Amara had a long day and did not feel like going back to the common room after dinner so she decided to go to the library. Amara has been working on her epic for months and while she has written the last chapter, she still needed to finalize many parts in the middle. She had her ever-present thermos of tea and a plate of shortbread cookies out to munch on and was curled up in her favorite chair. Amara had just started to write when she heard the door to the library open. Amara sighed, the library was empty other than her and she wished that she could keep it that way. Amara put her back down and continued to write, ignoring the fact that the person was walking right towards her.

Amara refused to look up until the person was standing right beside her and she felt their warm breath on her neck as he read over her shoulder. Amara went stiff feeling him so close to her and scooted herself away, "Personal space exists" she mutters under her breath before looking up at him and speaking at a normal volume, "Excuse me?' Amara sets her pen down and stares at the person.

Sorry if this was too godmoding I was just struggling to come up with a good begining

Gem often had a good sense of personal space, but in this case, he'd been squeezing through everyone's business to get where he needed to go. Hogwarts hallways were always so crowded, and he had places to be, so sometimes, invading someone's bubble was a necessity. Getting to the library was no exception, a tumble and a fall, and he was in with his notebook tucked tightly under his arm, a quill carefully set between the pages, kept in with the spine of the book.

He hadn't noticed the Slytherin until after she'd snapped at him, his eyes widening a bit. He was always so used to being cordial, but he remembered it was Hogwarts - that was one thing he missed, being yelled at by someone for no other reason than standing too close on accident. He hadn't noticed she'd been writing something until after he looked her up and down with judgement, and there his eyes brightened up.

"Huh? Oh, right," He rolled his eyes a bit, taking a long step away from her (it wasn't so hard, he had quite long legs despite being short). "Ya wouldn't mind if I sat here, would'ya?" He didn't wait for an answer, pulling out the seat across her, opening up his journal so he could start his own writing. He knew what it was like to have people try and speak to you while you were working, so he didn't say anything, though he was a bit curious as to what she had going on, and it showed, since he'd occasionally glanced up to see if she had advanced at all.

What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.

Amara rolled her eyes, she usually did not care in the least bit if someone sat with her as she wrote, but something about this boy made her feel uncomfortable, almost dirty. But, he did not want to get upset with him as she saw he was doing his own writing so Amara tried to calm herself by taking a deep breath. She smelled the cigarettes on him and wrinkled her nose, "Must you partake in such a nasty habit?" she asked looking up at him. The smell reminded her of her mother- and not in a good way. She grabbed a tin of mints from her bag and tossed them over to him while glancing at his writing. Amara cracked her knuckles, picked her quill back up, and continued to write. Could this boy be any more annoying, he kept looking at her journal and her no matter how much she shifted or tried to cover it up; he was the rudest person she had met at this school that donned blue. He acted more like some of the arrogant lions or snakes than an eagle, I mean if he was so wise why would he do something as dimwitted as smoke? It just made no sense.

Gem was often careful about the way he smelled, especially when it came down to cigarette smoke, but he guessed this girl had some kind of super-nose. He'd been wearing clean clothes and such, but he supposed the peppermint he'd popped into his mouth earlier hadn't done very much - he supposed he'd have to up his game, if that were even possible.

"Were you ever taught manners?" He asked, his voice light and casual as if he were asking for the time. "Thanks." He slid the mints back over once he took one, popping it in his mouth and playing with it with his tongue. He knew Slytherins were often snobby, but he guessed they'd upped their game a bit since then. He continued to write in his journal, keeping himself quiet as possible as not to disturb the princess sitting across him - he didn't know if he'd be able to stand hearing her voice again, though he very well could have initiated a fight with those words of his-- that being said, he wasn't apologizing.

"If you don't mind me askin'," He cut the silence, "what're you writin' about? Homework, or for yer own personal self?" It was often easy to relief tension with conversation like this, and he hoped that was what he was doing here; she might hex him or something, he never knew.

Amara looks back up at him, she is not one for this type of banter but with this boy, it was almost... fun, "Contrary to you clearly" she retorts, a small smirk creeping onto her face. Her tone was light like his and it seemed as if this was little more than a game of cards, one that requires wit more than skill. She has not seen this boy around yet, but then again she was gone for most of the year. Amara watches how he eats the mint, he does not chew it right away but he lets it melt as he fidgets with it with his tongue (like she does). Amara starts to nibble on one of the cookies she brought in between sips of tea. She tried to focus but could not with the boy there which was odd since usually, it did not matter to her if others wrote alongside her.
"If you don't mind me askin'," He cut the silence, "what're you writin' about? Homework, or for yer own personal self?"
Amara flinches at his terse language, something she did not expect from a fellow writer, so she infers he is doing homework, "For myself, and I presume you are doing classwork? And I apologize if I missed it but your name? I am Amara Dragamior by the way"

Gem almost smiled, but he held back, his chin tilting upwards a bit. He wondered if she made assumptions about people often, something he was guilty of as well - he had no place to complain, but it made him think.

