A Potions Congeniality

It was my first Potions class. I was really excited to finally start my favourite subject, that I had long awaited. The Potions classroom was down below, near the dungeons and the Slytherin common room. I climbed down the spiralling staircase all the way to the lowest floor.
I walked down the corridors till I reached the classroom with wooden doors ajar. The classroom set up was nice, there were many workstations set up, with a larger one placed across the room in front of the blackboard. I assumed it to be the Professor's workstation.
I was one of the first few students who arrived in the classroom. I occupied one of the workstations closer to the Professor's. It had a faucet, and a cauldron set in the centre. There was another door in the corner of the room. I wonder what lies behind that door, perhaps it was an office. There was a potted plant in a vase next to it too. The plant seemed to be moving slightly, it must be a magical one. I decided to take a look afterwards.
Soon, more students started to make their way inside, occupying workstations. I waited for someone to approach mine.

A Potions Congeniality
The day had finally arrived, my first real Potions lesson was about to begin! I couldn't wait. Clutching my books to my chest and following the directions given by the various students, I descended the stone steps of a steep spiral staircase that wound its way into the castle's depths, toward the Slytherin hall. I reached the end of the corridor, where I saw the classroom's solid wooden doors, strategically left half-closed. I took a deep breath and entered. The classroom unfolded before my eyes in all its beauty: the dark stone walls were decorated with shelves filled with glass jars containing ingredients, a large blackboard hung on the wall behind the professor's desk. Everything was perfectly neat and clean, and a mysterious atmosphere hung in the air.
The buzz was minimal, there were very few people. My eyes began darting from one corner to the other, taking in every tiny detail, but above all, searching for a seat. Then I saw it, the perfect spot, next to the professor, where another girl was already sitting. With a deep sigh, I walked briskly toward her.
I cleared my throat. "Um, hi" I said, pausing, then continuing. "Is this seat free?"

"Um, hi", said a voice, as I turned back around. It was a hufflepuff girl with pale skin and dark black hair. Her eyes were green, but they were a bit different, a lighter shade of green. Her eyes looked like those of a siren. Hmm, could she be one. Ohh that's a stupid thought, sirens only live in water. Besides, not everyone is a potential siren. But she does look pretty. I should compliment her.
I was brought out of my thoughts as she asked, "Is this seat free?" I smiled at her and replied, "Heyy, yeah, you can sit here."
As she sat beside me, I said, "I'm Avery, what's your name?" I thought of other things to say to her. My mind was blank apparently. I was always terrible at small talk, and I either got really nervous or really excited, no in-between, while speaking to someone new. I took a few seconds to decide what to say, then I spoke, "So, how's your day been so far? What do you think about Hogwarts? Are you excited for Potions? How was your experience at the sorting ceremony, did you get the house you wanted? You have very pretty eyes btw." For someone who's mind was blank seconds ago, that was a lot of questions.
I hoped she didn't think I was being too pushy and overbearing with my questions. The last thing I wanted was to be intrusive towards someone. But I was always a curious one. I sighed, waiting patiently for her reply.

I sat down next to the girl. I could see she was very shy, well, at least I wasn't the only one...
"My name is Kiara" I looked at her with a slight smile. She really had a soft face and a beautiful name. Avery.
After a few seconds, the girl I'd imagined to be shy started asking a lot of questions. I was stunned for a bit, but I wanted to get to know her. Maybe we'd get along.
"So far... um, I think I've gotten lost a few more times than the others. But at least the sorting ceremony was fun. My house is a very peaceful one, and thank you." I finally said, addressing the compliment. "And yes, I'm very excited to do potions. My family is Muggle, so it's strange to enter the wizarding world like this. And what about you? I see you're very excited for your first lesson... And what's your house like?"
I felt my heart pound with excitement and the fear of not being up to par. I straightened my school uniform, smoothing out the creases in my black robes, placed my books on my desk, and met her eyes again. I really wanted to get to know her, hoping that my Muggle nature wasn't a problem at that moment and that this conversation would become the beginning of a strong and lasting friendship for all the years to come here at Hogwarts.

