Academic Duo
Cassie heads straight to the library after dinner, as usual. The moment the steps into the grand room, time feezes in an instant. The huge doors at the entrance seem to separate the library from the rest of the castle. The noises and the trouble are all shut out beyond the door.
After looking around for a while, Cassie picks a seat by the huge window, which is one of her favourite seats. Since she comes to the library straight after dinner, the library is still quite empty. She takes a deep breath, enjoying the smell of parchment. Quietly, she lays her stack of books on the desk, adjusts her chair, takes out a piece of parchment, dips her quill in ink and dives into the world of knowledge.
She is writing her Defense Against the Dark Arts essay, perfect for studying in the evening. She turns her textbook page by page, drawing a mind map on an empty piece of parchment to brainstorm ideas and to sort out her thoughts. Immersed in studying, she loses track of time. By the time she puts down her quill and decides to have a rest before previewing her lessons tomorrow, two hours have passed. She smiles as she looks away from her watch.
The library is crowded with students by now...

Iris was working close to Cassie, even though she didn't know Cassie or that they were both working on the same thing. Iris was also working an essay though it wasn't the same one since she's only in her first year. Her quill was quick at work and little did she know that she was almost out of ink. She was quickly and swiftly writing word after word between fast dips in her beautiful black ink when suddenly she dipped in her ink and she noticed that her pen didn't get coated with ink.
She only happened to notice when her pen no longer wrote the words that she was trying to write. She tried to scribble on the page but the only thing that happened was little scratches appearing on her paper instead of the bold black ink she used for all of her writing.
"Darned pen!" She said loudly to herself and slammed her pen down aggressively. She pushed the paper away and stood up. When she stood she almost nearly bumped into a few students near her.
She blushed slightly at her own sudden lash out and behavior but she was frustrated because she was in a groove, and now she had gone and lost her train of thought. She hated when that happened. She looked around anxiously hoping that no one had actually seen that happen.

Cassie suddenly hears a loud sound of a quill banging against the wooden desk. 'Not again.' Cassie sighs in her mind. 'Who's that this time.' A few months ago, she met a Slytherin girl who refused to pack her things before she left. Cassie tried to remind her, but she did not listen. Cassie hasn't seen that girl after that day, nor does she know who the girl is. But one thing for sure, it was certainly not a pleasant memory.
Cassie looks up and sees a Gryffindor girl standing up suddenly from her seat. She has a frustrated look on her face. Probably another poor first year who cannot control her emotions when she faces problems in academics, Cassie guesses. Should she ask the girl if she can help her? Cassie hesitates. She does not to quarrel with another student, but she doesn't want to hear such noises when she is studying again. Deep inside, she thinks that the girl might be kind, all she needs is a helping hand from another student.
Thinking of that, Cassie stands up from her seat and walks to the girl. 'Hi, I'm Cassie Jiang, a third year Ravenclaw.' she introduces herself in a soft voice. 'Is there anything I can help you with?'
She waits for the girl's response. Hope she will not quarrel with me. she thinks...

Iris looks up when she hears the sound of another voice. She blushes slightly from embarrassment, her face only turned about as red as the inside of a watermelon, subtle, but there if you looked close. 'So somebody HAD heard that noise.' She thought to herself.
She had all but nearly forgotten that she was not the only person in the library. She couldn't help but wonder who else had heard her extremely loud outburst.
She took a deep breath then fully turned to the girl who had introduced herself as a third year student named Cassie Jiang. Iris nodded and then extended her hand for a proper greeting, since she knew that, that's what you do when you introduce yourself, you always offer a handshake. She didn't know what but it was rule number one of introductions.
Iris then smiled slightly, rule number two of introductions. As much as she hated social interactions she did had the rules and regulations for them down pat.
"Ah. Nice to meet you Cassie. I'm Iris. Iris Marlowe, first year Gryffindor."
She paused for a moment then lightly scratched the back of her head and laughed awkwardly.
"So sorry if I interrupted your studying or something. My pen ran out of into just when I was starting to get into the flow of an essay... So hopefully you understand my frustration." She babbled on.
Iris tended to do that, which was one of the reasons that she hated social interactions because she got so nervous that she babbled about basically nothing.
After a moment she looked back up at Cassie almost hoping that the girl even understood just a little bit about why Iris was upset and that she wasn't looking or sounding as ridiculous as she felt at the moment.

