only shell, the innermost shell, they're looking for just one extra electron. Oxygen atoms already filled up their innermost shells, which leaves them with six to fill the second shell. Since the second shell can hold eight electrons in total, and 8-6=2, the oxygen atom wants two more electrons to complete the shell.

So, when you have an H2O2 molecule, that's two different oxygen atoms, attached to each other, and each attached to one different hydrogen atoms. How does that work? Well, since the oxygen atom wants two extra electrons, and the hydrogen atom wants one extra molecule, the problem is easily solved. When a hydrogen atom bonds with an oxygen atom, one of the oxygen atom's valence electrons bonds with the hydrogen atom, which 'gives' the hydrogen atom one more electron. Then, the one electron that the hydrogen atom already has is also bonded to the oxygen atom, effectively 'giving' the oxygen atom one more electron. Imagine that this happens to two different sets of one oxygen atom and one hydrogen atom. Well, then, the hydrogen atom is satisfied, because its only shell, which can have only two electrons, has been filled. But the oxygen atom still needs one more electron to be happy, right? So, the oxygen atoms each bond to each other, 'giving' each other an extra electron. There we go! Now everyone's happy.

@Flash Holmwood, @Cypresse Lian, Tiger & Diogenes
He heard the voice of the professor almost as soon as he had finished his first sentence as he got the instruction to put on the safety equipment such as the goggles and the gloves, which he was already in the process of equipping, "O-On it, Professor", he chirped, wiggling his fingers into the safety gloves for a reason he was not sure about but would most likely soon find out. After that however after that she soon began to showcase some containers with labels that he never heard about before. What those would be? No idea, so he rather stayed quiet as he watched the questionnaire unfold; science really wasn't his thing.

When Flash greeted him back, the Slytherin pointed out the fact that the third year clearly did not come prepared for the experiment that was planned, which was embarrassing enough to spread a blush over his face as a guilty look crossed his face making him seen like a child that was caught stealing a cookie from the jar on the counter top without asking. For a moment he would focus on calming his own nerves, before he gave the hint of a nervous laugh. "I d-didn't expect it t-to be some d-dangerous experiment, I th-thought it w-would be r-real elephant t-toothpaste", he would admit to his friend in a hushed whisper that would only be audible to him, unless someone was right next to the pair and listening along to this. Flash would ask for a reserve lab coat so that the Gryffindor could wear something that would protect his skin from possible dangers this experiment might entail and a mix of worry and excitement for this dangerous experiment took over. He had no interest in the actual scientific aspect of this but only on what it would do. Was this the kind of muggle magic @Willow Anderson had mentioned during their picnic?

Flash also lectured him on bringing his cat, told him to send Tiger away and it made the young teen frown slightly. But Flash was right, he did not want anything to happen to Tiger and was about to send him away when the professor spoke up. She took off her own lab coat, handing it towards where she suspected Flash and Alan to be and her accuracy was astonishing. Gently Alan reached out to pluck the lab coat from her hands and muttered a polite thank you to the professor before he put it on. It fit him well, but was a bit big for his lithe form and short height.

Alan did as told and sent Tiger off with the owl, after giving him a few head scratches and telling him that apparently he was a real scientist now. He grinned as he watched the Bengal run off, trying to get Diogenes to play with him. Then he tried to focus on what was being said, but he did not get anything at all. He would try to nod along, but truly he felt lost in what was being discussed.

"Uh-", he tried but instantly shook his head. He had no idea how to answer any of those questions and looked around to find out whether any other student was better at this than he himself. He saw a few familiar faces, but he just stood there waiting for someone else, someone smarter to speak up and bring some clarity into this. Was it a bad idea to come here? Possibly not because he still wanted to see the experiment happen, even if it wouldn't be as cool as trying to brush an elephant's teeth.

Flash’s inquisitive train of thought while looking at the camera was interrupted by an older girl in attendance, one that seemed to know Professor Lian the best by the way they had been chatting. It seemed she recognized the old piece of technology, so Flash was glad to leave it to her. It would have been a mess if it was given to him and he had found a way to break it somehow. Old technology like that tended to not hold one’s hand in its upkeep and maintenance, more user-friendly technology for the general populace didn’t become the norm until rather recently, as far as Flash could tell. His grandfather’s house had all kinds of things like that, but he was always warned not to touch them, in fear that his clumsy child hands would destroy the antiques. His grandfather and father had that in common, they didn’t like to throw things away, even if it was junk.