"No," He answered, "for meself. I like ta write." He held his hand out to shake, an open, kind smile shifting his expression from the more sour one he had prior. "Gem Stuart, pleasure."

"If ya don't mind me askin', what're you writing about?"
He tilted his head, his eyes trailing down from her face to the parchment in front of her, though he avoided reading any of the text, lest she shout at him in a library for something as personal as her own art. He hated it when people breathed down his neck while he scrawled down every thought, or short story he had been working on on that particular day.

Now that he wasn't so irritated by her, he took the time to take in her features; she was a pretty girl, that he could acknowledge, brown hair and thick eyebrows, piercing blue eyes that could cut through anyone's weakened stare. He averted his gaze back down to his own journal, shifting so that his elbow was on the table, his chin in his palm - he simply waited for an answer, he had no time to be all energetic, he was quite tired.

Amara is taken aback, just a little bit. She understands how rude and unbecoming it is to make assumptions and, now that she looks at Gem, Amara can tell that he seems to have the soul of a fellow wordsmith. Maybe it is his soulful brown eyes or his messy dark hair but something about him screams angsty writer.

He sticks his hand out, drawing Amara away from her thoughts, and introduces himself as Gem Stuart. Amara puts down her quill, glances at her small, elegant cursive and takes the boy's- Gem's- hand to shake, "Amara Dragamior and the pleasure is all mine" as Amara says the last part, she rolls her eyes while making sure to keep a playful smile on her face.

Amara scratches her neck before going to let her bun down. She shakes her hair out as she listens to Gem's next question. Amara glances down and for a very surprising moment, she considers showing him the notebook. "I am re-telling a story I- I mean my birth mother used to tell me when I was little in prose. What about you, I mean assuming you are okay telling me?" Amara mentally scolds herself at her slip-up, it is just something about this boy- he distracts her for some odd reason.

Gem raised his eyebrows a bit, drawn in by the idea of retelling a story.

"It's just me notebook, I write whatever in 'ere, short stories, stuff about me life, the likes," He shrugged indifferently, setting his quill down beside his book so that black ink wouldn't drip down his wrist. "I quite like the idea of retelling a story, maybe when you're finished you could show me?"

Perhaps it was invasive, maybe she didn't want to show anyone that because it was something she held dear between her and her mother, but he never did think before he spoke - if she really didn't want to, she wouldn't, and he thought maybe it would be appropriate to remind her that. "It's fine if ya don't want to, though. I know writing's quite personal." There, now he couldn't be blamed for anything.

It was in his nature to be defensive over his writing, if he were in her position he'd get offended that someone dared to ask to see what he had to offer on a page. Writing was just about his only solace in the magical world, he'd gotten so used to being where the muggles were, remaining fascinated with televisions and VHS', or a type of polaroid camera that they didn't have here. He never got much into the... other technology, like the portable phones, so his best bet had to have been writing something down and sending it out with an owl. He liked it that way, and he wouldn't change it for the world.

Amara smiles and sets down her own quill, "It's less of one cohesive story I guess but more multiple narratives weaved together based on the moral/theme of finding yourself."

Amara nods as he explains what he writes, just different types of stuff. She looks at him kindly as he makes sure to clarify that she doesn't have to share her writing. For some reason though, she decides to flip around to get to one of her favorite pages and slides the notebook over to Gem. Amara bites her lip, "That's one of my favorite parts," Amara twirls her hair in between her fingers as she waits for him to read it.

Amara surprised herself by showing it to him. She rarely shows anyone her notebook, especially a (somewhat) rude boy she had just met. Amara can count on one hand the number of people who have seen her work and Gem is the first person at Hogwarts to read it. Amara looks back at Gem, unable to stay silent any longer, "How is it?" she asks shyly. Amara hates when people read her work in front of her. It is nice to be able to see their facial reactions but it sucks have to see them and wait in the awkward silence.

Gem was surprised about the compliance, to say the least. He raised his eyebrows, thanking her under his breathe, carefully taking the book between his fingers. He read it quickly, for the most part though he appreciated the attention to detail, and he said as much while he handed it back.

"I like it a lot, laa," He said, "Could probably publish it, if ya wanted to. Maybeh it's just for you, but... ya know, if you wanted to, you could." He shrugged, reaching up to curl some of his hair between his fingers, tugging on one of the locks.

"I wish I could make commitments to me writings like that, I joost... have a bunch of unfinished projects. I fink maybe I'd like ta finish one one day, I write about muggles a lot, joost cos I think they're quite interesting." He wondered if she thought the same - probably didn't, truthfully, since everyone's opinion on muggles had become so grey since, well... forever. It was few times he'd met extremists, but when those times had come around, he always found himself very passionately defending them - maybe that made him an extremist.

But even then, he smiled and nodded his head at her, mostly a respect thing. "It's good ta find a fellow writer around 'ere, a more competent one, but... one, nonetheless."
