After leaving the comfort of the Hufflepuff dormitory early in the morning, Errol had somehow managed to officially get herself lost in the maze that was Hogwarts. For what felt like forever, which was actually an hour, she awkwardly clung to the walls of the hall, dodging the crowd as she shuffled forward in search of the Transfiguration class, but at this point, she would even be happy to stumble back into her dorm before night fell. This is horrid, Errol thought to herself as she pinched the inside of her robe's sleeves, a nervous habit she was slowly beginning to pick up at the school. In the past she had been home-schooled, forced to either sit in the dining room or in the garden outside as she read- never in her life had she been forced to suffer through finding her classroom in a beyond crowded hallway.
Errol didn't have to fear being overwhelmed by her classes- not when she would never get to them. With a heavy sigh, Errol leaned against the window of the hall, at least she knew one thing; she was not on the ground level of the school, too bad she didn't know where the steps were so she could go down. Pressing her forehead she gazed outside longingly, she was off to a horrible start- maybe she could ask one of the other students for help? Stressfully, Errol's right hand brushed through her tangled jasper red curls as she glanced over her shoulder at the flowing crowd. Her eyes searched for someone- anyone -who could offer the help she needed.

Another red-headed girl hopped up and down in crowd, trying to see over the heads of people who were about a foot taller than her. Eris was hopelessly lost. She had started to follow the crowd of students out of the Great Hall in hope of them leading her to her potions class, but after nearly being trampled on by dozens of taller kids, Eris staggered out of the crowd. To her growing horror and dismay, Eris had no idea where on earth she was in the castle. She looked around, desperately trying to ask anybody in the crowd if they could help her find her class. Eris was about to slump over and give up, when she saw a red-headed girl with extremely curly hair by the window. She had her forehead pressed against the glass, staring outside. Maybe she knew where Eris was. She seemed confident enough in her surroundings to turn her back on the crowd and look out the window, so maybe she could guide Eris to the potions classroom.
When the girl turned around, Eris finally approached her with a timid smile. She looked friendly enough, but a little anxious. Maybe she was also a first year? "Excuse me, but do you happen to know where we are? Eris said, heart beating in her chest.
Was that a good enough introduction, or did she come off as weird? What if the girl thought she was weird and wouldn't tell Eris were they were? Eris's leg started shaking against the floor, as her foot tap, tapped, tapped against the stone floors. It was something Eris always did when anxious. Noticing her leg shaking, Eris stopped shaking it, although her foot still was tapping against the floor, almost to softly for one to hear it was still tapping. Eris seemed to take comfort in the soft noise though, as she managed to quiet her rapid train of thoughts, and focus on the girl in front of her, not the thoughts racing through her head.

When Errol had first made eye-contact with the fellow red-head, her heart skipped a beat- she had found her saviour! Yet once the girl had approached, Errol could see the same lost and in desperate need of help look in her green eyes, she knew she had found a kindred lost spirit. A frown deepened upon her face, not only had she managed to get herself lost but she would also be disappointing someone in the process; today was not a good day. "I'm sorry," she said shyly, her shoulders slouching. "but I've been lost for almost an hour myself." she admitted without hesitation, but she did look at the small space of ground between them, too afraid to meet the girl's disappointed gaze. "But um...maybe if we stick together we could manage to find our way around?" The offer was small but maybe if she agreed the two could get somewhere.
Awkwardly, due to being unsure of how the girl would react to her proposal, Errol brushed a few curls behind her ear even though she knew the attempt to keep the red coils out of her face would be futile, her hair seemed to be alive. It bounced when she walked, it almost constantly clawed at her face in an attempt to blind her, yet worst of all, it refused to obey her. She had a mountain of broken hair ties that proved just how unruly her red curls truly were, yet none of that stopped her from brushing her hair back whenever she felt like she had disappointed someone, it was just a habit she never shook and probably never would.

Eris shoulders sank in disappointment, as the other girl responded. Great, now she was really in royal trouble. Eris frowned, biting down on the side of her mouth, as she thought about the girl's offer. It would be nice to have a friend while wandering the halls, and Eris did love to talk to people. Maybe the other girl was looking for the potions classroom too. It really would be nice to wander the halls with somebody else for once, instead of on her own or with a large crowd of people, who trampled over the shorter first years, especially Eris. If only she was taller.
Eris studied the fellow redhead, as she played with her hair. Her hair was really pretty, and she seemed nice. "I'm Eris." She said, offering a smile. "I figure if we're sticking together, we should at least know each other's names." Eris rocked back and forth on the heels of her feet, trying to think of what else to say to the other girl. Finally she blurted out, "I really like your hair!" Eris wasn't one for keeping secrets, when she thought something, whether it be good or bad, she normally blurted it out. Hoping she hadn't scared the other girl with her forwardness, Eris looked out the window behind the girl, not wanting to met the other girl's eyes.
What if she thought Eris was weird, or too forward and Eris lost her only chance at having a shot of getting to her potions classroom? Eris took a deep breath, trying to calm her rapidly beating heart, as she continued staring out the window.

