A Dance with Fate
Clary's mind was still reeling over the events of Quidditch try-outs as she wandered into the empty hall, having made a wrong turn while attempting to track down the rehearsal room. Had she utterly failed try-outs? Did she pick the correct positions? Would it be okay if she didn't own a school broom? She shook her head, knowing she shouldn't dwell on the past, and stepped tentatively into the room, her footsteps echoing around the hall. With a resounding bump, the door clicked closed behind her and the young Ravenclaw First Year found herself standing in a giant ballroom, illuminated by the elegantly hanging chandeliers and light filtering in through the tall, arched windows.
Dropping her satchel bag by the door, Clary looked around the space with awe. Not only was it empty for the moment, but it was the perfect space for doing... well exactly what she was doing was yet to be determined, but surely she'd come up with something during her exploration of the space. At the far left side of the room, a giant version of an old-fashioned disk player stood, fit with a giant fog-horn shaped speaker that looked a little bit like a tunnel.
Fiddling with the speaker, she placed the dial onto the disk and jumped back in shock, falling to the ground and knocking the disk aside in the process, probably making enough ruckus the whole castle could hear.

Evan was unfortunate enough to enter before the loud speaker attack to the castle's ears. He had been interested by the lighting and wanted to investigate. He was new to the castle grounds, and wanted to find something interesting. Something fun. Something worth his time. It seemed today he had found it. An incredible display of a... ballroom was visible in front of the astonished first year. He stared at the ceiling, at the incredible chandeliers. For several moments, he thought he'd fall to the ground as looking up for so long made him lose his balance, it was so beautiful. Thankfully, he managed to save himself before gravity defeated him and got him onto the ground.
Then the worst part happened. Claryssa's fiddling with the speakers took the boy by surprise and Evan was a nanosecond away from landing on the floor. A second miracle, however, resulted with him staying on his feet, hands covering his ears. Light moaning came out of his mouth, but it was far too quiet to be audible, especially since the girl's meddling had taken up all the area of sound; how selfish. When the sound appeared to get slower and weaker, he finally turned to face the girl behind it all. "Hey!" The poor Gryffindor called, "That's not cool, ya know?" He moaned, his hands still protecting his ears as if to prove a point.

Luke had begun to wander the corridors of the school, sure of his ability to find the Griffindor common room again (a reference point for this labyrinth of a school, if it was needed). His quick step echoed through the halls as he poked his head in room after room, some of which he was booted out of quite promptly. Lucas didn't seem to mind, it was more about getting a grip on where everything was.
He was slowly losing interest in his little adventure (and getting pretty lost, as much as he'd refuse to admit it), at least until he heard an embarrassingly loud clatter from an unexplored corridor. With an odd sense of glee, he found himself quite quickly at where he predicted the sound had come from. A door, firmly closed, stood in front of him. It's never stopped him before, why should it now? As he would in his own bedroom, he swung the door open and stepped inside.
In a quick succession, many things happened. Luke spotted a girl who appeared to be sat on the floor and a boy who seemed a shade irritated. He also got a quick glance at the room inside, an expansive hall that was gracefully decorated. It felt like he'd walked into a school dance, but fancier and creepier. Soon after both of these observations, Luke's feet found themselves in unexpected contact with a bag. The rest of Luke's body came soon after as the boy tripped, saved from an embarrassing faceplant with his right arm. He grunted as he looked up.

"Sorry!" Clary squeaked, shakily helping herself up to her feet. She scrambled over to the record player, pulling the dial off of the record to halt the painful scratching that was echoing its way around the acoustic hall. She winced, quickly stepping back/stumbling away from the player once the noise had been cut off. Her ears still ringing, Clary glanced around the space, swearing she'd heard someone call out something over the noise. After a moment of darting around, her eyes targeted the young Gryffindor boys, tossing them an apologetic look. This technically wasn't her fault that she was so untalented at working the ancient record device. In the muggle world, a classic electronic speaker was much more convenient and efficient to use. Of course, this wasn't the muggle world.
Shaking her head as if quietly laughing at her own joke, Clary dashed over to the Gryffindor boy on the ground, painfully aware of each of her footsteps reverberating around the space. She finished her journey right in front of him and offered her hand to help him up, attempting to hide her embarrassment with a blunt, but friendly, greeting "Seems my bag doesn't like you too much," she apologized, also offering quick nod of her head in geeetijg to the second boy who'd yelled out the insult. Once the one on the group had been helped up, she continued, "This place is pretty cool, though, huh?"

