Once more she looked up, directly at him and just studied him for a moment. "Oh, Ross Stephens," she said and then gave a very long sigh. "It's clearly certain that before we can do ANYTHING, we must find you a nice pair of shoes. Are you sure we can't get a Professor to allow us to go into Hogsmeade to do a little shopping? I mean if there was ever a need for such a visit, now is the time."

She thought of their Head of House. Maybe he would oblige. Maybe they didn't need permission at all and could just go. She really wanted to see what that town had to offer and didn't like how they had to wait so long before being able to go.

"I mean, ordering a pair by owl or getting a pair from another just isn't very practical, no? No. Plus if we went into Hogsmeade we could see if we could find that Sexy Detective look," and she glanced back down to her paper, adding a question mark by the fashion notes she had just crossed out. Maybe it was too soon to say no to all that just yet.

Ross shook his head on the spot. Though he had only heard tales of Hogsmeade, there was certainly no reason to go. He had perfectly good parents, and was not an orphan just yet. He would either find himself a good shoe or ask for one from his parents, there was simply no in between. Besides, he was not going to just bend the rules just go on a silly trip. He was going to wait his time like everyone else. It was part of his conduct, even if it was rather confusing. Rule breaking was against his code, but he was never sure if it was because it made him nervous or if he just felt they were in place for a reason. Considering the rumors, he had a feeling Hogsmeade had it all in place for a specific reason.

"I'll stand a day without as much as a shoe. These are quite comfortable, mind you" The Hufflepuff remarked in a joking manner. "I'll just OWL mum. I might even be able to get a new pair in time for my birthday!" he added.

While he had not OWLed his parents since that day in winter and he had not received one back, there was some sort of joy that would fill him when he thought of it. It was just so exciting, and he was getting somewhat homesick. He had not even visited during winter break, so it almost felt like he forgot how home felt. The Hufflepuff common room felt like home is all he could really explain. It had the same sensation that would make him just want to relax and fall into a deep slumber as the fire crackled in the corner. It felt safe in slight contrast to the rest of the school, but as of recent that proved to be incorrect. The Hufflepuff common room was not immune to everything, and if he had been permanently damaged then there was no doubt there would be a great tension and loss among the Hufflepuffs.

"I don't got much anyways." he explained.

He had a relatively mid-class life, but now that he was in the wizarding world on his own he had really only had pocket change on him. Sure it was all fine and dandy, but it could get frustrating at times when he wanted something. It was especially frustrating when that specific something was a rat he wanted to name worm.

Taking another bite out of his meal, he noticed that he was nearly done with it all.

"I may as well write 'em somethin' right now..." he thought out loud as he found himself pulling out a piece of paper.

The boy found himself reaching into that bag he brought along with him everywhere and took out a quill. He let the girl continue speaking as he began his journey through writing. He never really wrote much besides notes, so the text was sloppy the first time around; however, he managed to go over it a couple times just to make it look more neat. He hoped his mother would notice the effort he put into it. Last time she wrote him a letter, she also gave him a gift. Ross did not have much to give without breaking the whole 'muggles can't know magic' rule, so he hoped the fact he even put good handwriting effort into it was enough.
Dear Mom

I hope things at home are going really cool, as well as with you. I 'm actually writing this message for a little tiny favor! Please remember you're my favorite mom in the world while I'm writing this, but I accidentally lost my shoe. I have a pair I left in my room! I was wondering if you could maybe use that owl I'm using from the owlery and send it to me so I have my shoes! Thank you!

Take care!
Ross Stephens

When he finished the letter, it was about then she stopped talking. "Hopefully you'll have your shoes come morning," she said and wondered about his homelife, but she didn't ask. He had a mother and one that would hopefully care about getting his shoes, but never would she ask. That would be forward. Very forward.

Breakfast was starting to come to an end and she was worried about that. Her invitation extended to breakfast but what beyond then? Would he really ever talk to her beyond this? The Lake was self explanatory, they were stuck together, and then she was required to stay for observation in the Hospital Wing for a bit, and then this was a way of saying thank you for saving his life. But once breakfast really did close and everyone headed off to their first class, would she lose what she thought to be her first friend? Ross Stephens fascinated the girl even though she felt she knew so little about him.

"I wish History of Magic wasn't first thing,"
she said as her eyes followed the others. To her surprise her twin sister Bella gave her a slight wave as she passed and she waved back. "I mean really, how do they expect us to stay awake and focus at all? Most of us are not morning people."

