Next in line was the broom racing section. First, Frederick had gone to the Quidditch station, the sport he was already quite familiar with, just to warm up and start the day. For Buckley, playing his favorite sport was always fun, but today, perhaps the real excitement would come from trying something new, a different sport. So, he made his way toward the line for the mini obstacle course specially set up for the event, and was pleasantly surprised to find himself standing behind three fellow Gryffindors. “Hello!” Fred greeted them politely. “And good luck!”

The boy had never taken part in a race before and barely knew the rules, so he figured it was a good thing he was fourth in line for that round. That way, he could learn something while waiting for his turn. He peeked over the the shoulders of the three standing in front of him, shifting his torso from side to side to get a better view, trying to map out some sort of strategy to make it through the course, secretly hoping his Quidditch experience would help him somehow.

Finally, when his turn came, Frederick felt a flutter in his stomach, that familiar sensation of doing something for the very first time. Overall, though, he felt good. He was having the time of his life, and he faced the challenge ahead with confidence. Buckley mounted his broom and shot forward at the very first signal, both hands wrapped firmly around the handle, brows furrowed in concentration as he focused on the obstacles ahead, his competitive side driving him to give it his absolute best.

Broom racing seemed fun like seemed really fun. I said goodbye to Mika who was going to duelling I presume and went down to the area. That day I ignored the fact that I had no ability to fly whatsoever and went down to the Broom Racing area. There were lots of people there and I was quite frightened because what if I made a mistake. I smoothed down my pink tank top and played with my locket. My outfit was amazing today. I wore a pink tank with Jean shorts. On my feet I wore white converse. And my hair was in a bubble briad. DONT make a fool out of yourself. I thought forcefully. It suddenly dawned on me that I had no idea on even HOW to broomrace. My body tensed up. But I had to remind myself that everything was going to be ok. But making a fool out of myself was not going to happen. I was going to try to win. I didn't know anyone who was at broomraceing. I knew Mika was at duelling and I passed there coming to broomraceing and I saw Angel there too. Of course I wasn't where my friends were why would I be. I gave a warm smile and shouted UP! Thank gosh the Broom flew into my hand.

ROUND II MODERATION

The first three players were celebrating their victories as a larger group of players approached the obstacles. Flying on a Comet 180 was first-year Gryffindor @Persephone Grimsbane. She easily avoided the snare—with much of broom racing, the devil was in the details—but today, the devil had nothing on Grimsbane.

She may have been nervous at the start, but the trees were also a cinch for the first year. Maybe the Gryffindor broom racing team was in her future?

But her final obstacle was the giant squid, and the little guy was feeling quite tufted that he had let three players escape his suckers. And before Grimsbane could taste victory, she was snatched out of the air by a giant tentacle.

Persephone is in the baby squid's clutches! They grow up so fast ;}

@Skylar Blue, another brave Gryffindor first-year, took flight on her Nimbus 1001. The Devil's Snare gave her no issues—it was surprisingly tame today.

But the trees would leave large bruises on Blue. She hit not one but two on her way through the small forest.

Maybe the squid was distracted, swinging Grimsbane around? Or had the tree collisions shaken Blue's confidence? Snatch! Another tentacle, another racer. The squid was two for two!

The squid takes a second victim!

A third Gryffindor first-year zoomed into the race on his Nimbus 1500. Does @Maximilianus Kenneally Vidler have what it takes to avoid the same fate as his two Gryffindor peers? Once again, the Devil's Snare was limply waving a vine here or there, and Vidler was able to fly past it with ease.

Next, he launched into the forest, avoiding every tree. Maybe flying was a talent of his?

But the final test was the squid. Surely, the little guy had had his fun with two racers? Would he let Vidler pass? Swipe! Nope, another tentacle, another racer bites the dust!

The squid is three-for-three!

It was a first-year Gryffindor party! Next up was @Frederick Buckley, who wished his competitors good luck. That luck was wasted on them, but hopefully Buckley saved enough for himself. He was sporting a Silver Arrow, too—an advanced broom! The vines were probably asleep at this point, so no worries for Buckley there.

Then he made all the trees look like mere twigs. Maybe he had some luck left in him.

But the real obstacle was the giant squid. Okay, really, now, three racers was enough. The squid would probably let Buckley through, right? WRONG. A fourth racer was caught!

And finally, there was @Tina Carille, the lone Ravenclaw of the bunch. She only had a school broom held together with hopes and dreams, but here, anything could happen. She—surprise—avoided the Devil's Snare.

Then she flew easily through the forest; no concussions for Carille.

Now, maybe the squid had a vendetta against Gryffindor. Maybe four was the magic number. Maybe Carille would actually pass the finish line—nah, the squid pulled her from the air in triumph. He had truly won this round!

