Gryffindor v Slytherin Spring '26 Quidditch

Nothing in the boisterous boy’s life felt better than being back in the Quidditch pitch—right where he belonged, as if bred for the very sport.

It had been a long time coming achieving the prestigious title of first string following Alphonse’s debut performance among the lions, and the Haitian was determined to make them proud. With a new Autumn Cruise in hand—courtesy of some generous Gryffindors—Alphonse finally took to the air and sent a confident nod to Harlan’s direction.

It had taken most of the year, but Silas was finally officially on the Quidditch team. He was starting off only on the bench for this match, but he was sure that, soon, he’d be able to show his natural talent and it would convince the captains (or whoever made the decisions here) to put him on the field from the beginning of a game. He was, thus, unashamedly waiting for the downfall of his teammates so that he could get a chance to be involved in the actual play.

He turned to look at the Gryffindor bench, upon which sat his first friend at Hogwarts, @Oonagh Brown. She had been the one to introduce him to this sport in the first place, and now here they were, sitting on the benches of opposite teams, both as Beaters. He cupped his hands around his mouth and yelled, “Oi! Tosser!” Hopefully, she would recognise the sound of his voice and look at him, since he was trying to catch her eye. If he was successful in that, he would make a rude gesture and pull a face at her, then smirk and look up, waiting for more of the action to begin.

Second-String Actions

Silas stared out at the match, seemingly energising himself for a hopeful entrance later. Meanwhile, one of his teammates hadn't shown up yet, and the other two girls on the bench - Chaewon and Isabeau - both sent up raucous cheers for Percival...

...which were cancelled out by equally raucous boos against the seventh-year Beater from the Gryffindor bench. Oonagh and Hana sure did have powerful lungs. Their other benched teammates, Avery and Laasya, huddled together in an attempt to strategise, but nothing good would come out of the planning session; perhaps they'd been distracted by their teammates' incessant and rather negative yelling.

The Quaffle

Perhaps desperate to rack up some points on their season totals, two members of each team dove for the dull red leather ball (had someone forgotten to polish it after the morning match?) - Frederick and Rosaline from Gryffindor, and Milica and Rafal from Slytherin. Frederick quickly proved himself right for having left his hoops to get in on the action, because he seized the Quaffle with perfect technique and zoomed over to the Slytherin hoops, where Charlotte was going as fast as possible around and around in an attempt to block. Still, in this Keeper vs. Keeper match-up, Gryffindor came out on top.

The announcer shouted out, "That's ten points to Gryffindor from Buckley!" As if energised by the knowledge that their opponents had scored the first goal, Slytherin's dual-dhampir Chaser pair dove into action with some guarding, passing, and flying action that would have put any other option to shame. "Oh, and Slytherin responds! That's two goals sunk by Deveraux, though he can thank Vranekova for the assist on that first one!"

Milica continued to snatch the Quaffle away from a hapless Rosaline and pass to her partner-in-crime, Rafal, but this time when the second-year got to the Gryffindor hoops, he would find them suddenly blocked again by Frederick. "Buckley's gotten back to the hoops just in time, and he blocks Deveraux's shot! - Oh, and he does it again to keep the score at twenty Slytherin, ten Gryffindor! Some stellar playing from Buckley today, I'll tell you lot."

The Snitch

The Snitch was being an evasive little bugger today. Unlike previous matches between these two teams, in which the golden flea had usually been spotted quite quickly, it was nowhere to be found by either Aodhan or Violeta, nor even members of the audience. Even the keen-eyed announcer was left scratching their head.

"It doesn't look like Shaw or Roux have seen what they're looking for yet. Now that you mention it, I don't really see it either. Can someone please double-check that the Golden Snitch was let out of its box?"

When someone threw them a thumbs-up to signify that it had, in fact, been released, the announcer gave an entertaining sort of dramatic shrug. "Maybe they can team up to find it faster. Or they can have a good chat up in the sky, at least. I'm sure we'd all love to see an enemies' sort of Seeker romance!"

The Bludgers

"Have you ever heard of an ouroboros?" the announcer asked the crowd whilst the Beaters began to engage themselves in a circular sort of smackdown. "Well, if you haven't, look no further than this match's Beaters!"

The pun was a double-edged sword, since it meant both a cyclical pattern and also a snake eating its own tail. Pax was after Aamon, who was defending Percival, who was after Pax - oh, and Ethan was in there too with a swift Bludger intercept. Though Pax's original Bludger missed, before the audience could so much as blink, a skillfully intercepted iron ball by Ethan (originally from Percival) had collided with the younger Slytherin Beater's midsection, sending him toppling from his broom.