"Yeah, yeah." Luke was dismissive, electing to help himself up and shaking the girl's open hand as greeting instead. His voice was clear and direct, mannerisms limited save for his aloof confidence. "Lucas King. Everyone I meet just calls me King, and I'm not complaining."
He began to wander around the empty space, hands in his robe's pockets. He tried with some effort to see what the girl saw in this place, but he found it difficult. The wide, empty room didn't seem much more than something out of a horror film; if he was honest. "I'd say more eerie than cool." The clatter of his new shoes reverberated around the room softly as he took in his surroundings. "What's this place even for?" His head was raised as he looked to the high ceilings. "If I came all the way here just to learn how to dance..." After what felt like an eternity lost in thought, Luke looked down from the ceilings and to the girl. "I didn't catch your name, did I?" He directed his focus at Clary, the end of his shoes pointing toward her. He grinned as he did so, perhaps not feeling the hesitance he should've.

Clary was a bit surprised by the boy's bluntness, but appreciative that he quickly put the awkward encounter behind them. She dropped her hand as he wandered across the room, scanning the space with a strange expression of judgy disappointment where Clary only saw wonder. Perhaps he was from a wizard family and commonly accustomed to scenes like this one, but for Clary, everything was new and exciting.
Hearing Luke pronounce the space as eerie, Claryssa shrugged, not offering her personal opinion once again on the topic. Upon his first question, she replied with the obvious answer. "It's a ball room, duh! It's only in use though during certain times of the year, whenever a dance is hosted, yada yada. Most of the time, it's sorrily abandoned, but a nice place to hang out, don't you think?" Clary 'danced' over to him, spinning around to scan the full extent of the space. The room was enormous, and she found with mild amusement that her voice echoed around the room as she spoke.
"Oh! Almost forgot. My name's Claryssa North, though everyone I meet here doesn't call me North. I also mainly go by Clary..." Her voice trailed off, realizing she was rambling. She shook her head, smiling to herself for a moment at her own stupidity. "I'm also a Ravenclaw, if that's not obvious,"she added with a playful grin. "If you came here to dance, I will have to alert you that I may or may not have broken the recorder..."

"A Ravenclaw, hm?" Lucas nodded, now realising why the bag had been such a hazard for him. She probably had a whole library stuffed in there. "Either way, it's pleasure, Clary." He watched her twirl around the room, grinning at something as simple as an echo. As funny as it was to him, he also found himself thinking it was quite endearing. Outwardly, he appeared quite aloof, but he was internally very aware he hadn't made many... any... friends yet. There were the other Griffindors, who were never short of welcoming, but there'd been no one Luke had truly clicked with as of yet. Dismissing the small voice in his head that talked about fraternising with the enemy, he decided this dizzy Ravenclaw was as good a friend as any. Maybe even better.
"The recorder is probably for the best, I'd have to know how to dance to start dancing." He knew that he could do an abysmal robot dance, and he considered that his wildcard. "I'll assume you do though, that's some pretty professional twirling." He took his bag off his shoulder, finally, and rested it against the nearest wall before coming back to his old spot. His aloof facade beginning to crack, he let out a little bit of the built-up excitement within him. "This place is pretty cool. Not just the ballroom, but Hogwarts."