Skylar was doing good, or at least she had thought. The devil's snare had prove to be little trouble as she flies right through, evading it with ease. The girl had been surprised at her successful attempt, gaining confidence as she continued.

Then she hit a tree. Not one, but two. There were barely any trees in the small forest, yet somehow Skylar managed to hit half of them. She still makes it out somehow, minus the bruises that are forming along her body. She was going to use the bruise removal paste later, that is for sure.

Last but not least, there was the baby squid. In front of her was one of her friends, Poppy. Skylar was about to cheer on her fellow Gryffindor friend when suddenly a tentacle reaches up and drags her down. Before she could react, Skylar feels something wrap around her leg as well. With a yelp, she goes down and was yanked off her broom.

"What the bloodyhe—" She manages to get out before she was dunked in the water. Skylar emerges gasping and spluttering, the baby squid's tentacles wrapped around her waist. She was soaked from head to toe, her broom lost somewhere.

Above her, Max also tries to fly past the squid— only to also get dragged down. Following Max was another Gryffindor, one that had greeted her at the starting line. Skylar faintly recognizes the student from one of the Quidditch matches, so perhaps he was a Quidditch player. But unfortunately, he was grabbed by the tentacles as well.

Four Gryffindors now at the mercy of the baby squid. What are they feeding this creature? Skylar thinks to herself incredulously. But above them, a Ravenclaw tries to fly through. Skylar faintly recognizes her, but she cannot pinpoint where. Maybe the squid just has a personal vendetta against Gryffindors, so Ravenclaw may actually have chance. But nope, the squid takes her down as well.

Looking around at her fallen comrades and a very smug looking squid, Skylar lets out light-hearted laugh. "Well, fancy seeing you all here! What a nice little gathering we have. Might as well get to know each other, aye? Name's Skylar, but some of you know me already."

He was focused like a laser. No vines or trees were getting him today! He barely had the time to take in those he would be racing with before they were off.

The vines were tricky. Last time he had to face them, they got him before he even managed to blink. But today would be different. He flew as fast as he could, trying to stay clear of them. The vines reduced to a blur as he passed, only slight movement to be seen. Phew! All good so far.

The trees were no friends of his either, at least not while on a broom. With their branches that were always closer than he estimated, he usually ended up crashing. Today would be no such day! He slowed his pace just barely. Thankful he did, he swung around a branch that would have hit him head on if he didn’t.

He breathed a sigh of relief. The difficult part was over! Now it was just to breeze over the finish line, and… No such luck. Crossing the water, a tentacle reached out and grabbed him. It was so unexpected he didn’t even managed to fight it as he went down. Breaking the water’s surface, he gasped for breath. The water wasn’t shockingly cold, but it was more the surprise of suddenly finding himself in it. A bit dazed he looked over the others that had been grabbed. Seemed the squid was on a roll for today.

Each and every Gryffindor went down. He was certainly petty enough to hope the Ravenclaw was grabbed too. He liked winning, even though he would have preferred it happening without a swan dive. As Tina hit the water, he couldn’t help but laugh. Not at her exactly, but more the situation they all found themselves in. He continued giggling a bit as Skylar spoke. «I’m not really that familiar with broom racing. Are we supposed to swim ashore and admit defeat, or are we supposed to hop back on and try to finish?» The question was valid, at least in his own opinion. He thought it over for a moment before he hurriedly added «Oh, and I’m Max!» He was pretty sure he had spoken with all of them at some point, but faces and names blurred enough that it felt rude to assume.

Speed: Top Speed is 5.
Effect: When Racing with this broom, you can declare an intended move called Slow Down that reduces your maximum speed by 1 to give you a re-roll (at advantage) against an obstacle you hit. Yes, this is an action declared at the start of your round prior to any rolls where IF you are hit by a something or run into something that you get a second roll. If that roll is successful or not, your speed is still reduced by 1.

As the race got set to begin, Poppy found herself joined by familiar faces. Even better, some of them were friends. She waved at both Max and Skylar when they joined her by the starting line but hadn't gotten a chance to say anything before Frederick joined the trio. Outside of the familiarity that came with sharing classes and a common room, she didn't know him as well as the first two, but the little girl smiled brightly all the same when he wished them luck.

"T—Thank you!" She hesitated a moment, uncertain of the sort of etiquette meant for such situations. It was a race, sure, and that meant there needed to be a winner and a bunch of losers, but...but it seemed a little slimy not to return the wish. "You... you, too!"

By the time Tina joined them, it was already time to be off. The nerves followed Poppy through the first obstacle, departing only when she managed to manoeuvre it with surprising—and she did mean surprising—ease. While only having been a spectator up to this point in her non-existent broom-racing career, the first year had seen enough races to know how differently it could've ended.