She started to explain the function, but Flash inadvertently tuned her out. He did know the two well, and didn’t expect she was talking to him anyway. Not only that, but when would he ever have an occasion to use the knowledge she was providing? Even if he listened, he would have trouble retaining the information, he had an annoyingly selective brain, it wouldn’t latch on to just anything. Like many of his less admired subjects, her words eventually started sounding like white noise.

Frankly, chemistry was something he was curious about but had very little experience in. It wasn’t a topic that was covered in his old school, nor his private tutoring at home. He was a complete novice at it, though he hadn’t made any move to out himself as such. Instead he silently listened to the older and more knowledgeable students to pipe up with answers to Professor Lian’s questions. He was someone who learned by piecing things together anyway, so through their conversations he started to understand the basics of the experiment, and what he should expect. Toxic chemicals that needed to be handled carefully, and a big burst of some kind of inflating foam, hopefully something that would hit ‘world records’.

Flash was glad when Alan was quickly taken care of, his familiar being given something to do away from the blast zone, as well as the professor lending him her own coat to put on. Even though it didn’t have much to do with anything, it reminded him of the first time he had met Alan, as he had given Flash his robe on that occasion. Funnily enough, as a way of hiding his misbehavior from the professors. The memory made him realize that perhaps he was being a bit harsh on Alan for being so unprepared, much like how he had over-reacted when Ross did the same. Flash must have just had a pet peeve for such a thing, though he had only just then realized it. He gave Alan a warm smile now that he had put on his protective gear properly.

”Well done, it always pays to take precautions.” Flash tried to soften the blow of some of his more chastising comments from earlier. Even though he couldn’t empathize with Alan’s blindly going to an event unprepared, he was glad he righted himself so quickly.

Among the talk of chemicals and atom bonds, Flash had become a bit lost again, but he honed in on the professor’s words to try to understand. She even showed a model of what the atom she was talking about looked like, but Flash didn’t even really have the basis for knowledge on what an atom really was. He knew, basically, as much as a primary school textbook might say about it. In year five, he was starting to learn the basics to things like natural sciences, but it was a bit hard to grasp, being told it all of the sudden. He was supposed to believe the structure being shown by Cy’s wand was microscopically floating around inside of him? That it was everywhere, a building block for everything? It was nearly as hard to grasp the concept of as magic itself.

With that though he was content to learn as much as he could by listening quietly. In a more one-on-one situation he might have asked prying questions to grasp a real understanding, but the point of the project wasn’t to teach each student to have a strong grasp of chemistry, it was to make big foam. Flash at least understood that part, that because of chemicals, there could be unexpected reactions when they were introduced to each other. That much was common sense, it was even a bit like people. There were certain types that if introduced to the right environment, had predictable results. Knowing what kinds of people worked best together, and which ones would cause an explosive reaction, was part of Flash’s main interest, after all. The gathered group, for instance, all seemed like the type to work well together, so he didn’t foresee anything going terribly wrong, unless by pure accident or carelessness. He would have to keep a close eye on Alan.

Ami beamed widely at Cy's generous praise, basking in the honeyed words that fell upon her ears. If there was anything to take away from her time here at Hogwarts, it was that her love language was definitely words of affirmation. Coming from a family that wasn't really sentimental, nor one that really praised people, in general, the Hufflepuff tended to thrive under any sort of praise or compliment. Naturally, she tried to play off just how pleased she usually was with some sort of snarky, arrogant comment and a playful wink, but secretly, on the inside, she was always pleased beyond belief. Such great praise from her idol? It was a wonder that Ami didn't faint right then and there.

She listened patiently as Cypresse explained the logistics and details of a hydrogen peroxide molecule, her mind starting to drift as information that she'd already learned surrounded her again. Rather, instead of paying much attention to Cy, her gaze wandered over to the stands of the pitch, where her cat seemed to be enjoying himself, lounging lazily on the seats. Their eyes met, and Ami narrowed her eyes at the lazy little scoundrel, before grinning at him sweetly. While the two were far from twins of any sort, they certainly did seem to have some sort of neural or telepathic connection that many wizards, witches, and wixes seemed to have with their chosen familiars. They had the same rambunctious energy, the same spontaneity, the same Idiot Juice running through their veins... truly, Leo was simply Ami in cat form. Or maybe Ami was Leo in human form? Whatever. Pretty much the same thing, right?

