So THIS is where owls live FINSIHED May Moonstar

Even halfway up the winding stone staircase, Blake's cheeks, neck and ears were still the light crimson shade usually linked to embarrassment but now part of the rosie tinge was deepened by the flush of walking up what felt like a never-ending staircase. All of this just to send one letter to Laylen about the floating candles in the main hall.
"Never again," Blake huffed as he finally heard the gentle fluttering of many wings growing louder infront of him, "am I making this climb for one. stupid. letter,". The stone steps soon gave way to a large circular turret with finely cut windows lining the walls and a great flagstone floor covered in straw. Up this high, the cold Scottish breeze sailed in through the windows and whipped a few stray tendrils of his hair into his dampened forehead and he exhaled softly. As one already acclimatized to the brisk breezes of a Scottish fall, the feeling of the cold fingers poking and proding at his cloak was a welcomed feeling that reminded him of home.

The stars twinkled and winked at him from behind the clouds that raced across the sky as he moved toward the window closest to him, a great one facing the Quidditch Pitch, and peered out. The candle light of thousands of candles greeted him from their respective homes in different areas of the castle and a feeling of being so very tiny suddenly gripped him as he moved away from the window.
"This sure is different then Melrose.." his train of thought wandered away from him as he scanned the many roosting owls for signs of the family owl his Mum and Da had sent.
The letters had arrived at breakfast the previous day, dropping a decently thick letter onto Blake's lap before departing to drop a smaller and more sensible envelope into the lap of his older sister. Two letters had been crammed into the ivory envelop, which was sealed shut with the Bayne seal in the rich, cornflower blue wax his father kept in his study. He had quickly shoved the letters into his pocket to read after classes had finished.

Sure enough the first letter had been a series of many questions from his Mum and Da, all written in his mother's curling, elegant script. They congratulated him on being sorted in RavenClaw, asked how he settling in and all the usual parent things. The only interesting note was that they had purchased Laylen a small puppy to keep him company since both Blake and Maggie were no longer home and their younger brother had felt impossibly alone. The second letter had been a far less official one from Laylen himself, written in a mix of pen and crayon. The letter had rambled about whatever had come to his mind, like he was having a conversation with Blake and expected to hear immediate answers. Some of the questions had been absurd such as how windows he had in his dorm, could he smell the kitchens from his dorm and did the stones feel cold even with shoes on? These questions had brought a smile to his face and he had spent the better part of the week finding these answers in the evenings. Now only one question remained unanswered in Blake's response letter and that was; where did the Hogwart's owls live? Blake had come armed with a quill, ink pot and his letter, still unsealed, to write a brief description before sealing it and sending it off for the curious lad.

Finally the great black shape that was his family owl, Fraser, loomed up to his right and perched lightly on his shoulder. The owl emulated soft cooing and rumbling, throaty hoots affectionately into Blake's ear.
"Hello Hello bub. The other Owl's been treating ya alright?"Blake mused happily, bringing up his other hand to offer the great shape a scrap of roast beef he had stolen away at dinner for his feathery friend. Fraser accepted the treat gleefully, taking it in his beak and fluttering off among the rafters to sit and chew happily. Blake had been too absorbed in writing his final response, quill scratching noisily at the parchment as he made quick notes about his surroundings, to hear the gentle pad of feet sailing up the stairs.

As Blake was securing his now completed letter to the ankle of the great black beast standing on the expanse of the stone window ledge, when the girl appeared on the landing. She came up in a cloud of sweet smelling herbs that reminded him of his older HufflePuff sister. On the landing, now caught like a deer in head-lights, stood a girl who looked no older then him. her yellow-lined robe shone as it caught the twinkling light of the candles positioned on the walls hugging the entrance as another shape, this one more familiar appeared behind her.
"Blake? Why the bloody hell are you up here?" Margaret breathed moving around the girl to look her brother over. Blake hadn't seen Maggie since the sorting ceremony and had missed her, not that he was gonna tell her that to her face.
"What does it look like? Im sending a letter ta Mum, Da and Laylen. Just had ta finish writing about the Owls," he replied, turning his head back to his careful task, "and I would ask the same thing ya know, why are you up here?" he went on before she could finish. Maggie raised her delicate eyebrows and waved him off before turning to the girl.
Welcome to the Owlery May, if you ever want to send letters home you come up here and find your family owl after the letters gets dropped in your lap at breakfast," Maggie smiled, gesturing grandly to the legions of owls currently roosting around. the girl, May, cocked her head to view all the sleeping and fluttering forms. Blake made a small cheering hiss as the twine was secured firmly but loosely enough to be sent. Although Maggie made great attempts to conceal her annoyance, Blake noticed her shoulders tighten under the thick robe.
"Now we could go see the dungeons before curfew since you'll be having potions down there tomorrow morning,"Maggie went on, turning for the stairs. Maggie seemed determined to leave, clearly unimpressed with her brother's presence while she was being a professional guide.
Blake had been zoned out stroking the feathers of his family pet soothingly and was reluctant to send him away but was jerked from his trance like state by someone below on the twisting staircase calling Maggie's name. She turned quickly herself, robes rustling as she prepared to exit in her usual hectic manner before pausing.
"I should only be a second May, it's just a fellow first year probably all turned around and confused,"she grinned sweetly before descending the many steps with surprising grace.