"Oof! That had to hurt," the announcer said with a grimace. "Young little Athanatos has had the wind knocked out of him, and down he goes..." Luckily for Aamon, who had spent much of last season snacking on the bench, one of his teammates - Jada - swooped in for the rescue. "Seems that Blake has come to save him, though, and Athanatos barely hangs on. We have a first-year two-headed dragon, ladies and gents!"

KOB Fouls

Harlan Montgomery was, as usual, being a disgusting little bloke. This time, it wasn't because he was pining after stalking an uninterested girl three years his senior, but rather, because he was this match's first visitor to Blatchville, Tennessee. The fourth-year set his sights on his opposing Seeker, but Violeta managed to notice and slip out of his path at the last possible second.

Unfortunately, Harlan being on the pitch meant he was being watched like a hawk, and the announcer pointed out his attempt at cheating with a ridiculous amount of joy in their voice. "Montgomery, I know this might be hard to get through your skull, but cheating is illegal! Go take a lap 'round the stadium and think about what you've done." On and off the pitch.

Percival drove forward pulling his arm back to hit the budger with a sharp crack. The menacing ball zipped away from him towards his goal only to be subverted by the other team. Percival gritted his teeth together in a snarl, glowering at the other team's beater. It was never easy to have your fun interrupted. The boy would pay little mind to his downed teammate, as he flew off, clenching the wood of his bat just a little tighter.

1. In the role of Beater, if you hit an opponent with a bludger the bludger will then ricochet off that user and target a second opponent of choice (must be declared, if not declared the target will be random and can be an ally but not yourself).

2. In the role of Beater, if an ALLY dodges a bludger during the round, there is a 20% chance that you catch that bludger with your bat and you send it at a RANDOM enemy target.

3. In the role of Beater, if you critically hit with a bludger, instead of doing double-damage you do 2.5x damage. If you critically fail with your bludger attempt to hit, rather than having your bludger randomly target another user (including yourself or an ally) the bludger cannot target you on a critical fail (but it can still target your allies). On a re-target, there is a random roll for target and then a fresh accuracy roll.

Aamon Athanatos was not on the bench for this game. That was this team's first and hopefully final blunder for the season. Still, this misstep would be a doozy. This was the kind of error that required reflection, possibly (most certainly) medical attention, and of course better life choices.

What, exactly, had happened to the teen's original plan? You know, the one involving sitting on the bench, maintaining a dignified presence, and consuming crisps with the quiet authority of someone who understood his limitations? That was the greatest tragedy of the modern age.

This was truly Siege Perilous: the Arthurian legend that described an unfilled seat at the round table. The seat that kills the unworthy that would try to sit, and the young Athanatos was the furthest from worthy. And he knew better than to believe that he was in the seat of destiny. It was too late now, Aamon was airborne, armed, and expected to somehow contribute. Aamon squinted across the pitch, not because he needed glasses but because narrow eyes let him think better. The beater was weighing his options with the seriousness of someone who knew every option was equally terrible.

Option one: personally bludgeon an opponent with his own, admittedly theoretical, strength.

Option two: redirect a bludger and let physics do the work for him.

Both options were bad. A direct blow with a bat would be like giving an upper classman a beatdown with a feather duster and redirecting a violently enchanted iron sphere traveling at catastrophic speed required wrist integrity and Aamon was quite attached to his. "Right," the Seer muttered under his breath, gripping the bat like it might offer the emotional support @Nabi Park never could.

Aamon made an executive decision: he would not be the weapon, he would be the supporting infrastructure. Which is how the Slytherin found himself drifting closer to @Percival Rainwood, an older, more experienced player who was also significantly more qualified to be here.

Why? Excellent question. That narrator had as much of an idea as Aamon did. If the significantly stronger and more skilled Percival Rainwood needed a meat shield, Aamon would be that shield. A refined, well-dressed, deeply regretting-his-life-choices meat shield... but a meat shield all the same.

A beater opponent sent a bludger screaming toward Aamon. An interesting choice since Percival was a much more valuable target, but in Pax's defense, Aamon was easier to take down. "Well, crap..." the teen muttered to himself, profound last words.

Then, time slowed and for a fleeting moment, just a flicker, Aamon saw it. His prophetic powers had been summoned in his time of need. The threads of fate warned him of not just the bludger, but the outcome: the angle, the impact, the deeply undignified obituary.

Aamon moved. It was just enough. The bludger tore past him with a violent rush of air, missing him by inches that felt personal. Aamon blinked. Then, recovering with all the grace he could forcibly manufacture, he turned his head toward Pax and stuck his tongue out.