Ami's attention turned back to Cy's explanation, though, as the young professor pulled up a model of the molecule... and just as quickly, her attention faded. It was a cool trick, to be sure, but it was also a move that Cy had pulled on all her Transfiguration classes at some point or another. Without even listening properly, she already knew that Cy would launch into some sort of explanation that was far too complicated for their dumb lizard brains to comprehend, and then continue on to more material that was far too complicated for their dumb lizard brains to comprehend. If Cy was a dolphin, the group in front of her was, at most, maybe a gorilla, at best, thanks to Pericles' giant head and the brain rattling around inside of it. If they were taking an average, though, with Ami's rat brain playing outlier, it was maybe an octopus at best.

Why was she thinking about animal brains? They were doing chemistry, not biology. Ami shook her head slightly as if the physical action would clear any evidence that mentally, she was all over the place. Her gaze followed Cy's words to the potassium iodine, nodding as she followed along with where the professor was going. Catalysts... ah, yes. She'd seen this experiment before, of course, as she'd had a shoddy American education in lieu of attending a proper British primary school. While catalysts certainly helped reactions along much quicker, they weren't reactants, which Ami found fascinating. Truly, she strived to be a catalyst in her own life- always helping things along (preferably some sort of drama, gossip, or rumor), but never getting sucked up into the petty little bits that tended to consume most high schoolers' lives. Were they at an actual high school? No. Were they American? Only a few. Did Ami still treat Hogwarts like it was a stereotypical American high school, nonetheless? Obviously.

"It's an experiment," Ami blurted out, seeing as no one else really wanted to answer Cy's questions. "Well, I mean, duh. But when you mix all that stuff together, it poofs up... like when you plug up the sink and wash your hands a bunch, with soap- like, duh; if you don't use soap, you're gross -and all those bubbles foam up. That's what the dish soap does, all the bubbles in the dish soap make everything expand and stuff." Pausing, partially to catch her breath, and partially for dramatic effect, and partially because adding dialogue tags ups the word count and the Powers That Be needed more words, Ami pointed at the tub of potassium iodine, even if Cy couldn't see it. "And that banana idiot- sorry, potassium iodine -stuff, that makes it all go super fast so we're not just standing here for like, an hour."

Glancing at all the other students, she frowned slightly, wondering why they were all so quiet. A couple of them were chatting, but really, it was such a quiet bunch of students. Maybe all nerds were just quiet? Well, no, that's couldn't be right... Cy was a nerd, and she was far from quiet. Scratching the back of her head, Ami could feel the silence pushing in on her, and she knew she simply had to talk, just to fill the awkward void that was surrounding them all. "Personally," she said, with an air of arrogance, "I want to pour the antiseptic. Acid is always cool, y'know? I mean, I'm not aiming for like a whole Harley Quinn transformation, of course. I don't even know if that was hydrogen peroxide... but acid is still like, hella cool."

Science, at least in the Muggle sense, was something that Piérre was not especially strongly versed in. Though he was a decent student in many of his classes, Transfiguration, while challenging, was also one of his favorites. There was something amusing in the idea of changing a person into a bottle or a bottle into a frog, a frog into a pencil... so on and so forth. Most of what Cy was saying was flying over his young and rather flighty head. After all, though he was eager to learn, his mind was a sieve for the most part, a trait rather alarming in the minds of Ravenclaws.

As to why he had come here...

"I came for the blowing up of certain things to form into the general form of foam!" Piérre faked an intelligent serenade before rubbing his hands and letting out a low, poorly performed, evil laugh. This was followed up by a few obviously comedic coughs. "Not good at the evil chuckle thing, sorry about that!"

But anyways, that was most of the reason why Piérre had wanted to participate in the current event. He just liked to do things spontaneously, whenever a whimsy hit him. Being unable to act on a whimsy made Piérre a little nervous, truth be told. He liked to be free to do what he wanted, when he wanted, and how he wanted the events to take place. This was not to be confused with pompous nature, or selfishness. Indeed, Piérre was rather flamboyant, but he was not snotty or snooty. Having read tales of fantasy and great and noble individuals, he had always had a sour stomach when it came to those who thought that they were all-deserving and overly pompous. They made interesting characters... but very two dimensional people who were very aggravating and difficult to interface with in real life.

