Lauren entered the owlery, holding the letter she just wrote to her aunt Loratrix in her hands. It was tightly sealed, decorated with the crimson laurel from her birthday present years ago. Satisfied with her envelope, Lauren wondered if it would make up for her attitude towards her aunt yesterday in Platform 9 3/4.
But her heart almost stopped when she saw who else was in there.
Her siblings, Arianna and Felix, huddled over a letter and a quill.
Lauren's heart itched to find out what her siblings were writing in the letter. Would it be... about her? Her being sorted into Slytherin?
She had to find out.
Creeping stealthily behind them, careful not to be seen, Lauren hid under a nearby table and read their letter:
Dear mom and dad,
How are you doing? We missed you both, and we loved your chocolate frogs! Hope you're both doing well and not bothered by FUCKING Aunt Loratrix! She's a literal Parselmouth and Slytherin, just like --
Oh, and guess what? Lauren is in SLYTHERIN! Like the worst house EVER! We can totally believe that, though. Never will she ever share the glory of Ravenclaw or become a real witch! But it's okay, she's already disowned, RIGHT?
Never mind her. Your other children are WAYYYY better than her, and we are the ones who truly deserve your precious attention! Remember the time she confessed to Aunt Loratrix that she hates the Vanes Family, a few days ago? So why should we tolerate her? She's not even a human!
All we can say is, life is going very well so far, with no younger sisters to annoy us. (NOT ARIANNA!) We love you, and we hope to hear from you both soon!
PS. Remember to make Lauren's life miserable and perhaps send her a freaking howler! Let's work together to make her the most embarrassed student in the history of Hogwarts!
Love,
Your golden children (Felix and Arianna)
Lauren watched in horror as they sealed the envelope and handed it to the fluttering family owl. It flapped its wings excitedly, resting on each of her siblings' shoulders before taking off into the sky.
It was too late. The damage was done. And probably, she was going to get embarrassed by her parents tonight. It might be by Howler, or... or something much, much worse.
Lauren watched as they prepared to leave the owlery, her letter to her aunt clutched in her hand. She needed to confront her siblings. Even if she was to be embarrassed that night, then she would make sure to the fact that her siblings were equally embarrassed. It sounded fair to her.
She waited until her siblings were half out of the libary, then grabbed Arianna's robe and stood, glaring at her. "If you're going to embarrass me tonight, then so will I," she snarled.
Crap. That was the worst opening EVER. It would tell Arianna all she needed to know -- that she, Lauren, had been spying on her and her brother. And then, maybe her sister would write another letter to their mother to attempt to humilate her further. How nice of her.
Arianna froze. Her face turned pale, and stared at Lauren in disbelief.
A whole minute passed. Then she finally spoke.
"I-I don't believe you! Stop talking nonsense! I never said anything about embarrassing you! Wait... wait.... WAIT." Her face turned the colour of snow, then red with fury.
"You-you spyed on me and your brother! You saw that letter! Sneaky filthy Slytherin, is it? I always knew nothing would come of you! Wait till I write another letter to mother and father!"
Her eyes blazing with fury, Arianna took out her quill and her bottle of ink, then scribbled furiously on the parchment. Her hand shook as she wrote, ink spilling occasionally.
Mom and dad,
Read the other owl before this. Because, I'm telling you ONE THING:
Lauren was spying on me and Felix when we wrote the previous letter. So, you HAVE to make sure that she gets punished as miserably as possible. I'll thank you forever for that.
I don't give a fuck on whether Lauren is watching me right now, because I NEED her to know this. She said that she would make sure to the fact that I got embarrassed, too. So as our beautiful mom, you have to make sure that she doesn't succeed. This is for the sake of the Vanes Family. This is for our PURITY. You both value that more than ANYTHING, right? Right?
When she comes home from Hogwarts, let's work together to punish Lauren as harshly as possible. I'll tell Felix that really soon, you don't need to worry. If she embarrasses me or Felix OR tells any of her petty Slytherin friends about what we did, I'll owl you straightaway. If you want, you can keep a list on what Lauren has done just to scare her out of her skin.
P.S. Don't mention what Lauren did today because I don't want others to think that me and Felix are unable to protect our privacy. Pretty please?
Your amazing daughter,
Arianna Vanes
Lauren shook as she read the letter. So, she was right. Her family just wanted her to be as unhappy and embarrassed as possible. Just what I would expect, she thought bitterly.
She watched as Arianna folded the letter, put it inside a white envelope, and tied it to a school owl's leg. The owl flew off, the envelope dangling. Arianna shut the window, staring gleefully at Lauren.
"There," she growled with a dangerous edge to her voice. "That's a typical day for you, loser. Right now, I better catch up with Felix."
Arianna threw the remainder of her bottle of ink towards Lauren, then slammed the door.
Sighing, Lauren tied her crimson envelope at another school owl's leg, patting its head. The fur felt soft and made her feel like she was lying on a cozy bed, her worries forgotten.
But that wasn't reality. And she needed to focus on reality right now, or she might just be embarrassed by her family that night. With her luck, a Howler would fly into the Great Hall, splash food everywhere, and scream her name so that everyone in the school would think of her as "the girl who got scolded".
What have I done to deserve this? she thought.