Action: Aamon does whatever the captain says he does.

The warmth of May was a welcome change from the freezing rain that drenched her last season. Would fortune would shine upon them today? Cecilia certainly hoped so. After most of the Cloud Cobras fell victim to the wretched iron ball during their last game, spirits were understandbly low. But with a few changes, including her removal the pitch, Cecilia quietly hoped that their fate would spin differently this time. Her only qualm was that interference was strictly forbidden, reducing her to the role of a mere spectator. Despite her disappointment, not even this vulpine trickster was foolish enough to test the Aly Salinger and cost her team the win they deserved. Of course, that did not mean she barred the team from engaging in underhanded tactics.

With her a strawberry over cream popsicle in hand, Cecilia plopped down in her seat with a huff. All she could do was earnestly support them until the end. When Milica passed the quaffle to Rafal and scored, she pumped her fist in the air and cheered. Though it took a great deal of strength to not grimace each time he hurt himself with the Quaffle, she brushed off her concern with the notion that they could work it that later. Then her breath hitched as the first bludger barelled towards Aamon, only for it to miss him by a hair. Leaping onto her feet, Cecilia applauded whilst remaining mindful of her melting popsicle. Unfortunately, her celebration was cut short when an intercepted bludger suddenly chased him down. Her jaw clenched as she shared Percival's frustration. Such a beautiful strike turned against them in an instant. Merlin forbid a beater has his fun during his final game. Fortunately, Jada swooped in to save Aamon, allowing Cecilia let out a sigh of relief and sink back into her seat. Sorry Athanatos, she thought apologetically before anxiously biting her finger. If you survive this, I'll owe you a lifetime of chocolate frogs or whatever you desire.

Just when the chaos seemed to die down, Harlan flew towards Violeta, who escaped his botched blatch attempt. After applauding her skillful timing, Cecilia scowled at him and quietly hoped that his path would interect with a bludger. Glancing over at the Gryffindor keeper, a playful yet harmless thought crossed her mind; Infinite pudding would be an easier wish to grant.

As soon as the starting whistle blew, Frederick’s adrenaline shot through the roof. Heart racing in front of the hoops, he tried to follow the opposing team’s opening moves with sharp attention, preparing himself for whatever might come flying his way. It took nerves of steel to stay planted in the Keeper’s position, something Fred still hadn’t fully mastered. The moment his gaze crossed with Rosaline’s a few meters ahead, he made the split-second decision to abandon the hoops.

It was obvious how well the boy and girl worked together ever since they had first met on the Hogwarts Express. Over time, Buckley and Everhart had become close friends, making Quidditch practices feel more fun than exhausting and improving their chemistry on the pitch. One look and a quick nod were enough for Fred to know exactly what to do. Flying beside Rosaline, he charged toward the Quaffle, contesting it against two opposing players, Milica and Rafal.

As in every Quidditch match, events unfolded at dizzying speed. Frederick managed to steal the Quaffle and score a goal, but while trying to score more, or help Rosaline do the same, his opponents scored through the hoops he had left unguarded. In another decision made within seconds, Buckley sharply redirected his broom back toward Gryffindor’s side of the pitch and, shouting a quick “You got this!” toward Rosa, returned to his Keeper position just in time to pull off two beautiful blocks in a row.

Breathing hard, he focused once more on the movements of the other players, the whole field spread out before him, just in time to see one of Slytherin’s Chasers manage to rescue one of their Beaters. There was no time to dwell on it, even when Harlan was sent on a penalty lap, Frederick held onto his confidence and optimism. The match was only just beginning.

While the first strings zoomed here and there on their brooms, looking for the snitch, trying to score with the quaffle or attempting to bludger someone, Laasya tried to strategize with Avery Gray. Unfortunately, she couldn’t think of anything useful by the time they were done. The air was filled with cheers from the Slytherins and boos from the Gryffindors. She watched as a beater got knocked of his broom and got saved by one of the chasers and Harlan’s attempt to blatch the seeker fail and he had to do a penalty lap. The Gryffindors had 10 points while the Slytherins had 20. It was only 10 points, they could catch up soon.

It did seem that, despite their differences, Slytherin and Gryffindor were aligned on one thing: the beaters on the opposing team were a problem, and needed to be gone. With Ethan handling Percival, Pax was in charge of tackling Aamon, and they thought they had him, but in the last second, he dodged, leading Pax to momentarily scowl. Thankfully, Ethan caught it and managed to get him out regardless. Next time, they thought to themselves, next time.