Piérre hummed to himself a bit, rocking back and forth and swaying with the wind. At this point, he wasn't even listening to most of the people who were talking; he was far more intrigued by the sensation of the outdoors and the freedom that it offered to his undeserving self. Who really deserved to enjoy the sunlight? It was a gift given to all and yet recognized by few. It was an ability that not many could properly enjoy; the ability to sunbathe or to enjoy and smile at the light that carressed their forms. An air of freedom, an air of cleansing. And after everything that could happen, everything that had happened, to both the Britalian and to any other soul which found themselves troubled by their lives or their current struggles, this was something that could never be corrupted. This was something that would remain pure forever.

"It's a really nice day, huh Kat?" Piérre asked subconsciously. It was a simple, innocuous statement. It never even crossed Piérre's mind that he had spoken. It was something; it was something, perhaps the delicateness of the day itself. It was something that almost brought tears too Piérre's eyes. He had loved enjoying days like this on a picnic with the Bianchis. He loved time with the simple things. Though he had many fears; indeed, extreme Aquaphobia was one of them, that didn't mean that spending time along the bank of a crick or stream, if Piérre knew himself to be safe, was unenjoyable. The forest was his playground. Nay, the world was his playground; he was just the pawn running about the board, breaking rules left and right as he saw fit in his game of life.

There was a whisper on the wind. It was almost like a silent summons. Something, some essence, something was calling. Whispering to him. A sort of peaceful inner calm. A sense of absolute content.

The strange floating model spun slowly as Margo squinted at it. She didn't think it very closely resembled antiseptic, but maybe that was just her. She was quite content to sit back and let other people be the smart ones. Okay... so maybe she did enjoy being the centre of attention. This, however, was an academic situation. It was hard for her to take the lead in such circumstances. Whilst she liked learning, she'd already come to terms with the fact she'd never be the best at it. That's why she made an effort to stand out in other ways. For now, ensuring that the Quidditch Pitch turned into a spectacle was enough. She wondered if any of the students were Quidditch players. Ah, the look on their faces at a foamed pitch would be hilarious.

Margo was yanked away from her thoughts by the professor starting to explain the different letters in water - which was supposedly called H2O. Even though Margo was good at spelling, she didn't really understand. She thought the red molecules were oxygen and the white ones were hydrogen, but she still didn't see how that linked to antiseptic. She studied the red and white atoms closer, thanking Merlin himself that colour existed. She couldn't imagine how Professor Lian managed to produce such a vibrant red without seeing it. It obviously took control that Margo definitely did not have. And, even better, Lian's explanations were formed in such a way that Margo almost understood! H2O2 was completely different to Oxygen and Hydrogen because they were bonded together. Just like a cat wouldn't be a cat with wings and scales. Margo beamed at her newfound academic prowess. Once they foamed up the pitch she might just give the professor a hug.

Pierre, it seemed, had been amused by her epic failure at answering Prof. Lian's question. Margo smiled in victory. Making other people laugh was just as good an achievement as getting the answer right... spoken like a true academic, she was sure. But what would come of a doxy mixed wth a hydra?.. assuming hydras existed, of course. However, in a world of magic, Margo wasn't too fazed by what was supposedly impossible.

"Sounds like an experiment worth pursuing, Pierre! Scales and wings, fangs and big eyes... who knows, really!" She grinned.

The joke about hydrogen monoxide and peroxide flew completely over Margo's head, which she couldn't say she was happy about. She practically lived to be witty. But even the wittiest of people couldn't understand everything, she supposed. Unfortunately, the girl who came up with the joke seemed to be both loud and smart. Damn. Margo decided she too could show her intelligence in some way - by answering the Professor’s question. This time, with what she hoped was the right answer.

“We came here to beat the record!” Margo said enthusiastically. “But I don’t know whether that means we just have more ingredients than anybody has before or we use more of the catalywhatsit.”

Margo looked at Professor Lian hopefully. She had been about to blurt out her desire to ruin the pitch for all future flying lessons but... somehow she felt as if that wasn’t the answer the woman was looking for. She couldn’t fathom why. Lack of flying would increase student safety tenfold, and surely a professor would appreciate her selfless thinking. Hm. Perhaps Margo had just unknowingly picked up on the academic vibe. She wouldn’t want to ruin the intelligent aura surrounding most of the students - which she was trying vey hard not to be excluded from. Margo picked at the tight black material of her sleeves. Was it her or was it getting hot out?

Wow, I'm so sorry it's been a while! *Excitedly claps hands together* Still got a fascination with chemistry, though. Love your explanations! Also, that site is E P I C! My chemistry teacher used to use something similar but this one's better. Building molecules is surprisingly therapeutic.