Much to Cassie's surprise, the girl blushes and holds out her hand. Still surprised, Cassie takes her hand and shakes it. Then, the girl smiles. No longer feeling angry, Cassie smiles warmly too. Instead of rude words, the girl introduces herself. Iris Marlowe Cassie repeats her name in her thoughts, a polite and friendly girl indeed. 'Nice to meet you Iris.' Cassie replies.
The Gryffindor girl then explains why she was making loud noises. Running out of ink when getting into the flow of an essay? Sounds terrible. Knowing the reason behind, Cassie begins to leave a good impression on the girl. 'Oh my,' Cassie exclaims, 'that's awful!' She starts looking for her extra bottle of ink in her bag, but it is not there. 'I forget to take my extra bottle of ink with me today. Would you mind sitting at my desk? We can use the same bottle for now.' she suggests. Cassie would never miss a chance of helping others.
'I totally understand how terrible you must feel back then.' Cassie says when the girl apologizes. 'No need to be sorry. We all get frustrated sometimes. But trust me, you will get back to the flow of your essay much more quickly than the first time.' Cassie says, according to her own experience while writing essays.

Iris watches like a hawk when Cassie first offers to give her a spare ink bottle, she hadn't been expecting that, and she didn't know what to say exactly so she opted to say nothing instead. For a few seconds she just sat almost completely still and watched Cassie search. Should she offer to help? Maybe not that would be weird.
Then, Cassie talked again and Iris's eyes flash up from Cassie's bag to her face instead. She frowned slightly but nodded when Cassie said that she didn't have the extra ink after all. Though she didn't say it, Iris felt a bit relieved because she was bad at remembering to return things and she would have worried that she wouldn't return the bottle to Cassie if she borrowed it.
Iris listened as Cassie now offered to share her bottle of ink with her. This was so nice of Cassie and she hadn't expected that especially after Iris very loudly got mad about simply running out of ink in a library full of people like she has been alone in her house not at Hogwarts where literally anyone can see or hear her at any time.
After a long moment Iris sat but Cassie, nodded and then spoke.

Then she paused and looked at Cassie. Then she spoke again.
"You said you're a third year? Maybe you can help me. This is actually a History of Magic essay. I'm really good at spell casting and things like that but not very good at subjects like History of Magic or Herbology. So I am a bit out of my element for this essay."

Cassie smiles when the first year Gryffindor agrees to sit with her at the desk. The girl has thought for a while before she makes her decision. Cassie wonders what she is thinking, but she does not ask. Normally, she would prefer to study alone, but now that she is pretty sure that the girl is friendly and polite, she is looking forward to this opportunity of making a new friend.
'Here.' she says as she places her bottle of black ink between them. 'I usually use black ink since it looks formal, but I am planning to buy some colourful ones this Saturday.' Cassie says as she looks forward to her trip to Hogsmeade.
After the girl thanks Cassie, Cassie is about to dive into her own essay. Just then, she hears the Gryffindor girl ask Cassie if she can help her with her History of Magic essay. Smiling happily, Cassie agrees at once. 'Sure!' she says, 'I'm very glad to help. I agree that History of Magic is sometimes boring, but it will get more and more interesting through the years!' she says. It has been quite long since someone last asked Cassie to help them with their academics. She always feels excited when she can help someone with their academics.
'What's the topic?' she asks, recalling the first year lessons. 'Magic in Ancient cultures like Ancient Mesopotamia? Or the history of Hogwarts? Or...' she can't remember the rest clearly, seems like she needs to do some review.

Iris looks at the ink bottle as it gets placed between the two of them. She offers a weak smile as another silent thank you. As she listens to Cassie asking how she can help Iris adjusts her buns and nods along as Cassie talks.
"Oh yeah it's the Meso... What is it called again? Mesopotamia?" She says struggling a bit with the pronunciation.
"Heh. Sorry." She rubs the back of her neck awkwardly. Her face turned a slight tint of pink from embarrassment of not even knowing how to pronounce the word even though Cassie had just said it.
This is why she didn't like history. There are so many words that were hard to pronounce and she didn't even know why she was required to know all of these stupid words. Especially if the classes had things that weren't magic related which all of them seemed to have. But she didn't mention any of those frustrations out loud with the fear of being judged.
"Like I said... History isn't really my thing." She said with a nervous chuckle and another rub of the back of her neck.