Silence followed the gradual receding footsteps and Blake turned to the girl, feeling obligated to be take a note from his sister's hospitable nature and extend the olive branch. Blake smiled slightly.
"He's already had his dinner ya know, brought him some roastbeef myself," he croaked, his voice not nearly as confident and airy as he had intended and the familiar crimson blush crept up his neck but he pressed on dutifully, "would ya like ta stroke him? He doesn't bite I promise," he concluded in a breathless rush. Fraser, who had been perched on the boys arm ready to take flight, make a small cooing sound as Blake moved him away from the window to face the girl. Blake held his breath, hoping he hadn't startled her while waiting to see what she would do.

May was walking up to the owlery looking down the floor. She couldn't believe she was about o write to her parents. After all, since May was eight, her mother and father, for no reason had stopped talking to her. They only talked to her casually to say "dinner is ready" or "go to your room". Since the start of classes, she couldn't believe that, she was going to have to write to her parents any moment. She had considered this quite some time, and she had finally decided that she would go to the owlry and write to them.
When she entered the West tower of the castle, she saw a girl, said hi, and went to a barn owl and picked up a parchment. In the letter, this was written:
Dear mum and dad,
I'm sending you this owl, because this is the only way I can send a letter, for there is no postal, office here.
Being at Hogwarts is great, I'm very happy and I was sorted in Hufflepuff, the house of the kind and loyal. There is a ball coming up, and I wondered if you could send me my beautiful flower dress that Gram gave me last year when she was still alive. I would appreciate it.
I wanted to talk too, about what happened two years ago with me. I don't know why you stopped being kind to me. Well, you just stopped talking to me!
My classes are great, I've got an Outstanding in Charms homework.

Xoxox,

May.
May re read the letter two times before sending it. It was simple, but enough. She gave the barn owl a little treat, and let it go. She saw as a boy, seemed like a Ravenclaw, talked with the girl that was in the owlry with her. The boy seemed to be called Blake and the girl Maggie. May didn't want to seem rude, so she didn't look at them. She only smiled a bit when she saw them talking. They had a good relationship. May didn't have a good relationship with her big sister, recently graduated and now a Junior Healer at St. Mungos hospital.

Then, Maggie turned to May and said, "Welcome to the owlry May, if you ever want to send letters home, and find your family owl after the letters get dropped on your lap at breakfast.".
"Thank you Maggie, I'll take that In mind"
May replied with a smile.
Maggie seemed eager to leave the owlry, then, someone seemed to call her and she said a last thing to her, "I should only be a second May, it's just a fellow first year, probably all turned down and confused." and she turned down to the staircase and was gone.

There was a very uncomfortable silence, until the boy, which May remembered his name was Balke turned around and said to May, kindly, "He's already had his dinner ya know, brought him his roast beef myself," May giggled. It was a very pretty owl.
"Family owl or your own?"
May asked. She had to do a mental note, that next time she goes to Diagonal Alley she had to buy a owl. She smiled slightly. Her family were Muggles, but she thought she had magic in her blood.
"would you take a stroke? He doesn't bite, I promise."
May shakedown a little bit her sleeve, and stretched her arm and nodded. She was scared, but exited that the owl would come to her. She had never actually touched a owl. Well, touched yes, but hadn't got hold of one. It was a good experience for her.