Ross shrugged as he rolled up the parchment. Truth was, he was a morning person. Then again, he was also a night person. It really just depended how much sleep he got, but the mornings were always so nice. The view of the sky was just simply wondrous at Hogwarts, but it could never beat the one from home. As the light glow would fill up his room, he would find himself gently waking up. It was like an alarm clock, but instead of filling him with dread it reminded him that it was a new day.

"I dunno, at least it's not potions..." the boy mumbled.

Having potions in the morning would be dreadful. Actually, have potions any time of day was dreadful. The Hufflepuff despised the class with a burning passion and would never fail to bring it up in a conversation. He considered it a key part of himself that he refused to remove. Sure it was easier now than before, but the improvement really did not speak through his grades. He only understood it enough to get A's. E's and O's were a rarity, and were certainly not his goblet of pumpkin juice. It was more like grape flavored medicine that he would be forced to down every day.

She gasped dramatically like he had just said something of pure evil and looked to him with wide eyes. "Ross Stephens, how DARE you speak of Potions as such?" She shook her head ,"No, I would have Potions three times a day if able. How can you not... Why do you not..." she couldn't even form sentences. She picked up a piece of bread and threw it at him.

"What is it you don't like? Maybe I can help you with it! We could even go to the library and look up some of the books on Potions and see if there isn't something we want to give a go sometime."

It sounded interesting enough to her but then again she was always looking for a way to get in trouble. Well, not really. She was always looking for a way to have an adventure and it just sometimes led to trouble. "Or I could help you in it? We could be Potions study-buddies?" That sounded rather Ravenclaw and she was sure that Ross Stephens probably had better things to do than attempt his way through Potions with her.

Alina had to remember this was just a breakfast to thank her for helping him. Once classes began, he probably would be glad to get rid of her.

Ross flinched when she threw the bread at him and curled to the side, but found himself laughing anyways. He felt bad about the waste of food, but he was not going to bring it up. It would be rude. Potions was not his cup of tea, and anyone who knew him slightly knew that. He refused to acknowledge the first part of her sentences, as he really could not have cared less. He treated it more like a joke. Potions was the worst.

Stir THIS Stir THAT do THIS.

It was just instructions: The game and he was having absolutely none of it. Who would want to follow instructions their entire lives? It was boring. At least you could make up potions, but there was a fifty fifty chance something would blow up all the way across the world or something along those lines. People who made potions were lucky to live past twenty in his book. It seemed like a suicide letter, because one could never know what could go wrong.

As she offered to help, Ross vigorously shook his head.

"ABSOLUTELY NOT!" He interrupted almost before she could finish her sentence, but caught himself a moment too late. I mean... no thanks." he corrected in a mumbly voice.

Any person who tried to help him with potions would likely not suffer a good fate, though he tried his best to make it easy on them. First up was Flash, who got him blackmailed within less than ten minutes of talking to him. That was really all there was in all honesty, but potions brought more good than bad. Besides, if she had been in his potions class he probably would have seen her anyways.

"Charms is much more superior to 'potions'." he remarked, and he felt well it was true.

Truth was, Charms was genuinely fun unlike Potions. If something was going to explode, it was going to be near you and you could watch the explosion. There were countless spells one could learn, and one mistake did not just ruin the entire thing and manage to poison the entire population of Canada somehow. Potions was scary, but Charms was trial and error.

"Charms can even make it snow, y'know? I know how to make it snow!

Charms did seem to be something Ross Stephens was passionate about and she smiled, glad to see that. She liked when people got fired up with a passion. "I've heard you can do things in Charms that even the older students can. Is that true?"

She was doing well if she could pull of an 'A' Acceptable in that course and sometimes it felt like she wasn't learning many practical things. Alina glanced up, wanting to ask him to make it snow right then but she didn't figure he would actually try. Plus, while she had no problem getting into trouble, she knew not everyone else felt the same.

"Do you think the school nurse has volunteers?"
she asked him since he at least had some experience now in the Hospital Wing. "I was just thinking that it might be, you know, something to pass the time now and again." Even if she did what she did when she was in there visiting him, restocking bed linens.

"I might go ask later today. What's on your list....besides carrying out a rather deep hatred for Potions class?" Although it was kind of a shame since Potions was a required class. There was no getting away from it if you didn't like it. It was like her and Transfigurations. She even shuddered a little at the thought.

