The Westbriges are an old, English pureblooded family that reside in London, and have came to expect excellence from anybody carrying the Westbridge surname. Generation after generation of Westbridge soared to great heights within the ministry, holding many respectable positions, and ever adding to the vast Gringotts vault that the Westbridge family possessed. This ambition was what lead the Westbridge family, and lead to every Westbridge family being placed in Slytherin.

Despite the family being old, and acting in a traditional manner, they hold no prejudice towards non-purebloods, instead many Westbridges find themselves intrigued by muggleborns, they are very ignorant to their issues and a muggle life style, but holding no malice towards them. This attitude is mostly relevant to the main line of the family, though some branches still hold slightly more traditional attitudes. Edwin’s mother's side of the family are much more traditionally aligned, freely associating themselves with muggleborn haters, though Edwins mother herself does not share those views. Historically though, the Westbridges very much remained neutral through any conflict or issue, only openly associating themselves with the winning side once the outcome was certain.

Muggle influences were present in Edwins upbringing, mainly due to him living in London, where it is unavoidable for him to know of some muggle concepts. Though his understanding of these things clearly stem from a wizards explanations, but he is not completely ignorant to muggle inventions, and ideas.

Edwin himself is the son of two highly respected Aurors, his mother retiring when she gave birth to Edwin and his father continuing to work despite his old age. Edwin is the youngest of four, and the youngest by a sizable margin, given that his parents had him at an old age. The age gap is so great that when Edwin was born, two of his siblings were already well into their Hogwarts years, and the third son was only a couple of years away from starting.

Given that he was born to such old parents, Edwin experienced a very different upbringing to his siblings. Whilst the Westbridge work ethic, and ambition was instilled into his siblings, Edwin was treated as the golden child, raised without a worry for his future or any sense of urgency. Where his brothers fuelled this work ethic into early success in the ministry, quickly climbing to high ranking postions in various departments, Edwin grew slothful even at a young age. Any tutor that dared to try and push Edwin was immediately dismissed, if Edwin fell asleep in a class, it was the fault of a tutor. Before the age of eight, Edwin had went through well over a dozen tutors, all of which unfairly dismissed because the youngest Westbridge simply refused to work. Whilst the boy had a clear natural talent that his siblings lacked, he simply did not take to any kind of work, preferring to nap through his lessons or occupy his mind otherwise.

This eventually lead to Edwin’s mother personally taking over his tutoring, but him being coddled and so much younger than his siblings lead to him having a strained relationship with his brothers

Edwin was perhaps around 5 years old when he first demonstrated magic. He had a favourite toy, which was a fake snitch, and his second eldest brother placed this toy far out of his reach, on top of a high shelf. His brother watched and laughed as Edwin jumped about, desperately reaching for it, until suddenly the shelf snapped in half, the toy dropping down onto the floor, just in front of Edwin. Much to Edwins joy, his brother was also lectured, and told off, as they assumed he had caused the damage to the shelf.