Watching May carefully balance Fraser on he wrist, Blake took the opportunity to fish around his robe pocket in search of the second scrap of roast beet he had taken. He had intended to keep give Fraser the treat before sending him off, but now seemed like a fitting time.
The great black shape was curiously gazing at the witch he didn't recognize, his great head tilting to either side as he edged his way closer. Blake managed a laugh as at last, Fraser bent his head near her face and made a small cooing sound and nudged his face closer to the crook of her neck. Before May could wonder or ask, Blake spoke up.
"That means he likes ya! And no, he's actually my Da's owl but we all burrow him fur letters home. His name is Fraser,"Blake smiled, his dimples pooling in his cheeks lightly as he produced the scrap of meat.
"Since he's so taken with ya, would ya like ta feed him? He usually gets this bit of dinner when he's about ta leave but it can't hurt ta feed him a tad early,"He offered casually, the magnificent head rotating as the roast-beef was brought out of Blake's pocket. Stepping slightly forward, Blake brought his hand up to affectionately stroke the creature's neck lovingly while passing the small scrap of meat to May. The lip of her own letter, protruding slightly from her robe pocket, caught his eye.
"Writing to your parents to? I hardly knew what ta talk about in mine but I just hope my mum doesn't send a howler for not writing more,"Blake sighed, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth as he pictured Fraser swooping in with the infamous letter. Maggie would loose her mind from across the dining hall since, in all three of her years here, had never once received the dreaded howler. Granted, she had also sent home long and detailed letters Blake had deemed too boring to read after finishing his muggle homework.
"The only interesting thing I could write about was the Blossom Ball because I had ta ask fur my dress clothes. I just hope my Da's old dress robe fits,"He grinned sheepishly, "I'm not usually one for parties or dances but Maggie mentioned it to my mum and now I've got to go as well. Maggie promised it'll be tones of fun,"Blake sighed slightly, running a hand through his hair to dislodge the ends of his hair from sweat along the back of his neck. A cool breeze gushed in from the window and a shiver ran down the lad's back and rustled the black feathers of the owl on May's arm, now perched with his eyes half-lidded.
"When ya feed him, don't be surprised if he flies off with it. He likes ta eat his food in the rafters like it's his dining table,"The thought occurred to him, spotting the salty dinner meat in May's lowered hand, "He shouldn't hurt ya when he takes off either, he's surprisingly careful for such a large bird,"he smiled while stepping toward the window slightly to allow the feather wings to un-furrow once Fraser was presented with his treat.

Sorry it took so long to write back, I was working on school work :)

May carefully held the owl on her forearm, while Blake picked some roasted beef from his pocket. She smiled. He didn't seem shy, unlike her, he had confidence.
The owl began to make odd movements, and then, made a small cooing sound and nudged his face closer to her neck. May was about to ask her new friend, what was the owl doing, but before she could even open her mouth, he replied. "Tha' means he likes ya! And, no, it's actually my Da's owl, but we all borrow home fur letters home. His name is Fraser.". May giggled. Fraser continued to 'pet' May with his beak and head.
"Would ya like ta feed him? He usually gets this bit of dinner when he's about ta leave, but it can't hurt t feed him a bit early" As he said this, May took out her left hand from her sleeves and extended it to Blake. As he out the food in Mays hand, she giggled again. Why did she always had to giggle Ina conversation? She giggled (again), for she liked Blakes accent, country like maybe?
"Are you from the country?"
May immediately asked. Like her mother always said, better ask right now than stay with the doubt.

"Writing to your parents too? I hardly knew what to talk about in mine, but I just hope my mum doesn't send me a howler for not writing more,"
May didn't know what to say. Did she really had to tell that Ravenclaw boy about her letter. So, she didn't want to be rude, and she replied.
"Yeah, I'm writing to them too. They're muggle so they don't know much about magic. And...I didn't have much things to say to them too. They're notthe parents you would wish for tho...."
May took a deep breath and asked him if he knew something about the Blossom Ball.
"Have you heard of this, Blossom Ball? I do, and I wonder how I first knew about it. Hmm....Ah, yes! First, the posters all around the school. Second, all the Owls delivered to the girls in the great Hall, and Third, every single girl whispering in the Halls about what dress their gonna wear. You?[/quote]

May was surprised when the owl flyer off her arm. Then Blake told her why, and May nodded. She was liking the boy now. He seemed friendly.

A deep belly laugh escaped Blake as Fraser took off into the rafters, the treat all but snatched up. He had never had anyone ask about his accent, he hadn't even really believed he had one until hearing Maggie's friend talk when they visited over summer holidays. Once he regained his composure, he answered as seriously as he could, as he didn't want to seem rude.
"I guess ya could say that. I grew up in Melrose like my Da and his family but my mum is from England so I don't sound as true Scot as some of the lads I used to go ta classes with,"Blake shrugged. Having spent parts of his summer holidays in Sussex staying in his mum's childhood home, Blake's accent had been curbed slightly from a young age which had resulted in the odd mash-up of traditional Scottish Highland dialect and the more refined English tones he had heard growing up from his mum.
"My sister Maggie was the one who told me about the Ball. I hadn't believed at first if I'm honest, I thought she was pullin' my leg until the posters started poppin' up and then it was too late ta change my mum's mind when she decided I was goin thanks to Maggie,"Blake shook his head fondly, remembering the sly look his sister had given him when she handed over the letter she had gotten at breakfast earlier in the week and the argument that had ensued between the siblings.
"Why girls like to get all dressed up just to parade around in fancy clothes they can't get dirty is beyond me,"He reflected moodily, once again thinking about the nice clothes he would somehow be receiving. If his mum measure the garments and decided they wouldn't do, which was likely as he hadn't worn them since his Uncle's wedding years prior, she would send a small amount of pocket money. He only hoped the plush, blue velvet cloak his father had let him wear once or twice would be sent.
"The town I lived in was a Muggle town actually,"Blake went on, a spark of curiosity igniting as he began to speculate about what being raised by muggles was like, "I went to a muggle school for years 1 - 8 before comin' here. My brother's there now and my sister went there before she got inta Hogwarts. Whats it like, growin' up without magic? It isn't a bad thing! I'm just curious..."His words came out far less competent then he had hoped and he fumbled slightly to not offend May.
"Was it offensive to ask?"The thought struck him next and a pink tinge crept back into his cheeks.