Clary raised an eyebrow at the way he said "Ravenclaw", almost as if it was an explanation to some passively judgemental thought he had in his head about her. Although Clary had met a fair number of people since her first arrival at Hogwarts, she found Lucas to be surprisingly near the top of her list, alongside Lou, Kae, and the Slytherin girl who she believed to be named Kendra. Perhaps Clary was in need of some new friends herself when she could barely remember the names of the few quality ones she possessed. Sure, people tended to come and stop by at times, but were they really considered a true friend when all they did was occasionally nod their head and murmur a quick, "Hello!" while passing by?
Claryssa stopped spinning around, laughing at his comment and turned around to face him. "You wander into a ballroom and you can't even dance?" She gasped! "I'd hardly say I'm a professional, but I am a solid believer in the quote, 'Fake it 'til you make it'. Not all of us Ravenclaws are lucky enough to be gifted with a solid standard of intelligence," she mused, the lights seeming to dance around the room as her mind re-oriented itself from the movement. The ballroom was massive, and though perhaps eerie to the unkeen eye, she saw sparkling candlelight and shimmering wonders hiding behind the shadowy corners of the vaulted ceiling.
"As far as Hogwarts itself goes, I'd say that's an understatement. It's a thousand times better than anywhere I've been on this earth, but then again, I come from a muggle family. We don't have floating candles, talking paintings, or even floating books, for that matter. It's probably annoying seeing me leap around at the first signs of anything lesser than mundane when you grew up with it daily," she apologized, realizing she probably looked a bit crazy from the point of view of the presumably wizard-born boy.

"No, don't worry about it. You're... alright." He suppressed a smile, becoming more aware of how quick the girl was to excuse herself. Considering how far out of his nature that kind of behaviour was, he found it very odd. He felt like Clary needed to be cut a little slack, and so the bold approach he had adopted diminished further.
"I've had a taste of the Muggle world, and I can't say I'm a fan." He cast his mind back to the not-Magic Shop his dad owned. He'd often sit on the steps next to the counter (having no better place to be), watching Muggles and a couple of confused wizards eyeballing the pseudo-magic trinkets lining the shelves, breaking the bank for pretty stones and snowglobes. All the time, he'd think about the world he had to pretend didn't exist. Diving into the world of magic with his tutor, endless evenings spent flying on his mercilessly slow broom. He'd go mad if he had to leave it all behind, which brought him back to the girl staring at him. The more they shared, the more respect he felt for her. He re-invested himself in the conversation, realising he'd drifted off into thought again. How was he ever going to pay attention for a whole hour of sitting down?
"As for dancing, I'm making you put your money where your mouth is." He grinned, finally speaking again. Dancing was a Muggle thing, right? He'd decided it probably wasn't best to talk about magic, at least not for now. "You said it yourself, fake it till you make it. Time to start faking." He folded his arms, hands vanishing under his robes, before nodding to Clary, almost as an indication to go.

Claryssa raised an eyebrow, not exactly sure what the Gryffindor boy had meant by the term "alright". Considering the situation at hand, she was probably coming off as a completely frazzled Ravenclaw, so perhaps her first impressions weren't always the best, not that she really cared. Luke seemed kind enough, if not a slight bit bold with conversation, but then again, wasn't that what most Gryffindors were all about?
As Lucas continued, she discovered she'd been correct in her assumption that the boy came from a wizarding family. It was pretty obvious from the start based on the way he viewed the space, almost as if he were unimpressed by the mystical objects Clary found far from the mundane. She honestly wasn't too much of a fan of the muggle world herself, where no flying brooms, potions, or spells could keep you out of trouble or assist you in times of need. Hogwarts, by far, was definitely the better end of the spectrum, but nonetheless, Clary couldn't help but ask, "What do you hate so much about it? Aside from the fact that everything is probably boring... mundane... an- okay, yeah I see your point."
As the conversation continued, she felt herself shaking her head, a slight smile tugging at the edge of her lips. Of all things, the Gryffindor boy wanted her to dance! He probably should've known from the incident with the recorder that she was already a total clutz, and at most, this situation could only end in disaster. Uncomfortable with the idea of dancing alone, Clary's eyes wandered around the space for a moment while she thought up a plan. Technically, this was a ballroom, meant for ballroom dancing. Had she ever ballroom danced before? Nope, but she was pretty sure she needed a partner.
"Hm, time for you to start faking it as well. This is a ballroom, is it not? Waltzing's a partner dance." She smirked and gestured for Luke to join her, pretty sure she remembered the basics. The steps were in 3/4, in a sort of triangular pattern. Too bad she broke the recorder, but it was probably for the best. She doubted, even if dancing alone, she'd be able to keep up with whatever crazy tune the old music player managed to sputter out.