By the time she hit the trees, she'd found a bit more courage and some footing. She could almost feel the nerves melting off her, falling to the ground while she continued speeding down the track and through the trees.

Perhaps it was that rising confidence that got to her in the end.

Poppy had been having a grand time with the wind whipping through her hair and the track near completion. It was fun flying with her friends, absent flying metal murder balls coming out of nowhere. All that came to an end with the tentacles that held onto her.

Not just her. Soon Skylar, then Max – even Frederick and Tina – were all trapped. Poppy went down with a squeak, bracing as she hit the water with a splash. She held tightly to her broom, sure there was a way out, even if they couldn't currently see it. How did one handle a squid of this size, anyway?

Max didn't know. Like her, he professed to not being much of an expert. Skylar wasn't any more keen to offer up a way out, deciding instead that she and Max would introduce themselves to their classmates. For a while, she'd caught herself doing the same before realising with some chagrin just how often she ran into others, especially those within her year.

«I’m not really that familiar with broom racing. Are we supposed to swim ashore and admit defeat, or are we supposed to hop back on and try to finish?»

"Um..." Poppy looked around at the small group who'd all been bested by the cephalopod. In the races she'd seen...she supposed...it depended on the team. In one race, she'd watched the Gryffindors give up after being stuck at the first obstacle. In others, she'd seen people try.

Was there a right answer? Would anyone even listen?

The small girl's cheeks flushed with colour as she forced herself to get out the words she truly believed. "I...maybe...I think we should – I think it'd be better – more...more, uh...noble," most of them, now dripping wet, were Gryffindors after all. "If we figure a way back onto our brooms so we can cross the finish line." That seemed the most important to her.

"I just...I don't know how–bu–but we can do it!"

One by one, while waiting for his turn, Frederick watched his classmates clear the first obstacles. Everyone seemed to do brilliantly avoiding the Devil’s Snare and weaving through the trees, only to end up getting caught by the baby giant squid. With an apprehensive grimace, Buckley soon discovered that his own fate would be no different once his turn arrived.

The boy showed a fair amount of skill in the first two challenges, avoiding them with ease. Perhaps that made him a little too confident as he sped toward the final obstacle, or perhaps the giant squid was simply in a bad mood. Either way, as Frederick soared over the lake where the creature lurked, he caught sight of the finish line ahead, only to fail to reach it. Before he could react, a large, slimy tentacle wrapped around his ankle, yanking him clean off his broom and straight into the water.

With a dramatic splash, Frederick resurfaced, shaking his head to fling excess water from his drenched hair just in time to see yet another person get dragged down by the giant squid, this time, a Ravenclaw girl. “Looks like we’ve got a winner, and its name is giant squid,” he laughed, glancing around at the small group gathered there while brushing wet hair back from his forehead. “I’m Frederick, by the way,” he added after hearing Skylar and Max introduce themselves. “I think we should try again. The worst that can happen is we end up back here together.” Buckley laughed once more, secretly relieved that he hadn’t been the only one to fall into the lake. Somehow, with good company around, even being completely soaked didn’t seem all that bad.

✥─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────✥

Erast blinked down at his hands. On them rested a broom. The silver handle was sleek and smooth, not a blemish or splinter in sight. Grip tape neatly hugged the curved end of its handle, wrapped with an athlete’s expert precision. He never held a broom before.

“Father?” His tongue was lead in his mouth, words a lump in his airway.

“The British are crazy for sports.” A clink of porcelain on mahogany.

“Hogwarts is no different, even now, I reckon. With a school like that... To send you to school with anything but the best would be a disgrace.”

Curiosity burst out. “Did you ever play when you were a student, Father?” It slipped off his tongue clumsily. The pin-drop silence that followed was deafening. Cold sweat rolled down his back. He should've kept his mouth shut, what had he been thinking–

“Broom-racing.” The curt response made him snap his jaw shut. Erast chanced a gaze at his father. For a split second, carob eyes lost their biting, incisive chill, clouded with something inexplicable. Had such a pinched expression not been seen, he would've thought those eyes as ones dipped in nostalgia.

The boy tensed as his father rose from his leather wingback chair, his limbs frozen. The shadow of the man stopped before him.

“Information always leaks where adrenaline flows. Sports was but a mere stepping stone.”

Erast snapped his gaze up to meet his father's eyes, disquietude sending ice down his spine. Harsh shadows cast over his father's chiselled face.

“A Yan must not indulge in meaningless hobbies. These are opportunities, not leisure. You will not disappoint me, Qi-En.”

Blood roared in his ears, his heart pounding in the palms that held this shred of trust

“Yes, father.”