May laughed with Blake when Farser. Flyed to pick his food.

May smiled at Blake, she knew what it felt to be from another place and be...different.
She had grown up in the United States. It had been terrible. Everybody laughing bout her accent.
"Well, that is life for you,"
"Where do you live now? I'm from Sussex. It's not my birthplace, but I like it more there than London. More plants." May nodded fondly.
"Have I even introduced myself?!" May asked, her eyes more open than normal.
"I know your name, but you maybe don't know mine. Or do you? I remember you from the sorting. " she said. She couldn't believe she hadn't introduced herself.
"Your Blake, I'm May. May Moonstar. And...I'm from Hufflepuff. Quiddich player too." May said. Yes, she very much liked being on a broom and soaring through the air.

"You like Quiddich? I play Quiddich all the time. It's my new hobby now" May laughed and balanced herself up her toes. That was a bad habit she had.

"I know that Maggie can be a chatterbox and nosy sometimes, but she good by heart." May said. She knew Maggie, and she was a good true friend.

Then, May looked away. There was a long moment of silence. Then, she asked.
"Who is your partner for the secret ball?"
"Now, remember it is secret. The teachers can't know about it" Maybgiggled.

So sorry for the late response! @May Moonstar

A bold thought struck Blake and his hands quickly tightened around the hem of his robe.
"I dont have a partner for the Blossom Ball, bu maybe you'd like ta go? It would be fun to go wit someone instead of alone an we could hangout somewhere less...straw covered,"He offered as nonchalantly as possible but his heart was hammering in his chest. Beyond the few other students he considered friends, he had not spoken to many people.

"Yer from Sussex? My Mum and her family are from Sussex bu I'm from round here, I live in Melrose here in Scotland even tho I don't really look like a Scot,"He grinned as his heart began to slow its dizzying pace. May was friendly enough that his embarrassment ebbed away quickly.
"Yes,"he decided happily, watching may balance on her toes and listening to her giggle, "I verra much would like ta take her ta the Ball,"he concluded with a grin.

"Oh Aye I haven't played Quiddich before, always been more of a feet-on-the-ground type lad bu I like watching it! My Da and I go to games with my Uncles every so often,"He explained happily, never having been on a broom himself. He had much preferred climbing trees to get a good view rather then balance on a broomstick.
"Ya sure have good balance, ya must be a great player,"He went on, impressed by her ability to balance on her toes. He smiled warmly as the topic of his sister came up.

"Maggie really is a great sister ya know. Take after our Mum, the two of em are the kindest and most loving people ye'd ever meet. Sometimes I jus like gettin under her skin,"He gushed, a slight rosie tint appearing in his dimpled cheeks as he explained his true admiration for his sister but he quickly masked it with a bit of brotherly-impulse.

"So what do ya say bout that Ball? Partners?"He offered boldly with a grin.

"I don't have a partner, but maybe ya like ta go?"

May blushed, but didn't say anything. She hadn't met Blake quite well. He seemed like a very friendly person. He was quite handsome, apart from his accent.
May wondered if anyone else would've wanted to go with him, been dreading to ask him, or May.
Before May could even reply, Blake said, "You're from Sussex? My mum an her family are from there, but I live in Melrose here in Scotland. Even tho I don't really look like a real Scott."
"Oh, I'm from Sussex. Well, I live there anyways. But I think I'm going to move to London sooner or later. I'm not sure." May was happy that Balke hadn't asked more questions about the Ball, but she was still considering it.

"Oh really? I've never gone to a actual Quiddich match. You know, International Quiddich and stuff," May said, quite embarrassed because this comment showed that she was a muggle born.

"But I do like flying lessons with professor Jensen. Tho I'm sad that Prof. Bercegay had to leave. She was odd, but I quite liked that," May said with a chuckle.

"Yeah, and I do ballet too. I love love love ballet," May said quietly. She had been doing ballet since she was three years old, thing that she rarely mentioned.

Now was the moment she had to decide, and fast. Was she going or not? Blake seemed like a nice boy. Like somebody that she had known for years. Well, if it was like that, she didn't have another choice than say "Yes," she said, and she turned rose pink and quickly got out of the owlry.
What a embarrassing moment!