A smile graced Errol's face, "I'm Errol, it's nice to meet you." A slight blush rose to the surface of her cheeks as she realized she still had her fingers trapped in her curls, giving a shy chuckle she withdrew her hand from her head "Thank you, I like yours too," she gave a slight nod to the girl. While Errol had a mighty mane of curls, Eris had the straight and silky hair she had always envied, the same type of hair her mother and younger sister had, even if it wasn't the same midnight black as theirs.
With her hand now away from her hair, it found its way to the folds of her robe where it was buried in the dark fabric. She watched as the girl gazed out into the scenery Errol herself had been staring at moments before, a nervous glint in the girl's eyes told her that Eris was just as anxious as she was- if not maybe even more. "So," Errol chirped. "Which classroom are you trying to head to?" she asked, saying 'trying' instead of 'going' because like her the girl had no idea where she was headed, at least not in this crowded maze.

Errol. That was quite a pretty name, Eris thought absent-mindlessly, as she turned away from the window and looked back at the girl. Eris smiled when Errol complimented her hair, as she quickly responded, "Thank you!" Her hair was nowhere near as pretty as Errol's. Eris had always wanted her hair to be curly. It was a dream of hers to have hair so curly and bouncy that it bounced up and down with every step. Although Eris would never say that out loud, she couldn't help but envision what it would be like to have curly hair like the hufflepuff girl had.
Errol was dislodging her hand from her hair, and Eris watched her doing it, fascinated by the simple motions and Errol's curly hair. Then Errol had her hand out of her hair, Eris grinned at her fellow red-headed girl, "I'm attempting to head to potions, although by the time I get there, class will most definitely be over." Eris said it with a faint smile still, although she was quite worried about missing potions.
"What class are you heading too?" Eris asked, for the sake of being polite. Maybe she could help Errol find her class, and Errol could point her in the right direction--although they'd both established they were quite lost. Eris didn't want to brave the crowd of people again, so maybe they could just stay by the window. That would be nice. Eris always enjoyed talking to new people, and the hufflepuff girl seemed nice. Then again, most hufflepuffs Eris had met were nice. Was there such thing as a mean hufflepuff? Eris's friend Ava said all hufflepuffs were nice, but maybe the girl in front of her could tell Eris if it was true that all hufflepuffs were nice, after a while. Eris didn't want to make an awkward conversation more awkward by asking about hufflepuffs..yet.

Errol couldn't help but let out a bark of laughter, finding it funny that Eris had asked her what class she was heading to when in reality the girl had given up on finding the classroom long ago and was instead searching for a way to get back onto the ground level of the school where she could step foot outside and not feel so trapped by the suffocating stone walls of the school. "I was trying to find the Transfiguration room," she admitted honestly, feeling no need to lie about the location she had been previously searching for. "It was somewhere on the seventh floor, but I haven't been able to get up there. Now I'd be happy just getting back on the ground floor." She said with a playful smile.
Instead of feeling upset about failing to reach her destination, she found it incredibly funny how lost she had managed to get in a matter of a single hour. She was a bit upset that she would be missing one of her classes on her very first day, anyone would be if they were sane and an obedient student like Errol wanted to be, but somethings couldn't be helped and she was positive that if she ever did find the classroom and explained that no matter how hard she searched she simply couldn't get onto the seventh floor, never mind finding the Transfiguration classroom, the teacher would understand and excuse her just this once. Rather than stressing about it, Errol would rather prefer to shrug her shoulders- things happened. Instead, she wondered if it would be better if Eris and she explored the corridors of the school, getting a feel for how the classrooms were laid out so that tomorrow, on their second day, they would be able to head to class without a hitch.
At least one good thing did come out of being utterly lost; Errol had managed to meet Eris, a seemingly nice girl who just like her, was stuck wondering the halls of the school like one of the many ghosts that haunted the school, seemingly forever searching for their classrooms. Mischievously grinning at her new partner in travelling through the school, Errol raised her eyebrows. "Maybe we should just skip for today and explore the school instead?" The adventure seemed very un-Hufflepuff like, at least Errol thought so, but what was she going to do? Spend all day on a hopeless quest to find her classroom?By exploring Hogwarts she was doing herself a great favour, along with Eris, in preventing themselves from further skipping any more lessons in the near future due to being consumed in the maze of corridors.