Ross perked up. That was certainly true, well, he hoped it would be true soon. He had a basic grasp on the upper-class spells but he had not really confirmed that he had them down yet. It would be too risky to show her currently, but yet it was true he was rather knowledgeable in charms. It was really all thanks to that book he had from Knox Stephens. It had been a life saver many times, and Ross had become slightly reliant on it. Sure he would occasionally tweak the notes if the handwriting was faded and it was difficult to read, but it was Knox who technically did all the work. He could not help but wonder if Knox was out there today.

"Sorta! I dunno if I should be showin' you.. I 'aven't really 'officially' got 'em down yet but I can tell ya I've performed most of the second year spells at least once in the charms classroom. They're sorta easy. Shouldn't 'ave to worry about next year much at all." He explained, sounding slightly sheepish as he did.

It seemed as if he was a bit flustered. Perhaps it was the fact he considered himself not completely capable to do the second year spells yet. Sure he officially learned them, but he wished to wait just a little. Besides, most of them were spells that were heavily reliant on movement. If he was unable to come up with a counter charm on the spot, then the object of target, or perhaps even living being, would be stuck for an uncomfortable moment while he tried to recall something from the top of his head. Still, he found himself confident within his regular spell abilities. It just took time.

As she inquired about the school nurse volunteers, he simply shrugged.

"I dunno, but I'd hope not. At least not til someone were to hit third year, I wouldn't really want anyone younger than me handlin' my severe injuries. Hope I never get burned again, o' course. You wanna be a nurse or somethin'?" He inquired, really unsure where she was going with this.

He had been in the Hospital Wing a total of two times, and he had a feeling that he was not even at the end of it. One was due to a prank gone wrong on him, and the other one was due to his foot catching on fire and nearly catching hypothermia in the mean time.

"Might actually go to the Rehearsal Room or somethin', but can't say for certain. It's sorta been awhile since I've been. It was my first time accidentally setting someone on fire... or perhaps second? I dunno."

The Hufflepuff shrugged. All he knew was it was Monday, and Monday was not exactly his favorite in contrast to most days.

She just stared blankly at the boy. It was his first...or second...time setting things on fire. How did you not know? Alina smiled though. If he really wasn't sure, this probably most definitely wouldn't be his last.

"Rehearsal room, huh? Going to go play the piano or join the school's dance club?" She knew SO many girls in that thing but it wasn't really her thing and somehow she didn't think that she could see Ross Stephens doing anything but practicing his spells there, but who knew. Maybe the boy had a talent that he just didn't want to share with his roommates up in his dormitory.

"Or I could see where a fellow would think that dance club was a great place to find a girl," and she tilted her head playfully like maybe she was on to something. Still, she could be totally off track. At their age there were three groups of students, those that were oblivious to how they felt about relationships, those that were starting to discover such feelings, and those that were ready to jump in and discover what all that was about. She didn't know what category to place him in.

She grabbed one last sip of her juice that morning and then began making sure her bag was still packed up.

Ross shook his head at the remark. Dance club was not his cup of tea, but that was mainly because he hardly knew how to dance. If he tried, he would look like a monkey on roller skates. Though he aspired to join improv club someday, but only due to the fact there may be more situations similar to those of Mildred, he often went there to admire how good other people were at activities. Sure he would go there to occasionally practice trombone, but he never got to really learn how to play. If he did, he would probably go there more often. He had no clue where to get the books on it either, so he simply made stuff up as he tried to make it sound good. It was a goal of his over the summer.

"Just to watch other people and such, nothin' more." The Hufflepuff lied.

He hardly knew how to do the skill, so it really was not much of a lie. The charms room was a much safer place to practice spells, and it was not like he wanted anyone knowing about trombone. It was not that it was bad or anything, he just knew well that he had no clue how to play it and if anyone found out then he felt they would ask to hear him. He would likely say yes, and when they heard it they would probably ask him to shut up.

As the girl made her joking remark, it seemed to partially go over his head. Sure he got the gist of it, but it was never his goal to be looking for love or anything. What fun would that be anyways? It sounded gross if anything. It was just people talking, and then they would talk some more and some more. For now, absolutely not.

"Yeah... boys are mainly outside and stuff aren't they?" He inquired, but he already knew the answer.

The Hufflepuff glanced at his empty goblet. He really had no clue what to think of the encounters he had with this girl. Sure she was kind, but he never seemed to have a normal encounter with her until now. Perhaps it felt odd just because she had saved his life. She was a hero, sure, but what else was she? Ross felt he could figure it out, but perhaps he was simply burnt out... well, quite literally, from the past couple days.