─────────────────────────────────────────────────────

It was a Silver Arrow, Erast later found out. From his loaned copy of a senior student’s broom catalogue, his broom is one of the most expensive, handcrafted beginner brooms in the market. As his father had said, “the best”– or, at the very least, the best that he could get at his current level. His father had entrusted him with such a valuable thing. Hugging the silver handle to his chest, Erast could not help but smile at the idea.

Broom-racing at Hogwarts, as the brunet would soon find out, was a total whirlwind of excitement for a school sport. Everything was so unpredictable with all the obstacles and players’ magic that even spectating from the stands could make someone grip and lean on the edge of their seat in sheer anticipation. It was so unlike Quidditch, where the track was twisted into a rounded pitch, and wands were discarded in favour of brute strength. Quidditch was frankly a masochist’s sport. For wizards and witches to prefer to forfeit magic and submit themselves to the bedlam in that claustrophobic pitch… Were they crazy? Unfortunately, many of his friends seemed to really love it, so Erast had politely kept his disdain to himself, but there was no doubt that his eyes entirely swept past the Quidditch information when the Field Day event finally came by.

Glancing over the area where a modified broom-racing track had been set up, Erast had to hold back a disappointed pout. Upon arrival, the students had been informed to put away their wands so as to focus on the experience of overcoming broom-racing obstacles. Not only had he been stripped of one of what seemed to be the most thrilling parts of the sport, but the track was also cut short and had its difficulty level reduced to make it beginner-friendly. It was like eating bell peppers to prepare for eating chilli peppers. Now, it was not as if the boy thought he was particularly talented or skilled at the sport. After all, outside of the past year’s flying lessons, Erast had zero experience in flying, much less broom-based sports. Even his placement on the waitlist for Hufflepuff’s racing team was despairing to look at. He was actually quite pitiful in this regard. That being said, insofar as a trial went, was it really that bad to let kids get the full package and get a little bruised?

Standing in line waiting for his turn, Erast had to smack himself lightly to chase away those silly thoughts. Having fun was secondary to safeguarding the Yan Clan’s reputation. His father had said so. If he really did get swallowed by a monster on the track, the family name will be thrown away into the mud! He couldn't let himself get carried away.

Hearing the excited chatter of students who had both succeeded and failed at the broom-racing track from where he stood, he turned to stare at a passing group of students soaked from falling into the lake. Erast perked up at the sight of Frederick laughing with some other students as they joked around about their recent attempt at completing track. The joyful and positive atmosphere seeped into him like gentle sunshine, brightening his mood and spinning excitement again. If others were having fun, it must be fun, right?

Realising it would be his turn soon, Erast rolled up his sleeves and practised his grip on his broom. His first attempt at broom-racing. He wondered if he would be any good at it...

ROUND III MODERATION

The event was soon coming to an end, with many racers realizing only much too late that even a baby squid can hold its own. Perhaps the squid had its own future career in the making of replacing its larger counterpart.

As many racers seem to have decided to either leave off to other activities or figure out how to escape the track itself, one first-year Hufflepuff boy by the name of @Erast Yan had the courage to try his own skills at the track. All with the famous shine and brilliance that a Silver Arrow broom held for anyone who dared to look upon it. A prefect already in his first year. Could he hope to prove himself even more in the eyes of more than just his own peers?

The young Hufflepuff races by the Devil's Snare, the vines not even bothering to take a grip on him. It was as if he were already an experienced racer, effortlessly dodging such a fearsome obstacle. Perhaps broom racing is in his future?

He pushes through even the trees, not getting a single scratch on his body as he slips past the many branches. But the squid locks onto him. The squid prepares, its tentacle reaching out...and down into the water Erast Yan goes with the equally unlucky Gryffindor students. If a squid could crackle, it would be cheering on its own bubbly success.

Skylar had finally wiggled out of the squid's grasp when another student, a Hufflepuff it seems, approaches them at a fast pace. But unfortunately, the squid also manages to grab the poor student from the air. Skylar winces as she watches the student go down, joining her and the rest of her unlucky Gryffindors.

"Well, um, welcome to the club?" One student down, okay; two students, well that is still pretty funny; three and four, that is pushing it; now five? Either someone forgot to feed the squid today, or it was just personally insulted by their presence.

However, despite all of their dreadful luck, Skylar stills finds herself wishing to try again as Poppy had suggested. After all, Frederick was right. The worse that could happen is if they end up back here again.

Wading through the water, Skylar's eyes search for her broom. She manages to find it at the river back, washed up by the river. She does not know whether the broom would be good for flying after its wet dunk, but one could only dream.

Along side her broom are several others, probably from the others. Grabbing her broom, Skylar grins as she gestures for the others to join her. "Come on! I think some of your brooms are here. We can just grab them and start from here to the finish line."