Eris giggled, as the other girl replied that she had given up on going to her class, and was just looking for the first floor. Her face broke into a smile too, "I guess we're both hopelessly lost." She said, shrugging her shoulders in an expression of playful hopelessness. She was quite guilty to be missing a class on her first day, but it was hard to find her way around in the massive castle. There were doors that were just solid walls pretending to be doors, ghosts that swooped around and attempted to guide the first years to the right room, or more troublesome ones that tried to guide the first years to the wrong places. And it wasn't safe to stay near the walls, as the paintings talked! It was terrifying when a painting asked if you needed help, and the first time it had happened, Eris had nearly fallen down in shock. It wasn't exactly bad, but Eris still wasn't used to it. She wasn't used to so many people talking to her, after spending months on the streets and barely speaking at all. It was worse that the new people talking to her just so happened to be, well ... ghosts and paintings.
At least, being lost had benefited Eris, sort of. She had found another first-year wandering the halls, and even though they were going to separate classrooms, perhaps they could hang out for a while. It was dreadfully lonely wandering the halls on her own. Eris turned to express that particular sentiment to Errol, but the girl had already asked about skipping class.
It was their first day. If there was any day that was okay to miss, it was the first day. That's when they normally just would sit through orientation in muggle schooling. It couldn't be that different in wizard school. Eris would have all year to learn magic and sit through her classes. Plus, it was better to learn her way around the castle now, with a friend, so she wouldn't get lost in the future.
"Sure. Let's just find our way around and explore." Eris said, smiling at the other girl. "That way we hopefully won't find ourselves lost again after today." It seemed like a solid plan to Eris.

Nearly jumping up like a puppy from excitement, Errol instead beamed a bright smile at the girl that was nearly as bright as the sun and almost as warm as she grabbed onto Eris's hand. It slipped out of her mind that some people might find the skin-to-skin contact unwelcoming, mostly since the two girls had just met, but Errol was used to not having to worry about things like that, at least with her family. Gentle she gave a friendly squeeze as she chuckled. "I guess we're buddies now," she said happily- Eris was the second person to befriend the Hufflepuff, the one beating her to the punch was Gray, a fellow Hufflepuff, but that didn't matter to Errol, for she believed the more the merrier.
A giggle passed her lips, a piece of excitement she had been unable to control to the point it had crawled out from the depth of her stomach where a swarm of pixies seemed to have nested. Between exploring and finally making a friend who was a girl, Errol didn't know which one was more exciting as studied the fellow red-head. Now that they were closer, Errol realized she was a tad bit taller than Eris, her long legs limbs making it so that she was a tall lanky thing that seemed to have no meat on her bones. She looked like a frog, all long limbs with large disproportioned eyes, at least that's what her cousins told her while growing up, while her grandmother swore that someday, when the time was right, Errol would grow into her body. All she needed to do was make sure she ate, which by her Maimeó's standards was eating a pot full of lamb stew by herself. Now at measuring distance, Errol could see that the top of Eris's head reached somewhere around her own forehead, but nothing was wrong with that. The two were still growing girls, thankfully.
"So which way should we go?" Errol questioned as she looked away from Eris, her eyes travelling up and down the hall, watching the flow of the crowd as they walked on their own respectful side of the hall as if some unspoken agreement had been made that one side of the hall was for walking right and the other for walking left. There was a small flutter of anxiety within Errol's stomach, a small fear that she'd forever be trapped within the school, roaming the halls as just another ghost, but for the most part, her inner explorer was eager to begin the journey and investigate her new home.

When Errol grabbed Eris's hand, the other girl went very still. It wasn't that she was scared of the hand-to-hand contact, it was just that she hadn't been touched by another human in a long time. Simple acts of friendship and caring were almost unheard of in Eris's world. The last time somebody had grabbed her hand, it had been Eris's sister. Eris stood there, too shocked to even move. Finally, when the other girl grinned and said, "I guess we're buddies now." Eris managed to snap out of her haze, and beam at the other girl, in return, smile spreading over her whole face.
"I guess we are buddies now," Eris giggled too, unable to help herself. Errol's laugh was contagious, and Eris found herself feeling carefree. The weight on her shoulders caused by the stress of missing class and finding her way around school was slowly dissipating, as Eris watched the other girl. When Errol asked where too, Eris had to think for a second, before responding.
"I don't know. I guess we can go wherever we want?" Eris said it more as a question. Truth be told, she had no idea were they were, or any of the rooms in the castle, excluding her own classes. She had barely even looked at the list of classes she had anyways, being too busy unpacking and recovering from an unfortunate incident involving the Hogwarts Express and a demonic creature known as an acid salamander. Eris couldn't help but feel excited at the prospect of exploring the halls of Hogwarts, with her new friend. The prospects were just as endless as the rooms in Hogwarts.