She said her name was Kiara. She seemed quite patient and quiet. She listened to my questions attentively, then replied. She told me that she'd gotten lost a few times in the castle. Well, looks like I'm not the only one. She said that she had enjoyed the sorting ceremony and really liked her house. Hufflepuff is a really good house, who wouldn't like to be amongst the kind, loyal, and friendly; although that doesn't deny the fact that they could be brave and fierce when they wanted too.
She further added that she was excited for Potions too. She spoke about her family, her parents were muggles. She then asked me, "And what about you? I see you're very excited for your first lesson... And what's your house like?"
I replied, "Well, I really like Hogwarts. It's sooo cool. But I agree, the passages are quite confusing, and some staircases even shift. I'm lucky enough to find my way around. And I really like my House too, it's got a huge common room, and it's always lively in there. Honestly, I didn't expect to be in Gryffindor, I thought I'd be in Ravenclaw. But you know, the hat is never wrong."
I further added, "It's cool that you're muggleborn, this must be a really new experience for you. I hope you're not finding the wizarding ways too complicated. I'm a half-blood btw, my mom's a witch and my dad's a muggle. My mum's told me all about hogwarts, she really loved this place. From what she's said, I think I'd really like potions." My mind went to the memory of my mother telling abt her days at school. She seemed to have had so much fun. I really hoped I'd have fun, and make friends here too.
I asked her, "So Kiara, where are you from, and do you have any siblings? Also, do you have any hobbies?". I looked at her attentively, ready to get to know her better. I really wanted to become friends with her.

The girl spoke very softly, in such a calm and quiet tone that it was almost relaxing to listen to her. Unlike me, who always being somewhat clumsy in any situation, felt a little embarrassed all the time, but not Avery – everything seemed so natural to her, she talked proudly and confidently, especially about her family and about herself. 'I wonder what it would be like to be a half-blood' I thought to myself.
In order to continue our talk, I smiled politely at her again. "I'm really glad you like your house so much. Mine is also quite large and full of life, but as I was saying before, it can also be a quiet place, which is something I really like and it makes me feel good."
Next, I listened to her attentively while she talked about her mother. "Oh, so your mom was also a Hogwarts student?" I asked with admiration and curiosity. "Was she also a Gryffindor? It would be amazing to see a mother and daughter from the same house... As for the rest, there's not much to say about me, I'm an only child. My parents didn't have enough money to afford a second child, so it's always been the three of us. They both work in a clothing store, basically taking used clothes and making them like new, completely transforming them. As for my hobbies... well, I really enjoy reading books and listening to music"

Kiara listened patiently and attentively as I spoke to her. She asked, "Oh, so your mom was also a Hogwarts student? Was she also a Gryffindor? It would be amazing to see a mother and daughter from the same house." I replied, "Yeah, my mom went to Hogwarts too, but she wasn't a Gryffindor, she was a Slytherin. Everyone in her family- her parents and older brother, were all Slytherins, except her older Sister Eliza. She was a Ravenclaw. So basically, I'm the first Gryffindor in my family."
She then spoke about her family. She said she was a single child, and that her parents worked in a clothing store, where they'd take old clothes and transform them into something new. I replied, "Ohh wow! Your parents' job's so cool. I'm a single child too by the way." I further added, "My mum works in the department of mysteries, she used to be an auror. And my dad is a Senior Historic Consultant, he used to be an archeologist. We also have an antique shop."
She then told me about her hobbies, to which I replied, "That's really great! I love to read, and listen to music too. Looks like we have something in common. I have so many other hobbies as well. I sing, play the violin, horse-ride and ice-scate. I also love to travel, it's my dream to explore the world someday. Ooh, and quick question- Are you a cat person or a dog person?"
As I awaited her reply, our Potions professor started speaking. I really hoped we'd brew up some Potions today. I really wanted to work with Kiara.
